collections advance copies of the second shakespearean pamphlet b y prof robert m smith head of the english department have been distributed by the lehigh institute of research publish ers to a few librarians book sellers and scholars who aided prof smith in his research the pamphlet entitled the variant issues of shakespeare's second folio and milton's first published english poem a biographical problem is a complete study of the second folio the author's aim is to correct many errors of other scholars he bases his conclusions on a study of over 100 copies of the folio including two at lehigh in the preface prof smith mentions the experimental chemical work by m s borow sky undergraduate on paper and watermarks dr smith shows that there are no less than five variants of the title page of the allot issues so called because they were printed for a robert al colloids subject of chem lecture dramatic society working on show talk dr kraemer dv pont ex pert delivers illustrated musical comedy to be replaced by legiti mate play a resolution originating in omicron delta kappa recom mending the establishment of a student activities fee of four dollars to be assessed these organizations the union membership in which is now two dollars would receive 75 cents from each four dollar fee the arcadia would continue to collect 50 cents from each student one dollar would go for class dues and the brown and white would receive 1.75 the stipend would be collect ed in two installments two dol lars at each registration the plan of a student activi ties fee is borrowed from many other colleges and universities in all parts of the country it is believed by its proponents to be the most feasible method of placing the organizations which would profit by it on a sound financial basis problems contest begins on friday columbia lions appeared lit tle stronger than the prover bial lambs when the undefeated lehigh wrestling combination annihilated the blue and white matmen 21-6 before a large alumni-day gathering in the new york gymnasium yester day afternoon lehigh students had no formality of a hok'hy monday but the brown und white grapplers celebrated with their second major victory gain ed within 48 hours of the third victim annapolis three falls palm heilman and lehr and two time deci sions mcgovern and miller culminated in more than enough of points to nullify the two time victories which the new yorkers gained by the closest of margins hitherto the pe terson wrestlers had been in the 4 out of 5 category of meet wins but yesterday they had to be content with but 2 out of 7 matches all the bouts were spiritedly contested although at times it appeared as if the columbia athletes were content to remain on their feet instead of seeking the mat twice mcgovern placed himself in inviting posi tions to draw his opponent into combat but failed lehigh dis played the identical aggressive ness which coach sheridan in stilled into all his teams the sons interested whether members of the club or not are eligible freshmen are also eligible yesterday morning the class of 1929 started a drive to col lect all the class dues which have not been paid since school opened in the fall over twen ty deputies were assigned to as sist the officers of the class in collecting the dues the depu ties have been so picked that they will reach all the courses and all the living groups of the third year men the assessment for the year is three dollars stowell conducts chapel exercises beginning february 17 ten prizes of five dollars each will be awarded undergraduates for solutions to problems set by the mathematics department one problem will be published in each friday issue of the brown and white and posted at the same time on bulletin board number one in packer hall solutions must be given to one of a committee consisting of profs fort reynolds smail or lamson before 10 a m the fol lowing wednesday names of the winner and others who give correct solu tions and if possible the win ning solution will be published in the brown and white in awarding prizes the character of the presentation or discus sions of the method used will receive consideration two prizes will be open to freshmen only and two more to fresh men and sophomores only not more than two prizes will be awarded to any one man and prizes will be divided only if the committee is entirely unable to determine the winner faculty hold dance political causes generating the present crisis in nicaragua were traced by samuel garwood at a meeting of the alexander hamilton club last evening in coppee hall a brief business meeting at which paul gilmore president presided preceded the talk and a general discussion of the topic recent develop ments in nicaragua followed garwood presented the his tory of american intervention in nicaraguan affairs by sketch ing briefly the events since 1909 at that time president taft came to the aid of the struggling government by as sisting president diaz the con servative leader diaz kept his position with difficulty until the 1924 elections when general chomorro engineered a coup d etat which gave the liberal par ty the upper hand the united sates looked with disapproval upon the liberals and refused to recognize it the congress of nicaragua promptly elected diaz again and in the face of liberal protest he was recog nized as the rightful president by the united states this action left two parties in power in the republic as little was done toward establish ing a national peace diaz of fered to compromise with his opponents on the grounds that he maintain his office until 1928 was refused the united states then sent henry l stimson former secretary of war to the scene stimson brought about a truce which provided that both sides lay down their arms the one agreement that stood was that there would be a fair elec tion in 1928 the present warfare in nic aragua in which the united states marines are sharing is the outgrowth of the conserva tive-liberal controversy of 1924 he stated general san dino refused to agree to mr stimson's terms and attempted