there will be a pep meet ing at the gymnasium at 7 45 a m on saturday for the purpose of giving the foot ball team a rousing send-off to rutgers every one be present to make this meeting a real one football banquet given for team victory expected team strong college officials alumni and townspeople dem onstrate interest team enthused at the arcadia meeting on wednesday evening many is sues affecting every member of the student body were decided it was perhaps the most ac tive session of the student gov erning body held this year if such activity is continued the organization will have its forces felt in every phase of stu dent life the lehigh union has real ized very little support from the students this year it is obvious that it cannot continue to function without financial aid and the benefits that le high derives from the union must not be dispensed with the red cross which invaded the campus today also deserves the support of every lehigh man the arcadia sanctions these two organizations and urges everyone to subscribe to them the cyanide club was grant ed its request to adopt a hat as their insignia on the condition that the membership be not less than twenty members and that continued on page two a disgusting act of vandalism which has aroused the students and authorities of lafayette college was perpetrated early tuesday morning on the col lege campus the beautiful statue of the marquis de la fayette presented to the college several years ago by morris clothier of philadelphia was found bedecked with paint of brown and white lehigh's col ors j it was discovered shortly be fore 7 o'clock tuesday morning and it is believed to have been done between 5 and 7 o'clock the lafayette authorities are at a loss for a reason for an act of this kind and are determined to run down the persons guilty of the depredation it is most distressing said dr william mather lewis president of lafayette college why anyone should want to disfigure so beautiful a statue is beyond my comprehension the entire figure which stands on a base of concrete in front of the colton memorial continued on page four candidates report for basketball frosh to honor team at smoker prospects are bright with three lettermen on squad freshman football team to be honored next monday night on saturday lehigh's fresh man football team will play la fayette's frosh at lafayette stadium the game will start at twelve-thirty so that it will be through in time for the la fayette-susquehanna game all the fight that both teams have will be put into this tussle it is a preliminary to the mighty struggle of next satur day when the varsity plays lafayette and the frosh team will fight hard to win lafayette's squad seems to be on about equal footing with the brown and white both have played rutgers and both beat en rutgers by a 6-0 score both have played muhlenberg frosh lehigh beating them 19-13 and lafayette inning by 14-12 so there is not much to choose be tween as far as past perfor mances are concerned lafay ette also has played villanova and fordham and was beaten by both of them but these two schools have exceptionally good frosh teams and this outcome was expected the freshman gridders seem to be in better shape than for any previous game of the sea son the men all have a good mental attitude the will to win and can be expected to do their best the squad will be mater ially aided by the return to the lineup of pinkney half-back kehler tackle and williams tackle who have not seen ac tion since the muhlenberg game lattig another half-back will also be ready the support of the entire freshman class should be be continued on page three military society has initiation once again the biggest event of the year for lehigh students and alumni takes place the lafayette game this year proves to be one of the greatest in the past decade inasmuch as it ap pears that the possibilities of a victory for lehigh are much greater than they have been for a matter of eight years with this brilliant athletic event is always associated a so cial event of as great impor tance in its own field the brown maroon ball for many years this social function has follow ed the big game usually the ball has been held in the town where the teams played and this year it will be at the ho tel bethlehem the many alum ni of the university who are in bethlehem for the game will un doubtedly be present at the ball this provides a social oppor tunity for the undegraduates to mingle on the same level with the much admired men who have been through the mill in order to make the function a real part of the big occasion complimentary tickets will be given to the men who represent lehigh on the gridiron in the afternoon the eventuality of lehigh winning the game makes the possibilities for the ball much greater and it is expected that this will be the best ever arrangements are at present well under way and although nothing definite can be learned at the present time about the arrangements it has been rum ored that ted weems and his famous cafe l'aiglon orchestra has been engaged ted is known at lehigh as having played at the sophomore cotillion of 1924 his orchestra is one of the best in the east and has won fame for clever novelties continued on page four auto routes to rutgers given special service is held for lieutenant colonel c r deems jr bethlehem motor club gives detailed informa tion on best roads the brown and white grid team expects to leave new brunswick tomorrow evening with another victory in its pos session the rutgers game is always one which arouses a great deal of interest and spir it in both colleges and satur day's game promises to be an exceptionally good one since both teams are evenly matched rutgers is determined to av