seven frosh importance of electric arc welding is the direct ' cause exhibition basketball game to illustrate new sea son rules symposium aid frosh teams 12 colleges notice frosh in an attempt to arouse a greater degree of interest among the students in regard to the swimming team the department of physical edu cation is awarding bronze medals to the winners of the various events in the tryouts for the team last tuesday the medal was won by jen kins 31 in the 100 - yard free style event his time was 1 minute 2.2 seconds winchester 31 was second in 1 minute and 9 seconds and mcclain 30 was third in 1 minute and 11.2 seconds the next event which will be the 50-yard back stroke will be run off next tuesday after noon at 4 o'clock natators develop promising team preparations are made for inter-class meet next wednesday good material tomorrow the basketball team plays its first game away from home going to new york to play c c n y this game should be more of a test for the brown and white than the game last week against hahnemann was as c c n y always has a good team they have al ready played three games be ing beaten by st johns in the opener 26-21 and beating st francis 18-15 last night they played dartmouth in what must have been a very hard game in the game with st francis c c n y went into the lead in the first half and throughout practically the entire second half held onto the ball without making any great attempt to score field goals they have always been very accurate foul shooters winning many games on these pointers in past sea sons although lehigh's play against hahnemann last week was somewhat ragged this was probably due to the fact that the brown and white charges were not hard pressed at any time however it is expected that the team will play a much better game this week against c c n y to secure their sec ond victory of the season the team has been practicing hard all week to correct faults shown in the hahnemann game coach geary is taking eight players on the trip the five who started the game last week and three substitutes the eight will include billmeyer berman hesse marcus many bennett schulze and either ricard le vin or levine in all probabil ity they should come home with a victory in this the second game and the next to last before christmas the other game be ing with the crescent a c here next week the first regular meeting of the entire brown and white board both business and edi torial staffs for the year was held in the brown and white room in drown hall last tues day afternoon election of twelve new men to the editorial staff and five men to the bus iness staff took place and other business of importance was transacted election of the new men to the editorial staff was on a point basis as the result of an eight week's competition in writing articles o f these twelve men five ' are of the sophomore class and the re maining seven of the fresh man class the sophomores elected to the editorial staff are lyle jones lloyd simon son r p lentz john brown and f w meibach all of these men were approved by the committee on publications with the exception of miebach who was elected to the board sub ject to the approval of that body the freshmen who were elected are as follows rudolph imhoff car claus jr wil liam wagner john w hamp edward squier walton for stall jr and emanuel honig all approved by the committee on publications the new men taken on the business board were rated ac cording to the number of ad vertisements obtained and the number of subscriptions secured by each individual these men have not as yet been approved by the committee on publica tions but were elected subject to the approval of that body they are as follows thomas storm reed laird robert lar amy daniel johnson and al bert davis soph to hold tea dance tomorrow the fencing club opened its season on wednesday evening with an exhibition at drown hall between m r h g gras sone the fencing coach of yale and m rene preichard the coach of lafayette before a highly appreciative audience of about four hundred m gras sone did not confine the exhibi tion to fencing but kept the audience much amused by his explanations and witty side re marks among other things he brought to the attention of the gathering was the fact that al though there are sixty men out for fencing at lehigh they have been forced to content themselves with the instruc tions of a student coach the quality of this coaching is evi denced by their winning from lafayette in 25 and 26 and tying last season but now that lafayette has a professional coach he strongly urges that we procure one also and rec commended a m bouckmans who will be at philadelphia af ter the first of the year he also remarked that although this was the first year lafayette had a professional coach they were entering the intercollegiates between his remarks m grassone managed to display his remarkable skill and that of his opponent with all three of the regularly recognized weapons they opened with the grand salute which illus trates all the principal move ments of fencing then proceed ed with a foil bout the sec ond bout with the epee or du eling swort went to m preich ard after a prolonged struggle the third bout with the sabre proved the most interesting of the three but after much slash ing it went to m grassone the contestants themselves laboratory has been estab lished in the basement of wil liams hall the contributions to the laboratory include a welding motor generator auto matic arc-welding equipment a thompson electric spot welder and oxy-acetylene equipment the laboratory will be used for research work by all the de partments interested including those of the civil electrical mechanical and metallurgical engineering for student thesis work and for undergraduate instruction in various courses the development and research work in welding has centered around the melting exidation and cooling of the metal form ing the weld and for this rea son the new laboratory is under the direction of the department of metallurgical engineering professor n s hibshman of the electrical engineering de partment will be in charge of the electrical layout of the lab oratory the importance of electric arc welding as an industrial process was the direct cause of the establishment of this ' lab oratory on the campus this process is steadily replacing the old method of riveting in many fields welded structures are also cheaper than castings es pecially if the castings are at all complicated the installation of this equip ment will also be of great aid in the annual symposium on weld ing which