at annual banquet tonight james ward packard 84 battle expected final game of season to be played at easton tomorrow lehigh batsmen meet lafayette continued on page six three honorary degrees will be conferred at the exercises while over one hundred and six ty men will receive their sheep skins although this number is dependent to a large extent on the outcome of numerous re examinations to which many of the seniors are subject of this number thirty-seven will receive degrees in the college of arts and science thirty-four in the college of business administra tion while seventeen will grad uate as civil engineers nine tuesday is university day the ceremonies will again be gin on tuesday with an acad emic procession from the mem orial building to the chapel at 10:45 and the commencement exercises will take place at the chapel at eleven o'clock the address at these exercises will be delivered by dr m i pupin of columbia university at nine o'clock tuesday evening the graduating class will hold their last social function in drown hall the senior ball while at two o'clock in the af ternoon the class day exer cises will be observed on the campus around the flag pole president c r richards will hold a formal reception at drown memorial hall at 8:30 monday evening this recep tion will not only be for the graduating class and their fam ilies but also for the trustees alumni faculty and all friends of the university there will be informal gath erings of the alumni at the memorial building during the remainder of the day and will give the students and their par ents an opportunity of meeting the alumni and their families and also the members of the faculty on monday morning the board of trustees will meet in the memorial building the fifty-ninth commence ment exercises of lehigh uni versity which will take place from sunday until tuesday in clusive will be formally opened with an academic procession from the alumni memorial building to the university chapel at 10:45 on sunday morning the baccalaureate sermon will be delivered at the chapel at eleven o'clock by the rt rev philip cook bishop of delaware program for commencement approximately one hundred and sixty to be honored tuesday morning — class day ceremonies monday afternoon five cents fifty-ninth graduating class to receive degrees tuesday the campus so nearly de serted the early part of the week is today once more becom ing populated and tomorrow its paths will be crowded with a colorful throng of 1000 alum ni resplendent in newly ac quired costumes which plainly bespeaks the greatest day of the college year alumni day mem bers of the seven's and the two's will this year be in the greatest majority this being the year for their five year reun ion although independent re unions and back-every-year re unions shall be very much in evidence the classes officially represented will be 77 82 and every class following whose nu merals end with a two or seven and also the class of 26 the class of 77 will be the honor ed guests as this is the occasion of their fiftieth reunion this afternoon a meeting of the alumni council was held in the memorial building at which each class and alumni club was represented and the matters of alumni business were cleared up before the real festivities begin in earnest to night brings with it the alumni banquet at the hotel bethle hem as well as a banquet for the wives of the returning grads at the same place to morrow morning the annual alumni meeting will be held in the alumni room of the mem orial building at which time class day events to be impressive 0 d k initiates seven juniors class of 99 honored guests at dinner in ball room of hotel bethlehem — special plans and entertainment arranged for 350 alumni — wives of returning graduates also to hold banquet last class function of class of 1927 to be held on monday afternoon leaders in campus affairs are elected to senior national honorary two o'clock e g grace 99 to act as toastmaster at dinner united states and a member of the 50 year reunion class the next speaker will be a parker smith 84 who in the unavoid able absence of mr packard who is very ill in a cleveland hospital will speak for the class of 84 and mr packard alvan macauley president of the packard motor car co repre senting the 35 year reunion class will next speak and will undoubtedly tell of some of mr packard's plans for the new laboratory continued on page six f r dravo 87 president elect of the alumni association and former chairman of the the alumni banquet his year is to be more than a re union it is to be a great meet ing of lehigh men to celebrate a year of real achievement in the university and to honor james ward packer whose generosity has made possible the packard engineering lab oratory which is to be the fin est building of its type of which any university can boast the banquet as in former years is to be the opening feature of the alumni festivities and is to held in the ball room of the hotel bethlehem at seven o'clock tonight the classes holding reunions outstanding mets receive awards dr bidwell to come to lehigh prizes given to senior junior and sophomore metallurgists professor of physics at cornell to succeed prof macnutt this year are those whose num erals end in seven's or two's with the class of 77 being hon ored guests on the