enge the defeats of the past sea sons and lehigh is equally de termined to bring home the vic tory rutgers displayed a very effective aerial attack against alfred last saturday in this game they completed seventeen forwards and nine lateral passes both teams have been going through a period of intensive training and both have had hard scrimmages against the subs on tuesday and wednes day percy wendell gave the team some new plays and the appearance which the brown and white squad made was very good the team is in excellent shape with only a few excep tions and every man that goes in the game against rutgers should give a very good account of himself charley eastman has a strong reserve line on hand and no trouble is expected from this point davidowitz and mulaney will probably be lost for the game because of their injuries dav idowitz might be selected to kick off in case lehigh chooses to do so but it is certain that if he does kick the ball on the opening whistle he will be re moved from the game imme diately as any injury to his hand would mean that he would be unable to play in the la fayette game on the following saturday continued on page four after the game the fraterni ties at rutgers are giving a number of house dances and from all reports they expect a number of lehigh men down for the game and stay for the dances literary magazine holds election primed to face many of the leading harriers of the east when the middle atlantic col legiate association holds its tenth annual varsity cross country run saturday the le high team leaves for new york friday the meet will be stag ed on the famous van cortland course in new york city and will begin at 1 p m the course measures six miles en trees this year are from the same colleges which started men last season these include al fred union new york univer sity rutgers manhattan la fayette and lehigh the meet will undoubtedly be one of the most important cross-country events of the year and the out come is awaited with interest in all collegiate circles coach morris e kanaly is taking to new york a team which captured third place last year the hopes are that they will carry the brown and white across the line ahead of the field this year it is for this purpose that the hill and dal ers have been training con scientiously all season the training this week has consist ed of a turn about the five-mile course on monday followed by light track work on tuesday wednesday the team jogged around the campus and thurs day was declared a day of rest friday the runners will leave for the hotel pennsylvania which will be their temporary headquarters the 1927 meet promises to be particularly hard fought two colleges in particular union and alfred are considered the two most likely to give coach kanaly's charges the most com petition alfred it will be re membered carried away the honors last year and the year before as well since it has only been in the last two meets that this little new york state college has participated their victories speak particularly well for the cross-country ability of its students the alfred team has again been meeting with success and no doubt will cause the brown and white marath continued on page three lafayette tickets sell very slowly lehigh review selects new members for editorial and business boards still a large number of good seats available for game a number of the prominent local alumni and friends of the university met with the foot ball squad and coaches on mon day evening at a training table dinner in the university room at the hotel bethlehem the object of the meeting was to start the two weeks drive for the lafayette game by a demon stration to the team of the ac tive interest taken in them by college administration alumni and towns-people the talks made clear that the poor rec ord this year had in no wise shaken the confidence of the supporters of the team it was indicated however that there was a feeling that the team had not as yet realized to the full its possibilities as long as the team does itself justice no more can be asked for but if it fails to do that then both the team and its supporters have every right to feel ashamed this was one of the points stressed and no attempt was made to urge the team to ac complish impossible things that victory over rutgers and lafayette this year are quite within the realm of possibility was however made most clear mr e g grace lehigh 99 president of the bethlehem steel corporation presided and called upon the following prom inent men for informal talks dr c r richards president of the university mr archi bald johnston lehigh 89 one of bethlehem's most prominent citizens mr r a lewis su perintendent of the bethlehem steel company plant who has two sons in lehigh mr v j pat pazzetti lehigh 15 su perintendent of the open hearth at the saucon plant who is assisting in the coach ing of the team mr w r okeson okey lehigh 95 alumni secretary and profes sor h r bosey reiter head of the department of physical education the talks were all pep talks and each man made the fact clear that everyone is be hind the team and confident that they will play the last two games and play them to win the dinner was a huge success 1 and everyone was en thused with the attitude of both the team and its support ers notice freshman class dues will be collected after monday night a ten cent fine for every month they are not paid after january first will be charged at a meeting of the staff of the lehigh review on tuesday afternoon in drown hall r max goepp 28 was elected chairman of the board of edi tors thomas brennan 29 clifton johnston 28 and thomas gunthorpe 30 were elected to the editorial staff for the interest they have shown in the publication the next