is held each spring at lehigh when exhibits by manufacturers of welding equipment are on display neigh boring manufacturers and en gineers are the guests of the university and in the evening illustrated addresses and dis cussions are held in collabora tion with the local engineer's club preparations which are being made point to two in track held down the center position on coach harry carpenter's eleven commend ably all season and was high scorer in addition he notch ed six of the nine goals scored by lehigh all fall being direct ly responsible for the only three victories over syracuse navy and lafayette he was excep tionally brilliant in the cornell game although only a sopho more dcx bullard captain elect was the one of the strong est aggregations representing her in the tank that she has had for years among those men who have made a great part of lehigh swimming history in recent years captain charlie leader stands out prominately he is the holder of the middle atlan tic states 200-yard breast stroke he will be ably sup ported in the longer event by cox who has always pushed him to the utmost and peliz oni in the other delaplaine and daly who swam on the freshman team last year are expected to race also herb riker will no doubt be entered for lehigh this year in the 50-yard free style as well as in the 220-yard swim charlie webbe the sensational swimmer of last season will again swim in the gruelling 440 and also in the 220-yard tests bob hertzler is expected to come through in the two short er dashes herb hobbs former middle atlantic title holder will be the teams mainstay in the dives he has two men van nort and davis diving with him who are exceptionally cap able to do so there are also nearly a dozen men out for the dashes from among whom the members of the relay team will be chosen coach morf%sey reports that there are forty men working out regularly for the varsity team as well as thirty for the freshman squad with this ar ray of bountiful material he predicts a successful season for both teams lehigh has a very imposing schedule to face dur ing the winter months and the whole-hearted support of the student body as well as the more active backing of those who take part in the meets is essential to the conclusion of a year such as pete promises wrestling try-outs for the inter-class meet to be held sat urday afternoon december 17 in the lower gymnasium will start next monday the try outs will be a means of select ing a member of each class to compete in the meet the seniors with captain heilman and eddie mcgov ern both l men from last year stand the best chance to win the juniors however have plenty of good material be sides andy lehr another let ter man the sophomores are shaping up well under their captain tom jones and should cause the juniors and seniors no little worry coach sheridan who is coaching the freshmen is confronted with a big problem in the lack of ma terial he has issued a call for more 175-pound and heavy weight men so that there will be plenty of competition in the freshman tryouts lehr is act ing junior captain and heil man is captain of the seniors for next week's meet continued on page four the best men of each of the four classes will wrestle in the inter-class meet the winner of first place in each weight divi sion of the finals will receive a gold medal from prof bartlet the next best will receive silver medals and third place winners this evening at 7:30 the sec ond meeting of the students electrical engineering society will be held in the physics lec ture room the speaker at this meeting will be mr a f cor by who will give a talk on the subject of electrical indicating instruments it is to be an il lustrated lecture containing many interesting slides and a moving picture these society meetings come about once a month and their purpose is to bring the students of the department together in order that they may become better acquainted with each other and with the heads of their department eats and smokes are provided during the course of the evening's enter tainment all those who have not as yet joined this society are urged to come to the meet ing this evening give two dol lars and become regular mem bers the freshman electricals are especially urged to turn out for the meeting so that they can become better acquainted with the other students in their de partment everyone is assur ed of a good time the 1928 bach festival dates have been set for friday and saturday may 11 and 12 and will be held in the lehigh chapel this year's recital is the twenty-second annual fes tival this recital is perhaps the best known musical conclave of its kind in the country and draws many thousands of visi tors from all parts of the coun try to bethlehem dr fred wolle will again di rect the singers dr wolle has announced that the orches tra has not been decided upon the 1928 recital will be di vided into four sessions there will be one on friday afternoon and one on friday evening the last two will be held on sat urday afternoon last friday evening the uni versity women's club tendered a very enjoyable reception to the members a of the faculty drown hall where the recep tion was held was tastefully decorated with lighted christ mas trees large red candles and garlands of laurels danc ing and cards formed the en tertainment and dave fluhar ty's orchestra furnished the music for the occasion the af fair was very successful and everyone who attended had an enjoyable time the receiving committee which had charge of the affair consisted of mrs carothers who is the president of the or ganization mrs richards mrs ullman mrs hibshman mrs jensen and the wives of about fifteen of the new members of the faculty there will be an important meeting of the brown and white board monday at 4 o'clock in drown hall notice the sophomore tea dance in drown hall is the only event on the university social card for tomorrow and if a good orches tra and the attendance of ce dar crest and bishopthorpe girls are any criterion it will prove to be a thoroughly enjoy able affair dave fluharty's popular or chestra is scheduled to start the syncopation at 4 o'clock and the dancing will continue until 7 o'clock preparations for this the first tea dance of the year to be given by the class of 1930 have been very thor ough and this dance is expected to excel in all respects the very successful ones that were spon sored last year by that class at the sophomore smoker last thursday evening the an nouncement of the dance was received with acclaim by the 200 men present and because of the interval since the last