cation organization of the brown and white staff into a labora tory course in journalism to car ry one hour of english credit a semester will be effected at the commencement of the second semester as the result of a un animous vote of the faculty monday afternoon january 9 this evening coach billy sheridan takes his matmen to syracuse to wrestle the orange and black grapplers the bout tomorrow night gives every in dication of being a close contest inasmuch as syracuse will try to avenge their defeat of last year at the hands of the lehigh team the 115-pound fracas will de termine no doubt the intercol legiate champion for this year okun the syracuse lightweight defeated eddie mcgovern in the wrestling classis last year after receiving defeat in the dual meet early in the season mc govern will give okun no little difficulty in protecting his crown as champion during the coming season and this first contest of the year may be a determining factor in it wednesday afternoon al lew is won a place on the team by gaining a time decision over palm he has worked with the varsity for only a year but his knowledge of the sport over comes his lack of experience and he should give tucker the 125 pounder for syracuse strong opposition either brick or hill will make the trip bearing the colors of lehigh against novak or peazy who continued on page four lehigh's basketball team which placed itself on the prop er side of the ledged at the ex pense of the haverford five wednesday night faces a dif ficult assignment tomorrow for geary's men are scheduled to match tosses with the undefeat ed army quintet on the west point floor for the past two years the cadets have constituted a jinx to lehigh's court teams the greatest five in the history of the university that coached by chief lingle and captained by benny weinstein met its only defeat in 14 starts in the army stronghold two years ago the game which was played a few days after the return from the christmas holidays ended with the score at 31-22 in fav or of coach blood's men last year under different conditions the generals earned a close 24 22 decision in a thrilling second period spurt after the rivals had the faculty monday january 9 upon the joint recommen dation of its committee on educational policy and of the board of publications reads as follows that beginning with the second semester of this year any student may be permitted to enroll in the course in journalism a one-hour course for members of the brown and white staff in addition to whatever other courses he would ordinarily take in his curriculum the motion which was adopted unanimously also provided for the creation of the course mentioned campus officer arrests man in williams hall after fight heavy and lightweight ma terial scaree — middle weight classes strong the second issue of the le high review will be out some time about the middle of next week it will contain the usual varied and interesting assort ment of articles by leading men of lehigh and elsewhere on topics of present attention among others the following contributions should prove par ticularly attractive two ar ticles on college spirit which take opposite viewpoints one by w j scarlett singing its praises in no uncertain terms the other by robert e serber who thinks that college spirit is entirely wrong dean mc conn has written a short article entitled the mind of the bur ro then a history of foot ball at lehigh will appear written by mr maxwell who is now filling mr buchanan's place as alumni secretary marven sidney writes on new clothes for lehigh and r max goepp jr on literature and the engineer of course there will also be the part ii of professor fox's joy riding with anatole and the usual science and technology depart ment the review would like to con stitute itself an organ for the discussion of current campus problems and to this end wel comes any and all communica tions from the students altho publication is not to be under stood as guaranteed the board reserving the right of rejection industrials hold meeting tonight last monday afternoon the regular monthly meeting of the faculty was held in the facul ty room of the memorial build ing in this meeting the mem bers of the faculty approved a list of rules and regulations for the annual public speaking con test these rules and regula tions are as follows 1 the contest shall be held on february 22 or on the day designated by the university to commemmorate the birth of washington 2 there shall be six prizes : one first prize of 25 one second prize of 15 one third prize of 10 in each of two separ ate groups 1 b a and business students 2 engin eering students 3 the contest shall be open to any student not a freshman who is in good standing and who has completed acceptably some course in public speak ing at lehigh university 4 candidates shall declare their intention of entering the con test by december 1 and shall by january 5 submit an or iginal written speech of about 1500 words on some topic of their own choice the thought of which can be made the ba sis of an 8-minute speech in the final oral contest the three men in each group of candidates whose written speeches shall rank highest in excellence of thought and lit erary form and whose work in public speaking has been satisfactory shall become the six final contestants continued on page four council selects several dates lehigh annihilated haverford by a 59-27 decision in taylor gymnasium wednesday eve ning following a general shake-up of the entire squad after the crescent a c and princeton reversals coach geary presented a revised line up which proceed to score 27 field goals before the final whis tle the injection of new blood into the line-up reacted favor ably the effects of the new combination were evident con tinually