number of the mag azine will be out ten days be fore the christmas holidays many interesting articles are being prepared and much work is being done to make this hol iday number a complete suc cess in the competition for posi tions on the business staff three juniors joseph conrath fred jester and james engle scor ed first second and third highest number of points re spectively these men have all been elected to the board sub ject to the approval of the fac ulty board of publications which will meet next wednes day seniors class ballots and assess ments must be turned in to the class book committee as soon as possible hand yours to the most convenient mem ber of the committee now ! when lehigh journeys to new brunswick on saturday there will be many students who will be anxious to accom pany the team as spectators of the game which will be staged there against rutgers in view of this fact it seems to be a most opportune time to print the route that is without doubt the best one to use on this trip there is a route other than the one which appears below thru easton kiltnersville french town flemington and new brunswick this road is how ever a good deal longer and not in such good condition the route through easton phillips burg somerville bound brook to new brunswick is a concrete road all the way and is a much traveled state highway the de tailed information given below was secured through the cour tesy of the bethlehem motor club 0.0 bethlehem main and broad streets through o*s four corners left with trolley 1.1 irregular four corners right with trolley 3.7 butztown through 10.3 fork left with trolley on walnut street 10.8 five corners right on northampton street 11.1 easton at centre square through with trolley on northampton street continued on page four next monday night the class of 31 is going to inaugurate the year's activities with a smoker to be held in drown hall at 7:45 p m this smok er is to be given in honor of the freshman football team which has had a very success ful season and promises to fin ish the schedule undefeated included in the evening's en tertainment will be refresh ments consisting of doughnuts and cider that is guaranteed to make everyone come back for more there will be plenty for every frosh present if not too much in the way of entertainment some excellent boxing and wrestling matches are offered that will insure an abundance of thrills and entertainment another feature that will inter est everyone is a good dance orchestra to furnish added pep to the gathering this orches tra will play at intervals thru out the evening and will be a feature of the smoker the only requirement is that the fel lows bring their own smokes so every person will have his his own particular brand although the main purpose of the smoker is to show some appreciation for the efforts of the football team the secondary purpose is to bring the fresh man class closer together and develop a spirit of class cooper ation therefore it is doubly the duty of every man to get there whether he is sick lame or well first to support his team and second to make a bet ter class the idea of this af fair is unique in the annals of lehigh as it will be the first occasion of this nature when any one class has met to honor its representatives in the fields of sport it is highly commen dable that the frosh class is showing this evidence of unity and pride the money for the financing of this smoker was loaned to the treasurer through the kind ness of the lehigh union until sufficient funds from the class dues are raised these dues are going to be collected some time before january first on last monday evening scab bard and blade held a special initiation service for lieutenant colonel c r deems jr at tached to headquarters field artillery third corps area lieutenant colonel deems is well-known and very popular in military circles his active in terest in scabbard and blade has long been appreciated and to show this appreciation the society offered him an honor ary membership on monday afternoon the lieutenant colonel watched the unit drill and he seemed sur prised and pleased with the showing made in spite of the cold weather which hampered the men in handling their rifles the armory and the facilities for instruction and training af forded by it also elicited favor able comment he liked the spirit shown by tb«e unit as a whole and the way in which the men regarded their work he thought worthy of praise lieutenant colonel deems has in his long and varied career seen much active service in 1905 he served in the filippines with major mccammon during the uprisings there he took an active part in quelling the disturbances on the mexican border in 1914 and he served in the world war it is hoped that he will visit the university frequently and that he will have an opportun ity to give the student body a talk on the part played by field artillery in war and on some of the sidelights of the various military operations in which he has participated a little less than 75 men re sponded to coach geary's first call for basketball candidates last tuesday afternoon in the taylor gymnasium the ability of the lehigh mentor to pro duce winning teams is well known to all the followers of this sport in the city in addi tion to coaching the lehigh team last year he also turned out good teams in 1917 and 1918 all three of these teams met with the greatest success and there is little doubt but that he will live up to all expec tations during the coming sea son the prospects for this year's team are bright as three oustanding lettermen of last year's quintet have returned and there is a wealth of soph omore material the three var sity men referred to are cap tain billmeyer who was captain of