engineering firm mr northrup has visited le high on three other occasions in addition to being a good speaker with a fine personality he also has a wonderful deliv ery as a part of the lecture which mr northrup gave he showed a map of that section of mary land in which conowingo is lo cated and at the same time he brought out the vast amount of red tape that the philadelphia power co which has a control ing interest in the dam had to go through legally as this company was not allowed to build a dam in maryland they formed the susquehanna pow er co which is owned by them the moving picture which has just been released by stone and webster and which shows the construction of the dam was used by mr northrup to illus trate his lecture continued on page four in many respects the cono wingo dam is the largest water power development in the world its two reaction wheels are phy sically the largest ever made and the potential h p devel oped is second only to that of niagara falls the power gen erated is distributed over a large part of pennsylvania and is conducted as far north as the coal fields in the northern part of the state and new york state in order to give some idea of the size of the project mr northrup said that a steel railroad bridge of three tracks the faculty having endorsed the reorganization plans for the editorial staff of the brown and white last week the board of publications in conjunction with staff members is working on plans for a reorganization of the business staff though the first steps in the reorganization of the editorial board will go into effect this coming semester nothing will be done to the business end of the publication until next fall what will be done then is large ly dependent upon the result of the petition to the arcadia for the general student fee which would automatically assure a circulation of 1500 an d add to the value of the advertising space noticeable changes in the brown and white this year will be few except of course in the quality and scope of the news that is covered nothing in the way of increasing the size of the paper and the running of features can be accomplished unless financial conditions are university will be taken by thewstaff members the course will systematize assignments and will offer training in cor rect newspaper style continued on page four one of the main problems of the course this coming semester will be to draw up a style book this book will set forth the standards to which the brown and white will conform and cyanide club has made many plans frosh basketeers to meet maroon blank form to be sent to all visiting teams lehigh freshmen have never lost to lafayette william brown billmeyer probably the most prominent man on the lehigh university campus was born seemingly for the purpose of receiving honors before coming to le high he spent the greater part of his life at the york colle giate institute where he ac quired distinction in basketball and track besides receiving nu merous other honors continued on page four bill came to lehigh in the fall of 1924 and enrolled as an arts man in his freshman year bill was captain of the freshman basketball team and a member of the track team he received freshman scholas tic honors proving that his ability was not solely in ath letics inspired by his first year's success bill climbed high er toward fame in his sopho more year he was elected trea surer of the sophomore class treasurer of the sophomore cot illion and treasurer of the phi club he was also a member of the sophomore cabinet and the club de quince a french society by the time bill be came an upper classman he was fast becoming a popular person on the campus he was elected president of the junior class vice-president of the cy anide club and president of the union he was also a member of the spiked shoe society and robert blake society as a senior bill is probably the most prominent man on the campus the lehigh varsity matmen will engage in their second en counter of the season tomorrow afternoon in taylor gymnasium when they meet the represen tatives of princeton on the mat the brown and white is out to revenge the one point defeat suffered at the hands of prince ton last season and if their showing against syracuse last saturday is any criterion of their strength an easy victory should be looked forward to the absence of mcgovern the diminutive 115 pounder from the brown and white line-up this week should prove to be quite a handicap but le high has in phillips a wrestler of quite some polish who has been held down due only to mc governs superiority and ex perience mcgovern will be out of the sport until after mid years due to a slight arm in jury in the 125-pound class palm managed to win out over al lewis and should show up well against kent of the tigers the 135-pound representative for lehigh will be john denise captain bill heilman will wrestle in the 145-pound class and should find no difficulty in conquering hun sicker of princeton art lan dis will wrestle in the 158 pound class against graham of princeton this should prove to be a very interesting bout an dy lehr will encounter tonnet ti a newcomer on the princeton team tubby miller in the un limited class will encounter bar field the princeton football tackle princeton's team has only two veterans from last year in mccrae 115-pound class and graham who wrestled in the 145-pound class last season while lehigh's team is com posed of four veterans three of which will wrestle this satur day this should give the brown and white a slight edge the probable line-up lehigh princeton phillips 115-lb mccrae palm 125-lb kent denise 135-lb tompen continued on page four math society has interesting meet lehigh natators lose to maroon exciting meet not decid ed until final event making score 33-26 holt stars that lehigh tennis stars past and present occupy an en viable position among the ten nis luminaries of the country is evidenced by the ratings they have received in the lists of the national and middle states con testants for the last three years the triumvirate of stars mercur sullivan and seligson have been ' gathering laurels both for themselves and lehigh for some time past fritz mercur the oldest of the three in respect to tennis experience was middle atlantic states in tercollegiate champion in 1925 when this competition was or iginated ; since then his vic tories throughout the east have been manifold for the 1926 season he was rated as 18th among the national stars and his rating in the middle states region for the season just pass ed was that of sth in the singles and paired with wallace john son first in the doubles the official national ratings have not yet been published but william t tiyen in his selec tion of the 12 greatest players of the past year mentions mer cur as number ten so that it is reasonable to assume that he will undoubtedly be among the first 15 in the official list neil sullivan captain-elect of the 1928 lehigh team graduat ed unexpectedly on founder's day last october this was a severe blow to the very excel lent prospects of the team for the coming season because he had in the past two years held an enviable position among in tercollegiate stars in 1926 he was rated as third in the na tional intercollegiate lists yield ing place only to holman and chandler western stars and being first among the collegiate players here in the east for the 1927 season he was listed by coach dell of princeton as 6th high man in eastern col legiate circles and was officially rated as 11th in the middle states since his graduation neil has turned his attention to squash racquets and has al ready begun to assume a prom inent position in this sport which is closely