ed his theme about the proper union of athletics with schol arship the salient point which he drove home so forcefully is found in his own words a good lehigh athlete is also a good lehigh student he made frequent references to the fact that innumerable promising athletes are each semester drop ped from college due to their inability or indisposition to give proper time to their studies he then called upon the team as a whole to stand up so that the class might see them the more closely and recognize those who had made such a successful rec ord in the name of 31 austy also said that he had been so favorably impressed with the spirit of the class as a whole that he would like to be a mem ber even to the paying of dues following his speech austy was unanimously accepted as an honorary member the assemblage then wit nessed two excellent amateur wrestling matches and boxing bout sergeant-at-arms casey then exhibited his skill in tumbling and ability as a har monica player with the with two goals against the navy in an exciting game on saturday the brown and white played a mag nificent game for the first three quarters placing the ball with in the navy's net in the first quarter 28 president of the senior class paul gil more 28 editor-in-chief of the brown and white john ly ter 29 editor-in-chief of the epitome w l gibson 28 of leonard hall and r max goepp jr 28 chairman edi torial board of the lehigh re view billmeyer as the first speak er mentioned a plan now being discussed by o d k for com bining various extra-curricular fees and subscriptions into one student activities fee he then described the state of college spirit at lehigh as deplorable ascribed this condition to the present status of the football team and made an urgent plea for a whole-hearted effort on the part of the faculty as well as the student body in the de velopment and strengthening not only of the team but also of college spirit itself gilmore as the next student to address the meeting dis cussed several factors influenc ing the scholastic work of stu dents as well as their social life of these sex liquor and inher ent intellectual ability were the points mostly stressed in cummings of the bethlehem steel company was the speaker at the meeting of the mining and geological so ciety held in the geology lec ture room williams hall last wednesday night at present mr cummings is chief geolo gist for the bethlehem steel company / in his talk he told about his trip to northern africa in the riff country which is in the southern part of morrocco he was sent over there by the bethlehem steel company to look at various deposits of iron ore which the company was thinking of buying he said that most of the iron is secur ed on the surface of the ground by open digging that is there are no mines but the ore is mined in a process similar to that in which soft coal is min ed in the western part of penn sylvania he stated that he was impressed very much by the barrenness of the country es pecially in the vicinity of the ore deposits along with his talk mr cummings showed pic tures of the country at the conclusion of his talk refresh ments were served and the meeting was then adjourned the fifty aspirants for posi tions on the freshman basket ball team are fast rounding into shape according to coach bart lett who basing his predictions upon early season indications pects that several experienced courtmen will change from foot ball togs to gym suits in order to give the team the benetit of their experience at the present time practice in the fundamentals and gen eral organization is being em phasized on wednesday thurs day and friday of each week but after the holidays the can didates face the prospect of daily practice the second meeting of the year for the mechanical engin eering society was held in the geology lecture room on thurs day evening november 17th there was a short business session preceding the lecture of the evening in which president thorn called for a discussion of the proposed order for a s m e badges which the society is privileged to wear being a stu dent branch of the american society of mechanical engin eers the consensus seemed to be that the society preferred watch charms to badges and the secretary was requested to place an order accordingly profes dealt with the proceedings which will take place at the sor stuart read a paper which annual convention of the a s m e in new york during the week of december sth professor stuart requested that the society send two dele gates to the convention to take part in the student conference which will be held as a regular part of the convention on de cember eighth the senior mechanicals are planning to at tend the convention on decem ber ninth so that they may view the exhibits of the na tional power show which is held in conjunction with the an nual meeting the business session also in cluded a motion that the me chanical engineering society purchase a page in the 1929 epitome as has been the cus tom in past years following the business ses sion the main event of the eve ning was presented a talk on internal combustion engines by mr w a morrison of the ingersoll rand co of phillips burg n j mr morrison is a graduate of ohio state univer sity and has been for some time in charge of internal combus tion work at the phillipsburg plant of the ingersoll-rand co in his talk mr morrison pointed out the vast strides that have been taken in internal combustion engine practice par ticularly with the diesel en continued on page three on wednesday december 7th yale and m preichard cham m grassone fencing coach of pion fencer of belgium will stage an exhibition in drown hall at bp m m grassone is the president of the fencing club of america he has coach ed the yale fencing team for many years and is considered a final authority in the sport preichard is one of the out standing champions of europe and both men are excellent swordsmen their fencing is very flashing and brilliant the exhibition will include a match with the foils another with the scabre and a third with the duelling sword this match is sponsored by the fencing club of lehigh university at present there are about eighty students at lehigh out for fencing as the scheduled match is between two of the best fencers in america it should prove most interest ing students and the general public are invited to attend last thursday evening no vember 17 a regular meeting of the civil engineering society was held in the lecture room of the physics building the speaker of the evening was professor benjamin l miller who spoke on his trip around the world he told of the trip generally and discussed condi tions in detail in india and japan professor miller first visited morocco and he told of the quaint homes of the natives and of their furnishings he also described a moorish meal while there he collected many fossils and he described the physio graphy of this country making particular reference to the lime stone mountains and the iron mines from here he proceed ed to egypt and he described in detail the drainage of the nile and the irrigation carried on with the water from the nile he next went to palestine then to jerico and then to jerusal em he