functions the junior prom this eve ning will probably prove to be the most spectacular entertain ment of the season elaborate plans looking to the best pos sible dance have been carried out to minute details so that taylor gymnasium totally transformed now presents the appearance of a royal reception hall this prom will surpass in splendor any previous at tempt the mustard and cheese dramatic society was scheduled to repeat its performance as saturday evening's entertain ment because of difficulties however the showing has been cancelled alpha tau omega tea dances and sport events will white hopes to give scarlet and gray first defeat tomorrow afternoon the base ball team will help provide en tertainment for the many fair guests when they take on franklin and marshall at tay lor field this is one of the three sport events that will be staged to give the house party guests a view of lehigh ath letes in action it will be re membered that the only foot ball victory of last fall was won with the fair ones at fall house party as an inspiration and chances look favorable for a brown gnd white victory to morrow to date the franklin and marshall batsmen have had lit tle opportunity to display their wares and little is known of the baseball ability of the lan caster aggregation the southern trip although decidedly disastrous as far as victories were concerned gave the team invaluable experience this was quite apparent last saturday against the scarlet of rutgers fielding errors and the lack of co-ordinated batting was responsible for the loss of the game but a vast improve ment was apparent since the first tilt of the season against muhlenberg only the unfavor able weather wednesday pre vented the team from showing this improvement in a schedul ed return match with the car dinal and gray at muhlenberg this steady improvement has been more and more apparent as the season has progressed and the pitching staff especially has shown to a more decided ad vantage what is most notice ably lacking at the present time is a smooth fielding team me diocre fielding and poor sup port of the pitchers has been responsible for the loss of sev eral games the necessity for a stronger batting order altho not as evident as in the initial game still gives coach johnson much concern tomorrow's line-up is not certain but it is probable that the following men will first her first intercollegiate wrestling championship the athletic board of control at its recent meeting awarded trophy rings to coach billy sheridan and the members of the wiestl ing team irtaddition to captain jim mie reed who is now intercol legiate 125-lb champion and last year was 115-lb title hold er the men to be tendered this special recognition are e c mcgovern runner-up in the 115-lb class w m heilman third place winner in the 135 lb division e a keller 145 lb class ; l long 158-lb entry ; andy lehr third place winner in 175-lb class bill littell third place winner in the heavy weight division and p w sin well manager and retiring pres ident of the intercollegiate wrestling association the election of w b bill meyer for two seasons a guard on the varsity basketball team as captain for next year was ratified by the board small letters were awarded the bas ketball team also the following men received the insignia : smith and c schaub joint captains e schaub billmeyer demoyer hesse berman and harrier manager arrangements for the inter scholastic track and field meet for pennsylvania district one were received by the board the cups to be given at this meet have already arrived and the individual medals have been ordered official entry blanks were mailed soon after the meeting and already norristown has responded the district which lehigh will entertain on may fourteenth includes mont gomery lehigh northampton berks bucks monroe carbon chester delaware and schuyl kill counties a request was forwarded to the board of trustees asking that definite regulations con cerning the use of taylor field by outside interests be formul ated and forwarded to the ath letic board this action was taken in ail effort to simplify the board's problem in the mat ter of granting numerous peti tions sophomores hold annual banquet netmen to play perm tomorrow many leading intercollegiate players to be in match most exciting dinner given in years at drown hall junior promenade to be tonight will be one of the most outstanding social events of the year with the passing of tonight lehigh will have witnessed the most outstanding social event of the year — that of the junior promenade in the past years each prom committee has en deavored to give lehigh some thing bigger and better than the previous committees and this year the same policy has been carried out the orchestra which is to furnish the music this evening is les layden's yale band these fellows have acquired great fame throughout all col legiate circles for their excel lent music and their selection of novelties the success which they attained at the dartmouth winter carnival in the past year is a true example of their worth besides the charm of the mu sic a number of the dance hits of the mustard and cheese show will be given the black bottom will be featured by ced smith and his irresistible fem inine partner allie gee with the beautiful spring dec orations of smilax and the green and white paper representing the spanish moss of the south the junior prom promises to be the most successful dance that lehigh has ever held class of 1930 the freshmen brought the banquet season to a very suc cessful close with a large and enthusiastic banquet at the ho tel bethlehem on tuesday eve ning all the elements which go toward making a successful banquet were present a fine meal excellent music and an enthusiastic spirit of rejoicing among the members of the class the attendance was prac tically one hundred percent in spite of the efforts of the soph omores the class assembled in the ballroom of the hotel promptly at 6:30 for a meal which could hardly be surpassed the menu consisted of sardine canape cream of asparagus roast ca pon with browned potatoes and green beans waldorf