are made in rules for year at recent meeting brown and white team in fine condition after last week's trip team hopes to repeat victory of last year in its second meet practices for chorus and cast to begin on first monday in november on franklin field team although hindered by rain ready for game bad weather close contest one act plays in spite of the inclement weather the scabbard and blade society held its initiation on last monday evening the nine neophytes assembled in front of the colonial theatre at 7:45 p m in uniform and burdened with rifles and full packs at this time the rain was coming down in a cold pen erating drizzle the detail did not look very happy for most of the men had come without slickers and there was a most unpleasant march ahead sev eral of the officers of the scab bard and blade were there to take roll and inspect the de tail the detail then marched down main street to broad crossed the hill-to-hill bridge and went toward allentown by way of the back road the members of the detail had been instructed to deploy when out of town and conduct themselves as though in enemy territory this worried the men a good deal for they suspected that something was going to hap pen the route which the de tail was following soon turned off the allentown pike and con tinued to the crossroads from there it led to che philadelphia pike and next over a dirt road to the lookout the detail was instructed to patrol the dirt road and then storm and take the enemy position on the moun tain top the task of taking the lookout from a theoretical enemy seemed simple enough but the opposing forces were not as theorietical as they might have been they attack ed the road and having plenty of blank ammunition made the capture of the enemy position very uncomfortable the detail composed of f m willis sergeant e f baker corporal ; betterly helmstaed ter hopkins schreiner schoen and nason took the lookout by storm and returned home wet weary and fullfledged members of the scabbard and blade the harriers left this after noon at four o'clock on their second trip of the season al though not entirely successful in their encounter last week they nevertheless journeyed to dickinson with a new determin ation to overcome all opposition they will probably stay at the fraternity houses tonight and will go over the course tomor row morning the meet is sche duled to begin at three o'clock that afternoon the bonny brook farm course over which the teams will compete is seven miles in length and although somewhat flatter than the ma jority of courses in this part of the country is considered to be a very good one the dickinson team has one or two very outstanding men on it but due to the fact that the meet tomorrow is the ini tial one for them nothing is known as to their strength taylor who won the middle atlantic championship last spring and pennel who did not run last year on account of football are both on the team this year and will be very for midable opponents last year when the meet was held over the lehigh course they were decisively outclassed by the perfect score of 40-15 the year before however when the brown and white team went up there it was de feated by the narrow margin of one point the score on that occasion being 26-27 the sev en men which constitute the team this week are captain chickering aitkens sames lang laird gadd and rob erts the only change in the line-up of last week being the substitution of roberts a let ter man from last year for fis cus coach kanaly and man ager wilson together with the men mentioned above made up the entire number who went on this trip monday evening at its chap ter house beta theta pi frater nity was host at dinner to the sword and crescent society following the dinner a meet ing was held at which the two new members of the organiza tion helmstaedter and homer were welcomed into the so ciety bosey reiter an hon orary member of the society was also a guest the inadequacy of showers in the dressing rooms of the gym has come to the attention of the society when the de mand for the showers is the greatest after football prac tice this insufficiency presents itself as a decided inconven ience a committee from the society has recommended to vice-president emery that more showers be provided and that a better arrangement be made for their care after installa tion several days will be ne cessary to alter this plumbing since the alteration will cause the showers to be shut off no attempt will be made toward alleviating this complaint until the thanksgiving recess the cheerleaders have been criticized for being inconsider ate of the cheering of our op ponents particularly by dis rupting and drowning them out before they had completed their cheers for a great many years at all athletic events it was the custom to give cheers for charlie taylor one of le high's most beloved benefactors whose gifts are responsible for taylor gymnasium and taylor hall and whose interest in le high was manifested through out his life the sword and crescent demands that this tra ditional cheering be revived and that the cheering of our op ponents shall be without inter ruption the next meeting of sword and crescent will be on november 14th the monday preceding the lafayette game pi delta epsilon selects members sophomore society elects members at