three cities the showing in york was the best in the history of the dramatic club the scarlet of rutgers was more prominent than the brown and lehigh on the upper field saturday afternoon when the track squads of the rival insti tutions met to determine supre macy for 1927 incidentally the boys from the raritan av enged their defeat of last season by out-scoring the home colle gians 70 1-2 to 55 1-2 continued on page two despite rather adverse con ditions such as a cold wind and a none-too-good track the meet was spiritedly contested and brought forth some thrilling competition and excellent per formances which kept the large sub-freshman day crowd chee ring until sun-down outstand ing were two races in which duffy aitken and ken chicker ing both cross country cap tains exemplified the tradition leading up to the ninth in ning after overcoming a four run lead the lehigh varsity ball nine lost to rutgers satur day in a ninth inning rally net ting the visitors two runs to win by the score of 8 to 7 pros pects of a brown and white vic tory seemed inevitable after the fifth frame and continued so till almost the close of the game when at the crucial moment ir win and hibbs of rutgers crashed through with two runs thereby deciding the fray the game showed a decided improve ment on the part of the lehigh team over their performance on the disastrous southern trip continued on page three after getting off to a rather dubious start lehigh rallied in the fifth singles by flynn hayes nevins o'callaghan and pi delta epsilon chooses members scabbard & blade holds open meet ten juniors elected to mem bership in journalistic honorary two army inspectors among those who spoke before large gathering after a very successful per formance in both bethlehem and allentown the mustard and cheese production mercy sakes traveled to philadel phia reading and york on its annual trip and played before large audiences in the major ity of these cities a record crowd of over 1700 people was in attendance at york and pro ved to be a most enthusiastic and appreciative audience continued on page three leaving bethlehem on wed nesday morning the members of the production went to phil adelphia and held a rehearsal in the afternoon at the perm a c in the evening the performance was very successfully given be fore more than 100 people at lehigh university calendar razz sheet on thursday pi delta ep silon held a meeting at which final plans were laid for the razz sheet to appear this friday this sheet will cer tainly attract a great deal of attention as it is the first time a publication of this na ture has ever appeared on the campus and it should prove to be one of the big features of house parties the members of pi delta ep silon have put a tremendous amount of effort into the pub lication of the paper which should be a great credit to the fraternity all the ar ticles in the paper will be anonymous some of them containing a great deal of ex cellent satire the success of the sheet is already practical ly assured by the fact that the fraternities have ordered forty to fifty copies apiece in advance all checks for this purpose should be sent to george kennedy at the sig ma phi epsilon house who is the business manager for the enterprise this week there will be an extensive campaign for sub scriptions to the paper at which time the newly elected members of pi delta epsilon will go around and secure subscriptions from the entire college it is expected that at least 1500 copies of the paper will be disposed of in this manner the editors hope to finance the paper by making sure of the circula tion in advance in case the last minute sale of the paper is abruptly prohibited moving-up day the moving-up day com mittee has completed plans for carrying out the custom that was instituted at lehigh last year the date has been set for may 7 and the cere monies will take place be tween the halves of the ste vens lacrosse game all seniors will carry the traditional cane on the week ending may 7 and will wear brown and white yachting caps which will be put on sale the latter part of this week sophomores will go coatless that week and will wear white shirts and flow ing brown artists ties on monday may 2 the fresh men will begin cutting sec tors out of their caps one section each day between the halves of the lacrosse game on saturday the sophomores will form a double line on the upper field and put the freshmen thru a gauntlet similar to the rush held the beginning of the year at the end of this line the freshmen will make a bonfire of their dinks and will be given pipes to begin smoking on the cam pus the seniors and jun iors will then each form a single line facing one anoth er the president of the seniors will present the pres ident of the juniors with his cane after which all seniors will hand over their canes to juniors it is very important that all classes give their utmost in cooperation with these plans in order to guarantee a successful continuance of this very worth-while tradi tion yearling batsmen conquer rutgers chemical society has convention overwhelm opponents by 8-2 count in initial fray this season once more the time for house parties draws near and again the committees in charge of the various events have gone to a great deal of trouble to give the fair visitors one enjoyable time after another thursday after noon marks the beginning of a string of entertainments that will