harriers ready for triangular meet tomorrow varsity gridders to meet strong bucknell team hill and dalers work hard for meet with lafayette and rutgers swimming schedule as well as wrestling meet with columbia ratified bisons will bring one of the strongest teams in east here tomorrow the combined musical clubs are practicing very conscien tiously with the expectation of a very successful season the mandolin symphony orchestra consists at the present time of about 45 men and they are practicing every wednesday night the glee club numbers around 40 just now however there will be a cut to about 30 sometime at the end of this month there is a probability that the musical clubs will record under some new york repro ducing company in about two weeks the glee club accom panied by the mandolin sym phony orchestra will have one side of the record and the university band the other the selections will consist mostly alysis another curiosity is a finely graduated scale for meas uring the diameter of gold-sil ver globules by a vernier meth od made nach prof rich ards in heidelberg a quartz fibre beam is used to make a particularly delicate quantita tive balance for small samples it was made in gottingen the cross arm of this balance is a quartz fibre smaller in diameter than a hair several pocket balances are of ingenious designs for use in prospecting and field work blowpiping standards of color and painstakingly made groups of samples are in the collection also the collection may be seen any time by application to the department a collection of the scientific instruments used by dr joseph w richards for a generation preceding his death the profes sor of metallurgy at lehigh university has been gathered this year it occupies an entire section of the museum of the department many of the in struments were made to order in shops abroad by painstaking german mechanics at heidel berg and berlin by frenchmen in paris and some in england several are inscribed with pro fessor richard's name some were gifts from his european associates of special interest fe the richard's balance an inven tion of his father for determin ing the percentage of tin and led in solder ago the bucknell bisons ranked among the unbeaten teams of the east it was the army which turned back the lewisburg eleven de spite the setback bucknell un doubtedly has one of the strong est small college teams of the season the lehigh eleven has not as yet been able to work its way out of the slump into which it appears to have fallen with the hope of getting on the right side of the score sheet coach wendell has been pushing his charges steadily monday was devoted mostly to rectifying the faults of the muhlenberg game many plays were run over time after time until the rough spots were smoothed off pat paz zetti was at hand also call ing the pigskin-chasers atten tion to their apparent lack of condition efforts were made to speed up the backfield by getting the men away to a fly ing start when the ball was continued on page six radio club makes plans for year the second annual triangular cross country meet between la fayette rutgers and lehigh will be held this coming satur day afternoon at lehigh last year the meet was held at rut gers and it marked the first time in history that these three schools met in a triangular run lehigh won the meet last year with a low score of 23 points ex-captain aitken came in first sames was second and captain chickering was third rutgers placed second in the meet with a score of 33 points and lafayette was third with 64 points it was the first time in history that lehigh beat either of these two schools in a cross-country meet although lafayette was tied in 1919 the brown and white har riers are looking forward with eagerness to duplicate their feat of last year very little oppo sition is expected from the rut gers combination this year as as it is considerably weaker than it was last year this fact was brought out by the decisive manner in which rut gers lost her first match to princeton last week captain schulman is the only man coach weefers can depend on to make a showing for rutgers lafayette however will be a different proposition coach boetcher has a far superior team than he had last year and the team has been training on a hilly course as the major ity of their matches have been over such courses the la fayette team spent tuesday aft ernoon going over the course at lehigh so that when they run continued on page five on saturday it will not be an the organization meeting of lehigh's newest club the math ematics club was held last tuesday in packer hall a large group of arts and bus iness freshmen attended at the invitation of professors fort and weida membership to this club is open only to men who are experts and leaders in field american federation of arts will enable lehigh stu dents to inspect miniature art gallery the lehigh pre-meds held their first meeting of the year last monday night in the lecture room in williams hall the speaker of the evening was dr estes of st luke's hospital dr estes began with a de scription of the requirements needed to practice medicine at the time he entered medical school after a two-year col lege course in the study of mathematics general philoso phy and languages he entered the medical school of the uni versity of virginia at the end of two terms of four and a half months each he graduated with his m.d degree these nine months fitted a man to be come an all-around physician at that time from medical school dr estes went to the mount sinai hospital in new york city this was in the year 1875 his work was contemporaneous with the introduction of anti septics into this country he went on to give an outline of the development of antiseptics by lord lister who collaborat ed with pasteur of france pre vious to the introduction of an tiseptics the mortality from surgical operations was more than sixty per cent as a re sult surgical operations were performed only as a matter of last resort with the introduc tion of antiseptics the moral ity due to operations dropped first to twenty and then to ten per cent continued on morning at seven thirty the junior varsity foot ball team will journey to princeton to play the final game of their season against the hun school the game will be played in the morning and is has defeated by large scores the most prominent prep school teams in new jersey lawrenceville and bordentown are numbered among its vic tims in view of this fact cap tain hyde the junior varsity mentor has been putting his charges through a period of in tensive training in order that they might be in top shape for this game the team has been scrimmaging the varsity reg ularly and the showing eu rope in this country he has been heard at yale harvard princeton columbia dart mouth illinois and michigan and in europe at berlin and the two great english univer sities oxford and cambridge in december mr e j meh ren vice-president of the mc graw-hill publishing company will speak mr mehren at tended the geneva conference on tariffs and international trade and will probably have the lehigh radio club sta tion 3aeq held an important meeting in the physics build ing on thursday afternoon the primary purpose of the meeting was to form plans for the sea son interested men are now working hard to put the station in first-class condition it was decided to appoint certain men to receive code every evening the set now being used is a 100 watt continuous wave set for receiving and transmitting code many improvements have been made on it including the installation of a mercury arc rectifier and hertz antenna and the erection of a new aerial letters from all sections of the united states europe and the pacific ocean acknowledging re cepit of code indicate the vol ume and clearness of the set a power panel which is now under construction is to ' be used by students to test their transmitters all men interested in radio are urged to visit the station which is located on the fourth floor of the physics building the officers of the club are c w guyatt president b l snavely vice-president and h g wiest secretary basketball all candidates for basket ball and for assistant manag ers will report to the lower gym on tuesday november bth with equipment and other members of the uni versity and for the townspeople and visiting friends are monday to friday 4:00 to 6:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 saturdays 9 a m to 2 p m sundays 3:00 to 6:00 p m the exhibition will vary con siderably from that shown last year since all of the pictures are original paintings and there are no reproductions several of the artists were represented in the exhibition last year but many of following the custom estab lished two years ago lehigh has again arranged with the ameri can federation of arts for an exhibition of about thirty-three paintings in oil to be held in the faculty room of the alum ni memorial hall between the dates of november bth and 19th the exhibition is not one of the regular loan exhibitions of the federation but is one specially selected from the 1926 exhibition held in new york in the national academy of de sign by special arrangements lehigh was allowed to have this exhibition on its way back from the south the committee in charge has arranged the hours for satur days when football games are scheduled so as to have the ex hibition open more hours for the benefit of visiting alumni and friends of the university the hours when the exhibition
