and classes to be held until june ketball call few men respond to first bas lieutenant aeschbach former lehigh professor speaks on nervous system of army at yale radio school discusses elaborate system of communication used in war expenses are heavy and finan cial adjustment uncertain the call for candidates for the basketball team went up december 4 but it was not responded to as well as it might have been there is a good opportunity for men with basketball ability coupled with le high interest to make the team and everybody with these qualifications is strongly urged to come out in terest in basketball is undoubtedly shaded by the impending demobili zation but by the end of the week everyone who intends to come out should have reported to practices manager wolfe has not completed his schedule but hopes to do so in the near future when it will be published in the brown and white from last year's team we have wysocki 20 who is temporarily out of the game with a broken arm ; straub 20 savaria 21 and ketcham 20 on which to build second string men andl,l2xts,ogkj this year's team and with the aid of last year's second string men and incoming freshmen a good team ought to be produced scoring record of football men the following letter has beem sent to the students and their parents by president drinker out lining the plans of the university for the remainder of this col legiate year december 10 1918 to students and to the parents and guardians of students attending lehigh university of course you appreciate that the future training of our students in view of the discon tinuance by the government of the students army training corps has been and is a matter of profound interest and care on the part of the faculty they have given careful thought to the matter and their conclusion is voiced in the enclosed statement of course the introduction of mil itary training and of the special courses of education requested by the war department during the past autumn disorganized the reg ular work of the university the students were being prepared in tensively for military service now t1"t 1 " t ' : * ended 1 and it i desirable that the student body swing back as soon asi possible into their regu lar professional preparation it is the opinion of the faculty that by carefully managed intensive work during the remainder of the present scholastic year continuing up to the end of june students who are prepared to do steady and efficient work can be put in shape to go on with their regular classes niext year — that is a fireshmatn entering this year ought to be ready to go on with his sophomore work a sophomore with junior work and a junior with senior work the enclosed action is sent you for consideration during the christmas holidays during this holiday our students will have an opportunity for full rest and con ference and should come back in january ready for effective work during the balance of the year the regular four-year sehedulejs have been re-established the charge for tuition will be the difference between the pub lished rates 2oo for engineering courses 150 for b.s courses and 100 for the b.a course and the payment already made by the students or made by the govern ment on tuition account general living expenses room board etc must of course be borne by the student after his discharge from government service henry s drinker president individual scoring records of the lehigh football team for the season of 1918 show that dowd was the leading scorer with a total of 39 points to his credit including six touchdowns and a goal from the field savaria stood second with four touchdowns and was closely followed by captain wysocki with two touchdowns demobilization of soldier chemists during the present week most of the 200,000 young privates in stu dents army training corps at the various universities and colleges throughout the country will change back into mufti and resume their pursuit of jabs money or erhidition while students are laying aside their khaki hundreds of officers de tailed by the war department to instruct them will be moving out of fraternity houses and clubs where they have been quartered pro fessors and instructors will be gathering together the remnants of shattered academic courses pre paratory to resuming the curricu lum which prevailed before bayo net exercises superseded psy chology at the same time uni versity treasurers and boards of trustees will be busy over the books of the institutions to determine what has happened to finances as the result of the commandeering of the colleges of the nation in practically every college in the east it is the expressed de termination of the faculty to make up lost time in the remainder of the college year so that students will find themselves next june or july just as near their degrees as if they had never spent two months in the army subjects which have been crowded from the curriculum by drill hours or by topics pre scribed by the committee on educa tion and special training of the war department will now be studied intensively and for longer hours than is usual estimates concerning the num ber of present members of the s a t c who will remain in the col leges when they are put on a peace basis range from 40 to 80 per cent in some colleges there are what is known as vocational section men these men were picked out at the various camps to which they had been drafted and were sent to the institutions for training in various war trades such as pho tography radio operating etc most of these will return immedi ately to their former civilian po sitions the other section of the corps consisted of boys of 18 or more who would probably have at tended college whether this country had been at war or not these will for the most part remain at tendance at college this year will be below the average of former years according to present indica tions in dark on finances financially the colleges are very much in the dark the govern ment in cancelling its s a t c contracts promised equitable fi nancial adjustment ' ' but just what this means is not known even to the professors of of mathematics of the various institutions so far heads of colleges agree the gov ernment has been entirely just and even generous concerning money matters tuition and other ex penses of the students have been paid by the government and in ad short terms seem to be favored by many of the colleges students not to lose time dition each