club to meet the arts and science club will hold its initial meeting at coppee hall next friday night january 31 1919 at 8 p.m a good pro gram has been provided for the evening it includes an illustrated lecture on spain by professor fox and an adress by professor blake due to many interruptions this past fall the club was unable hitherto to hold any meetings the office of treasurer is still vacant and an election will be held to fill this position all b.a and b.s men in cluding the business men are eligible to membership in the club this includes the freshmen class the club offers an unusual oppor tunity for men in the above courses to meet one another in a social way and it is hoped that there will be a large attendance eats and smokes are to be part of the program the first meeting of the year of the mining engineering society will be held in williams hall thursday evening at 8.15 o'clock this meeting will be of special importance as its well arranged programs show lieut fenster macher 18 who has been at camp hancock ga ; fort williams me ; columbus barracks ohio and camp zachary taylor for the past eighteen months will give an in teresting talk on the army life as he has seen it at these earnus the second speaker for the evening w r ill be b cory 20 who spent one year in italy with the italian army and six months in france with the french army cory will tell of the army life as he found it in italy and france the important business to be transacted at this meeting will be the election of a vice-president all new students of mining courses are especially invited and urged to attend this meeting eats swimmers report on friday epitome board wants more photographs senior classbook to contain several new features letters sent to men not in college lehigh to be represented with tank team during coming all candidates for the swimming team will report on friday janu ary 31 to l b geis 19 at 4.00 p.m in the trophy room of the gym it is hoped that a large number of men will report the squad will be under the direction of b h rigg 19 and oscar lewine 20 with the equipment which lehigh has a good team should be de veloped meets are being arranged with other teams in this section of the country delaware college game at home on wednesday evening janu ary 29 at 8 o'clock delaware col lege will meet the varsity basket ball team in taylor gym dela ware college is said to have a good team and a lively game is expected the chances of the lehigh five to come out on top again appear favorable prof miller speaks the large universities of the country have for many years not only endeavored to meet the needs of matriculated students but also sought to stimulate the intellectual life of their vicinity through courses open to non-matriculated students lehigh has for more than ten years pursued this policy in a conservative manner con stantly increasing her influence and service one of the many extension courses which lehigh university offers to public school teachers to obtain extra credits and of which good use is being made is the course in geology quite a number of school teachers both men and women from bethlehem easton and al lentown are now taking this course it consists of extensive field trips under prof miller geology is taken up in general and emphasis is being laid on the local geologic structure when the weather will not permit field tri^s an indoor course in lectures on general geology and laboratory work in mineralogy is substituted professor stewart has this year opened a new field of extension work in the city of harrisburg each monday he meets a group of over two hundred men and women including not only the teachers of the city but also many business and professional men a smaller group meets him for graduate study in the evening in scranton professor luch conducts under the auspices of the extension courses a highly successful class in public speaking attended by over forty business and professional men of that city classes in french are held by professor toohy in mauch chunk bethlehem and nazareth pro fessor fox holds a class in coppee hall in advanced latin and pro fessor miller has a good sized class in geology it is a phase of ex tension work also that has just been put on foot in the parish house of the church of the nativity in which some fifty or more people of bethlehem meet to hear topics of intellectual and practical importance discussed all chemists out on thursday evening ! work on the 1920 epiitoime is progressing ratpidly many inno vations are being added this year and from present repors the book will be the best that has ever been issued the athletic section is aisi com plete asi possible at this time of the year the university and fraternity sections are also nearly complete the bag feature section this year will be thait of the s a t 0 the record of the first four months of the college year will be contained in this section the epitome board is still de sirous 1 oif having pictures submit ter for consideration information concerning the submission of pict tures has been announced the claissbook committee has sent letters to a,w members of the class of 1919 not in college class ballots were enclosed and it is hoped that a large number of the men will enter the clasisbook the piboitographsi of the men in college will be secured in the next two weeks it is hoped that the seniors will cooperate with the committeie by turning in ballots promptly while the plans of the committee have not been announc ed it is expected that several new features will be introduced into this year's claissbook university dance west point had an easy time winning from lehigh last satur day on the floor of the west point gym the final score was 27 to 17 the army put up a defense that was impregnable until well in the second half then feeling that the game was safe they put in several second-string men against whom lehigh seemed to be more success ful for several goals were made in quick succession the first half saw the cadets get ting away to a flying start over whelming lehigh with a shower of field goals cranston was at his best scoring four goals in this half the aggressive work of the army's guards kept the brown and white away from their basket making them resort to long passes the score at the end of the first hgjf stood 14 to 7 with the army on the long end army continued to gain on le high till a team of substitutes was put in when lehigh started to gain slowly the result was never in doubt however and the game ended with the army holding a ten-point lead cranston captain of the army team was easily the star of the game he was taken out in the second half only after he had made six goals from the field and as many fouls savaria was friday — berceuse kinder the