salad and ice cream and cake after cv eryone had finished the repast president oiler called on pro fessor bradley stoughton head of the department of metal lurgy as the first speaker pro fessor stoughton chose as his subject girls he spoke of the uplifting power which a girl of the right sort can have over any man she raises his mind by giving him interesting things to do interesting things to read and to think about the civilization of a country can al ways be measured by the posi tion of the women the high er their level is the higher the level of the civilization of the country after professor stoughton's speech oiler called on a few of the guests for a few words fred trafford spoke on the dif ficulties of his position with the sophomores on one side and the freshmen on the other dean mcconn when called upon 1 , cautioned the members of the class to adjust them selves at the beginning of their second year to the conditions they have found since entering college if they have not already done so he said that they should all go into extra-curri cular activities if they have not already done so but he warned them against going into too many as they have been the cause of very many fellows flunking out of college bosey reiter talked about the direc tions which the impulses that come to everybody can take the first way is in a sudden outburst of anger which is us ually regretted a second way is to be hidden under the sur face and then break out into poor channels the third and the only good way is to take it and turn it into good channels soon if this is done habits will be formed which will make a good clean mind and body we need good men to carry on the strength of the race so continued on page four during the past week tau beta pi the honorary engineer ing fraternity initiated eleven new members the ceremonies were concluded with a banquet held thursday evening at the hotel bethlehem the guests of the society were president richards prof babasinian prof stoughton prof beaver prof long and prof esty the speakers of the evening were president richards prof bab asinian prof stoughton and prof beaver the juniors who were induct ed into the society were j a betterly j r denise e w diener r m goepp jr w d goodale jr r b jewell f e kuchinski t j pierson n j schreiner h c towle and f m willis president richards as the first speaker of the evening prefaced his address with a re cital of the circumstances sur rounding the gift of mr frank packard to the university as an introduction to the main body of the speech he described the startling experiment of keeping a crotan fly in an at mosphere of hydrogen for over an hour with apparently no affect a fact which was at to tal variance with all scientific theories previously existing and which was performed in the general electric research laboratory this he used as an illustration of the persis tence of outworn and fallacious beliefs in the minds of men idols of the mind as francis bacon termed them the presi dent then made a plea for abso lute open-mindedness in all fields of thought prof stoughton as the next speaker delivered a brief but trenchant speech his two main themes were the leader ship expected of the men who have shown themselves worthy of election to tau beta pi and the duty incumbent upon all professional men of the world of keeping the industries of the world clear of the dangers which threaten them and to strive constantly towards ele vating them to the highest pitch of efficiency his address was illustrated by two quota tions from the writings of theodore roosevelt continued on page four prof beaver next delivered a short and witty address on that most pressing of modern questions the chinese repub lic after a few preliminary remarks concerning the ban quet chairs and state of grace of his audience prof beaver reviewed briefly the economic condition of china attempted to unravel the present military situation and concluded by calling attention to the need for modern economic improvements continued on page four considering the excitement before the event the sophomore class did very well in regard to the success and numbers that attended their banquet from late sunday night until quite late monday afternoon things looked dark for the second year men the frosh started early to tie up the sophs and there were numerous fights in which the overwhelming num bers of the frosh seemed to make victory certain for them in taylor hall the frosh jail there were at least eighty soph omores tied up and there were almost as many more visiting in the country or on their way out in the company of the then dominant frosh the plans for the convention of the intercollegiate newspa per association of the middle atlantic states are being com pleted the convention will be held on friday and saturday may 14th and 15th at lehigh university there are twenty-three col leges in the association all of which will be represented speakers from new york and philadelphia papers are being selected to talk and give advice on both editorial and business management on friday an hour for regis tration from one till two p m will be allowed following this a business meeting will be held till five o'clock in drown hall a banquet starting at seven o'clock will round up the day for the guests on saturday morning another meeting both for business management and editorial work will be held from nine till twelve the guests will be provided with a lun cheon after which the officers for next year will be elected lehigh meets rutgers in what promises to be a closely-contest ed lacrosse game tomorrow af ternoon at 3:30 on the upper field rutgers will come to bethlehem with a clean slate having won all of its three games this season lehigh has a less-imposing record having but one victory and two defeats to its credit however the brown and white team is im proving steadily as evidenced by its strong fight with prince ton last saturday in its last game the suicide squad was minus the services of oddy at goal and baker and enscoe on the attack baker will be avail able for tomorrow's game but injuries will keep oddy and enscoe