student has received the regular pay of a private upon their discharge from the training corps the students who remain will of course pay tuition in the ordi nary manner if few students re main and the government does not provide adequately colleges may find themselves in straitened cir cumstances the war will leave its permanent trace on many colleges not only through bronze tablets containing names of fallen students but also in the curriculum itself indica tions now point to the establish ment of many reserve officers train ing camps in the universities demobilization of the students army training corps at columbia began saturday when one of the ten companies of students was dis banded one each day will be mus tered out until december 16 when it is expected that all boys will be civilians again the organization at columbia consisted of 2,218 men including a navy unit of 370 men the war department has ordered complete demobilization by december 21 colirr.bia college at the present time has approximately 400 stu dents who by reason of physical defects lack of years dependency or other causes did not enter the s a t c it is upon this skeleton framework that the academic body of the past will be built although columbia may show a gain of several hundred students over the figures of last year if half the s a t c boys remain the university as a whole has suffered herbert e hawkins dean of columbia college has suggested an extra term of four weeks starting january 7 in which short courses will be given designed to precede certain courses on the curriculum for the spring term in cases where military work has interfered with academic requirements for a de gree adjustment will be made ac cording to the dean's plan credit will be given for the special term courses to the city college belongs the palm for rapid reorganization al though the demobilization of the s a t c unit of 1,350 men began only a day or two ago the authori ties have already organized a term of eight weeks starting monday which will entirely compensate for the time lost in military training dr paul saurel acting dean of the college said that 800 of the 1,350 boys in the s a t c had notified the authorities that they would attend the short term in addition the college has 750 boys under 18 or physically unfit who have been taking the regular civilian course no boys will be taken in from outside the students army corps for this short course said dr saurel our intention is to give the boys an eight week term spend ing double the usual time on about half the usual number of subjects in february we will receive boys from high schools as usual the board of trustees and the faculty are now considering the es tablishment of a r o t c unit at the city college physical train ing has always been emphpasized in the city college curriculum and it may be that the work will be continued on consider the question of continuing the skip stop system on philadelphia trol ley lines mr ainey is frequently called on to be the leading figure in the settlement of disputes be tween public service corporations and the public in the state of pennsylvania to expedite demobilization of soldier chemists chemists now in military service who desire to re turn to chemical industry are be ing requested to inform the chief of the industrial relations branch concerning their future prospects and manufacturers are being asked to designate their requirements for chemists the administration of this work will be carried out by the industrial relations branch and information may be obtained by writing to major allen rogers chief industrial relations branch chemical warfare service 7th and b streets n w washington d c realizing that the unusual con ditions which have arisen this year through the introduction of mili tary work into the university have prevented many of the new men from learning exactly what are the college traditions and customs the brown and white takes this op portunity to print the rules and regulations which govern the new men it is hoped that these rules and regulations first meeting last fri day evening in the physics build ing the meeting was opened in the usual manner and the minutes from the previous meeting read and approved as lieutenant aeshbach a former professor at lehigh had to leave unexpectedly for yale where he is an instructor in the radio school he was given the floor immediate . hit io was a most interesting one the nervous system of the army ' ' he spoke as follows : as a whole this nervous system or communication system of the army is of the utmost im portance for discussion we will take the division as that is the smallest fighting unit which con tains all the arms of the service —~ infantry artillery machine gun corps engineers signal corps sup ply trains military police tanks and airplanes however it must be borne in mind that every branch is used wholly to back up the in fantry in battle orders are trans ferred through five mediums chief signal officer depot bat talions field signal corps and telegraph signal corps at the beginning of the war there were practically no men in any of these branches and very few officers so throughout the country training schools have sprung up that have supplied trained men in a remark ably short time in the division there are three separate nets or communication systems totally independent of one another and every precaution is taken to keep them so even to the use of red wire for artillery and black for the other systems these are the command net used for com mand only the artillery net and the radio or airplane and tank net the command net is probably the most elaborate and permanent it extends from the field army headquarters situated many miles to the rear through the advanced central brigade headquarters and 1 forward central to the trench phones from the field army headquarters to the advanced central the line is carried on poles and is more or less permanent from the advanced central to the brigade headquarters and ad vanced central the line is buried at a depth of perhaps three or four feet from this point on the earth is continually torn up and a wire line could not be maintained for this reason two wires are grounded a short distance apart and the dif ference in potential is sufficient to transmit messages to and from the trenches this is merely a skeleton of the system there is a balloon station artillery station with its unites and several