with better passing more accurate shooting and plenty of fighting spirit al though the score was not close at any period of the fray the crowd was in tense moments at times as a result of the splen did showing from the opening goal by levin until many sank his eighth double-decker as the whistle blew the visitors never had a chance their height and raginess meant nothing to the brown and white who were passing and scoring with enthu siasm and reckless abandon led by five two-pointers by captain billmeyer lehigh had no trouble in closing the initial half ahead 34-12 billmeyer many and levin tallied 12 poin ters before the haverfordians came through with a foul goal a few moments latter the home sters were leading 19-5 conclu ding with sensatioßal goals by many and billmeyer the in dividual efforts of downward the visiting guard kept his team in the run with 3 field goals haverford opened auspicious ly in the second half when they annexed seven points before lehigh began working a con tinual barrage at the nets by many who dropped the ball through five times and hesse billmeyer and levine twice each permitted a quick meeting last thursday at drown hall the new coach voiced a few of his ideas on the football situation here at le high and outlined his future plan of action an honest-to goodness spring practice will start on april 12 only men connected with some varsity squad at that time will be ex cused all others must report if they want due consideration in the fall regular practice will undoubtedly commence on sep tember 10 there will be no scrub team in the future but there will be lots of scrimmage every friday night in the fall there will be scrimmage between different combination of those who are not selected for the game or to make the out-of town trip these scrimmages will be carefully watched for any promising material ; no man will be given the opportunity to say that he has not had a fair chance the assistant coaches will all be lehigh men with the possible exception of one such is austy's hope at any rate all quarterbacks will either take the theory of football course that is given by bosey reiter or attend a special class held by austy twice every week doctor richards was at the meeting and addressed the group in a talk that was clear cut and impressive after ex pressing his sincere optimism for the coming season and his utter faith in the unanimous se lection of the new coach doc tor richards discussed football from the scholastic side he stressed clean playing on the gridiron and noted that the stand lehigh has taken in the football world in regard to sub sidized football has net with favorable comment from all sides continued on page four despite the fact that the roll call revealed a great number of men absent there were over 100 present it was an enthusias tic gathering austy had each of the men present furnish him with data ranging from name and address to the middle ini tial and occupation of parent or guardian austy intends hav ing a special blank attached to the regular registration slip with the professors names and civil society to hold meeting the civil engineering so ciety will hold its first meeting of the new year monday night january 16 at 7 30 the meeting will open with a short business discussion followed by an illustrated lecture given by albert a northrop of the stone and webster engineering firm the subject of this lecture is to be the new power development of the philadelphia electric power co which is situated at conowingo maryland on the susqnehanna river when the work on this plant has been completed it will be the largest of its kind in the country be ing capable of a total output of 350,000 h p and consisting of seven units each producing 50,000 h p as usual there will be the customary refreshments and smokes those who are not members of this society are urged to come as the meeting is expected to be of unusual in terest the lehigh band will hold its first tea dance of the year to morrow afternoon in drown hall the dance will be from 4 to 6:30 p m an 11-piece orchestra under the direction of dave fluharty will furnish the syncopation this orchestra has played at most of the dances so far this year the committee in charge of the dance has made arrangements to have girls from fem-sem b-thorpe and cedar crest present the subscrip tion will be one dollar either per couple or stag the chap erons will be fred trafford and prof and mrs e edgar shields the purpose of the dance is to raise money to meet gome of the assessments which the band has and buy the new caps which have been ordered be cause of the interval since the last college dance this social opportunity should be enthusias tically received by the entire university this will be the last opportunity to go to a tea dance before the examinations as there are no more dances this semester three important dates were set at the last meeting of the interfraternity council held monday night one was the an nouncement that sword and crescent has set april 21 as sub-freshman day the council has set the week end of april 28 for spring house parties and has granted permission to the scabbard and blade society for a tea dance to be held friday afternoon april 27 three tentative dates for the fall house parties were men tioned and will be voted on at the next meeting they are the week-end of the gettysburg game october 7 the muhlen berg game october 28 and the rutgers game november 12 professor bartlett suggested that each house and dormitory organize a relay team of four men each man to swim fifty yards this suggestion was ac cepted and the meet will be held shortly a plan of cooperative buying was discussed and will be voted upon at the next meeting the interfraternity basketball schedule was submitted and ap pears