campus this week mourned the passing of bishop ethelbert talbot friend of 30 years and university trustee the flag flying at half-mast tuesday morning was the first premonition to the student bcftly states lawn tennis association when fritz mercur ex-'27 was awarded 15th position and julius selig son 30 was placed at 19th in the country mercur former brown and white star advanced three steps higher than his rating for the 1926 season and is now seeking new laurels in indoor competi tion seligson who will be elig ible for intercollegiate competi tion for the first time this year dropped from 15th place in the 1926 ratings to his present po sition principally because he had not completed in all the im portant tournaments of the past season the new ratings were distinc tive because of the invasion of so much young blood into the elite of veteran courtmen five among the first 20 george m lott jr john van ryn john doeg julius seligson and clif ford marsh are still in college and arnold w jones lewis n white cranston w holman and fritz mercur were all in collegiate competition not more than three years ago musical clubs play at liberty high honorary chapel service he who would students to attend the services the morning of june 5 and the afternoon of june 6 were set as tentative dates awaiting approval of the faculty for comprehensive examinations for sophomores by the engineering council wednesday comprehensive exams will be given in mathematics and draw ing june 5 and chemistry and physics june 6 these will probably be the only comprehen sives since the term ends a week before the time of these exams the council feels that there will be ample time for a cursory review of the various subjects results of the comprehensives will be sent to students soon af ter the exam period the coun cil decided that there will be no re-exams i n comprehensives and that every sophomore will be required therefore to take the exams at the dates set sophomores will be permitted to continue in the engineering curricula only if a consideration of the college record grades the aptitude records turned in by each teacher and results of the comprehensives is favorable failure in the comprehensives whi in all probability forbid continuation in engineering if however college record grades and aptitude records are high a certificate showing that the first two years of row court in biesecker gymnas ium militated against an effec tive offense and only uncanny shooting and close following the ball were responsible for the size of the lehigh total fine defensive work by the brown and white representatives lim ited f and m to six field goals during the 40 minutes of play but the close guarding on the small floor together with strict officiating made the game seem yesterday afternoon inter ment took place in nisky hill cemetery where bishop talbot was laid at rest aside the tomb of his wife who died eight years ago amid the many beautiful floral tributes blended the grandeur of the picturesque cathedral which was inadequate for the capacity crowd thou sands of persons in all walks of life moved reverently past the bier of the late bishop as he reposed in his clerical robes in state in the sanctuary of the church wednesday and thurs day during this time members of psi upsilon fraternity of which the late bishop was a member and the students of leonard hall formed the guard of honor throughout the long vigils with the auditorium filled and hundreds of friends forming hu man walls the procession was carried out as arranged the full vested choir met the offi ciating clergy at the main door of the church and proceeded up the main aisle led by the cruci fer while t edgar shields was playing a funeral march on the grand pipe organ then follow ed the pallbearers comprising friends the vest~y of the church and wardens of trintiy church bethlehem north side ; lay members of the standing committee lay officials of the diocese of said the death of bishop ethelbert tal bot removes from the board of trustees one of the university's most devoted friends and ser vants coming to bethlehem in 1897 he was elected a corpor ate member of the board of trustees the following year so that he served in this capacity for exactly thirty years in all his relations with the university bishop talbot was attentive to the duties of his trusteeship and he was tre mendously interested in all of the institution's worthwhile ac tivities probably no o t h er member of the board was so punctilious about attendance at meetings of the board of trus tees as he this devotion to duty however was character istic of the bishop's whole life his service to mankind his charming personality and his genial interest in everything that came under his notice en deared him to those who had the privilege of his friendship the bishop was always in terested in education as a young man he founded the st james military academy at ma con mo and after coming to bethlehem he organized leon ard hall thereafter he did everything in his power to en courage the graduates of that institution to continue their training at lehigh because of his belief in the value of education bishop tal bot was always interested in the affairs of college students he was one of the most useful members of the board of direc tors of the old y m c a now the lehigh union and he took a friendly interest in the af fairs of the local chapter of his