the freshman team his first year and whose work at guard has been outstanding during his two years on the varsity berman another guard of no mean ability and hesse an al ternate forward and center the foremost men of last year's freshman team are marcus schultz and many who was the captain however due to the fact that so many candidates have reported no one can be certain of a position on the team as the competition will be keen the first day's practice was confined mainly to a 15-minute scrimmage for the purpose of testing out the shooting and passing ability of the men in this scrimmage the regulars were matched against a team chosen from among the remain der of the candidates and many substitutions were made in both teams the schedule this year is a hard one having on it many of the leading teams of the east about 20 men have reported for assistant manager practice will be held every afternoon un til the thanksgiving holidays at which time it will be suspended until the following week when it will be resumed in order to put the final touches on for the first game of the season which will be played on december 3rd in spite of the fact that the lehigh team has a better chance this year than for sev eral years past to defeat the maroon eleven the tickets to the game have not been going so well this year as usual it seems strange that support of the sixty-first annual gridiron classic should be less than that of previous years it is pos sible that the applications have hardly started to come in but this is rather a hazardous guess with tickets not going so well it is very probable that it will be possible to secure a few at the last minute before the game but even this is rather doubtful the lehigh-lafayette game has become such a clas sic in football history that we have no doubt that there will be the usual crowd in atten dance students wishing to get their coupons exchanged for reserv ed seats must get them in this week to jack petrikin's office brown white bethlehem pa friday november 11 1927 arcadia has busy special meeting statue painting arouses students frosh gridmen to meet lafayette brown-maroonball big social event vol xxxv no 14 spite of the cold weather which hampered the men in handling their rifles the armory and the facilities for instruction and training af forded by it also elicited favor able comment he liked the spirit shown by tb«e unit as a whole and the way in which the men regarded their work he thought worthy of praise lieutenant colonel deems has in his long and varied career seen much active service in 1905 he served in the filippines with major mccammon during the uprisings there he took an active part in quelling the disturbances on the mexican border in 1914 and he served in the world war it is hoped that he will visit the university frequently and that he will have an opportun ity to give the student body a talk on the part played by field artillery in war and on some of the sidelights of the various military operations in which he has participated a little less than 75 men re sponded to coach geary's first call for basketball candidates last tuesday afternoon in the taylor gymnasium the ability of the lehigh mentor to pro duce winning teams is well known to all the followers of this sport in the city in addi tion to coaching the lehigh team last year he also turned out good teams in 1917 and 1918 all three of these teams met with the greatest success and there is little doubt but that he will live up to all expec tations during the coming sea son the prospects for this year's team are bright as three oustanding lettermen of last year's quintet have returned and there is a wealth of soph omore material the three var sity men referred to are cap tain billmeyer who was captain of the freshman team his first year and whose work at guard has been outstanding during his two years on the varsity berman another guard of no mean ability and hesse an al ternate forward and center the foremost men of last year's freshman team are marcus schultz and many who was the captain however due to the fact that so many candidates have reported no one can be certain of a position on the team as the competition will be keen the first day's practice was confined mainly to a 15-minute scrimmage for the purpose of testing out the shooting and passing ability of the men in this scrimmage the regulars were matched against a team chosen from among the remain der of the candidates and many substitutions were made in both teams the schedule this year is a hard one having on it many of the leading teams of the east about 20 men have reported for assistant manager practice will be held every afternoon un til the thanksgiving holidays at which time it will be suspended until the following week when it will be resumed in order to put the final touches on for the first game of the season which will be played on december 3rd in spite of the fact that the lehigh team has a better chance this year than for sev eral years past to defeat the maroon eleven the tickets to the game have not been going so well this year as usual it seems strange that support of the sixty-first annual gridiron classic should be less than that of previous years it is pos sible that the applications have hardly started to come in but this is rather a hazardous guess with tickets not going so well it is very probable that it will be possible to secure a few at the last minute before the game but even this is rather doubtful the lehigh-lafayette game has become such a clas sic in football history that we have no doubt that there will be the usual crowd in atten dance students wishing to get their coupons exchanged for reserv ed seats must get them in this week to jack petrikin's office
