by the athletic committee at its first meeting of the year held last sat urday afternoon in taylor gym thirty-six letters were awarded eleven to the members of the base ball team sixteen to the lacrosse team and nine to the track team the athletic committee did not effect its permanent organization for the year at its first meeting due to the fact that its personnel is not yet complete the hold its first meeting of the year on thursday at 7 45 p.m in the parish house of the nativity all students of lehigh who are episco palians are invited to attend this meeting cheering practice tuition and other fees must be paid the bursar of the university an nounces that tuition room rent and all laboratory fees as well as bal ances from last year must be paid by october 1 the first cheering practice of the year will be held wednesday at 4.00 p.m on taylor field this is the opportunity for the new men to become familiar with the lehigh yells a big attendance is desired as there is very little time to do much practicing this year candidates for the position of cheer leader will report to j h wagner y m c a cabinet meeting new explosive saves glycerin the y m c a cabinet met last saturday afternoon in drown hall to discuss the business of the com ing year owing to the fact that several men of the cabinet have not returned this year new men will be elected in the near future to fill their places snice the student body will be under military discipline a large enrollment in the association is ex pected this year as it has been proved in the army camps to be one of the main sources of recreation the committee has therefore planned interesting meetings and entertainments for the year and a large attendance at these functions will be looked for the first meet ing will be sunday evening at 6 15 in drown hall and as it will be the only meeting before the govern ment takes hold of things every body that can do so is requested to be on hand opening of the brown and white football season which was scheduled for saturday may pos sibly be delayed owing to difficulty in arranging a game it was hoped that the naval aviation team at bay shore l 1 or the team from the battleship arkansas would be obtained but these service teams could play only mid-week games the management is trying hard to find a suitable opponent for the opening date but is meeting with trouble on account of the earliness in the season and unsettled con ditions among other colleges that lehigh will be represented by a football team this year is practically certain as captain van atta 1921 try out for this posi tion the names of two more lehigh men have been placed upon that great roll of honor which already bears the names of loyal patriots wiho have given their all for the sake of humanity and democracy delozier davidson and edward c davidson were killed a little more than a month apart by aeroplane accidents delozier davidsoni was a me chanical engineer of the class of 15 he was an ensign in the u s naval aviation attachment and was acting as an instructor and as sitsant chief pilot at a u s naval aviation school in france the fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of august 14 1918 on the lake near which the school is located in france davidson had taken two students up with him and was flying over the lake at a height of about 500 feet as he banked the machine steeply on a turn he got into a side slip and he was flying so low that he could not properly right the machine before it struck the lake killing all its oc cupants a swift patrol was immediately sent out upon the lake and re covered the bodies about twenty mdnutes later davidson was still in ' his seat showing that he had stuck till the last in an effort to save his companions other men from the school who witnessed the accident declared that he had taken the right steps to readjust hist machine and that if he had not been flying at so low an altitude he would have had no trouble for davidson was considered one of the best flyers in the school and had dealt with machines under similar conditions before he was buried in a little ceme tery at lacanan france flyers acted as pallbearers at the funeral and'&eroplanes followed the funeral procession all the way to the ceme tery dropping flowers davidson s loss was keenly felt for he was very popular with all the men in camp an officer said i have lost my best instructor and as a friend the finest boy i ever knew ' ' delozier davidson will never be forgotten at lehigh he was a tau beta pi man and senior athletic representative he also played football and baseball on his class teams and held a place on the track squad for four years delozier as well as his brother edward was a member of the kappa alpha so ciety edward c davidson jr be longed to the class of 18 and en listed as a private in the 27th di vision of the new york state national guards on august 11 1917 later in the year he trans ferred to the aviation section of the signal corps he won his wings and was commissioned as a second lieutenant the following newspaper article appeared in a houston tex paper under date of september 17 1918 continued on fourth page first lieutenant r f gillette hartford conn chief observer second provisional wing and the oil paint and drug re porter mentions a new explosive being tested by the government which will save a considerable amount of glycerin it is called nitrobyronel and is the product of dr byron e eldred it is claimed that it blows a chamber twice the size of that caused by t n t trinitrotoluol in the manufac ture of ~ nitrobyronel neither nitro glycerin nor toluol is used it is a hydrocarbon obtained by a by-pro duct in coke-oven processes it is estimated that 50,000,000 pounds of glycerin are used in american industrial concerns and a big saving in this important ma terial now growing scarce can be effected through the employment of nitrobyronel if a shortage of glycerin should become imminent the oil paint and drug reporter believes that the government would promptly start in to manufacture nitroby ronel bonds buy food for soldiers buy liberty bonds money means munitions buy liberty bond's lehigh uni versity south bethlehem pa and on october first enroll in the naval section of the student army train ing corps students subject to draft desiring to enroll not exceeding five hundred at university of pennsylvania and sixty at lehigh university these men must be in ducted by draft boards concerned forms and written instructions follow give greatest publicity sgd mansfield will you c is a move by the government and was not asked for by the colleges men were lirged to go to college and take a combined military and collegiate training ' ' there are normally two groups in the collegiate world the men taking b.a and b.s courses and the men taking technical courses the annnounced policy of the war department is to consider the rfijen taking the b.a and b.s courses in three classes mien twenty years old men nineteen years old and men eighteen years did the average course for men twenty years old will last three months for those nineteen years old six months and for the men mshte^n years old nine months these men in the s a t c will not be called for active service any sooner than men of their age under the draft upon the completion of their training they may be dis posed of in one of five ways as was outlined in the last issue of the brown and white the student may be directed to continue his course of studies by the war de partment the second group in college the engineering and chemical students will continue their course as now scheduled the faculty is awaiting for suggestions from the war de partment concerning the establish ment of two-year courses an 45 who had registered on septem ber 12 and had matriculated at lehigh special forms are being sent from washington for the use of men over 21 the men must also have the necessary physical qualifications to place them in either general or limited service on october 1 at noon the stu dents together with the men from camp coppee will assemble at the flag pole on the campus the flag will classes mien twenty years old men nineteen years old and men eighteen years did the average course for men twenty years old will last three months for those nineteen years old six months and for the men mshte^n years old nine months these men in the s a t c will not be called for active service any sooner than men of their age under the draft upon the completion of their training they may be dis posed of in one of five ways as was outlined in the last issue of the brown and white the student may be directed to continue his course of studies by the war de partment the second group in college the engineering and chemical students will continue their course as now scheduled the faculty is awaiting for suggestions from the war de partment concerning the establish ment of two-year courses an nouncement concerning these courses will be made as soon as re ceived ' ' dr blake head of the arts and science courses announced that he would meet the 8.a the b.s and business administration students this afternoon at 4 o'clock in coppee hall captain a g van atta com mandant at lehigh university announced that the men eligible for the s a t c were those who were between the ages of 18 and 45 who had registered on septem ber 12 and had matriculated at lehigh special forms are being sent from washington for the use of men over 21 the men must also have the necessary physical qualifications to place them in either general or limited service on october 1 at noon the stu dents together with the men from camp coppee will assemble at the flag pole on the campus the flag will be raised to colors played and the orders of the day read by captain van atta at the same time all over the united states the same thing will be done at every college where there is an s a t c unit