occasion of their fiftieth reunion the spir it and joviality which always makes this event a success is to exist in abundance and by any chance should there be a dull moment the entertainment provided by three of the return ing classes will enliven the fes tivities the classes of 02 and 12 have secured singers to aug ment their own talent and the class of 97 is prepared with a pantomine performance pecul iarly appropriate to the occa sion following the dinner pres ident emeritus drinker and president richards will be in troduced and the speakers of the evening will be presented the speaker of the evening will be george w wickersham 77 former attorney-general of the professor barry macnutt who for the past twelve years has been professor of physics and head of the department has relinquished the responsi bility for the administration of the department and will con tinue as a professor therein continued on page five on monday afternoon the class of 27 will hold their last class function as undergradu ates the class day exercises of the graduating seniors will be gin with the assembly at drown hall at two o'clock the sen iors will wear their academic caps and gowns and carry the traditional long clay pipes which have been part of every lehigh class day affair the exercises will begin with the march to the platform erected by the flag pole below packer hall the march will be the academic procession on founder's day baccalaureate sunday and uni versity day will assemble at 10:30 a m daylight saving time as follows 1 members of the board of trustees the president emeri tus the president the vice president the dean the cler gy the speakers and the reci pients of honorary degrees in the office of the president in the alumni memorial building 2 directors of curricula the director of the students health service the librarian and pro fessors in the faculty room in the alumni memorial hall 3 associate professors and assistant professors in the north alcove of the memorial hall in the alumni memorial building 4 instructors and assistants in the south alcove of the mem orial hall in the alumni mem orial building 5 candidates for degrees ta ken in course at the flag pole 6 when present the band will form to the north of the flag pole and play appropriate march music during the proces sion at the conclusion of the exercises the band will again form at the flag pole and play during the recessional closing with the alma mater formation for the proces sion 1 candidates for degrees taken in course arranged by curricula as directed by the marshal 2 assistants 3 instructors 4 assistant professors continued on page six on saturday afternoon while alumni activities are in full swing on the lehigh campus the brown and white baseball nine will meet the lafayette team at easton although the maroon has already defeated the lehigh team twice in the an nual series the final game will undoubtedly be closely contest ed all the way by captain hayes and his men lafayette has by far the more impressive rec ord as she is enjoying one of her best seasons for many years her star battery com posed of yeisley and grube has mowed down the opposition with comparative ease through out the season lehigh exper ienced real difficulty in the op ening games but has showed marked improvement in suc ceeding games so that this final battle should be the most stren uous diamond duel of the sea continued on page six lafayette • smothered lehigh in the second game of the series by a 11-1 count in this game the maroon showed their hit lehigh dropped the first game of the series to the ma roon batsmen by a 3-0 score in a game which was called at the end of seven innings because of rain hesse started on the mound for the brown and white opposing the lafayette southpaw hick yeisley al though hesse was not up to the calibre of his opponent in the pitching game he pulled him self out of many bad holes the team gave him practically no support in the pinches altho the outfield was dependable in addition to the lack of support hesse issued numerous passes on balls which accounted dir ectly or indirectly for two runs continued on page six the department of metallur gy this year instituted awards to those students in the sen ior junior and sophomore classes making the best rec ords the award is based on scholarship leadership and pop ularity scholarship counting two-thirds the latter two seven members of the junior class were tapped omicron delta kappa during the chapel exercises of the last day of school membership in this na tional senior honorary society is the highest recognition of successful leadership in cam pus affairs which may be ten dered a junior the men chosen from the class of 1928 were william b billmeyer thomas f burke donald b straub john r de nise edward w mcgovern george w fearnside and paul g gilmore these men will select three more members next fall when initiated they elected as officers for next year g w fearnside presi dent j r denise vice-presi dent and p g gilmore secre tary-treasurer continued on page six omicron delta kappa was founded in 1914 and now has most of its chapters in south ern colleges lehigh being the most northern the lehigh circle was established two years ago and immediately took first rank among senior hon oraries because of the construc tive policy which it
