memorial unveiled more men pledged this year than formerly from large fresh man class mayor arch johnston and judge butler of west chester pa at the meeting the personnel of captain van atta s staff of commissioned offi cers who are to have charge of the lehigh unit of the s a t c has been completed with the arrival last week of nine second lieuten ants from the plattsburg training camp the staff includes eleven commissioned officers in addition to the five commissioned officers at present stationed at camp coppee captain a g van atta of indiana is to be commanding offi cer of the lehigh unit including both the students at the university and the men taking vocational training at camp coppee first lieutenant s a skelton formerly an instructor at the platsburg training camp is the adjutant meeting next saturday afternoon the first football game of the season will be played on taylor field ursinus being the opponents the original intention of opening the season on september 28 was abandoned only because of inability to secure a suit able team to oppose the brown and white grid men last year the ursinus game re sulted in a 13-7 victory for lehigh the ursinus eleven being exception ally strong thus far this season the collegeville team has palyed but one game being defeated 66-0 by rutgers last saturday practice during the past week has done much to develop the lehigh team and it has rounded into shape very well both signal work and scrimmage were held last week the cool clear weather aiding materi ally in the work two squads picked of the most promising candidates will be organ ized soon for scrimmage in this way coach keadiy will be able to select the team which is to face ursinus on saturday as to the backfield it is almost a certainty that wysocki will carry the back field burdens with heinzelman the easton high star on one side of him and either ray dowd sam webb or gus savaria taking care of the other backfield position nolan will most likely drive the squad at quarterback with pfeiffer saxman booth spagna and goldman on the line these men have been showing up very well lately but the lineup for the game is still uncertain the ursinus team has been greatly hampered this year the only veteran being captain paul isenberg at fullback the rest of the team is made up largely of freshmen the probable ursinus lineup will be as follows moser left end fullback last friday at 4.00 p.m en sign h g bauer u s n met the men of the naval section in the gymnasium he outlined the work which the unit would do a course in engineering will be established at lehigh which is recognized in washington the course will consist of eight periods of three months no promise can be made as to the length of time which a man will remain at lehigh the demand for men will affect this every three months there will be a critical period if a man is not up in his work he will be drop ped and given the rating to which he is fitted the behavior of a man will count as well as his work after a man has successfully completed the equivalent of the two year course he will be sent to pelham bay for four weeks navy regulation drill and signalling will be given there a man will then be advanced to chief machinists mate and sent to steven's institute at hoboken for forty days intensive study the first ten days will be devoted to boilers the second ten to marine engines the third to auxiliary en gines and the fourth to complete marine plants two weeks will be spent on trips in the harbor of new york the first week on ferryboats and the second on sound and river steamers a man is then given the rank of warrant machinist and spends two weeks in new york shop where marine engines are constructed after this a man awaits _ assign ment for an overseas cruise on this cruise he is in charge of a watch and as such is a marine op erating engineer upon the completion of this cruise he spends four weeks at ho boken answering practical ques tions a commission of understandi ing of freshmen regulations the president first announced that there would be no founder's day sports this year this action was taken due to the fact that all holidays are to be-utilize^l for work and study inasmuch as the students are being rushed through their courses as soon as possible it was also learned that the freshmen through the leniency of the other classes are permitted to go out alone on friday saturday and sunday nights another matter discussed was whether or not freshmen should wear hats on sundays after foun der's day since it would be the thirteenth of october before they would have an opportunity to dis card their fresh caps on sunday it was decided to wear them that day to avoid discussion if the army uni forms had not arrived by that time r w ludlow managing editor of the bronw and white was then introduced to make an announce ment he desired to interest the freshmen to enter the contest for reporters on the brown and white the contest will be the launching of the fourth liberty loan drive saturday september 28 following the parade in the afternioon a large crowd gathered at the foot of the college flag-pole where a platform had been erected for the occasion mayor arch johnston presided and the gathering w t as addressed by judge butler of west chester who has but recently returned from the front visiting the american armies the invocation was pronounced by the rev james robinson of the first presbyterian church of bethlehem mayor johnston said in part : truly the nation is at a great crisis the world's eyes are fas tened on the united states as she fights in this great war the people of the country are fortunate in having such a wonderful man at the helm a man in whom we can place our full confidence andi be sure that everything will be done in exactly the right way all political feeling has ceased 1 and the nation works as one the army is composed of two divisions the men at the front and the people at home backing them one is as important as the other without the second the first would fail it will require sacrifices from us at home but these are nothing compared to those which are made at the front every day we are not only in this war to • restore belgium and alsace lor j raine but to restore to the world liberty and freedom the address of judge butler fol lows : this day the opening of the fourth liberty loan drive is of particular interest to you people as residents of bethlehem where is lo cated the great bethelhem steel company which is furnishing our boys over there with guns and munitions ' ' the kaiser had a dream of world power others who have gone before him in history had simi lar dreams tout they all failed and the kaiser will fail also germany can't win because it would be wrong for her to win god will not permit it for they invaded and de stroyed countries they promised not to touch the war may be over next year but it may take ten years if every man does not put his shoul der to the wheel and push the boys from pennsylvania j are stationed near soissons they are the men who drove the bodies back along the vesle their faces may disappear but their names will live forever in contrast to the brutality of the enemy the kind ness and consideration of our soldiers is conspicuous our armies appear not only i valiant but unconquerable and the | spirit of the men hem the music was rendered by the kappa sigma orchestra there were twenty couples present and the affair was a big success enlist as our soldiers do buy bonds and keep them the junior class at a witenssing the organization of a new and powerful instrument for the winning of the w t ar — the stu dents army training corps the patriotism of american educa tional institutions is demonstrated to the world by the effective and convincing manner in which they are supporting this far-reaching plan to hasten the mobilization and training of the armies of the united states 2 it is most fitting that this day winch will be remembered in american history should be ob continued on fourth page the formal institution of the students army training corps units throughout the country at all universities and colleges at which they have been established took place by order of the war depart ment at 12 o'clock noon eastern time yesteiday at lehigh uni versity the exercises took place at the flagpole on the campus a detachment of the bethlehem steel company band opened the exercises with the star spangled banner while the flag was raised the oath of allegiance to the flag was read by the
