students were shocked to hear that bosey reiter one of the most popular and highly esteemed professors at lehigh had been seriously ill for over a week for several days he had been especially bad due to heart trouble resulting from over work he has been confined to his bed since shortly after christmas although he is much improved at the present time bosey has passed the last several nights very comfortably and seems to be on the road to recovery he was able to sit up in bed and read the papers on sunday and will probably be able to get out very shortly the pre-medical society of lehigh held its last meeting of the year 1927 on tuesday de cember 20 the gathering was large in spite of the proximity of the christmas holidays pres ident longacre called the meet ing to order and proceeded to announce that the scheduled speaker for the evening dr leibert of st lake's hospital was unable to be present due to a last minute call to new york in his place professor hall delivered an interesting talk on sex hormones which was well received after the talk plans were made for tak ing a picture of the society for the epitome as usual refresh ments were served before the group disbanded plan to revise brown and white wrestlers train for first meet reorganization of newspap er and board to occur soon to hold trials this week for meet with syracuse next saturday • a new feature in artistic de coration upon which the sen ior class book committee is now working is expected to add much to the photographs used in the senior section of the epitome a new type of bord er is to be used around the pho tos in a manner which will make them stand out advan tageously class and society pictures are being treated in this fashion also something new in the general decoration of the book is being after noon preceding the holidays the result of the telegraphic vote is printed in other columns of this issue sport schedules in freshman basketball swimming and base ball were approved subject to faculty recognition was the ratification of the varsity base ball schedule sanction was given the varsity lacrosse and tennis schedules the formulation of the exec utive committee consisting of w billmeyer 28 professor f v larkin and mr d m pet ty signifies the wishes of the board to eliminate the possibil ity of any questionable decisions which may arise in the future it was moved and passed that the committee construct a gen eral policy regarding the award ing of l's and a by-law for the election of team captains re ports will be presented to the board at the next meeting the report of the football committee was accepted and will be put into a by-law as fol lows that the name of the com mittee handling football shall be the football advisory com mittee this committee shall con sist ed to speak mr crosman is an exceedingly interesting speaker to listen to and his wide experiences with the bell telephone company should prove to be highly interesting to the student body tommy burge president of the arcadia recommended to the committee that arthur todd a graduate of princeton university and now head of the sociology department at north western be invited to speak here for the last of the series of lectures which will be held in april tommy heard mr todd speak while attending the convention of student councils at nebraska last month and he believes that mr todd has basketball game to the speedy princeton five in a game played on the latter's court last sat urday night by a 43-30 count princeton returning from a somewhat disastrous christmas trip showed an entire reversal of form outplaying the brown and white quintet in both floor work and basket-shooting both teams got off to a slow start but after whiteett tiger forward broke the ice with a long shot from the floor the game speeded up with prince ton keeping it's lead bob ben nett scored several sensational shots in the early part of the game he and many being the only lehigh players who could consistantly break through the tiger defense with foot orange center and thoburn tiny forward do ing sensational work princeton inserted several substitutes into the fray the new men did al most as well as the regulars had done princeton's offense was conspicuous for the excel lent teamwork and ability to break through the lehigh de fense lehigh could not cope with the speed shown by the improved tiger team nor with the sensational shots mads by it from all parts of the floor the game with princeton was the first test that lehigh has had to compare this year's team with that of afternoon the board of publications met in a special session to consider plans for a rather complete reorgan ization of the brown and white board professor fretz the chairman presided the first matter to be considered was a plan originated by omicron delta kappa to establish a stu dent activities fee in place of the present method of solicita tion by the college organization the question was raised as to how much of the fee the brown and white should receive which the board felt necessi tated a careful study of the pa per's needs under such a pro gram a sub-committee com posed of professor mcdougall ward wiegand and fred whal ey was appointed to draw up a budget for the coming year in that budget will be included for the first time a definite salary for each of the following of fices : editor-in-chief manag ing editor business manager circulation manager and ad vertising manager the most important business of the meeting consisted in the consideration of a draft of eight articles outlining the plan for reorganizing the brown and white board and the present system of elections and tying it in with the course in journal ism recently inaugurated at le high the draft as presented by professor mcdougall and dean mcconn was the result of the discussion in two previous meetings of plans submitted by president richards dean mc conn and professor mcdougall after some discussion and some slight changes the board passed the first five of these articles leaving the last three to be con sidered at a later date continued on page four those passed by the board provided for the election cf an editor-in-chief a managing editor and two news editors by the board of publications upon proper recommendation from the instructor in journal ism the retiring editor-in chief and the retiring manag ing editor an editorial coun cil was created to advise with the editor-in-chief upon the editorial policy of the paper and a new position on the bus with the syracuse meet less than a week