has lessened and he now rests much more comfortably than when first stricken lehigh swimmers lose to cadets mccarthy takes lone first place for b & w in great race omicron delta kappa held its regular meeting last thurs day evening january twelfth at the phi delta theta house the main topic of discussion was the committee on publica tion's request to have the proposed students activities fee raised twenty-five cents none of the other participants in the fee felt that they could reduce their share by that amount so the only other course open was to raise the fee itself there fore 0 d k passed on the res olution that the fee be four dollars one dollar and seventy five cents of which should go to the brown and white this fee is part of the plan of re organization of this newspaper which will go into partial ef fect next semester it was decided that the com mittee on the limitation of ac tivities should meet tuesday january seventeenth the pur pose of this meeting is to pre sent a program which will pre vent the men from indulging in too many activities the petition of allegheny col lege to have a chapter of omi cron delta kappa at that insti tution was granted three active undergraduate members were absent from the meeting the faculty was rep resented by dean mcconn and professor palmer william sheridan wrestling coach at lehigh university for the past fifteen years will be one of the officials who will be present at the first national in tercollegiate wrestling cham pionships which will be held at ames lowa the last part of march the national intercolle giates were much discussed last year but this is the first year that they have become a reality billy came to lehigh when the sport was first established here and during his career he has built up the sport of wrestl ing until it is at present per haps the most popular and suc cessful sport at lehigh when the eastern intercollegiates were first started lehigh be came one of the contesting teams the team has always placed in the upper class at these meets and last year was tied with yale for first place while billy was still in scotland before coming to le high he held many of the wrestling championships in that country and he still is able to hold his own against any of the contestants on the mat his appointment as an official at the first national intercollegiate meet is a fit recognition of his service he has officiated at many meets throughout the country during the past years it is not known whether bil ly will take any of his squad to lowa but rumor is to the effect that any lehigh intercol legiate champions will go inter-dorm teams in close fight second round run off by bas ketball teams saturday afternoon address given on transportation mr hearsey division superin tendent at steel co talks in williams hall . that lehigh's chances of re taining the inter-collegiate wrestling championship are good was indicated by their impressive victory over syra cuse saturday 16-11 mcgov ern and miller scored victories over both # of the syracuse inter collegiate champions in hotly contested bouts lehigh con quered in the 115 145 and 175 pound classes and in the heavy weight division nathaniel hill wrestling in his first intercollegiate match made an impressive showing despite his defeat al lewis another newcomer to the mats was also defeated but only by the short time advantage of 1 minute and 15 seconds miller after a year's absence from the mats returned to defeat patter son intercollegiate champion after two extra periods repeating his last year's per formance edward mcgovern defeated okun in the 115-pound class okun was intercollegiate champion last year but fell un der a 5 minute and 47 second time advantage in the 125-pound class tuck er defeated al lewis of lehigh in a close bout with a time ad vantage of 1 minute and 15 seconds novak of syracuse put his team ahead by defeating hill in a furious bout in the 135 pound division with an advan tage of 1 minute and 57 sec onds captain heilman placed le high in the lead by securing a bar and chancery hold on crowe and throwing him in 8 minutes and 25 seconds however cordisco of syra continued on page four industrials hold regular meeting lehigh introduced some hith erto unrecognized fireworks at traditional west point satur day afternoon when they de feated the academy basketeers for the first lehigh victory over a point quintet 30-21 a fusilade of double-deckers in the opening half proved to be a sufficient margin of triumph the brown and white team identical with the one which swamped haverford began in a whirlwind fashion previously determined to successfully hur dle one of their hardest games on the schedule not content with more than doubling the score at half time captain billmeyer's men prevented the losers from chalking up a single point until fourteen minutes had elapsed while holding the opposition scoreless lehigh forged into a 12-0 lead as a result of brilliant passing and accurate shooting many levin and levine were bulwarks in this offense with the entire team impregnable on the defense holding the army to four baskets this was one more than they annexed in the final half draper substituting for flood and finishing as the star of his team tallied the initial field goal spurred on by this feeble beginning army worked the ball through the nets for three additional two-pointers and a couple of fouls the half ended with many repeating his performance of the haverford game that of sending a long shot for a beautiful core continued on page four while the scoring of lehigh was limited to eight points in the second half their splendid passing coupled with team work was not to be overshadow ed four successful foul shots by draper and three field goals large crowd at band tea dance two new records the lehigh mermen journey ed to west point on saturday to be defeated by the team rep resenting the army 47-15 one brilliant light shown however even though it was in the face of defeat ; mccarthy one of the stars from last year's fresh man team set a new record for the west point pool when he swam the 50-yard dash in 0:25 the team greatly missed the services of herb hobbs and coxe who were ineligible without them two second and four third places were the only points the swimmers could add to mccarthy's five pelizzona and van nort captured second position in the 200-yard breast stroke and in the diving events respectively webbe leader mcclain and hertzler each took third place honors in their races pelizzona swam against very fast time inasmuch as dwyer of the academy broke their record for the 200-yard breast stroke swim in 2:35 2-5 the meet showed up weak nesses on the part of the lehigh team which must be polished — won by gar continued on page four lehigh university calender what i 8 it all about what is an educated man what is an education these and re lated questions were the ones discussed by the college lecturer of last week mr fred w smith of the world alliance for friendship among the nations in the address delivered at the south side high school last thursday the twelfth the solution of these prob lems was reached in a rounda bout though distinctly edifying way the speaker first gained the confidence