to defy american intervention general lejune leader of the marines was sent to quiet san dino with the result that he was put to route and is at the pres ent time endeavoring to escape from the country by defeating the strong united states naval academy wrestling team 15 1-2 to 9 1-2 last saturday afternoon the le high matmen won the distinc tion of being the first team ever to win two consecutive vic tories from the annapolic ag gregation saturday's victory was the third successive win of the season for the lehigh team and although the score would indicate a closely contested bat tle still it was a decisive vic tory for lehigh who lost only two of the seven bouts approximately 2,000 enthu siastic spectators watched the greatly improved lehigh squad triumph over the middies in a meet where every bout was a hardly contested struggle and in which every man played an important part the feature bout of the afternoon was a very hard tussle between den ise of lehigh and voorhees of the navy which ended in a draw after two extra periods of nei ther man gaining enough time to merit a decision mcgovern scored the first three points for the brown and white by decisively defeating captain ashford of the navy team on a time decision of 6 minutes 59 seconds ashford had not been defeated before this season al lewis fell into a bad hold during the first few minutes of his bout with wilbourne and for three minutes was unable to free himself and was thrown with a bar and chancery the bout between denise of lehigh voorhees of the navy in the 135 pound class ended in a draw after two extra periods in the next bout captain bill heilman encountered a very strong man in banister but proved his superiority by throw ing his man in 9 minutes 17 sec onds landis lost a very close de cision to morton of the navy in the 158 pound class after a very hard fought battle neith er man had enough time ad vantage for a decision until morton managed to get a body scissors and held landis just long enough to get a small time advantage there was no doubt about the outcome of andy lehr's bout with meeker of the navy for lehr took his man to the mat almost immediately and never permitted him to get up lehr won on a time advantage of ap proximately 8 minutes tubby miller put up a won defful exhibition against wil son navy football tackle and star wrestler and gained a goodly time advantage mc govern heilman lehr and mil ler are undefeated this season the summaries 115 - lb — mcgovern lehigh continued on page five musical organization starts on extensive tour thursday the science of colloids which has grown tremendously since the invention of the ultramicro scope in 1903 now occupies a most important place in science and industry according to dr elmer o kraemer of the e i dupont de nemours & co inc of wilmington del who gave an illustrated lecture before the chemical society in the chand ler chemical building last thursday evening the lecture room was filled with a record crowd the several hundred in attendance including students and faculty members from la fayette muhlenberg and mora vian dr kraemer popularized a highly technical subject he stated that although colloid chemistry the chemistry of grains drops bubbles fila ments and films was studied in 1861 no appreciable progress was made in it until the inven tion of the ultramicroscope made possible the study of these minute particles the speaker asserted the significant fact that the manufacture of gun powder and explosives is the only operation sponsored by the dupont corporation in which the colloid science plays no part the magnitude of this science becomes very manifest when one considers that the dupont prod ucts number several thousand the audience especially en joyed the motion picture film showing the movement of collo idal particles due to the brown ian movement made by dr kraemer with the aid of an ul tramicroscope while he was studying for the degree of doc tor of philosophy at the uni versity of wisconsin where he later was a member of the fac ulty the faculty held its first dance of the semester - saturday evening in drown hall 25 cou ples attending dave fluhar ty's orchestra played among the novelties was a valentine dance each dancer finding his partner by matching halves of comic valentines the week of march 19 which was selected as the date for the annual musical comedy is now temporarily out of the question this same week will most likely bring forth the renewal of the one-time popular function of mustard and cheese the ex ecutive committee has now de termined the best possible date for the production of the play and also decided upon the sys tem of coaching and production to be employed in the new func tion of the club comments on the four one act plays given by mustard and cheese last december have been very favorable real dramatic talent is believed to be present for a three-act comedy of the finest type the play will more than likely be given the week-end of march 24 the business and managerial departments have long since begun operations and the executive committee looks to an unqualified success for this another turning point in the history of mustard and cheese the second annual mid-winter alumni homecoming day is again set for washington's birthday february 22 this year furthermore it is to be more than a gala day for alum ni as it is to be known as alum ni and dad's day previously dad's day was scheduled for a saturday in the spring but it has this year been changed to this date so that dads may have the opportunity to visit lehigh while classes are in session in this way both alumni and fathers may obtain a more ac curate impression of lehigh as it really is a widely varied program has been arranged in cluding inspection tours of classes a public speaking con test alumni meetings and ath letic contests the first scheduled event of interest to lehigh's guests will take place on the night preced ingn g washington's birthday when the annual meeting of the historical society of the col leges of the lehigh valley will be held william