on the sidelines it was quite noticeable that the brown and white attack was working more smoothly against princeton than against n y u a few new ideas have been introduced this week and they will have a chance to prove their worth against rut gers house party and its bevy of feminiity should prove an added incentive to the stick wielders notice the senior class program and invitation committee has selected programs and invita tions samples will be on dis play beginning monday at 2 p m in drown hall orders will be taken until friday eve ning but none will be received later tomorrow at three o'clock the varsity tennis team will be seen in action against the uni versity of pennsylvania netmen on the bethlehem steel course the match promises to be an interesting one as the visitors have three of the leading inter collegiate players on their team despite this fact pennsylvania lost its first match of the sea son to princeton by a score of five to four continued on page four the brown and white net men have only opposed the na val academy team so far this season in which match they were beaten by a seven to two score however this is no in dication of the team's strength as they were in poor form due a competition for business manager of the 1930 epitome will start wednesday may 4th all next year's sophomores who wish to enter the competi tion report at drown hall in the burr room at 4 o'clock in cidently it might be well to say that business manager of the epitome is one of the biggest positions at lehigh and is well worth having the competition will be run solely upon a point basis notice junior class selections for the senior year will be held next week the nominations will be made at a meeting to be held in coppee hall at noon tues day elections will occur theodore roosevelt continued on page four prof beaver next delivered a short and witty address on that most pressing of modern questions the chinese repub lic after a few preliminary remarks concerning the ban quet chairs and state of grace of his audience prof beaver reviewed briefly the economic condition of china attempted to unravel the present military situation and concluded by calling attention to the need for modern economic improvements continued on page four considering the excitement before the event the sophomore class did very well in regard to the success and numbers that attended their banquet from late sunday night until quite late monday afternoon things looked dark for the second year men the frosh started early to tie up the sophs and there were numerous fights in which the overwhelming num bers of the frosh seemed to make victory certain for them in taylor hall the frosh jail there were at least eighty soph omores tied up and there were almost as many more visiting in the country or on their way out in the company of the then dominant frosh the plans for the convention of the intercollegiate newspa per association of the middle atlantic states are being com pleted the convention will be held on friday and saturday may 14th and 15th at lehigh university there are twenty-three col leges in the association all of which will be represented speakers from new york and philadelphia papers are being selected to talk and give advice on both editorial and business management on friday an hour for regis tration from one till two p m will be allowed following this a business meeting will be held till five o'clock in drown hall a banquet starting at seven o'clock will round up the day for the guests on saturday morning another meeting both for business management and editorial work will be held from nine till twelve the guests will be provided with a lun cheon after which the officers for next year will be elected lehigh meets rutgers in what promises to be a closely-contest ed lacrosse game tomorrow af ternoon at 3:30 on the upper field rutgers will come to bethlehem with a clean slate having won all of its three games this season lehigh has a less-imposing record having but one victory and two defeats to its credit however the brown and white team is im proving steadily as evidenced by its strong fight with prince ton last saturday in its last game the suicide squad was minus the services of oddy at goal and baker and enscoe on the attack baker will be avail able for tomorrow's game but injuries will keep oddy and enscoe on the sidelines it was quite noticeable that the brown and white attack was working more smoothly against princeton than against n y u a few new ideas have been introduced this week and they will have a chance to prove their worth against rut gers house party and its bevy of feminiity should prove an added incentive to the stick wielders notice the senior class program and invitation committee has selected programs and invita tions samples will be on dis play beginning monday at 2 p m in drown hall orders will be taken until friday eve ning but none will be received later tomorrow at three o'clock the varsity tennis team will be seen in action against the uni versity of pennsylvania netmen on the bethlehem steel course the match promises to be an interesting one as the visitors have three of the leading inter collegiate players on their team despite this fact pennsylvania lost its first match of the sea son to princeton by a score of five to four continued on page four the brown and white net men have only opposed the na val academy team so far this season in which match they were beaten by a seven to two score however this is no in dication of the team's strength as they were in poor form due a competition for business manager of the 1930 epitome will start wednesday may 4th all next year's sophomores who wish to enter the competi tion report at drown hall in the burr room at 4 o'clock in cidently it might be well to say that business manager of the epitome is one of the biggest positions at lehigh and is well worth having the competition will be run solely upon a point basis notice junior class selections for the senior year will be held next week the nominations will be made at a meeting to be held in coppee hall at noon tues day elections will occur