off the varsity wrestlers are gradually round ing into shape for their initial contest of the season coach sheridan has been instructing the men with some new holds and they have been working with each other daily the definite line-up for this saturday's meet has not been determined yet but it is quite probable that the same men who won in their respective weight classes in the inter class meet will wrestle for le high this week tryouts will start on tuesday afternoon to determine definitely the line-up eddie mcgovern will doubtless have no trouble in holding down his position in the 115-pound class it may be of interest to know that on saturday mc govern will wrestle okun of syracuse last season's inter collegiate champion in that weight and eddie has a good chance of getting revenge for his defeat last year in the 125-pound class harry palm will probably be the most likely conductor although al lewis has been showing up pretty well thus far this sea son john denise and brick are the strongest contenders in the 135-pound class captain bill heilman has been moved up to the 145-pound class this year and should be very suc cessful throughout the whole season hutchins of last year's freshman team or art landis will wrestle in the 158-pound class art lehr is a practical certainty for the 175-pound class and tubby miller in the heavyweight division the meet this saturday will give lehigh wrestling fans a chance to estimate the prob able strength of this year's team and also to get a line on what to expect for the remain der of the season many men have been turning out regularly for the sport and have been training assiduously there have been an especially large number of freshmen re sounding to the call in prepara tion for their first meet thirty-three of the forty eight states and the district of columbia are represented in the student body of lehigh univer sity this year in addition four teen foreign countries and ter ritories have one or more na tives enrolled here this latter list includes alaska argentine canada china columbia costa rica cuba germany japan mexico nicaragua peru por to rico and siam continued on page four as is to be expected penn sylvania the home state is far in the lead in the number of its sons in attendance at the bethlehem institution with slightly less than half of the total enrollment as residents of the keystone state new jer sey and new york are almost tied for second place the re sort state leading the empire state by a margin of twenty one with a total of 311 con necticut is next with with 44 maryland one of the other neighboring states is next with 43 not including 22 from the that lehigh has an excep tionally good library was brought before the eyes of the alumni in the december issue of the lehigh alumni bulletin several pages were devoted to the subject on which appeared some pictures of the rare and old books that are owned by the library the library was founded by the founder of the university asa packer who not only put up a fine and adequate building for the size of lehigh at that time but also endowed the li brary with a half million dol lars dr william chandler the first director of the library made good use of his chance to make lehigh's library forge ahead he enjoyed collecting fine and unusual books and with such a large endowment felt that he could get such books for lehigh his idea was to make this a great library rather than one which had books of interest only to its immediate clientele during the first ten years continued on page four musical clubs there will be an important rehearsal of the symphony orchestra this wednesday january 11th at 7:30 p m in drown hall all who wish to make the upper montclair and new york trip on february 16th and 17th must be there m & c all underclassmen who de sire to compete for manager ial positions in mustard and cheese will meet in drown hall arcadia room thurs day evening at 8 p m after an auspicious start and a sudden slump lehigh's bas ketball team will endeavor to regain its winning stride when it tackles the haverford col lege quintet tomorrow night at 7:30 in the first home game of the new year that the brown and white combination is potentially strong was evidenved in the games against c c n v which has been making an en viable record since its defeat at the hands of billmeyer and his mates and the crescent a c which always fields one of the best club teams in the east sat urday's defeat by princeton was unexpected in that the orange and black has so far exper ienced a poor season and be cause interfraternity tournaments in pool bowling and bridge were begun ; but be cause of the short time in which they could be played and the great number of other activi ties which filled this period not as many matches were played as it was desired to have finished from now on however those in charge of the various tour naments hope that all the fra ternities will apply themselves to getting the matches played off and bring the tournaments to a rapid completion in the first round of the bowling which is an elimina tion tournament phi delta theta defeated psi upsilon delta upsilon defeated lambda chi alpha and sigma chi de feated pi lambda phi these are all matches which have been played and consequently it is necessary to have the re mainder of the first round play ed off as soon as revenge for his defeat last year in the 125-pound class harry palm will probably be the most likely conductor although al lewis has been showing up pretty well thus far this sea son john denise and brick are the strongest contenders in the 135-pound class captain bill heilman has been moved up to the 145-pound class this year and should be very suc cessful throughout the whole season hutchins of last year's freshman team or art landis will wrestle in the 158-pound class art lehr is a practical certainty for the 175-pound class and tubby miller in the heavyweight division the meet this saturday will give lehigh wrestling fans a chance to estimate the prob able strength of this year's team and also to get a line on what to expect for the remain der of the season many men have been turning out regularly for the sport and have been training assiduously there have been an especially large number of freshmen re sounding to the call in prepara tion for their first meet thirty-three of the forty eight states and the district of columbia are represented in the student body of lehigh univer sity this year in addition four teen foreign countries and ter ritories have one or more na
