showing on december 16th defeat medical school team by 45-21 in first game of season to attend national student federation this month in nebraska many speakers discuss plans military prof has been in the service twenty seven years has many athletic jour nalistic and scholastic honors use two teams here five years good student the initiation of the fourteen new members into ttaru r beta pi was concluded last thursday by a formal banquet held at the hotel bethlehem this took place after the formal initiation in the chapter rooms in drown hall earlier in the evening continued on page four the first speaker pres rich ards discussed a pamphlet of benjamin franklin's recently reprinted which makes a plea for the education of the youth of his time although short the tract discussed the various subjects which should be taught and particularly the aims of the educational policy pursued ; that students should be taught good breeding in learning as well as in social conduct in those times the range of sub jects was quite restricted for the sciences were only in their infancy and engineering was still very largely empirical a thorough knowledge of the classics including latin and greek and of mathematics with perhaps a little history was deemed sufficient also curiously enough the ability to swim was considered an indis pensible part of the education of a gentleman the president called attention to the equality of aims of education then and now and showed how the im mense strides in science which have taken place since frank lin's time have changed entirely the education given the techni cal man the ultimate aim however is still to train the exhibition cage game saturday among the delegates to the national students federation association which convenes in its annual session at the univer sity of nebraska lincoln ne braska on december 15 16 and 17 will be two lehigh deputies thomas f burke and james c morrison this was definitely decided monday evening when the arcadia met in session at the request of the arcadia members the lehigh represen tatives will attend the special conferences on the subjects of student government and the honor system both of these topics were chosen from a list of seven for without doubt en lightenment on them will be in teresting to all the local stu dents the faculty will not recog nize any petition for a change of the scheduled christmas hol idays this was assured when the committee appointed for that purpose met with the dean and were refused on account of not petitioning earlier it was moved and seconded that a by-law be added to the arcadia constitution with ref erence to the various commit tees which are elected at the be ginning of the tenure here after regular reports must be submitted at the arcadia meet ings by the committee members a committee composed m w j scarlett chairman h a lenna and g w fearnside was appointed to draw up the proper changes considerable discussion was prevalent upon the topic of the athletic policy at lehigh the arcadia will gladly bring con structive criticisms and sugges tions to the attention of the board of athletic control basketball game between pick ed teams to interpret new rules very novel will be the pres entation of the mustard and cheese club next friday de cember the sixteenth when four one-act plays will be offer ed instead of the musical com edies which have appeared for the past several seasons in the spring of the year although the club will again present a musical comedy this year it is inaugurating a system of ex tending its operations to more than one production a year the club has offered many different types for presentation since it was founded by richard hard ing davis in 1894 light com edies dramas vaudeville shows and several other varieties have appeared during the existence of the club the shows of the past few years have been of an exceptional character however and were adjudged among the best in the college world the four plays which have been chosen are all well known and are very enjoyable the cast for each play has been working very assiduously for several weeks in order that everything will be in the best of shape for the night of fri day december 16 the show will probably be held in drown hall the plays selected were in 1999 the boor q and the trysting place all by eminent playwriters prof pfander of the english depart ment is coaching the members and is very/well adapted to this type of work having been en gaged in it for many years he has studied all the plays in de tail in order that the best in terpretation of them may be offered the fact that he has already coached a showing of the boor is also a helping factor experts fence here tomorrow math department to give prizes the various classes in the psychology department num bering about 200 students at tended a psychiatric clinic tues day wednesday and thursday of last week at the state home opathic hospital at rittersville as guests of the hospital auth orities they were afforded the opportunity of observing 13 clinical cases representing dif ferent types of mental disorder they also inspected the institu tion which cares for 1325 pa tients the cases brought before the students included senile psycho sis manic-depressive epilepsy ensephalitic arterioscler osi s paresis alcoholic psychosis mental deficiency and various forms of dementia orecox heb raphrenio catatonic and par anoid the case of senile psychosis was that of an elderly woman who had completely lost her memory with a relapse into pure childishness there were two cases of the manic-depres sive the first the simple manic was a bundle of energy happy exhilarated restless not once was he motionless or silent and his thoughts like his motions were forever shift ing and changing the manic depressive type was the other extreme he was gloomy se pulcharal almost lifeless he could not see a ray of bright ness but everything was dark and hopeless to him continued on page four then there were cases of the epileptic and the ensephalitic the former readily excitable and subject to fits the latter ex tremely nervous the next two cases were examples of arterio sclerosis and paresis respect ively the arterio sclerotic pa tient was paralyzed on the one side of his body he was in capable of speaking but strangely enough he could sing he would strive to speak until his face became purple but all that resulted was a grunt the case of paresis brought on by syphilis had the appearance of grassone and preichard will give exhibition in drown hau prizes for correct solution of problems published in the brown and white sophomores hold initial smoker plan tea dance in drown hall saturday afternoon — 200 present in a rather slow game the basketball team opened its sea son on saturday by defeating the hahnemann medical