on june 21 lehigh university received a telegram from ad jutant general mccain in the form sent out on that date to a number of the universities and colleges of the country outlining a plan for sixty days training camps from july 18 to september 16 for selected students and fac ulty members to be trained to act as instructors to help officers as signed to carry on military in struction at the institutions under this plan lehigh was re quested to send one student for each ten students in attendance last year and one faculty member for each one hundred students the telegram further directed that the men selected should be of the highest type physically and mentally and with most capacity for leadership that they must be citizens and men who expected to return to college this fall that they would be under temporary enlistment for sixty days when they would be discharged that they would receive housing uni form subsistence equipment and military instruction at govern ment expense and also the pay of a private thirty dollars per month and transportation copies of this telegram were at once sent to all the student body about one hundred and thirty ap plications for appointment were received the faculty selected seventy-one names from those sub mitted the attendance last year having been seven hundred and ten professor reiter at his re quest was sent as a faculty mem ber our men took the training and are now returning to college on the close of the camp on the sixteenth the university has entered into a contract with the government for the establishment here this this year of a unit of the student . army training corps a com manding officer from the army will be detailed to take command of the corps with such subordin ate officers as the war department shall determine and assign it is expected that this will go into effect about october first when our students will be inducted as soldiers into the u s army the university organization will go on as before the educational work being unfter the charge and over sight of the president and fac ulty the commanding officer will have charge of the military ex ercises and discipline of the stu dents so inducted into service they will be furnished by the gov ernment free of charge with sub sistence quarters and uniforms and will be paid thirty dollars per month from the date when the military organization shall be perfected the authorized articles of clothing to be furished by the government for the students will be : 1 overcoat 1 service hat 1 hat cord 2 coats cotton 2 shirts woolen 2 breeches cotton 1 belt 1 pair leggins canvas 1 pair leggins laces 1 pair shoes 1 pair shoe laces 2 under shirts 2 woolen drawers 3 pair stockings woolen uniforms will be author ized for issue as soon as the gov eminent supply of the same per mits and units will be supplied in the order determined by geograph ical location and climatic condi tions the government also fur nishes arms and if needed cots and bedding the university contracts for a stipulated price per man per day which the government pays to furnish the subsistence quarters and tuition of the students the students — so inducted as soldiers — will be under military discipline and training and a student so serving will have the satisfaction of feeling that while pursuing his educational training he is serving as a soldier all members of the s a t c will be subject to call to active service at any time by the war department it is intimated that students of medicine chemistry and engineering will be likely to be held at their educational work longer than students in the art courses by circular issued august 28 by the war department committee on education and special train ing and addressed to the colleges of the united states it is stated all young men who were planning to go to school this fall should carry out their plans and do so each should go to the col lege of his choice matriculate and enter as a regular student he will eff course also register with his local board on the registration day set by the president as soon as possible after registration day probably on or about october 1 opportunity will be given for all the regularly enrolled students to be inducted into the students army training corps at the schools where they are in attend ance thus the corps will be or ganized by voluntary induction under the selective service act instead of by enlistment as pre viously contemplated the student by voluntary in duction becomes a soldier in the united states army uniformed subject to military at lehigh which took place in drown memorial hall last saturday night the whole evening was characterized by that who are you and i'm glad to know you spirit of new men get ting acquainted which is expressly what this reception is for friend ships were started which may last through life hand clasps that meant help and comradship through the months of hard study ahead and a graver spirit per vaded even the speeches as a result of the coming crisis m a manley 19 president of the y m c a had charge of ceremonies and introduced dr h s drinker as first speaker dr drinker extended a cordial wel come to all the men to come to his home or to his office at any time of the day or night if anyone needed help be earnest and conscien tious in your college work get a fly ing start and don't lose a day particularly this year which will be harder than ever before he referred to lehigh s share in the war pointing out the work done at iiie ivliliiary training camps during 1913 14 15 and 16 in which we had a prominent part lehigh men are in cantonements all over the country many of them are at the front and we have lost some brave fellows he then ex plained as much as is known about the s a t c movement which will be instituted by the govern ment during october dr drinker concluded with a repetition of his plea that the men come to see him self or dr emery when they are in any trouble be close to us keep in touch and don't hesitate we are only too glad and we love to be of service at this point pres manley gave the new men some good advise to the effect that they should get in touch with lehigh s y m c a let us make it what it means in the army frank miller one of bethlehem's talented violinists rendered three excellent selections accompanied by mrs miller * k m bevier . 