dents will receive college credit in journalism for the work they do on the brown and white under the direction of mr macdougall an entirely new system is being evolved for the editorial department of the paper in substance the plan calls for the organization of the staff into a regular class meeting weekly and receiving a credit hour in journalism with enrollment open to every lehigh student the election of officers will also be changed to meet new requirements financially the system would create a sinking fund for the paper to be accumulated by the establishment of a regular stu dent fee of one dollar and a half per year to be paid at registration and by higher ad vertising rates on the basis of the increased circulation as the plan has yet to be passed by the faculty and other auth orities further details have been withheld three undergraduates were formally initiated to member ship in the fraternity at the banquet they are r max goepp 28 of philadelphia william j scarlett 28 of many attend first social function of class of 30 this year candidates for the freshman wrestling team are busy getting in trim for a busy wrestling schedule that bodes to be one of the most interesting arrang ed for the first year men in several years the meet with the columbia university frosh is a new feature of the sched ule which has been definitely ratified by the athletic board of the university the first meet of the season is not until the early part of february but the time will be well used in teaching a sport which is rela tively new to the freshmen ward wiegand manager has issued a second call for more candidates for the 175 and the heavyweight divisions there are very few men out for these events when there really should be a large number practicing on the mats the freshman class has many heavy men in it this year and these men should turn out if they possibly can at present there are only three men who are doing com mendable work in the heavy di visions these are chess mo tion and barnard wrestling is one of the most popular sports at lehigh and the best way to keep up the high class teams for which the brown and white is noted is to have the freshman class turn out each year and familiarize itself with the sport with the supervision of billy sheridan and jimmy reed the frosh should learn a great deal about wrestling this year friday evening at drown hall mustard and cheese will produce four dramatic produc tions of a nature which has been overlooked by the club for some years the plays are all of a light and humorous strain and are guaranteed to furnish an enr joyable evening to young and old directed by professor pfander of the english de partment the plays are at pres ent approaching the perfection which marks a careful assign ment of men to the roles in which they most naturally fit the men who will go on the stage friday evening have been practicing continually since be fore thanksgiving and their rehearsals are fast rounding them into a shape which will surely please the most astute lovers of the dramatic it has been felt for some time that mustard and cheese has been somewhat shirking its duty by not providing true dra matics for the students of le high this production which is more or less in the form of an experiment performed to deter mine whether or not dramatics will be welcomed by the present undergraduate generation will surely provide more entertain ment than the ever-popular movies q the boor the tryst ing place and in 1999 are the names of the plays which have been selected for this pre mier presentation they are all sufficiently humorous to pro vide very good entertainment and are at the same time suffi ciently philosophical that they will cause the most meticulous to ponder been hitherto compulsory by this system each student would pay a fee of 3.75 at fall registration 1.50 of which would be for frown and white 50 for arcadia 75 for un ion and 1.00 for class dues thus by paying 3.75 to the combined departments each student would receive the brown and white and be a member of the union for a small sum the tentative sys tem is in use in many schools the size of lehigh and is re ported to have worked to ad vantage in all of them the plan of unifying brown and white arcadia union and class dues under a common fee will go in to effect next september if passed by the faculty o d k also discussed the present method of electing cap tains and managers pointing out where tßere is room for improvement the matter however was deferred to the continued on page two flashing the combination of a whirlwind scoring attack and an impregnable defense lehigh conquered city college of new york in the waining moments of play by a one point margin 27-26 saturday evening sen sational shots by captain bill meyer many and bennett cul minated the lehigh finish which stunned the violet after they had maintained a seem ingly secure advantage of eight points with only five more min utes of struggle five times during the clos ing moments of the hectic play was the score knotted after toppling the c c n y bar rier the brown and white clung tenaciously to their slim lead which tottered as liss of c c n y drew a foul in the last 30 seconds the new york for ward had the opportunity to tie the game but missed when his attempt rolled around the ring and out bennett substituting for hesse who had two personal fouls of him within the first five minutes proved the inspir ing attack of the winners aid ing him greatly were many and billmeyer who scored 7 and 8 points respectively through the combined efforts of these men lehigh scored four long baskets to wipe out the early new york lead after hesse had opened the scoring activities with a beau tiful two-pointer city college headed by liss rubinstein and meisel began to toss them thru the strings and led 10-8 as the first half whistle blew the score was tied several times and lehigh went ahead on a one pointer by marcus only to wit ness goldberg's single basket place his team in the van knowledge and experience of the home court permitted the homesters to pile up a large lead as soon as the second half began with but five minutes continued on page four the christmas number of the burr is now on the press being made up and will be out the middle of this week this is the third issue and promises to be the best put out this sea son both in quality and quan tity it is several pages longer than the last issue and the quality of the contents is sure to be more pleasing than the previous issue the atmosphere of the magazine is of course predominent with the christ mas spirit the art men have shown some real ability in their sketches and a careful selection was made in making up the magazine the issue contains plenty of good humor and the editorial is certain to make a hit competition for positions on the burr staff is extremely lax the editors have issued several calls and tried everything in their power to get more mater ial this is the case in all the departments and if it was not for a certain few men the edi tors themselves would have to write up the magazine it is not as yet too engin eering society physics lec ture room major howell for a long time has been incharge