col lege 45-21 the score does not in any way indicate the super iority of the lehigh team as until tha final quarter the hah nemann team could do practi cally nothing with the score 38-9 and about fifteen minutes remaining ooach geary took out the entire first team and before the new players could get going hahnemann had run up a number of baskets altho they could not come close to the score lehigh had run up the hahnemann team was woefully weak so that no very good idea can be had of the fu ture strength of the brown and white the passing of the team was very fast and accur ate but the shooting was rath er weak this saturday the team goes to new york to meet c c n v in what should be a very interesting game as c c n v has a very strong team after this game there is only one game remaining be fore the christmas holidays a game here with the crescent a c of brooklyn who played a good game here last year be ing defeated only in the last few moments by a three-point margin hesse led both teams in scor ing with eleven points five field and one foul goal follow ed closely by many with five and schultz with four manuszuk brooks lehigh university calender last wednesday john jack i kirkpatrick 29 of wood haven n v was elected cap tain of next year's football team by the letter men of this year's squad the results of this elec tion were received with pleas ure on the campus for kirk patrick is not only a good foot ball player but he also is an ex cellent scholar he possesses a pleasing personality and should make an inspiring captain jack began his football career in brooklyn boys high school where he played two years at the tackle position and captained the team in his sen ior year in his freshman year at lehigh he made the frosh team and in his sophomore year he made the varsity be ing understudy to captain bill littell this year he was the regular first-string tackle be sides his football activities he plays lacrosse in the spring he was captain of the freshman lacrosse team which won the in tra-mural competition last year he was a member of the varsity lacrosse team in ad dition to this jack is a mem ber of the editorial staff of the brown and white and occu pies the same position on the epitome he was a mem ber of the phi club in his sophomore year and this year he was elected to the honorary junior society the cyanide club he was a member of the sophomore y m c a cab inet and he is secretary of the junior class as proof of his scholastic ability he won fresh man and sophomore honors was elected to alpha kappa psi the honorary fraternity for men in the college f business administration is a member of the club de quinze honor ary french society and was the wilbur scholar last year to win the latter he had the high est average of all the sopho mores in the university the prospects for next year's season are very bright very few men will be lost by grad uation this year and there will be a wealth of material avail able from the present undefeat ed frosh team many applica tions have been received by the board of control of athletics for the coaching position next year but as yet no definite ac tion has been taken the sche dule for next year has already been ratified and includes sev eral new-comers on the list announcement of the promo tion of e e mccammon pro fessor of military science and tactics to the rank of lieu tenant colonel of infantry was made recently by the war de partment the privileges and requirements of the new rank became effective november fif teenth after almost twenty-sev en years in the service coming of military stock on both his paternal and maternal sides lt col mccammon's love for the service seems to be in the blood while it has been the tradition of his fam ily that as long as there has been a united states army it has carried upon its roster the name of william wallace e mccammon that honor being the particular heritage of the first son of each generation his own entrance into the army in 1901 three years after he at tempted to volunteer for the cpanish american war through which his father and elder bro ther served came only after he had attained his twenty-first birthday he then eagerly sub stituted the life of an enlisted man for that of a milling en gineer for which he was pre paring at the university of minnesota at the time of his enlistment before lt col mccammon's father who served through the civil war western campaigns and the spanish american war retiring as a major there was his paternal grandfather also a major to set the pace for le high's military professor this grandfather was killed in the civil war lt col mccam mon's maternal grandparents also came of military families so that the fact that he and his two brothers the elder a full ranking colonel bearing the name of william wallace e are officers in the army is not surprising lt col mccammon's first commission was awarded in 1903 while he was on duty in the philippine islands seven years later just as he began his sec ond tour on the island of min danao and after returning from alaska he was advanced to a first lieutenancy in 1916 while on the texas border he continued on page three an innovation will be intro duced at lehigh next term by the mathematical department when it will offer prizes for a series of problems which will be given out the plan as out lined by prof fort head of the department is to have one problem a week for the correct answer to which a prize of five dollars will be given in the event of there being several correct solutions the first cor rect answer will receive the prize ten problems in all will be given out one each week for ten weeks the problems will be publish ed each week in the brown and white and the previous week's winner and the next problem will be published the following week some of the problems will be for particular classes in mathematics although most of them will be for the entire un iversity an interpretative basket ball game will be staged next saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the upper gym between two picked freshman teams this game which will be held under the auspices of the lehigh val ley section of the national board of approved basketball officials is for the purpose of demonstrating the new rules which go into effect this year r g geary lehigh coach acting in his capacity as presi dent of the local board has in vited all the scholastic teams in the valley to have representa tives present in order to get a full understanding of the rules and a large attendance is ex pected last saturday a similar game was played at the uni versity of pennsylvania palea tra at which officials from all over the state were present to get the correct interpretations of the rules these officials have scattered to their various home regions where