19 president of the senior class and the next speaker explained the honor sys tem its method of working and the formation and duties of the arcadia to the new men he urged that each man should con sider himself responsible for the working out of this system which without every man's co-operation can only be a failure miss anna estes then favored the appreciative audience with several of her vocal solos scoring a decided hit with everyone present mr justin williams ac companied 11 r bosey reiter profes sor of physical education at le high was the next speaker and as usual he opened with his custom ary flowery remarks so dear to the hearts of all lehigh men he in troduced the men to the spirits now floating around the campus the first spirit is hard study the university is going to main tain the same high standards that she has in the past the govern ment needs good men and she is continued on third page owing to the fact that several of the men who were on the brown and white board last year have entered the service there are sev eral vacancies to be filled there are at present two vacan cies on the junior board four vacancies on the sophomore board and six vacancies on the freshman board men whether they have or have not had experience in this line are urged to enter the competition for these positions it is necessary that these vacan cies be filled in order to facilitate the work of the board f d nawrath editor-in-chief of the brown and white will meet candidates for these positions at 1 o'clock saturday in the brown and white room drown memorial hall it is serve our country while pur suing your studies all the land is alive with patriotic feeling and ef fort dreadful as is this war in the loss of precious lives and in the waste of rniaterial resources — al ready we can see how it is regener ating our land bringing us closer together effacing selfish and party aims solidly uniting the nation in a twentieth century crusade for the right and for the freedom of man historians teacbi us how the cru sades of past ages f orw t arded ' the civilization of our ancestors in europe by bringing home from the east lessons of refinement and cul ture strange to the west this cru sade of the nineteenth century in which our west goes east reverses the lesson for with our allies we are striving to teach the savage hun that the ideals ofi today are those of christianity and freedom and to put an end forever to the rule of brutal oppression and savage onslaught america's stand in this war fol lowing our unselfish attitude in freeing cuba twenty years ago is absolutely altruistic and conceived on a high plane of duty to our fel low-men and a recognition of the call to which we now the greatest nation on earth should respond — to give of our all to the great cause for which with our allies we are battling you young men and all our youthof the nation feel the de sire to be up and doing in this cause and until our government issued its specific present call to iif young college men of our land there was naturally uncertainty as to where your duty should lead you we have had from the very entrance of our nation into the war appeals from the president the secretary of war the chief of en gineers the superintendent of west point academy and from that great soldier and apostle of the doctrine of preparedness gen eral leonard wood to our young men to complete their training and educational preparation so that they might be able to give the nation efficient service as trained men rather than crude service born only of the enthusiastic and patriotic desire to serve and you will perhaps remember how presi dent wilson enforced this lesson in the words of his proclamation of may 18 1917 when he reminded us that while the nation needs all its men and its women in this time it needs each man not in the field that will most pleasure him but in the endeavor that will best serve the common good thus mr wilsca said though a sharp shooter pleases to operate a trip hammer for the forging of great guns and an expert machinist de sires to march with the flag the nation is being served only when the sharpshooter marches and the machinist remains at his levers the whole nation must be a team in which each man shall play the part for which he is best fitted ' ' wise wards which i have before quoted to you older lehigh men but which cannot be recalled too vften for they sum up our whole duty today and now by letter ad dressed on july 31st last by the president to the secretary of the interior on the question of our national duty in the matter of edu cation during the war m]r wilson has said : i am pleased to know that de spite the unusual burdens imposed upon our people by the war they have maintained their schools and other agencies of education so nearly at their normal efficiency that this should be continued throughout the war and 1 that in so far as the draft law will permit there should be no falling off in at tendance in elementary schools high schools or colleges is a matter of the very greatest importance affecting both out strength in war and our national welfare and ef ficiency when the war is over so long as the war continues there will be constant need of very large numbers of men and women of the highest and most thorough training for war service in many lines after the war there will be urgent need not only for trained leader ship in all lines of industrial com mercial social and civic life but for a very high average of intelli gence and preparation on the part of all the people i would there fore urge that the people continue to give generous support to their schools of all grades and that the schools adjust themselves as wisely as possible to the new conditions to the end that no boy or girl shall have less opportunity for education because of the war and that the nation may be strengthened as it can only be through the right edu cation of all its people " we will do well to heed the words cf our leaders it is not a time for grandstand plays nor for the gratification of personal or in dividual preferences for action veiled under a patriotic desire to serve but a time for careful sober massing of our resources in men and material to the end that our whole national strength may be best applied and now our government has given you the young intelligent school and college will be upheld as in previous years there has been some question raised as to just how this practice will work along with the military drill of student preparing for the s a t c un til october first the two will be held distinct from each other ex cept that the football men are tem porarily excused from drill with the understanding that it is to be made up later as the preliminary work now underway on the upper field is essential after october first the govern ment will take control and it is a matter of conjecture as to what will actually happen however there are strong indications that the military drill will occur from 7.30 to 9.30 in the morning having the afternoons free for sports it is still a matter of great contro versy and at this jime no definite conclusions have been reached anyway football practice and the schedule will go on as planned un titoctober first after that it is doubtful but with good indications that the sport will finish the sea son the freshman class has brought forth an unusual lot of good ma terial this year also there are seven varsity men back this year also there are four men who played on the second team out on the gridiron for work
