many candidates including three letter men are practicing daily brown and white scores 1-0 victory in close game on steel field five undergraduates dis cuss factors influencing study at meeting board of control announces wendell will not be candidate four lehigh players select ed from men who ap peared on field notice there will be an important meeting of the brown and white board tuesday at four o'clock for the purpose of electing new men to the staff very urgent for every mem ber to be present reasons given basketball season opens tomorrow award letters hahnemann medical col lege to oppose varsity in first game in response to the call issued for candidates for varsity wrestling a large number of men turned out and are work ing hard daily under the super vision of coach sheridan only three letter men from last year form the nucleus of the squad namely captain heilman andy lehr and eddie mcgov ern but tubby miller is eligible to wrestle and along with many promising candidates a very successful season is anticipated in the 115 pound class the competition should be very keen with mcgovern defending his laurels against writer and tift harry palm stands out as a very promising candidate for the 125 pound class in the 135 pound class jones of last year's frosh team is a candidate and possibly captain heilman may wrestle in this weight although indications point towards his wrestling in the 145 pound continued on page six the cyanide club junior honorary society has duly in augurated five more new mem bers this has been done in accordance with the wishes of the arcadia who believed that the former quota of fifteen men was insufficient to carry on the new extensive program of the society the new members are john a lyter editor-in-chief of the epitome wright martin dale assistant manager of football oscor m reutelhuber member of mustard and cheese edwin h gott cheerleader and aaron e hess member of the tennis squad these men represent a good number of ac tivities the society contains representatives of practically every field of endeavor in the university continued on page six the new hats which will ap pear the latter part of next week have met with the appro bation of frank clayton presi dramatic club in fall production frosh swimmers begin practice mustard and cheese to pre sent four one-act comedies attractive schedule has been arranged for this year's team distinctly novel was the meeting of the faculty educa tional club held last monday in the chemistry building five student speakers drawn from two classes and representing different types of undergradu ates discussed the question the present student attitude and the problems that arise therefrom the speakers were w b billmeyer jr 28 pres ident of the senior class paul gilmore 28 editor-in-chief of the brown and white john ly ter 29 editor-in-chief of the epitome w l gibson 28 of leonard hall and r max goepp jr 28 chairman edi torial board of the lehigh re view billmeyer as the first speak er mentioned a plan now be ing discussed by o d k for combining various extra-curri cular fees and subscriptions in to one student activities fee he then described the state of college spirit of lehigh as de plorable ascribed this condition to the present status of the football team and made an urgent plea for whole-hearted effort on the part of the fac ulty as well as the s/tudent body in the development and streng thening not only of the team but also of college spirit itself continued on page five gilmore as the next student to address the meeting dis cussed several factors influenc ing the scholastic work of stu the lafayette gridiron jinx proved retroactive to the brown and white soccer men when they scored a 1-0 victory over the maroon in the game on wednesday afternoon at the steel field in hanging up this triumph the lehigh soccer team rounded out an eight year stretch of consecutive undefeats in their annual clash with the men from down the river although playing a game that did not equal that of their op ponents the brown and white aggregation came up to par at every tight pinch and put their breaks to splendid advantage a long shot by wagner in the opening minutes of play shot neatly through the corner of the goal chalking up the first and decisive tally with the confidence of a lead in their favor the home team went af ter the ball with an enthusiasm that almost netted another goal but as the half closed lehigh has settled back to a let up that stuck with them through the remainder of the game although they were on the point of scor ing on several occasions thru out the second period and the last half lafayette was insis tently hammering at the le high goal but to no material avail the magnificent play of damiani at goal saved the day for lehigh time after time when disaster seemed certain on two occasions he was hemmed in continued on page five pi delta epsilon has convention lithographs pre sented to lehigh tomorrow evening at seven o'clock the basketball team opens its season with the hahn emann medical college as their opponents this is a new team on the brown and white sched ule so that little can be told about the relative strength of the two teams however the lehigh squad has been practic ing hard for the past four weeks and is rapidly developing into a very smoothly working combination which after a few more games should be all set for the hard games to be play ed after christmas among the most important of which are those with the army the navy and princeton since this is the opening game coach geary will un doubtedly try out a number of different combinations to en deavor to find out which works the best so that a large num ber of men will most likely see action during the game how ever the most probable start ing line-up is hesse and many forwards marcus center and billmeyer and berman guards of these billmeyer berman and hesse are veterans of last year's team which won the championship of the middle at lantic states league and should form the nucleus of another championship team blake society holds meeting two seniors and two jun iors are elected into society percy wendell football men tor at lehigh for the past three years will not be a candidate for that position as his contract expired with the conclusion of the lafayette game having failed to avail himself of the op portunity to make the announce ment himself the board of con trol voted to disclose this infor mation after the meeting held monday evening that a radical change in the football coaching policy at le high is inevitable was recogniz ed when a football committee consisting of messrs larkin jacobs and okeson was ap pointed to formulate and draw up a football policy which will be in accordance with the uni versity requirements these res olutions will be presented to the board for ratification at an early meeting nothing definite may be had with reference to the coaching situation however upon the completion of final plans the press will be informed imme diately it was moved and