a meeting of the eastern intercollegiate wrestling asso ciation which was held in fac alty hall columbia university on sunday october 16 and which was attended by bosey reiter bill sheridan and leon ard horton who were the le high representatives several changes were made in the rules for the present year the main rules decided upon by the asso ciation are given below there is to be a three pound weight allowance for dual meets and a one pound allowance for championship meeta this dif fers from last year's regula tion in that there was only a one pound allowance in weight for both dual and champion ship meets last year at the intercolle giate bouts held in philadelphia there was a leg hold used by several teams as a stall the spectators objected to this and as a consequence a rule was made compelling the referee to give one warning in case of a stall if this is not heeded the referee has the power to k ring the men to a neutral st&^'iing position if there is any stall ing from a standing position the agressor shall be given the referee's position that is the offender shall be put under neath there was also a change in the time advantage and extra periods regulations the time advantage in the main bouts and the extra periods shall be cumulative in extra period bouts this cumulative time ad vantage is intended only as an aid to the referee in determin ing the results of a bout continued on page four there was also a discussion concerning the advisability of making men reduce their weight by artificial means it was decided without the least doubt that it was a very bad practice from a physical point of view another ruling was that all referees are required to dress in white when refereeing a dual or championship meet this is done more for the sake lehigh's soccer booters will make another week-end trip this saturday to play the mont clair athletic club eleven at montclair the brown and white team although hamper ed by the recent inclement weather has been practicing faithfully on the lehigh fiejd the team suffered no losses or injuries during the success ful trip last week and is in fine condition captain damiani's knee is better and he has again reported for practice the montclair team is com posed of ex-college stars who play a hard fast game prince ton defeated them however by the same score that the tigers defeated lehigh 6-0 judging by scores therefore the brown and white has an even chance however the record made by the soccer players against cor nell and syracuse shows that they have improved materially both in teamwork and in accu racy what they lack in abil ity they more than make up for in determination the route to morttclair for those who intend to accompany the team is through easton phillipsburg washington hac kettstown netcong dover caldwell and bloomfield ave nue montclair on reaching montclair continue on bloom field avenue to valley road turn left on valley road and continue until the club house is reached the squad to make the trip will consist of fourteen men al lowing for three substitutions and a re-sub the probable lehigh line-up : g damiani rfb datwyler lfb stoneback rhb pennington chb when it journeys to philadelphia tomorrow to play villanova at franklin field this game to be played on a neutral field will no doubt at tract quite a crowd because it is the only important game scheduled for the big city . after giving the players a monday holiday the coaches expected to have the usual prac tice sessions the rest of the week but a gridiron turned into a quagmire forced a change in the plans the squad was sent through " a light but long workout tuesday and wed nesday in the gymnasium the loss of johnston injured in the swarthmore game is causing the coaches no little concern for he has been doing the bulk of the punting for the team the outlook became more or less en couraging when galanos and c lehr two first-string ends donned their uniforms for the first time in several days some changes will be made in the team for the viilanova game blackmar who replaced kirkpatrick at tackle last sat urday is still at that position on the varsity team raleigh will probably replace johnston as kicker davidowitz star back is expected to be calling signals with simes and bennett or holtz completing the backfield the game promises to be one of the season's best as the brown and white are out to avenge the 6-0 defeat at the hands of villanova two years ago the villanova team coached by the all-american notre dame halfback studi dreher has had a fairly suc cessful season sustaining only one defeat thus far and that at the hands of the strong bucknell bisons villanova has an exceptional ly strong team this year and lehigh will have to call upon all of that same fighting spirit that it showed in the last half of last week's game villanova has a great deal of material to pick from it is reported that there are five complete back field combinations on the team this is a sure sign that lehigh's men will have to go the limit of their strength in order to come through with a victory the villanova line and backfield out weighed the brown and white first-string train schedules for villanova game last monday night the nine surviving members of the phi club held a meeting in drown hall and after some delibera tion chose the ten new mem bers of the