in this issue with the passing of almost two months since the first call for candfdates the freshman wrestlers have gradually begun to round into good shape with a month more of practice be fore the first meet it would seem as if coach sheridan's newest grapplers would b e ready to put on a very credit able exhibition against their prep school adversaries from blair billy sheridan reports a very good turnout both as to quantity and quality of candi dates for all the middleweight classes but as usual the heavy weights are rather scarce also strange to say the 115 and 125 pounders are discouragingly few in number at the present time a goodly number of the lighter men reported at the beginning of the season but have grad ually dropped off since then this decrease in number of men on the mats each afternoon is probably attributable to the fast approach of the mid-year exams and consequently coach sheridan expects that an in creased activity will result im mediately after the first of february the frosh schedule calls for five meets of which three are on foreign mats and freshmen are reminded that try-outs will be held weekly for each sche duled meet and that positions on the team are always open especially are the light and heavyweight classes offering an opportunity to any of the class of 31 who have any ability as grapplers freshman schedule feb 11 — blair away feb 18 — columbia away feb 25 — cornell away march 3 — bethlehem high away march 10 — franklin & mar shall home the second meeting of the year for the industrial engin eering society will be held to night at 7 30 o'clock in the ge ology lecture room of williams hall all members are urged to be present as several impor tant matters will be discussed during the evening a lecture will be given by dr j h wil ey lehigh 05 all those who are interested in this lecture are asked to at tend as the guests of the so ciety after the lecture the meeting will be concluded in the usual manner with ice-cream and cake dr wiley has had a very in teresting career since he was graduated immediately after receiving his diploma he be came a member of the lehigh faculty and was associated with professor franklin later he retired from the teaching field to develop and patent sev eral of his own inventions and enter the toy manufacturing business one of his most suc cessful inventions is the big bang cannon a harmless toy which produces a loud noise by means of the ignition of gas generated by the action of wa ter upon carbide the gas is ignited by a flint and steel me chanism dr wiley's company is one of the most outstanding of those which manufacture toys the course will be included as an elective in the rosters of the colleges of business admin istration engineering and lib eral arts and may be elected by any student in addition to the other courses required by his curriculum it will be possible furthermore for any student in future years to elect brown and white for one hour's english credit each semester the credit to be acceptable upon petition in lieu of other electives towards a degree in any one of the three colleges plans for reorganization of the brown and white commenc ed shortly after the coming to lehigh last fall as instructor in journalism of c d mcdougall formerly a staff correspondent for the united press associa tions and instructor in the me dill school of journalism of northwestern university upon the request of president c r richards mr macdougall sub mitted a plan for the creation of a journalism course to meet once weekly in three sections a definite plan of organiza tion based upon the original proposals was adopted at a meeting of the board of pub lications last week at the same time the resolution which subsequently was adopted by both the faculty committee on educational policy and the fac ulty itself was passed the plan as adopted carries the provision that present mem bers of the brown and white board be retained in their pres ent capacities following the re organization in february it also provides that next year's managing editor and editor-in chief be chosen from the pres ent assistant managers continued on page four election of managing editors editors-in-chief and two news editors in future years will be by the board of publications upon recommendations by out after having successfully eluded detection for three months the overcoat thief who has been preying upon le high students with phenomenal luck since last october was caught wednesday morning by campus officer thomas malone just as he prepared to leave williams hall wearing a top coat belonging to w t odgers a junior mechanical engineer the arrest was made after pri vate detectives and campus po lice had spent weeks trying to put a stop to the most persis tent thievery that has ever oc curred at lehigh the man ar rested wednesday is frank ruhf 28 of allentown and is not a student he was taken to the memor ial building as soon as he was overpowered at williams hall where he offered stubborn re sistence to malone and the de tectives who were called the arrest was made about ten o'clock in the morning ruhf was questioned for seven hours until 5:30 wednesday evening but refused to confess to any of the other robberies that have resulted in a loss of about thir ty coats in three months he was finally placed under bail of 1,000 and taken to easton yes terday morning he is liable to imprisonment of from one to two years according to one of the detectives employed by the university officer malone described the robbery wednesday as being ex ceedingly clever the man en tered williams hall and went directly to the second floor where he selected a grey coat he has restricted himself largely to grey and blue coats because they are almost impos sible to identify put it on and started