allied to his favorite julius seligson the last of the trio has yet to represent le high in varsity competition but will be eligible for the 1928 team last year he was a freshman and although twice national indoor junior cham pion he was unable to compete with the varsity his attempt at a third national junior in door championship was frus trated during the christmas va cation when after overwhelm ing all opponents until the final round a former schoolmate frank shields of new york defeated him paired with shields he had little difficulty in running through all opposition to his first national junior in door doubles title during the most recent season he was eas tern new york turf champion and also the champion of brook lyn the finish of the detroit invitation tournament found him at the top of the list and he was runner-up in the men's championship of new york these and other excellent show ings caused him to be rated 7th in the eastern states division as recently published notice with this issue the brown and white suspends publica tion until after mid-terms at a meeting of the mathe matics journal and research society held at eleven o'clock tuesday in room 31 packer hall professor j b reynolds presented a paper on chains the meeting was well attended by members of the faculty es pecially those in the department of mathematics which was fully represented the contents of professor reynold's paper dealt with the derivation of a formula per taining to the motion of chain on wire with this formula as a basis professor reynolds was able to calculate eleven separ ate and distinct results which previously it had been neces sary to compute independently during the second term the mathematics journal and re search club will meet on alter nate thursdays at eleven the purpose of the society is to pro mote original research and read ing in mathematics and the papers and discussions to which its meetings will be d evoted will be of particular interest to members of the faculty and the more advanced students of mathematics the cyanide club is once again busily engaged in its pro gram of attempting to create better understanding and more friendly feeling between lehigh and those colleges which it meets in athletic competition all visiting teams have been met and entertained thus far it has meant the expenditure of quite a bit of time and energy as yet no definite line of pro cedure has been determined at the next regular meeting of the society in february the man agers of the various sports will be invited to take part in a gen eral discussion of a definite line of proceedure which the club may carry out cyanide will have a corner of jack petriken's office in drown hall in which the files of the society will be kept each of the twenty members will have a card upon which will be placed his assignments for the coming year all correspon dence from visiting teams will also be filed in the office in this way the club will have a definite headquarters where students may get in touch with any of its members at this time the constitution of the society is being revised to a considerable extent prog ress is also noted on the blank form that is to be sent to all visiting teams the form will ask for information regarding the plans of the teams the num ber of men the names of their fraternities if any and such items it will be a case of lehigh versus lafayette again tomor row night in taylor gymna sium for both the varsity and freshman quintets of the time honored rivals are scheduled to do battle although the year ling game will be interesting it will be the varsity clash that will attract the capacity crowd which is expected captain billmeyer and his teammates must account for a victory to satiate the desires of their cohorts for only the pres ent seniors can recall a defeat at the hands of lafayette in the court game coach jim baldwin's team took the first game of the 1924-1925 series but dropped the second game with the down the river boys 29-19 and a question remained as to which was the better team to prevent a recurrence of the situation three games were played in each of the fol lowing two seasons lehigh fives have reigned supreme in this period decisive scores re main on the record books as evi dence of this fact so the re sult of the coming tilt means either a break in the string of brown and white victories or a continuation of the number of successive wins to seven mike miller lafayette's coach will bring a strong but inconsistent team to bethlehem included in the starting line-up are three lettermen and two sophomores of whose individ ual ability there is no question leisenring houser and mcguire are figures well known to ath letic followers at lehigh the former is a good shot houser football end is big and fast and deadly under the basket mcguire the captain is play ing his third season for lafay ette and is the type of guard who has an affinity for the man assigned to him lipetz will be remembered as the diminu tive but quick and clever for ward of last year's frosh five and sherwood as the husky cen ter with the uncanny eye he played football this fall and now is first-string guard in basket ball foremost among the ma roon reserves is the huge grid iron leader atkinson who has been regular center for the past two seasons then there are this football players chimenti and sarni who substituted at guards last year and messinger and reaser forwards who have played against the bethlehem collegians before terwilliger phillips clouser and kelly com plete the squad but it is the eastonian's rec ord that makes a choice of the possible winner difficult re vealing unexpected strength la fayette began the season in an impressive manner after break ing even in the first two games with drexel and western mary landc successive victories fol lowed on foreign floors over two major opponents navy and princeton then lafayette con tinued its brilliant streak by swamping moravian 64-23 in the memorial gym at easton suddenly the fate of miller's proteges changed and a row of defeats followed despite the fact that the leopards were playing on their home floor rutgers veteran team finished on top in a close game and the quintet from little upsala college of east orange n j which had held yale leaders of the eas tern intercollegiate league to a 19-14 score outscored the leopards by four points city continued on page four on saturday night as prelim inary to the varsity game the freshman basketball team will meet the lafayette freshmen at seven o'clock in the lower gym this is the first game for the freshman quintet since the holidays and the second since the season opened the first re sulting in a defeat by a close margin at the hands of the freeland mining and mechani cal school since freshman basketball was first organized at lehigh no team has lost at home to the lafayette year lings so that the team should come through with a victory if this precedent means anything last year's home game was won in the very last minute of play on a field goal by many after a game which was anybody's un til the very last moment since the last game there have been a great many changes in the team so that aside from the fact that there will be sev eral new faces in the line-up it is not definitely known just who will start the game how ever mcelroy lohmeyer dav is stewart decker and nem etz will undoubtedly see ser vice during the game schaub has an injured foot and so it is doubtful if he will be able to play this is the first of the series with the lafayette frosh the next game taking place at easton after mid-years cash prizes will be awarded for the best editorials published in college journals during the academic year 1927-28