culminate with dances at the various fraternity houses saturday night no announce ment has been made as yet re garding tea dances thursday afternoon but probably some will be arranged and an an nouncement will be made to that effect on thursday evening the sophomore cotillion will be the feature event dancing will con tinue from nine until two in the gym with music by the university of pennsylvania or chestra this orchestra is well known and should furnish some real music the gym will be tastefully decorated and this together with the music should make this year's cotillion one to be long remembered the chaperons will be dr and mrs carothers and captain and mrs rodman prices have dropped this year for the subscription is five dollars a couple and three dollars stag it has been customary for various houses to give tea danc es friday afternoon this year the sword and crescent society has arranged for a tea dance for that afternoon it will be held in drown hall from three to seven o'clock the commit tee has spent a great deal of time in decorating drown hall very beautifully and in a very original way the music will be furnished by louis cohen's orchestra which it will be re membered furnished the music at last year's junior prom and were very well received the price will be one dollar and a half a couple and one dollar stag continued on page four the biggest social event in every college is the junior prom and lehigh is no excep tion this year's prom will be held in the upper gym friday many lehigh men take part in discussions at sev enty-third meeting sub-freshman day held last saturday was a great success from all viewpoints there were over eighty prospective lehigh students present who were the representatives of a great number of different high and preparatory schools no single school had more than two or three men here over the week-end quite a few were prominent athletes of various schools who had been brought here by the alumni clubs of va rious cities after the sub-freshmen had registered the first event on the program was a luncheon in drown hall this was atten ded by all the guests the mem cyanide and popular members bers of sword and crescent of the administration an ex cellent luncheon was served by the members of the faculty women's club after the lunch a short meeting was held at which short talks were given by fred trafford okey percy wendell charlie eastman and bosey r a harrier took charge of the meeting and in troduced all the speakers with shprt talks immediately following the meeting the guests all watched either the baseball game or the track meet they were enter tained for dinner at the various fraternity houses and in the evening a great many attended the arcadia dance in drown hall all those who cared to stay here over night were the guests of the fraternities be fore the dance the glee club and mandolin club gave their premier concert in drown hall which was of a very excellent calibre the entire program for the week-end was worked out by sword and crescent with the members of cyanide helping to map out the actual details of the day a great deal of credit is owed to andy buchanan as sistant alumni secretary who communicated with the alumni clubs and persuaded them to bring prominent men from the various schools to visit lehigh lehigh nine again meets muhlenberg b wtennis team defeated by navy navy's well-balanced tennis team took all but two matches in their encounter with lehigh last saturday afternoon at an napolis although navy won 7-2 the one-sided score does not accurately tell the story of lehigh's premier attempt by the close playing four matches were forced into extra sets nd every one of these doubtful natches went to the midship nen the beautiful playing of farrin a brilliant navy ball hawk was instrumental in di verting lehigh's winning rally the navy netman after taking two sets from usher rather de aurinjly went into the doubles continued on page four the frosh baseball team pre vented a clean sweep by rut gers last saturday by deliver ing an impressive 8-2 victory the rutgers defeat was decisive and the entire yearling team showed up well in their initial tilt of the schedule the first ball was not pitched until the varsity teams had left three inch trench mortar describ ing the uses and the construc tion of the gun major jvtc cammon head of the r o t c unit at lehigh followed with a description of the phil lipines under pershing he told of a number of his exper iences there while fighting the moros and described the pecu liar guerilla warfare carried on by the phillipinos the last speaker was captain sanders of the bethlehem anti-aircraft battery national guards who spoke on the anti-aircraft service to illustrate his lec ture he brought with him sev eral of the instruments used by the battery in locating ene my airplanes the war department inspec tors major parker and major mclean who were inspecting the lehigh unit on thursday and friday were both present major parker was prevailed upon to say a few words on be half of the war department he said that both he and ma jor mclean were extremely well satisfied with the local unit and that they liked the college itself very much re freshments were then served and the chemical profession in the section of the history of chemistry c j brockman 21 gave an address on the life of richard kirwan a chemist who lived between the years 1733 and 1812 dr j s long of the