mather lew is the newly elected president of lafayette college is to pay his first formal visit to lehigh and will preside at this meet ing president lewis was in augurated last fall and pre viously held the same position at george washington univer sity where he established a very excellent reputation dr john c kirkpatrick of the library of congress will speak on the life of washington upon which subject he is a well known authority the first meeting of alumni and dad's day proper will be held in the chapel at 11 o'clock wednesday morning at this time the annual public speak ing contest for years a fixture on washington's birthday will take place there will be six undergraduate speakers three of whom will be engineers and the other three arts and bus iness students the alumni as sociation is offering attractive monetary awards for winners in each division the men have been trained for the event by professor luch professor of public speaking . in the afternoon there will be a general meeting of alumni in the assembly room at drown hall the discussion will large ly center around future plans for the enlargement of univer sity equipment talks concern ing the progress of the work on the packard memorial lab oratory will be given by dr c r richards and members of the mechanical and electrical en gineering departments slides have been prepared to illustrate the plans later in the after noon the alumni council will meet in the same place the meeting being open to all inter ested the final event of the day will be athletic in nature with lehigh opposing rutgers on the basketball court and in the pool rutgers has for years been a traditional foe of the brown and white and these contests should have particular appeal for alumni make junior prom plans to teach chemistry alumni hall repaired morning chapel services this week are being conducted by the rev horace wood stowell missioner who is visiting the pro-cathedral church of the nativity where he is preach g each evening monday morning the rev mr stowell spoke on search and this morning on the subject discovery tomorrow morn ing his topic will be enrich ment thursday he will speak on service and friday on attainment mr stowell is a native of pennsylvania was graduated from st stephen's college and theological seminary and was ordained by bishop talbot the oldest living bishop of the am erican episcopal church and a member of the lehigh board of trustees the rev dr stowell has oc cupied pulpits in this state maryland and the district of columbia he is also the auth or of a series of studies from the prayer book and the bible prof k.w lamson will speak on the schroedinger wave mechanics at the mathematical research and journal club meeting at 11 a m thursday college lecture dr charles roy hauser has accepted a position as assistant instructor in the chemistry de partment dr hauser who graduated from the university of florida in 1924 has spent the past three years at the univer sity of lowa where he received his degree as doctor of phil osophy in june 1927 he will have charge of freshmen sec tions in elementary chemistry the renovation of the rotun da and hallways of the alumni memorial building has been completed for over two months a corps of workmen patched cracks resulting from the set tling of the building since its construction four years ago the repointing and painting which was directed by the w p nelson co now awaits the approval of the architects vischer and burley of new york city on february 3 the glee club quartette appeared at a smok er in new york given by the lehigh club of new york and made a decided hit it is the aim of the combined clubs to achieve a similar success the symphony orchestra con sists of 40 men and is under the direction of leonard j lucken bach former conductor of the bethlehem symphony orches tra the glee club is made up of 30 men and is under the di rection of t edgar shields or ganist of the famous bach choir both these directors are very capable men and both they and the members of the clubs have been working hard to make this trip a success seventy members of the le high univ combined musical clubs consisting of the glee club and the symphony orches tra will start on a four day con cert tour through new york and new jersey thursday feb 16 the first evening they will give a concert at the hotel astor in new york city un der the auspices of the new york lehigh club on friday afternoon they will broadcast over the radio from the new york studio of station wor from one until two o'clock fri day evening they will give a concert at the upper montclair women's club under the aus pices of the lehigh club of north jersey acknowledgement the cut of robert b adams new baseball coach carried in the last issue of the brown and white was loaned by the bethlehem globe times we regret omission of novelties was a valentine dance each dancer finding his partner by matching halves of comic valentines the week of march 19 which was selected as the date for the annual musical comedy is now temporarily out of the question this same week will most likely bring forth the renewal of the one-time popular function of mustard and cheese the ex ecutive committee has now de termined the best possible date for the production of the play and also decided upon the sys tem of coaching and production to be employed in the new func tion of the club comments on the four one act plays given by mustard and cheese last december have been very favorable real dramatic talent is believed to be present for a three-act comedy of the finest type the play will more than likely be given the week-end of march 24 the business and managerial departments have long since begun operations and the executive committee looks to an unqualified success for this another turning point in the history of mustard and cheese the second annual mid-winter alumni homecoming day is again set for washington's birthday february 22 this year furthermore it is to be more than a gala day for alum ni as it is to be known as alum ni and dad's day previously dad's day