fraternity psi upsilon and in the students who were affiiliat ed with his church the pass ing of bishop talbot is there fore a real loss to lehigh and to lehigh students with the engagement of an imported orchestra the merry makers the freshman cabinet has completed plans for a tea dance to be held march 10 in drown hall girls from fern sem and bishopthorpe will be guests of the class the pro ceeds of the dance will be oised to help pay expenses of the class banquet in may the brown-eyed susan as the official flower and black and gold as the official colors have been selected by the cabinet the new public speaking forum will continue its discus sion on companionate marriage next monday night the dis cussion of the subject made popular by judge ben lindsey was commenced at the first forum last monday night in the office of professor myron j luch the forum is primarily for students in public speaking courses chapters at the de cember 1927 convention in nashville term of the amer ican association for the ad vancement of science the society of the sigma xi was organized at cornell uni versity in 1885 to encourage or iginal investigation in pure and applied science the standards of eligibility for membership in the society are the most rigor ous of any of the numerous hon orary organizations full mem bership is open to only gradu ate students and members of faculty or alumni who have made significant contributions to the advancement of scienti fic knowledge through the pub lication of results of original re search undergraduate students are eligible only to associate membership on the basis of great promise for achievement in scientific research five years after graduation associ ate members become eligible to membership provided within that period they have published the results of original investi gations dr richards in his letter of petition to the council of the sigma xi society said lehigh university is definitely com mitted to the promotion of sci entific research through the or ganization of its institute of re search and it is ready there fore to offer encouragement to the development of every avail able agency that will stimulate the spirit of research and schol arly achievement among the members of its staff consistent with policy according to dr richards the granting of a chapter of the society to lehigh univer sity is a very direct recogni tion of the development at the university of the spirit of re search that followed the found ing of the institute of research ethelbert talbot d d li d retired bishop of the diocese of bethlehem and former presiding bishop of the epsicopal church in america who was buried from the pro cathedral church of the nativ ity yesterday afternoon inter ment took place in nisky hill cemetery where bishop talbot was laid at rest aside the tomb of his wife who died eight years ago amid the many beautiful floral tributes blended the grandeur of the picturesque cathedral which was inadequate for the capacity crowd thou sands of persons in all walks of life moved reverently past the bier of the late bishop as he reposed in his clerical robes in state in the sanctuary of the church wednesday and thurs day during this time members of psi upsilon fraternity of which the late bishop was a member and the students of leonard hall formed the guard of honor throughout the long vigils with the auditorium filled and hundreds of friends forming hu man walls the procession was carried out as arranged the full vested choir met the offi ciating clergy at the main door of the church and proceeded up the main aisle led by the cruci fer while t edgar shields was playing a funeral march on the grand pipe organ then follow ed the pallbearers comprising friends the vest~y of the church and wardens of trintiy church bethlehem north side ; lay members of the standing committee lay officials of the diocese of bethlehem deans of convocation the rev a t reasoner warden of leonard hall fountain hill clerical members of the standing com mittee students of leonard hall students and faculty of the philadelphia divinity school and clergy in canonical order expressive of the wish of bishop talbot were the cere monies which were plain in conception but majestic in feel ing the regular burial ser vice of the church was used af ter the opening sentences were read by presiding bishop mur ray the choir chanted the 46th and 121 st psalms dean d wilmot gateson of the pro cathedral church of the na tivity read the fifteenth chap ter of i corinthians from the 20th verse to the end of the chapter as the lesson the reading was followed by the singing of the hymn the saints of god their conflict pass bishop talbot's favorite hymn sun of my soul thou saviour dear was sung with the entire audience on bended knees bishop murray pro nounced the benediction while the triumphant recessional hymn the strife is o'er was being sung the officiating cler gy and honorary pallbearers re tired from the chancel at the grave in nisky hill cemetery the committal service was in charge of arch-deacon walter the prayers were read by the rev john talbot ward a nephew of the late bishop talbot and rector of st mary's church at burlington n j while the benediction was pro nounced by bishop murray the masonic service was in charge of the officers of the h stanley goodwin lodge no 648 f & a m dr richard's statement president charles r rich ards who was closely