of the con struction of a large amount of protection work on the mississippi river all who are interested are in vited to attend saturday dec 17 4:00 p m frosh tea dance drown hall 7:30 p m varsity basketball vs crescent athletic club taylor gymnasium on december 15 major r p howell corps of engineers u s a will give an illustrated talk on the mississippi river flood and some of its control problems the talk will be given under the auspices of the civil engineering society and a cordial invitation is extended to all who may be interested in the question of flood control the meeting will be held in the physics lecture room at 7:45 p m major howell for a long time has been in charge of the construction of a large amount of protection work on the mis sissippi and according to ma jor general jadwin chief of engineers the major should give a very fine and interesting talk major howell is a very emin ent authority on subjects of this type and has had a vast experience in problems of con trolling floods after he had finished his work on the pro tection construction on the mis sissippi he returned east but later returned to the flood scene to secure pictures for slides the finals of the interclass swimming meet will be run off tomorrow at 4 o'clock in the preliminaries that were held during the latter part of last week there were some very good times chalked up and consider able interest shown the jun iors and seniors took the most active part and will be well represented in the finals coach morrissey would like to see more freshmen take part and will give any frosh that comes out a chance to be entered in the finals the preliminary results : 50-yard free style varsity davis mclachlan hertzler schier ; freshmen cushman enscoe waltman jenkins 150-yard backstroke varsity leader ahlberg daley dela plane freshmen gushman jenkins 100-yard free style varsity pennington hartzler turn ; freshmen jenkins cushman 200-yard breast stroke var lehigh math wizards will have an opportunity to derive financial reward for their pe culiar talents when the mathe matical department begins to offer a series of prizes for the correct solutions of special prob lems the details of the plan which will take effect next semester as outlined by professor toml inson fort new head of the de partment consists in the pub lication of a mathematical prob lem in the brown and white each week the first correct solution submitted each week will be rewarded by a prize of five dollars this innovation is planned to extend over a period of ten weeks each week the problems will appear in the brown and white accompanied by the name of the winner of the previous prob lem although the contestants for some of the problems will be limited to members of par ticular classes the majority of the prizes will be offered to the entire university not to be outdone by the sophomores the freshman class will stage a tea dance in drown hall next saturday aft ernoon in this the first dance put on by the plebes steps are being taken to make it the best of the season the lehigh mountaineers girls from bish opthorpe and cedar crest and extensive decorations are al ready assured the social committee has completed arrangements for the girls from both cedar crest and bishopthorpe to be present and a plentiful supply of girls is therefore certain an extensive decorative plan will transform drown hall and blend with the holiday atmosphere which will prevail upper classmen are urged to support this first social effort of the class of 31 and the freshmen are expected to at tend the class functions . the usual 1.00 both for stags and for couples will be charged as this the first freshman function of the year an un usually large crowd is expected on saturday december 10th the third annual interpretive basketball game was held under the direction of the lehigh val ley association two of the lehigh valley officials took charge of the game which was to illustrate the new rules of the game and to clear up and review some of the older ones which were not very well un derstood the association is made up of all the schools in this district including colleges high schools and preparatory schools and practically all of these schools were represented by their coach their squad or both professor bartlett ar ranged the game picking the teams which played from the freshman squad the rule which prohibits dribbling has been postponed until at least next year this rule came as such a surprise to the country that it has not as yet been officially adopted by the council and so it will not iro continued on page four the sophomore class which has never sponsored an unsuc cessful tea dance maintained its prestige by making its first dance of the current school year held in drown hall from 4 until 6:30 o'clock saturday afternoon both a financial and from bishopthorpe manor and many out-of-town girls who had come to beth lehem primarily for the two fraternity dances in the eve ning were present an efficient commitee direct ed by richard d chapman who also served in the capacity of chairman of the social com mittee last year was responsible for the party decorations which consisted of sprigs of evergreen tastefully placed over colored lights classmen are urged to support this first social effort of the class of 31 and the freshmen are expected to at tend the class functions . the usual 1.00 both for stags and for couples will be charged as this the first freshman function of the year an un usually large crowd is expected on saturday december 10th the third annual interpretive basketball game was held under the direction of the lehigh val ley association two of the lehigh valley officials took charge of the game which was to illustrate the new rules of the game and to clear up and review some of the older ones which were not very well un derstood the association is made up of all the schools in this district including colleges high schools and preparatory schools and practically all of these schools were represented by their coach their squad or both professor bartlett ar ranged the game picking the teams which played from the freshman squad the rule which prohibits dribbling has been postponed until at least next year this rule came as such a surprise to the country that it has not as yet been officially adopted by the council and so it will not iro continued on page four the sophomore class which has never sponsored an unsuc cessful tea dance maintained its prestige by making its first dance of the current school year held in drown hall from 4 until 6:30 o'clock saturday afternoon both a financial and social success a crowd which had both quantity and quality contribut ed to the success of the affair there were 125 paid admis sions about evenly distributed between couples and stags twenty girls from bishopthorpe manor and many out-of-town girls who had come to beth lehem primarily for the two fraternity dances in the eve ning were present an efficient commitee direct ed by richard d chapman who also served in the capacity of chairman of the social com mittee last year was responsible for the party decorations which consisted of sprigs of evergreen tastefully placed over colored lights
