compton orator of day tells of value of scientific research and gets honorary doctor's degree the servant in the house " a play in three acts given in drown hall football the frosh win relay many prizes b & w notice there will be a meeting of the competitors for the edi torial staff of the brown and white in the brown and white room in drown hall on next tuesday at 4:00 p.m attendance of all competitors is required in order that they may obtain their assignments and receive instruction from members of the staff these meetings will be held every tuesday until the close of the competition enrollment shows slight increase in students pres announces that four more than last year have registered 802 engineers with only a few hours left before the opening whistle at princeton the team is anxious to go working hard all week rain or shine the team is in excellent condition with the mistakes of last week's game corrected coach wendell has obtained a smooth working com bination that promises to give princeton one of the hardest battles of the season due to the good showing of van blarcom at halfback in saturday's game he will prob ably see action against prince ton tomorrow he is a hard fighter a good offensive and de fensive man but lacks exper ience the starting backfield will probably be the same with flynn at quarter and davido witz johnston and simes in the other positions davidowitz proved his capabilities as a quarterback in the ursinus game along with his brilliant runs passing and kicking simes with his defensive play ing will prove a factor in le high's favor as will johnston with his punting and flynn call ing signals continued on page six the servant in the house a bit of improbable drama light ened by some very clever com edy was presented last tuesday evening at drown hall under the auspices of the junior class charles allais co-author of the play portrayed the principal male role that of manson the butler the comedy was sup plied chiefly by edwin s ful comer playing the role of rob ert smith black sheep of his family the acting of all the characters was very sincere and made up for any deficiencies of the play itself continued on page six the theme of the drama re volved about the efforts of a scholarly clergyman to revivify his fast decreasing following he seeks the aid of his brother the bishop bernares and of his wife's brother the bishop of lancaster they both promise to come to his aid but the bich op of lancaster bishop james arrives first he turns out to be more or less of a villian plac ing the value of money above that of virtue meanwhile rob ert the clergyman's brother re turns to regain his daughter mary who has been living with her uncle he discourses with senior honorary taps new man military society completes roster sword and crescent society elects members to fill two vacancies scabbard and blade fills places left open by graduation with a startling series of up sets the sophomore class on the afternoon of founder's day defeated the freshmen in the contests held annually on that day the freshman classes had not lost the contest for two years when the present junior classmen accommodated the sophomores by wearing their caps on sundays as well as on the other days of the week between the halves the heavy rope which stood the test last founder's day broke under the strain when both under-classes opposed each other this as well as the football game was a tie the two classes indulged in an impromptu event with one of the pieces of rope left after the break a group of fresh men were parading around the stadium with the other half of the rope when the sophomores attacked them the swaying mass gradually moved toward the south side + he sophomores stronghold where the rope was carried to the top of the stands as a trophy of the fight continued on page six as a result of these two scoreless games the classes met for the rope-tying contest with the score in favor of neither class perhaps it was the ex perience gained last year that gave the sophomores an advan tage over the wearers of the green at any rate they man aged to carry the contest by a margin of two men the pants tearing contest swung in the same direction after seeing it fought one year the sophomore in presenting dr compton for the degree of doctor of sci ence dr c c bidwell pro fessor of physics spoke science and doctor of science college of wooster doctor of philosophy prince ton university one time aero nautical engineer for the unit ed states signal corps assis tant scientific attache ameri can embassy at paris fellow and president of the american physical society member of the national academy of sci ence and author of numerous scientific papers which have contributed notably to our knowledge of physics continued on page six i would especially mention his work on the photo-eltctric effect on the structure of crys tals by x-ray photography on wireless thermonic detectors on thermal effects produced by stretching of wires on ioniza tion fluorescence and dissocia tion of gases on the study of low voltage arcs and on special radiation his work on ioniza tion and radiation potentials and on the discharge of electri city through gases has contrib uted signally to our knowledge in the field of atomic physics it is my high honor and priv elege to present to you mr president dr karl taylor military meeting this evening brown and white has competition all students invited to hear prof brown war ace speak of aviation many sophomores and freshmen are out for editorial board the founder's day football game ended with a victory for the sophomores the freshmen kicked off to the 10-yard line silverman getting the ball and running about 10 yards before he was stopped after three vain attempts to break through the freshman line they kicked throughout most of the quarter the freshmen were on the offen sive their interference was strong and they were playing a good brand of football about the middle of the first quarter the freshmen came very near drop-kicking for a goal from the 25-yard line the ball hit the bar and just missed going over it was the sophomores ball but they were unable to advance very far and kicked giving the frosh the ball on their own 43 yard line they made several good runs but the sophs held at the critical moments and the quarter ended scoreless during the second quarter the yearlings were again on the of fensive they kept ploughing through the sophomore line completing forward passes and making some nice runs final ly they were on the 1-yard line and went over with a plunge through center however the frosh were offside and the touchdown didn't count the frosh lost some of their fight after that and the half ended with the sophs on the offensive the freshmen came back in the second half with vengeance and lamb a fast back started it off by a beautiful run of 23 yards throughout this quarter the frosh were continually on the offensive but always the sophomore line held at the right time the last quarter was marked by plenty of forward passes on both sides the sophs were more on the offensive this quar two honorary one master's and twenty-three bac calaureate degrees were con ferred by president charles russ richards and the annual list of honor students and those receiving special awards and prizes was read the founder's day address was delivered by dr karl tay lor compton professor of phy sics at princeton university one of the foremost physicists of the present day in his ad dress entitled specialization and cooperation in scientific research professor compton emphasized the fact that it is the duty of many branches of modern industry to contribute toward the furtherence of re search since they