associat ed with bishop talbot on the board of trustees said the death of bishop ethelbert tal bot removes from the board of trustees one of the university's most devoted friends and ser vants coming to bethlehem in 1897 he was elected a corpor ate member of the board of trustees the following year so that he served in this capacity for exactly thirty years in all his relations with the university bishop talbot was attentive to the duties of his trusteeship and he was tre mendously interested in all of the institution's worthwhile ac tivities probably no o t h er member of the board was so punctilious about attendance at meetings of the board of trus tees as he this devotion to duty however was character istic of the bishop's whole life his service to mankind his charming personality and his genial interest in everything that came under his notice en deared him to those who had the privilege of his friendship the bishop was always in terested in education as a young man he founded the st james military academy at ma con mo and after coming to bethlehem he organized leon ard hall thereafter he did everything in his power to en courage the graduates of that institution to continue their training at lehigh because of his belief in the value of education bishop tal bot was always interested in the affairs of college students he was one of the most useful members of the board of direc tors of the old y m c a now the lehigh union and he took a friendly interest in the af fairs of the local chapter of his fraternity psi upsilon and in the students who were affiiliat ed with his church the pass ing of bishop talbot is there fore a real loss to lehigh and to lehigh students with the engagement of an imported orchestra the merry makers the freshman cabinet has completed plans for a tea dance to be held march 10 in drown hall girls from fern sem and bishopthorpe will be guests of the class the pro ceeds of the dance will be oised to help pay expenses of the class banquet in may the brown-eyed susan as the official flower and black and gold as the official colors have been selected by the cabinet the new public speaking forum will continue its discus sion on companionate marriage next monday night the dis cussion of the subject made popular by judge ben lindsey was commenced at the first forum last monday night in the office of professor myron j luch the forum is primarily for students in public speaking courses but is open to the pub lic last monday night there were 20 in attendance the meetings are conducted to discuss interesting social and economic problems ; they will be held throughout the rest of the year in dr luch's office be tween 7 and 8 o'clock every monday night , a new chapter of sigma xi national honorary research so ciety was formally installed with 42 charter members of the lehigh faculty thursday after noon by dean george b peg ram of columbia university national treasurer of the frater nity following the installa tion meeting charter members of the chapter with other mem bers who reside in the lehigh valley attended the formal in stallation dinner at the hotel bethlehem with dr charles russ richards acting as toast master addresses were made by dean pegram donald b pren tice dean of lafayette college professor b l miller profes sor bradley stoughton and pro fessor james s long ten of the » 42 charter mem bers of the lehigh chapter were initiated into the society thurs day of the others 26 were al ready members and six were as sociates of other chapters the petition for a lehigh chapter was granted by a unanimous vote of the representatives of the various chapters at the de cember 1927 convention in nashville term of the amer ican association for the ad vancement of science the society of the sigma xi was organized at cornell uni versity in 1885 to encourage or iginal investigation in pure and applied science the standards of eligibility for membership in the society are the most rigor ous of any of the numerous hon orary organizations full mem bership is open to only gradu ate students and members of faculty or alumni who have made significant contributions to the advancement of scienti fic knowledge through the pub lication of results of original re search undergraduate students are eligible only to associate membership on the basis of great promise for achievement in scientific research five years after graduation associ ate members become eligible to membership provided within that period they have published the results of original investi gations dr richards in his letter of petition to the council of the sigma xi society said lehigh university is definitely com mitted to the promotion of sci entific research through the or ganization of its institute of re search and it is ready there fore to offer encouragement to the development of every avail able agency that will stimulate the spirit of research and schol arly achievement among the members of its staff consistent with policy according to dr richards the granting of a chapter of the society to lehigh univer sity is a very direct recogni tion of the development at the university of the spirit of re search that followed the found ing of the institute of research in 1924 ' it should be noted that the publications of the in stitute are already beginning to attract widespread attention dr richards declared guests at the dinner all mem bers of sigma xi were dean