college dance this social oppor tunity should be enthusiastically received by the entire univer sity freshmen are especially urged to be present not only in order that they may spend a most enjoyable afternoon but also so that they may become better acquainted with their classmates and the upper class men the usual 1.00 tax both for stags and for couples will be charged the tickets for the first fall production of the mustard and cheese club which will be held at 8 o'clock friday december 16 in drown hall will be plac ed on sale the beginning of next week these tickets will be sold for one dollar and can be obtained from any member of the mustard and cheese club not only is the idea of hav ing a fall production a new step for the dramatic club but the type of the presentation will also be new the four one-act plays which will be offered marks the first time for many years that anything besides a musical comedy has been pro duced the exceptional char acter of the four plays however and the work which is being done by the club members in their whole-hearted support of the student body as well as the more active backing of those who take part in the meets is essential to the conclusion of a year such as pete promises wrestling try-outs for the inter-class meet to be held sat urday afternoon december 17 in the lower gymnasium will start next monday the try outs will be a means of select ing a member of each class to compete in the meet the seniors with captain heilman and eddie mcgov ern both l men from last year stand the best chance to win the juniors however have plenty of good material be sides andy lehr another let ter man the sophomores are shaping up well under their captain tom jones and should cause the juniors and seniors no little worry coach sheridan who is coaching the freshmen is confronted with a big problem in the lack of ma terial he has issued a call for more 175-pound and heavy weight men so that there will be plenty of competition in the freshman tryouts lehr is act ing junior captain and heil man is captain of the seniors for next week's meet continued on page four the best men of each of the four classes will wrestle in the inter-class meet the winner of first place in each weight divi sion of the finals will receive a gold medal from prof bartlet the next best will receive silver medals and third place winners this evening at 7:30 the sec ond meeting of the students electrical engineering society will be held in the physics lec ture room the speaker at this meeting will be mr a f cor by who will give a talk on the subject of electrical indicating instruments it is to be an il lustrated lecture containing many interesting slides and a moving picture these society meetings come about once a month and their purpose is to bring the students of the department together in order that they may become better acquainted with each other and with the heads of their department eats and smokes are provided during the course of the evening's enter tainment all those who have not as yet joined this society are urged to come to the meet ing this evening give two dol lars and become regular mem bers the freshman electricals are especially urged to turn out for the meeting so that they can become better acquainted with the other students in their de partment everyone is assur ed of a good time the 1928 bach festival dates have been set for friday and saturday may 11 and 12 and will be held in the lehigh chapel this year's recital is the twenty-second annual fes tival this recital is perhaps the best known musical conclave of its kind in the country and draws many thousands of visi tors from all parts of the coun try to bethlehem dr fred wolle will again di rect the singers dr wolle has announced that the orches tra has not been decided upon the 1928 recital will be di vided into four sessions there will be one on friday afternoon and one on friday evening the last two will be held on sat urday afternoon last friday evening the uni versity women's club tendered a very enjoyable reception to the members a of the faculty drown hall where the recep tion was held was tastefully decorated with lighted christ mas trees large red candles and garlands of laurels danc ing and cards formed the en tertainment and dave fluhar ty's orchestra furnished the music for the occasion the af fair was very successful and everyone who attended had an enjoyable time the receiving committee which had charge of the affair consisted of mrs carothers who is the president of the or ganization mrs richards mrs ullman mrs hibshman mrs jensen and the wives of about fifteen of the new members of the faculty there will be an important meeting of the brown and white board monday at 4 o'clock in drown hall notice the sophomore tea dance in drown hall is the only event on the university social card for tomorrow and if a good orches tra and the attendance of ce dar crest and bishopthorpe girls are any criterion it will prove to be a thoroughly enjoy able affair dave fluharty's popular or chestra is scheduled to start the syncopation at 4 o'clock and the dancing will continue until 7 o'clock preparations for this the first tea dance of the year to be given by the class of 1930 have been very thor ough and this dance is expected to excel in all respects the very successful ones that were spon sored last year by that class at the sophomore smoker last thursday evening the an nouncement of the dance was received with acclaim by the 200 men present and because of the interval since the last college dance this social oppor tunity should be enthusiastically received by the entire univer sity freshmen are especially urged to be present not only in order that they may spend a most enjoyable afternoon but also so that they may become better acquainted with their classmates and the upper class men the usual 1.00 tax both for stags and for couples will be charged the tickets for the first fall production of the mustard and cheese club which will be held at 8 o'clock friday december 16 in drown hall will be plac ed on sale the beginning of next week these tickets will be sold for one dollar and can be obtained from any member of the mustard and cheese club not only is the idea of hav ing a fall production a new step for the dramatic club but the type of the presentation will also be new the four one-act plays which will be offered marks the first time for many years that anything besides a musical comedy has been pro duced the exceptional char acter of the four plays however and the work which is being done by the club members in their