described the care tak en of the very limited amount of soil found in this region in all his travels the questions most often asked him were how to get to america and when was america going to do away with the prohibition continued on page three anyone who has any snap shots of the campus or any of the desired that every one who has any pictures of anything that has to do with lehigh life will turn them in in order to make the best epitome possible all pictures turned in that are not accepted for publication will be returned the fraternities are also requested to turn in snapshots of various features or groups of fellows of the re spective houses it is the plan of the board to run pictures of this type along with the other views in the fraternity section of the year book in order to make that part of the epitome more interesting the basketball squad has been practicing daily for the past two weeks in preparation for its opening game which comes on saturday december 3 at 7 p m with the hahne mann medical school as the op ponents the schedule this year is considerably different from that of last season last year the most difficult games came in the very early part of the sea son all away from home while this year the early season games are with teams which while good are not of the men seem to be progressing favorably bart would like to have more candi dates report especially those who have previously played the jump-off position now that the football season is over he ex pects that several experienced courtmen will change from foot ball togs to gym suits in order to give the team the benetit of their experience at the present time practice in the fundamentals and gen eral organization is being em phasized on wednesday thurs day and friday of each week but after the holidays the can didates face the prospect of daily practice the second meeting of the year for the mechanical engin eering society was held in the geology lecture room on thurs day evening november 17th there was a short business session preceding the lecture of the evening in which president thorn called for a discussion of the proposed order for a s m e badges which the society is privileged to wear being a stu dent branch of the american society of mechanical engin eers the consensus seemed to be that the society preferred watch charms to badges and the secretary was requested to place an order accordingly profes dealt with the proceedings which will take place at the sor stuart read a paper which annual convention of the a s m e in new york during the week of december sth professor stuart requested that the society send two dele gates to the convention to take part in the student conference which will be held as a regular part of the convention on de cember eighth the senior mechanicals are planning to at tend the convention on decem ber ninth so that they may view the exhibits of the na tional power show which is held in conjunction with the an nual meeting the business session also in cluded a motion that the me chanical engineering society purchase a page in the 1929 epitome as has been the cus tom in past years following the business ses sion the main event of the eve ning was presented a talk on internal combustion engines by mr w a morrison of the ingersoll rand co of phillips burg n j mr morrison is a graduate of ohio state univer sity and has been for some time in charge of internal combus tion work at the phillipsburg plant of the ingersoll-rand co in his talk mr morrison pointed out the vast strides that have been taken in internal combustion engine practice par ticularly with the diesel en continued on page three on wednesday december 7th yale and m preichard cham m grassone fencing coach of pion fencer of belgium will stage an exhibition in drown hall at bp m m grassone is the president of the fencing club of america he has coach ed the yale fencing team for many years and is considered a final authority in the sport preichard is one of the out standing champions of europe and both men are excellent swordsmen their fencing is very flashing and brilliant the exhibition will include a match with the foils another with the scabre and a third with the duelling sword this match is sponsored by the fencing club of lehigh university at present there are about eighty students at lehigh out for fencing as the scheduled match is between two of the best fencers in america it should prove most interest ing students and the general public are invited to attend last thursday evening no vember 17 a regular meeting of the civil engineering society was held in the lecture room of the physics building the speaker of the evening was professor benjamin l miller who spoke on his trip around the world he told of the trip generally and discussed condi tions in detail in india and japan professor miller first visited morocco and he told of the quaint homes of the natives and of their furnishings he also described a moorish meal while there he collected many fossils and he described the physio graphy of this country making particular reference to the lime stone mountains and the iron mines from here he proceed ed to egypt and he described in detail the drainage of the nile and the irrigation carried on with the water from the nile he next went to palestine then to jerico and then to jerusal em he described the care tak en of the very limited amount of soil found in this region in all his travels the questions most often asked him were how to get to america and when was america going to do away with the prohibition continued on page three anyone who has any snap shots of the campus or any of the college games or class acti vities that are of general in terest is requested to turn them in to t chandler at the chi phi house as soon as possible for the 1929 epitome all pic tures that are submitted for publication and are accepted for publication will be paid for there will be an entire new section in the epitome this year containing pictures of col lege life and activities it is desired that every one who has any pictures of anything that has to do with lehigh life will turn them in in order to make the best epitome possible all pictures turned in that are not accepted for publication will be returned the fraternities are also requested to turn in snapshots of various features or groups of fellows of the re spective houses it is the plan of the board to run pictures of this type along with the other views in the fraternity section of the year book in order to make that part of the epitome more interesting the basketball squad has been practicing daily for the past two weeks in preparation for its opening game which comes on saturday december 3 at 7 p m with the hahne mann medical school as the op ponents the schedule this year is considerably different from that of last season last year the most difficult games came in the very early part of the sea son all away from home while this year the early season games are with teams which while good are not of the same calibre as princeton the army the navy and such other teams as are met later in the season the second game comes on the following saturday with c c n v at new york last week c c n y defeated