owe their suc cess to processes and inventions made possible by discoveries of research workers dr compton was the recip ient of the honorary degree of doctor of science which was conferred by the local institu tion in recognition of his out standing work in certain branches of physics including x-rays wireless and gases the other honorary degree was con ferred on robert culbertson hays heck a graduate of le high university and now pro fessor of mechanical engineer ing at rutgers university in recognition of his achievements in the field of analytical research and his contributions to science in the form of engineering text books treatises and profession al papers the degree of master of arts was conferred on earl haines brown b.s of slatington continued on page five bachelor of arts george justus kuck forest hills n.y ; robert louis longstreet as bury park n.j george henry civil engineers hold meeting arcadia dance is very successful enrollment for the year as announced by dr richards dur ing the founder's day exercis es has just forged beyond that of 1926 by the slight margin of four this figure is more signi ficant when it is remembered that new rules in force are bar ring all flunk-outs from other schools and that tuition costs took a decided jump with the opening of this semester of the 1515 enrolled 239 are seniors 296 are juniors 389 are sophomores and 584 fresh men and 7 are special students in 1926 there were 220 sen iors the junior class was small er by 25 and the sophomore class was smaller by 44 but the freshman class the largest in the of lehigh was larg er by 77 since it was the wish of the founder asa packer that le high function primarily as a polytechnic institution of learn ing it is fitting that the enroll ment of 802 in the college of engineering is larger than that of any other department of this number 199 are sopho mores 165 are juniors 148 are seniors and 280 are freshmen it was not the purpose of the founder to exclude non-tech nical curricula concrete proof of this may be seen in the en rollment of 357 in the college of arts and science and 356 in the college of business ad ministration the 357 arts men include 47 seniors 67 juniors 83 sophomores and 158 freshmen in the college o f business administration continued on page four last monday afternoon the lehigh valley engineering so ciety held a join meeting with the lehigh valley section of the american society of civil en gineers the meeting which lasted about an hour and a half was held in the physics lecture room the attendance was very good and a great deal of inter est was shown in the activities of those two organizations continued on page four the speaker for the occasion was robert ridgeway the chief engineer of the board of trans portation of new york city mr ridgeway gave a very in teresting illustrated lecture about the various intricacies and problems of the transporta tion facilities in the large cities and how the new york engin eers were coping with the diffi culties he showed how in some parts of new york city sword and crescent honor ary society held its first meet ing of the year on tuesday eve ning the meeting was held at the chi psi lodge and was pre ceded by a dinner the most important matter then taken up at the business meeting was the election of two new members to fill the vacan cies left by o'callaghan and sullivan who did not return to college this year the two men elected were horner and helm staedter tap day for these men was held on founder's day between the halves of the freshman and sophomore foot ball game the seniors were formed in a line and the two men chosen were tapped among other points discussed at the meeting were steps to be taken in the betterment of cam pus spirit at the next meeting a definite program of procedure will be outlined as to what ac tion shall be taken on this point an attempt will also be made to better the sportsmanship shown at basketball games and wrestling meets sword and crescent will sit in a body at all athletic games sword and crescent is a sen ior honorary society composed of fifteen men who have done considerable extra - curricular work members are chosen on a point system each activity having a definite value elec tion is held at the end of each year continued on page four continued on page two aviation past and present will be the attraction at the first open military meeting of the year to be held this evening in drown hall this meeting is being sponsored jointly by the scabbard and blade society national honorary r.o.t.c fra ternity and the lehigh union and is the first of a series that are being planned for the en tertainment of the student body the details of the program have not been revealed by the committee in charge of making arrangements but it is under stood that two men with rec ords of service in the air forces will tell of the various phases of aviation one of these is understood to be captain sid ney m brown better known at lehigh as professor of his tory in the local department of history and government captain brown who exchang ed his military rank for an ox ford degree and the lehigh pro fessorship flew with the british forces during the world war burr men needed the turnout of competitors for the burr has so far been extremely poor this year a much greater number of men are needed so there is a splendid opportunity for any man to make the board those who have not turned in their names as yet call the editor at 1989 or see him in the burr room in drown hall at 8:00 p m next wednes taking the advanced courses in military science and tactics its purpose is to un ite in closer relationship the military departments of the american universities and col leges to preserve and develop the essential qualities of good and efficient officers and to prepare its members to take an active part in the miltary af fairs of the communities in which they live it believes that miltary service is an obli gation of citizenship and it en deavors to spread intelligent in formation concerning the mili tary requirements of the united states in twenty-three years the so ciety has grown to sixty-eight active units and seven alumni competition for positions on the brown and white editorial staff started last week with about forty competitors turning out the majority of the men are freshmen it is not too late for new men to enter the com petition and men who are in terested in editorial work are urged to make a try men with ability as columnist that is campus news write-ups and ath letic reviews are especially urged to enter the competition as material is scare competitors should not be come discouraged if their ar ticles are not used in the first couple of issues there is a long stretch ahead and the man who sticks to the job and turns in all the material he can will make the staff there will be a meeting of the competitors next tuesday at 4 p m and every tuesday thereafter in the brown and white room in drown hall un til competition ends this meet ing is compulsory and it is very important that everyone should be there the first college dance the founder's day hop held in drown hall on tuesday eve ning turned out to be a great success it was sponsored by the arcadia and was attended by a great number of fresh men who took advantage of the opportunity to appear officially at their first college function continued on page six the dance scheduled to fol low the performance of the servant in the house got off to a late start at eleven due to the fact that the play ran for ty-five minutes overtime it ended at two o'clock a crowd of about two hundred attended and all enjoyed themselves to the fullest extent a special feature of the occasion was the