passed that the new coach be employed as a football coach only with a contract of but one season for twelve months upon the request of profes sor carothers tennis coach and the approval of the faculty the tennis schedule was increased to 15 matches with respect to this the by-laws will be changed contingent upon the sanction of coach tate it was voted to recognize the efficient aid of messrs hyde goldman and macneil who rendered valu able assistance to the scrubs and freshman teams respective ly goldman will receive an honorarium of 150 while the other two coaches will be given 100 apiece while candidates for the man ager of the freshman track team were presented the elec tion has been postponed until with the baseball season but several months away discus sion was given to the possibili ties of a coach jing john son at lehigh for the past two years will undoubtedly go south with the philadelphia athletics and hopes to be a member of the squad for the season his communication with regards to the year more of service for which he is contracted was laid on the table continued on page six the selection of an all-tay lor stadium team has been made this year by some un known lehigh football rooter and appeared in the bethlehem globe-times of november 22 since this choice of players is based entirely upon their play ing while on taylor field it is easily possible that a better team could be picked from among the men who have play ed here this fall but neverthe less the line-up proves inter esting and the following is the letter received by the globe times : since the season is at hand to pick all-americans and oth er alls i thought it might be appropriate to choose an all taylor stadium team which is composed of the best players who in my opinion have ap peared on the local gridiron this fall with this purpose in mind i believe that i have chos en two teams of about equal cal ibre although the first team of course includes the outstanding players this selection is ba"s ed entirely upon the play of the individuals in taylor stadium and therefore may not include some players on the various teams who have played better throughout the season the teams include lehigh players of course but the locals are not so well represented as i would like to see them which fact scarcely needs any explanation i have seen all the games ex cept a small part of the st john's game well here are the selections and i may add here that i don't expect any one to agree with mercersburg academy have all been secured for this season's schedule while ones with lafayette freshmen and allentown y m c a are pending among the most promising candidates for the team are cushman lane and jenkins cushman comes from cushing l 1 high school where he has been a member of the team three years in the metropoli tan 100-yard free style cham pionship he finished third cushman is a regular swimmer in both the 50 and 100-yard vents h s jenkins a beth lehem liberty high school pro duct is another fast man in the water specializing in the 50 and 220-yard free style events considerable attention has been given to lane who finished fourth in the pennsylvania in terscholastic diving he gained his experience as a diver at baltimore polytechnic insti tute schellenberger moh n c ss waltman winchester mcneil mayberry and mcdonald com plete the list of promising can didates out for the freshman team mayberry shows hope as a quarter-miler having swam the relay on the of the ohio state group james c morrison advertis ing manager of lehigh burr and secretary of pi delta ep silon here was the lehigh del egate he was entertained at the phi gamma delta house at columbus during the period of convention the fraternity has decided to sponsor a national editorial con test sometime before the end of thi sacademic year this con test will be open to any under graduate who is taking a course in journalism in the country and a considerable prize will be offered for the best editorial turned in in addition to a cash prize national recognition by the literary fraternity will be accorded the writer of the best editorial the purpose of this contest is to stimulate col lege journalism there were approximately sixty delegates to this convention representing continued on page five two weeks from tonight on friday december sixteenth the mustard and cheese dramatic association will present its first fall production hereto fore the club has limited itself to a spring production usually in the form of a musical com edy so great was the success of the comedy offered last year mercy sakes that mustard and cheese adopted the idea of a fall show there will be four one-act comedies presented by the club this year entitled in 1999 by william demille ; the boor by anton tchekoff ; q by steven leacock and the trysting place by booth tar kington the four casts for these productions have already been picked and are holding nightly practices although the time of showing is two weeks off prof pfander of the eng lish department is coaching the casts of the four comedies who are showing marked im provement under his tutelage rehearsals for the four plays are held at different times in order that none of the men will lose time while the others are being drilled all of the pres entations are humorous ' and very well written during the past few years the mustard and cheese club has risen to one of the outstanding dramatic associations among the eastern colleges the quality of this fall production will be of the same standard as the spring productions have been these two portraits of fam ous scientists have been framed and will be hung in the facul ty room of the alumni memor ial building two portraits of famous sci entists in the form of original lithographs autographed with a presentation inscription to le high university by the artist mr albert rosenthal of phila delphia have been presented to lehigh university by the artist one is a portrait of louis pas teur the great french biolo gist and the other a portrait of the great english chemist the rev jos priestley discoverer of oxygen and famous for his researches in the chemistry of various kinds of air mr rosenthal let it be known that he presented these to lehigh because of the fact that the university was having an art exhibition and he is interested in furthering education in the various forms of art mr ros enthal is a painter and is rep resented in several museums as well as private collections and has made a considerable suc cess as an etcher and litho grapher the regular meeting of the robert blake society was held last monday at the home of mrs blake very little busi ness was transacted except that it was decided to have the pic ture of former members of the society framed and hung in the rooms of the psychology de partment in packer hall after the business meeting the faculty members left the room and j j longacre led a discussion on the subject equalized educational oppor tunity after the discussion was well under way the mem bers of the faculty
