superb mu sic at twenty-first festival burr meeting there will be a business meeting of the burr at 7:15 tomorrow night in the burr room drown hall this meeting is open to all fresh men who desire to enter any of the burr competitions and they should all attend maroon captures initial game by 3-0 score dur ing rain storm game called ridsdale retiring president decisive victory scored by navy in lacrosse scholastic meet keenly disputed yearling batsmen win from nassau lattig's men lose 18-1 in loosely played game on flooded field first district of p i a a holds meet on lehigh field liberty 2nd strauss given excellent support as frosh defeat princeton 6-2 no mud cleats many notable marks were hung up in this meet especially in the field events christman and aiken teammates from norristown finished in a tie position in the pole vault with district number 1 of the pennsylvania interscholastic athletic association held a very spirited track and field meet on the upper field of lehigh uni versity last saturday the scoring in the interscholastic meet was very evenly divided as is attested by the fact that lower merion emerged win ner with only 25 1-2 points to her credit tamaqua and media each acquired 16 with bethle hem and norristown at 22 1-2 and 22 the other teams to score were lehighton 3 ; ma honoy city 5 easton 7 ab ington high 5 chester 17 northampton 3 reading 2 and ridley park 2 continued on page four dr esty speaker at e e meeting with a seventh inning rally that netted four runs the le high yearling batsmen triumph ed over the princeton frosh by the score of 6-2 in the game on saturday afternoon at prince ton strauss the versatile brown and white pitcher proved to be an important fac tor in the victory by holding the tigers to only two hits continued on page four the second inning opened with both sides scoreless but by the time it closed prince ton was in the lead with two runs brought home by binns and warfield in the third frame bennett crashed through for lehigh with a single run still leaving the home team with the advantage the game progressed with an uninterupt ed score up to the end of the sixth chapter when layton took binns position on the mound for princeton layton was credited with being a for midable hurler having held ex eter to a one-hit game but turned out to be the tigers un doing in this instance the a 71-54 defeat administered by lafayette on march field saturday afternoon ended a rather disastrous dual meet season for the lehigh track team although not victorious the brown and white entries gave a good account of them selves and were the principals in practically all the outstand ing feats of an exciting day of competition during which two lehigh records were broken a slight wind and intermittent showers hindered the partici pants and made their perfor mances all the more remark able continued on page four bill billmeyer and duffy ait ken both juniors and two of coach kanaly's dependables took their places alongside of carol burke mcgrath and other brown and white track immortals by virtue of record breaking victories in their spe cialties the former running in the rear of the field for one third of a lap in the quarter mile flashed a brilliant sprint on the far-side straightaway which made up the lost ground he forged ahead of his rivals on the last turn and with a great burst of speed breasted the tape a victor in the unpre cedented time of 51.6 seconds this mark displaced that of 51.8 held jointly by hanwey and carlson for the last ten years in establishing himself as le high's greatest quarter-miler billmeyer had the satisfaction of winning the rubber-race with captain brown of the maroon he won the dual meet race last year but was nosed tennis team adds two more wins varsity batsmen to meet rutgers from the appearance of the score it might seem that the navy lacrosse team completely swamped lehigh last saturday at annapolis it is true that the count was 18 to 1 but that marks no fair criterion of the true merits of the two teams the academy twelve was good but it was fully equipped with mud-cleats putting the brown and white team which had only ordinary lacrosse shoes at a de cided disadvantage it had rained heavily for two hours prior to the game conse quently the field was in wretch ed condition lehigh could do nothing but slip and slide while navy twisted and dodged its way to the goal at will it proved to be almost a farce in the first half the lehigh de fense was occupying the slip perier portion of the field they were practically helpless the ball was in the hands of the lehigh attack but a half dozen times the remainder of the period saw an avalanche of shots directed at the brown and white goal russ ottey succeeded in stopping a num ber of difficult shots but the nearness of the shooters and the continued on page three lafayette and perm state fall before netmen as they gam stride lehigh dropped the first game of the series with the lafayette batsmen to the ma roon nine last saturday after noon by a 3-0 score the game was played before a fair sized