of his audience by addressing them not in the time honored fashion as the most intelligent group of young men that he had seen anywhere but a common ordinary lot of dubs such as i could meet any where such frankness was appealing and the audience strained for every word which followed mr smith then qualified his statement by congratulating the student body first because it was identified with a well known institution and secondly because they were part of a great psychology throughout the world living in a time of great intellectual survival he also extended felicitations to his hearers for having the longest holiday they would enjoy for many years to come education as the lecturer pointed out is rapidly increas ing in scope and intensity throughout the world walsh the historian announces that there is a world-wide field for education greater than at any time since the 13th century in the united states an exam ination of the intended legacies of wealthy men indicates that more money will be spent : on education in the next twenty five years than has been spent for the century and a quarter preceding this age all the larger universities of the coun try are turning away twice as many students as they can ac commodate ten times the ca pacity of the university of mos cow applied for admission in the last year all japan said mr smith is going to school rich and poor old and young the strik ing feature of every japanese town is the modern school build ing that country realizes the continued on page three william l raeder of the class of 1876 has just present ed to the civil engineering de partment a pen topographic drawing made by himself while a student at lehigh it was made from an actual survey run by his class in the spring of 1873 the survey covered a por tion of fountain hill contig uous to the lehigh river and included old calypso island the drawing is wonderfully well executed and most of the present day classes would have to sit up and take notice to equal it the work was done while dr charles mcmillan was in charge of the department dr mcmillan later left lehigh to establish the department of civil engineering at princeton the department appreciates mr raeder's interest in pre senting the drawing in a frame which is hung in the senior drawing room in pack er hall incidentally it was in this room that the drawing was originally made in the gift mr raeder is dis playing one of his many inter ests in lehigh he being one of a group of men which has helped develop many of lehigh's traditions it will be remem bered that billy as he is affec tionately known by both alum ni and undergraduates helped choose the college colors — the brown and white he was also one of the men who launched the first college paper the le high journal and was largely instrumental in organizing the university baseball club being captain of the same it was his class who brought in the cus tom of the cremation of text books logic and rhetoric being the first books subjected to this fate mr raeder was forced to leave college during his senior year but was later awarded an honorary degree by the uni versity since leaving college he has been very successful in the insurance business and has also achieved for himself an en viable fame as an orator mr raeder is now district manager of the mutual life in surance company of new york with offices in scranton two years ago he returned to le high as chief speaker at the alumni banquet o d k members a picture of the members of omicron delta kappa will be taken at mccaa's studio on thursday january 19 at 12 o'clock noon all mem bers are wanted an unusually large crowd at tended the tea dance given by the lehigh band saturday aft ernoon in drown hall with excellent music by an eleven piece orchestra led by d g fluharty to guarantee good dancing the students turned out in crowds and flocked into the dance with many girls pres ent from cedar crest bishop thorpe and fem-sem every body danced to their hearts con tent from 4 o'clock until 6:30 since the band played gratis it is estimated that the profits were unusually large and that the budget of the lehigh band has swelled to new heights due to the good support of the stu dents this is the first in current history that the band has given a function of this sort the fact that it was so well receiv ed and provided a social affair for the week-end may cause the musical organization to repeat the event at some future date freshman basket ball vs lafayette freshmen taylor gymnasium taylor gym 8:00 p m varsity basketball while the varsity was win ning at west point saturday afternoon three dormitory quin tets b c and price hall emerged victorious in taylor gymnasium against e a and d respectively the games marked the second round of the league which is meeting with the success and spirit which was accorded last year contrary to expectations the b players experienced little trouble in beating e 36-13 bollman with 14 points and spangler with 9 were the lead ing point-getters price hall proved too much for the smaller d team to combat the brew ery boys won after a tussle 24 15 c winners of the league championship last year contin ued at their usual speed in trimming the highly spirited a team 35-18 the league will be divided into two halves this year with the winners of each lining-up in a play-off series to decide the winner with this method in vogue a team which encounter ed ill success in the three the industrial engineering society held its second meeting of the year last thursday night at 7:30 in the geology lecture room of williams hall the first thing on the program was a short business meeting in which several important mat ters were discussed and which was followed by an informal lecture given by dr j h wil ey lehigh 05 immediately after he was graduated he became a member of the lehigh faculty and taught here for many years in 1921 he retired from this po sition in order to perfect and patent several of his own in ventions he entered the toy manufacturing business and started a plant in bethlehem his lecture was illustrated throughout by drawings on the blackboard and various models which he brought with him for the purpose dr wiley ex plained the various difficulties encountered in the manufactur ing business and pointed out the progress and development ne cessary to put goods on the market b & w.staff a picture of the entire brown and white staff will be taken at mccaa's studio at 12 o'clock noon on wed nesday january 18 all mem bers are urged to be present those who took the oppor tunity to hear the lecture on industrial transportation giv en in charge of the service department and responsible for construction work electri cal and mechanical repairs and the operation of the philadel phia bethlehem and new eng land railroad although the philadelphia bethlehem and new england railroad has its entire one hundred and forty five miles of track located with in the territory covered by the bethlehem steel company's plant it is just as much a rail road as the lehigh valley or the reading and is under the jurisdiction of the interstate commerce commission in the handling of freight it receives the cooperation of four other railroads which