was scheduled for a saturday in the spring but it has this year been changed to this date so that dads may have the opportunity to visit lehigh while classes are in session in this way both alumni and fathers may obtain a more ac curate impression of lehigh as it really is a widely varied program has been arranged in cluding inspection tours of classes a public speaking con test alumni meetings and ath letic contests the first scheduled event of interest to lehigh's guests will take place on the night preced ingn g washington's birthday when the annual meeting of the historical society of the col leges of the lehigh valley will be held william mather lew is the newly elected president of lafayette college is to pay his first formal visit to lehigh and will preside at this meet ing president lewis was in augurated last fall and pre viously held the same position at george washington univer sity where he established a very excellent reputation dr john c kirkpatrick of the library of congress will speak on the life of washington upon which subject he is a well known authority the first meeting of alumni and dad's day proper will be held in the chapel at 11 o'clock wednesday morning at this time the annual public speak ing contest for years a fixture on washington's birthday will take place there will be six undergraduate speakers three of whom will be engineers and the other three arts and bus iness students the alumni as sociation is offering attractive monetary awards for winners in each division the men have been trained for the event by professor luch professor of public speaking . in the afternoon there will be a general meeting of alumni in the assembly room at drown hall the discussion will large ly center around future plans for the enlargement of univer sity equipment talks concern ing the progress of the work on the packard memorial lab oratory will be given by dr c r richards and members of the mechanical and electrical en gineering departments slides have been prepared to illustrate the plans later in the after noon the alumni council will meet in the same place the meeting being open to all inter ested the final event of the day will be athletic in nature with lehigh opposing rutgers on the basketball court and in the pool rutgers has for years been a traditional foe of the brown and white and these contests should have particular appeal for alumni make junior prom plans to teach chemistry alumni hall repaired morning chapel services this week are being conducted by the rev horace wood stowell missioner who is visiting the pro-cathedral church of the nativity where he is preach g each evening monday morning the rev mr stowell spoke on search and this morning on the subject discovery tomorrow morn ing his topic will be enrich ment thursday he will speak on service and friday on attainment mr stowell is a native of pennsylvania was graduated from st stephen's college and theological seminary and was ordained by bishop talbot the oldest living bishop of the am erican episcopal church and a member of the lehigh board of trustees the rev dr stowell has oc cupied pulpits in this state maryland and the district of columbia he is also the auth or of a series of studies from the prayer book and the bible prof k.w lamson will speak on the schroedinger wave mechanics at the mathematical research and journal club meeting at 11 a m thursday college lecture dr charles roy hauser has accepted a position as assistant instructor in the chemistry de partment dr hauser who graduated from the university of florida in 1924 has spent the past three years at the univer sity of lowa where he received his degree as doctor of phil osophy in june 1927 he will have charge of freshmen sec tions in elementary chemistry the renovation of the rotun da and hallways of the alumni memorial building has been completed for over two months a corps of workmen patched cracks resulting from the set tling of the building since its construction four years ago the repointing and painting which was directed by the w p nelson co now awaits the approval of the architects vischer and burley of new york city on february 3 the glee club quartette appeared at a smok er in new york given by the lehigh club of new york and made a decided hit it is the aim of the combined clubs to achieve a similar success the symphony orchestra con sists of 40 men and is under the direction of leonard j lucken bach former conductor of the bethlehem symphony orches tra the glee club is made up of 30 men and is under the di rection of t edgar shields or ganist of the famous bach choir both these directors are very capable men and both they and the members of the clubs have been working hard to make this trip a success seventy members of the le high univ combined musical clubs consisting of the glee club and the symphony orches tra will start on a four day con cert tour through new york and new jersey thursday feb 16 the first evening they will give a concert at the hotel astor in new york city un der the auspices of the new york lehigh club on friday afternoon they will broadcast over the radio from the new york studio of station wor from one until two o'clock fri day evening they will give a concert at the upper montclair women's club under the aus pices of the lehigh club of north jersey acknowledgement the cut of robert b adams new baseball coach carried in the last issue of the brown and white was loaned by the bethlehem globe times we regret omission of m today in drown hall first steps toward sponsoring a successful junior prom were taken this week with the ap pointment of a committee by president leonard c crewe jr of the class of 1929 and formulation of plans at the first meeting of the committee held friday night at the phi delta theta house in accordance with the usual practice the prom will be staged on the fri day night of spring house par ty which will be april 27 this year the committee is comprised of thomas m brennan chair main leland d trantum john i kirkpatrick and crewe ex officio the monthly meeting of the lehigh