crowd at taylor field during many showers which came down intermittently the fray was called at the begin ning of the eighth inning how ever due to an unusually heavy burst of rain continued on page four harry hesse started on the mound for the brown and white opposing the lafayette southpaw hick yeisley al though hesse was not up to the calibre of his opponent in the pitching game he pulled him self out of many bad holes the team gave him practically no support in the pinches al though the outfield was depen dable in addition to the lack of support hesse issued num erous passes on balls which accounted directly or indirectly for two runs in the second the bases were loaded and but one out but a short infield fly and another put-out saved that inning for lehigh in the third inning however two lafayette runners crossed the plate with one out hesse issued a free pass to grube thompson and kirkleski both got on base safe ly on scratch hits grube scor ing on the latter's chementi and mcgarvey then walked forcing in thompson hesse then struck out yeisley to make the third out for the inninng in the sixth frame thompson was walked going to third on sarni's single and scoring on the annual convention of the middle atlantic district of the intercollegiate newspaper as sociation was held in bethlehem on friday and saturday may 13 and 14 with the lehigh uni versity branch acting as host the convention committee was composed of the following members of the lehigh brown and white george f kennedy 27 chairman paul g gilmore 28 ward wiegand 28 a charles roberts 28 and fred w whaley 28 the convention opened fri day afternoon in drown hall with a business session lasting the greater part of the after noon there were approxi mately fifty delegates from colleges and universities in this district in attendance j gor don ridsdale retiring editor of the brown and white and also retiring president of the district of college newspapers presided at the session which he opened with an address of welcome the business of the afternoon included minutes of the last meeting of the asso ciation held last year at george washington university washington d c this was followed by various reports and discussions the meeting was concluded by the appointment of committees by president ridsdale in which the names of the colleges were mentioned and not the delegates after the adjournment the delegates were conducted on a tour of the campus and were given an opportunity to obtain first-hand information on the bach choir which was the main attraction for many continued on page four a banquet was held in the evening at the sun inn and lehigh university calendar b & w nine pointed for victory in second fray with scarlet c.e society holds final meeting sophomores elect class officers the civil engineering so ciety held its last regular meet ing of the year thursday eve ning in the physics building the features of the meeting were the nominations of of ficers for the ensuing year and an illustrated lecture by mr w rudolfs upon the sub ject of sewage treatment and changes occuring during the process mr rudolfs who is chief of the new jersey sewage exper imental station was heralded as a lecturer of unusual inter est and his presentation of the topic gave ample proof that his reputation had been well earn ed sufficient to say that the lecture was both interesting and instructive the usual eats and smokes terminated the meeting and with it the regime of the pres ent officers ended the inter esting programs arranged for the meetings have made the past year a signal success and it is to be hoped that the in coming officers will maintain the high standard set by pres ident castor the election of officers for next year an informal talk by prof esty and a student paper by r cetina were the chief features of the meeting of the lehigh university electrical society held last friday night in the physics building the new officers elected were president h c towle vice president t g pierson sec retary w d goodale jr treasurer w w hoeke at the close of the election the meeting was turned over to the new officers by the retiring seniors r cetina then read a paper on the construction and use of the klydonograph a sub ject which forms the basis of the speaker's thesis this in strument is used on electrical transmission lines to detect and measure the voltage in the lines when unusual surges take place in use the machine is connected to clockwork and recording mechanism so that a continous chronographic record of all disturbances in the lines is obtained the informal talk given by prof esty on his european trip took place in the seminar room of the physics building he described his visits to the university of glasgow edin burg london france belgium and switzerland he also dis cussed in a very interesting manner the economic status of europe and their need for trained men the sophomore class meeting for the election of officers for the coming year was held in coppee hall last thursday morning immediately follow ing the services which were held at the college