first university dance of the year will be held in drown hall next saturday night febru ary 1 1919 at 8.30 o'clock lanin's orchestra from philadel phia will furnish the music this being the first dance of the year a large attendance is expected sub scription is 1.00 a couple no cutting in will be permitted un til after the first encore arrangements are being made to run university dances every two weeks in former years these dances have about broken even it is hoped that this year the dances will be so well patronized that the committee will feel justified in running dances every two weeks the greatly delayed founder's day sports took place on saturday afternoon at two 0 clock on the up per athletic field they consisted of a tug of war and a soccer game the freshman class appeared in full force and there was plenty of material from which to select the men for the teams on the other hand the sophomores were rather handicapped for the lack of men in fact the same men were forced to participate in both the tug-of war and the soccer game the tug-of-war was run off first with the result that the freshmen won by an easy margin the con test was to consist of three bouts of three minutes each but after the first bout it was decided to cut the time to two minutes ixu t7u „„!., ,„,.,..„ *£»«#> hrv fire bout holding the ribbon on their side of the line for over two out of three minutes in the next the freshmen completely overwhelmed their opponents keping the ribbon throughout the entire period the work of the freshman team was characterized by the earnest ness and zeal with which they planned the contest under the captaincy of j badham the frosh team lined up acoerding to weight and was arranged in that order their pulling was strong and con sistent and nothwithstanding the greatest endeavors of messrs far rington and kauffman who were handling the sophomore team the ribbon was controlled by the frosh the line-up was as follows sophomores : kauf mann roy clark goldman loeser kennedy sayre f christman katzenstein kleckner wright merkle powles farrington wasser freshmen badham lerch alt miller parker damiani bergdoll kahn beech morehouse new baker hastings brumbaugh pier son ziegler and niekamp referee : lieut blake timers and judges bartlett davis 21 gooding 22 the next event w r as the soccer game and here again the sopho mores were at a disadvantage as they had had little or no practice the freshmen however had been practicing almost every day and were better acquainted with the field and the game continued on fourth page as the field was soft and muddy the playing was rather loose and uncertain and many laughs were called forth by the falling of the players the game was played spiritedly on the part of both teams and good wholesome sport was evident throughout the entire contest the playing of goldman and bowles for the sophs is worthy of special mention and it was greatly due to them that the ball was ever taken into the frosh ter ritory the defensive playing of the sophs was much better than their offensive and they were mt)re able to prevent the freshmen from there will be a very short meeting oif the senior class thurs day at 12 o'clock in drown hall study room a big chemical meet has been arranged for next thursday even ing january 30 at 8 p.m in saucon hall the speakers who will address the society are j mckay 17 who will speak on the use of gas in warfare g e doan 19 whose subject is the examination of steel and h d ginder 19 who will talk on ' ' corn products i . ' ' mr mckay was until recently connected with the chemical wairefiare service and his talk should be particularly interesting now that theme is no longer any censorship by the gov ernment an tine discoveries and dievelopmentß of new poisonous gases by thisi branch of the army new men should make ai special effort to be preisient after the address there will be an abundance of eats senior alumni engineers ac companied by dr ullmann and professors chamberlin and diefen derfer last week made a three-day inspection trip to chemical plants in the vicinity of philadelphia the trip included visits to harri son bros manufacturers of paints and heavy acids the welsbach co manufacturers of gas mantles franklin sugar refinery and the rosemont filter station harrison bros make a large number of products the chief ones being white lead alum and heavy acids white lead is made by the dutch process and carter process in the dutch process metallic lead is oast iitno buckles which are placed in small earthenware pots a dilute solution of acetic acid is placed in the bottom of the pot and a large number of pots so charged are packed together with spent tan bark due to fermentation of the tan bark large amounts of carbon dioxide are set free which aided by the acetic acid reacts with the lvjcc*~aj uks ja xix v jlj i s j-oia-cij ju.lj 61.1 o carter process the lead is first atomized and then charged in ro tating wooden drums dilute acetic acid is placed in the drums and carbon dioxide is passed through this process is much shorter than the dutch process re quiring only from one-third to one half the time in the manufacture of alum bauxite is leached with sulphuric acid and the resultant solution treated with purifying agents and filtered to get rid of iron and silica on evaporation of the solution and cooling alum is obtained various kinds of alum were made in a similar way sulphuric acid was produced in large quantities both by the lead chamber and contact process other acids made in this plant are hydrochloric nitric acetic and lactic acids , the second day was spent at the welsbach plant where the com plete process of the manufacture of gas mantles was explained the mantles are made of either silk cotton or ramie a chinese grass the material is woven into a long cylinder and then carefully washed and dried after drying it is immersed in a solution of 99 thorium nitrate and 1 cerium nitrate which are absorbed by the fibres and impart to them the in candescent properties this treatment is followed by another drying after which the cylinders were cut to the proper length for different types of mantles then the mantles are subjected to the heat from a blow pipe flame to shape them and harden them this operation re quires great skill after being ex amined they are packed for ship ment a very interesting feature of this plant wa*j the recovery of radium and mesothorium which occur in very small quantities in the monazite sands from which the cerium and thorium are obtained this was done by a process of frac tional crystallization at the franklin sugar refinery continued on third page bethlehem pa tuesday january 28 1919 lehigh brown and white senior chemicals on inspection trip extension courses by professors miners to meet