they will reinterpret the rules in similar demonstration games through out the state — in this manner players all through the state are advised concerning all the rules and get first-hand infor mation about the innovations frank mcguire from continued on page four the first sophomore smoker of the year was held in drown hall last thursday night when over two hundred of the second year men gathered together one of the novelties of the smoker was the fact that music was furnished intermittently thru out the evening dave fluhar ty's orchestra providing the syncopation fred trafford delivered a few well chosen words to the sophomores to open the smok er the matter of dues was then brought up and an urgent request was made that all ond year men pay their assess ments at once as this is their chief means of raising money for the banquet etc an an nouncement was then made that the sophomores would hold a tea dance in drown hall next saturday afternoon december tenth from four until six-thir ty with dave fluharty's or chestra playing dcx bullard led everyone in a few songs and the smoker was concluded by singing the alma mater the customary cider and doughnuts as well as smokes were served musical clubs there will be a special re hearsal of the symphony or chestra on tuesday evening at 8 o'clock in drown hall instead of the regular wed nesday night meeting this week it is absolutely necessary that every member be pres ent if he wishes to make the proposed trip to montclair n j and new york city during the middle of jan uary there is an especially ur gent need for cello players and anyone who can play this instrument is earnestly re upper classes who have satisfactorily com pleted or who are now taking a course in public speaking are eligible and should at once inform prof luch of their intention to enter this contest this comes as a special invitation to all who took public speaking last year whether contestants then or not fencing experts from amer ica and belgium will give an exhibition tomorrow at 8 p.m in drown hall these experts rene preichard professional champion of belgium and r g grassone fencing coach at yale have been giving exhibi tions at many american col leges grassone and preichard will engage in three duels each of them lasting about 15 minutes in the first bout the contest ants will use sabers as weapons ; foils in the second ; and french display swords in the third grassone and preichard are two of the world's most eminent fencing stars the former is one of the authorities on amer ican fencing and is now pres ident of the american fencing society preichard gained fame in belgium where he became champion duelling master of belgium at present he is coach of the new york fencing club the men will come to lehigh as part of a long tour emanating from new york the affair tomorrow evening which will bring together the two popular champions is in charge of the fencing club of lehigh university as the scheduled exhibition is between two of the most expert swords men in america it should purpose of demonstrating the new rules which go into effect this year r g geary lehigh coach acting in his capacity as presi dent of the local board has in vited all the scholastic teams in the valley to have representa tives present in order to get a full understanding of the rules and a large attendance is ex pected last saturday a similar game was played at the uni versity of pennsylvania palea tra at which officials from all over the state were present to get the correct interpretations of the rules these officials have scattered to their various home regions where they will reinterpret the rules in similar demonstration games through out the state — in this manner players all through the state are advised concerning all the rules and get first-hand infor mation about the innovations frank mcguire from continued on page four the first sophomore smoker of the year was held in drown hall last thursday night when over two hundred of the second year men gathered together one of the novelties of the smoker was the fact that music was furnished intermittently thru out the evening dave fluhar ty's orchestra providing the syncopation fred trafford delivered a few well chosen words to the sophomores to open the smok er the matter of dues was then brought up and an urgent request was made that all ond year men pay their assess ments at once as this is their chief means of raising money for the banquet etc an an nouncement was then made that the sophomores would hold a tea dance in drown hall next saturday afternoon december tenth from four until six-thir ty with dave fluharty's or chestra playing dcx bullard led everyone in a few songs and the smoker was concluded by singing the alma mater the customary cider and doughnuts as well as smokes were served musical clubs there will be a special re hearsal of the symphony or chestra on tuesday evening at 8 o'clock in drown hall instead of the regular wed nesday night meeting this week it is absolutely necessary that every member be pres ent if he wishes to make the proposed trip to montclair n j and new york city during the middle of jan uary there is an especially ur gent need for cello players and anyone thursday night at 6:15 p m all members are requested to be present orators called the alumni public speak ing contest held annually in connection with washing ton's birthday february 22 will this year again be held on that date all members of the three upper classes who have satisfactorily com pleted or who are now taking a course in public speaking are eligible and should at once inform prof luch of their intention to enter this contest this comes as a special invitation to all who took public speaking last year whether contestants then or not fencing experts from amer ica and belgium will give an exhibition tomorrow at 8 p.m in drown hall these experts rene preichard professional champion of belgium and r g grassone fencing coach at yale have been giving exhibi tions at many american col leges grassone and preichard will engage in three duels each of them lasting about 15 minutes in the first bout the contest ants will use sabers as weapons ; foils in the second ; and french display swords in the third grassone and preichard are two of the world's most eminent fencing stars the former is one of the authorities on amer ican fencing and is now pres ident of the american fencing society preichard gained fame in belgium where he became champion duelling master of belgium at present he is coach of the new york fencing club the men will come to lehigh as part of a long tour emanating from new york the affair tomorrow evening which will bring together the two popular champions is in charge of the fencing club of lehigh university as the scheduled exhibition is
