machine to college fourteen flunks bulletin in a statement to the brown and white this morning walter r oke son asserted i think that it will he necessary for me to resign as secre tarii of the alumni association but as i made it clear when i assumed these new duties no other position however more lucrative could induce me to resign as treasurer of the uni versity i will retain this office since its duties bring me into constant con tact with the university and its alumni walter r okeson 95 uni versity treasurer and secretary of the lehigh alumni associa tion supersedes the ccn+ral board and assumes the m uacal the usual activity and bustle of registration was prevalent in packer hall last friday and saturday as 1275 lehigh men registered their various classes for the spring semester rough estimates from the bursar's office indicate that the receipts for the two days to talled at least 255,000 and late registrations will undoubtedly increase that total considerably as this issue goes to press there have been approximately 100 additional students enrolled and the number is expected to in crease for several more days there appear to be a surpris ing number of familiar faces missing from the campus most of whom have probably sought other pursuits as a result of the dean's request to counterbal ance this loss there are numer ous men returning for another try at the professors as a result of flunk-outs and transfers there are several va cant rooms available in price and taylor halls these rooms may be obtained by applying to the bursar's office immediately the dean's office is still ex ceedingly busy with registra tion and as yet have not com piled data concerning the total registration ; this information will not be available yet for several weeks football coaches all lehigh grads goldman and hess are tate's choice for assistants at the january meeting and luncheon of the collegium ro manum honarary latin society held january 25 in the hotel bethlehem sir john garstang one of the most eminent arch aeologists in the world deliv ered an address on the hit tites an empire that existed 3500 years ago and endured for 1500 years in his speech prof garstang briefly outlined the activities of the hittites and traced the ex tent of their empire he de scribed his excavations and the finding of sets of tablets in scribed with hieroglyphics which yielded copious informa tion regarding these people he said that he found these state ments to coincide with those of the bible that the homeric le gends have also been proved to contain positive facts and that the tragedy of homer is real his discoverit show not even the least error in topography or strategic setting of the various battles and movements in trac ing the book of joshua he found boyle lathe with 25 in swing and 10 ft bed the lathe will be used for mounting the general electric co automatic welding machine the thomson company has giv en the welding laboratory one of their new model spot welding machines prof gilbert e doan who is in charge of the welding lab oratory in speaking of the im portance of the gifts said will make possible the use of the automatic welder in re search work on the physics and metallurgy of the arc as well as for show purposes at the an nual symposium next spring when the university entertains engineers from the entire le high valley these two gifts constitute the fourth and fifth gifts of mach inery to the newly organized welding laboratories which is being developed by the depart ment of metallurgical engin eering sophomore cabinet will collect dues in an effort to foster a high er scholastic average among football candidates thereby in suring them against failure or probation next june coach austy tate will continue the system which fund has held two meetings at which plans were made to con tinue collecting for the fund started by the donations of the sophomore chemical students a class secretary will be elect ed at the next meeting from the members of the cabinet to succeed george former secre tary march 24 was suggested as a date for another tea-dance no date was set for the smoker although the committee is working on some new feature of entertainment for the next smoker president oiler and secretary lentz both urged that the mem bers of the cabinet collect more dues a committee consisting of norton wilde dcx bullard and ed blackmar was appoint ed to supervise a house-to-house campaign by all cabinet mem bers for the collection of soph omore class dues instructor of the course in the brown and white however a number of new men have been added as reporters and these men will soon qualify for the executive positions as well as for certain new positions soon to be created competitions for promotion will no longer be conducted but rather awards will be made to men who do the best work in the course as soon as the organization is perfected many new features will be introduced some have already been inaugurated and others are soon to follow ef fort is to be largely concentrat ed on the aim of securing more news of real value to the stu dent body this is to be accom plished by assigning each re porter to a certain beat to obtain all of the news that it is possible to find therein these beats include all of the depart ments and organizations on the campus and this idea will make it responsible for all coincident with the opening of the second semester a re vamped and reorganized brown and white makes its ap pearance this issue marks the advent of an innovation in the management of the paper which promises much in the way of providing the univer sity with a much better news paper than has been hitherto possible this change has come about by securing the co-oper ation of the faculty or more precisely the co-operation of the english department in of fering a special course in jour nalism for the benefit of those men who write for and manage the paper this course is in cluded in the regular univer sity curriculum as a one-hour course and is open to all men interested in taking up this type of work insofar as the executive offi cers of the brown and white are held february 20 to 23 in new york city plans and tentative dates for a tea-dance and a sophomore smoker were discussed a mo tion to elect a new secretary was passed and an earnest ap peal for the collection of class dues was made at a meeting of the sophomore cabinet last night george oiler president re ported at the same meeting that the committee representing the student chemical research fund has held two meetings at which plans were made to con tinue collecting for the fund started by the donations of the sophomore chemical students a class secretary will be elect ed at the next meeting from the members of the cabinet to succeed george former secre tary march 24 was suggested as a date for another tea-dance no date was set for the smoker although the committee is working on some new feature of entertainment for the next smoker president oiler and secretary lentz both urged that the mem bers of the cabinet collect more dues a committee consisting of norton wilde dcx bullard and ed blackmar was appoint ed to supervise a house-to-house campaign by all cabinet mem bers for the collection of soph omore class dues instructor of the course in the brown and white however a number of new men have been added as reporters and these men will soon qualify for the executive positions as well as for certain new positions soon to be created competitions for promotion will no longer be conducted but rather awards will be made to men who do the best work in the course as soon as the organization is perfected many new features will be introduced some have already been inaugurated and others are soon to follow ef fort is to be largely concentrat ed on the aim of securing more news of real value to the stu dent body this is to be accom plished by assigning each re porter to a certain beat to obtain all of the news that it is possible to find therein these beats include all of the depart ments and organizations on the campus and this idea will make it possible to secure informa tion concerning any event of in terest continued on page four a change has also been made in regard to the editorial pro gram previously the editor has been solely responsible for all coincident with the opening of the second semester a re vamped and reorganized brown and white makes its ap pearance this issue marks the advent of an innovation in the management of the paper which promises much in the way of providing the univer sity with a much better news paper than has been hitherto possible this change has come about by securing the co-oper ation of the faculty or more precisely the co-operation of the english department in of fering a special course in jour nalism for the benefit of those men who write for and manage the paper this course is in cluded in the regular univer sity curriculum as a one-hour course and is open to all men interested in taking up this type of work insofar as the executive offi cers of the brown and white are