to leave his appear ance was that of a college stu house and dormitory organize a relay team of four men each man to swim fifty yards this suggestion was ac cepted and the meet will be held shortly a plan of cooperative buying was discussed and will be voted upon at the next meeting the interfraternity basketball schedule was submitted and ap pears in this issue with the passing of almost two months since the first call for candfdates the freshman wrestlers have gradually begun to round into good shape with a month more of practice be fore the first meet it would seem as if coach sheridan's newest grapplers would b e ready to put on a very credit able exhibition against their prep school adversaries from blair billy sheridan reports a very good turnout both as to quantity and quality of candi dates for all the middleweight classes but as usual the heavy weights are rather scarce also strange to say the 115 and 125 pounders are discouragingly few in number at the present time a goodly number of the lighter men reported at the beginning of the season but have grad ually dropped off since then this decrease in number of men on the mats each afternoon is probably attributable to the fast approach of the mid-year exams and consequently coach sheridan expects that an in creased activity will result im mediately after the first of february the frosh schedule calls for five meets of which three are on foreign mats and freshmen are reminded that try-outs will be held weekly for each sche duled meet and that positions on the team are always open especially are the light and heavyweight classes offering an opportunity shall home the second meeting of the year for the industrial engin eering society will be held to night at 7 30 o'clock in the ge ology lecture room of williams hall all members are urged to be present as several impor tant matters will be discussed during the evening a lecture will be given by dr j h wil ey lehigh 05 all those who are interested in this lecture are asked to at tend as the guests of the so ciety after the lecture the meeting will be concluded in the usual manner with ice-cream and cake dr wiley has had a very in teresting career since he was graduated immediately after receiving his diploma he be came a member of the lehigh faculty and was associated with professor franklin later he retired from the teaching field to develop and patent sev eral of his own inventions and enter the toy manufacturing business one of his most suc cessful inventions is the big bang cannon a harmless toy which produces a loud noise by means of the ignition of gas generated by the action of wa ter upon carbide the gas is ignited by a flint and steel me chanism dr wiley's company is one of the most outstanding of those which manufacture toys the course will be included as an elective in the rosters of the colleges of business admin istration engineering and lib eral arts and may be elected by any student in addition to the other courses required by his curriculum it will be possible furthermore for any student in future years to elect brown and white for one hour's english credit each semester the credit to be acceptable upon petition in lieu of other electives towards a degree in any one of the three colleges plans for reorganization of the brown and white commenc ed shortly after the coming to lehigh last fall as instructor in journalism of c d mcdougall formerly a staff correspondent for the united press associa tions and instructor in the me dill school of journalism of northwestern university upon the request of president c r richards mr macdougall sub mitted a plan for the creation of a journalism course to meet once weekly in three sections a definite plan of organiza tion based upon the original proposals was adopted at a meeting of the board of pub lications last week at the same time the resolution which subsequently was adopted by both the faculty committee on educational policy and the fac ulty itself was passed the plan as adopted carries the provision that present mem bers of the brown and white board be retained in their pres ent capacities following the re organization in february it also provides that next year's managing of publications upon recommendations by out after having successfully eluded detection for three months the overcoat thief who has been preying upon le high students with phenomenal luck since last october was caught wednesday morning by campus officer thomas malone just as he prepared to leave williams hall wearing a top coat belonging to w t odgers a junior mechanical engineer the arrest was made after pri vate detectives and campus po lice had spent weeks trying to put a stop to the most persis tent thievery that has ever oc curred at lehigh the man ar rested wednesday is frank ruhf 28 of allentown and is not a student he was taken to the memor ial building as soon as he was overpowered at williams hall where he offered stubborn re sistence to malone and the de tectives who were called the arrest was made about ten o'clock in the morning ruhf was questioned for seven hours until 5:30 wednesday evening but refused to confess to any of the other robberies that have resulted in a loss of about thir ty coats in three months he was finally placed under bail of 1,000 and taken to easton yes terday morning he is liable to imprisonment of from one to two years according to one of the detectives employed by the university officer malone described the robbery wednesday as being ex ceedingly clever the man en tered williams hall and went directly to the second floor where he selected a grey coat he has restricted himself largely to grey and blue coats because they are almost impos sible to identify put it on and started to leave his appear ance was that of a college stu