meeting at the flag pole nominations for the various offices had been made at a class meeting held the preceding friday and in most cases there were but four or five men running for each office the results of the elec tions were president l c crewe vice-president t m brennan secretary j i kirk patrick treasurer l d tran tum historian r r hertzler and sergeant-at-arms h l hesse both the meeting for the nomination of the officers and the meeting at which the elec tions took place were conduct ed in a very orderly manner much in contrast with several of the meetings held last year continued on page three the twenty-first bach festi val was held in the lehigh chapel on friday and saturday may 13 and 14 this festival which is perhaps the best known musical conclave of its kind in the country annually draws many hundreds of visi tors from all parts of the country to bethlehem to hear the rendering of the master musicians works by the famed bach choir although the chapel was filled to its utmost on friday it was even more crowded on saturday when peo ple stood on every available bit of floor space in order to hear the wonderful singing the most interesting single feature of the performance to gether with the trombone choir was probably the fact that there were no soloists the solo parts being sung by the respec tive groups of the choir that is all the sopranos sang the so prano solos the altos the alto solos and so on the mass is mostly written in five voices first and second soprano alto tenor and bass and dr wolle director of the choir had divid ed his excellent soprano section to conform with this division of bach he did the same thing once before but with by no means so happy results as at tended this year's performance of the four voice parts the altos did the finest work in the solo numbers both in quality of tone and in unison of phrasing and breath control their work in the qui sedes of the glo ria and in the exquisite agnus dei was as nearly perfect as unison singing of solo numbers can be the other voices were excellent also notably in the du,et christe eleison for first and second soprano voices in the kyrie the quoniam gained vastly by the use of the bass voices as the horn obbligato invariably drowns out a single solo voice by reason of the high register and the sonority of the instru ment the tenors were excep tionally good and sang with re markable fidelity to pitch when the difficulty of the music and its generally high register is considered the orchestra consisted of members of the new york sym phony society orchestra in stead of members of the phila delphia orchestra who have furnished the accompaniment for the mass for many years whatever may be said of the undoubted flexibility of the philadelphia orchestra there is no doubt that the new york organization was a good deal more responsive to dr wolle's indicated wishes than the phil adelphians have been for sev eral years at least continued on page four the high point of orchestral or rather obbligato playing in the performance was reached by isadore bery who gave a superb rendition of the french horn obbligato in the quoniam both in tone and in execution before leaving on its long trip the lehigh tennis team won two important victories one over lafayette the other over perm state bringing the home season to a close with the well earned victory over perm state winning six out of seven matches the lafayette match was the continuation of a match begun earlier in the season which had to be called off on account of rain after the com pletion of only one match a vic tory by sullivan over moore continued on page three the match with lafayette de veloped into the most closely contested of the season the re sult not being decided until the very last match a victory by hayward and usher in the doubles in the five singles matches played on friday la fayette had the better showing winning three to two for the brown and white however the victory of sullivan from the earlier date together with two out of three in the doubles gave lehigh a hard-earned vic tory in the singles sullivan doty and usher overcame their opponents and in the doubles doty and trumble and hay tomorrow the brown and white batsmen journey to new brunswick to play the scarlet batsmen on their field this is the second game of the season with the scarlet men they hav ing won the first game by a score of 8 to 7 after a rally in the ninth inning the rutgers team has not had any more successful sea son thus far than the lehigh team they were decisively beaten by the university of pennsylvania tossers to the score of 11 to 2 and were also defeated by the lafayette bats men the hitting strength of the raritans has not been very remarkable this season other than their game here a month ago their best pitcher is de muchio a southpaw who usual ly can last only six innings ei ther demuchio or trialo who pitched the last three innings of their game here will prob ably start on the mound for the scarlet continued on page four the lehigh squad has im proved very much since their
