petroleum and gas iron and steel mining milling and geology coal and electric welding the last being considered at a joint session with the american institute of electrical engineers tuesday february 18 has been designated as canadian mining institute day at which time there will be a dis cussion of international co-opera tion jn mining in north america and uniform mining law for north america a session of the national research council will be held wed nesday february 19 and on thurs day february 20 there will be an all-day excursion to the plant of the federal shipbuilding co at newark n j for the inspection of electrical welding of ships luncheon will be served each day at institute headquarters social features of the meeting are a smoker a travelogue by george miller dyott late of the days from the proposed nine-day easter vacation and permit the use of two other days at a different date for the junior week activities it was deemed that a considerable propor tion of the student body would be out of town under the present ar rangement of affairs and that junior week activities would suf fer correspondingly during the meeting arcadia rep resentatives were requested to im press on the men of their living groups especially the freshmen that the honor system will be strictly enforced during mid-years and that the co-operation of the student body is sought on saturday afternoon the soc cer game between saucon cross roads and lehigh was called a draw after 26 minutes of play when o v greene a very promis ing freshman athlete met with the misfortune of a broken leg midway between ankle and knee not having a man to take his place lehigh was unable to finish the game which was satisfactory to the opposing team provided that a game should be arranged for in the near future greene's accident was purely a matter of misfortune it came when he collided with two of the opposing team when each made a dash and a kick at the ball greene who has always shown commend able spirit in the various athletic events in which he has partici pated displayed in this instance a remarkable amount of grit despite the fact that the game was played on a wet and slippery field it was several years ago upon the out break of the war he was put in charge of athletics at camp meade and was then sent to italy there he was virtually in charge of the athletic activities of the italian army and it may be said that the rallying of the morale of the ital ian army after the institution of american athletics was due largely to his efforts captain raymond walters who since last september had been reg istrar of the field artillery cen tral officers training school at camp taylor ky resumed his duties as registrar of lehigh uni versity monday the gradingsystem organized by captain walters at the camp taylor school where there were 14,000 students has been adopted by the chief of field artillery for all schools in the new field artillery educational sys tem the current issue of the field artillery journal just out con tains a 6000 word article on the f.a.c.0.t.5 with - illustrations written by captain walters seniors notice ! scholarship awarded the members of the senior class who have not received class ballots are requested to ask either j l rosenmiller or r w ludlow for them it is hoped that some of the bal lots which are out will be turned in shortly the committee desires to start working on the class biogra phies the first meeting of the metal lurgical society was held friday evening february 16 in saucon hall at this meeting , the society was reorganized and importance and deserves the utmost consideration for a furnace improperly charged can never make good steel the mod ern furnaces are charged by means of a small car running up an in cline to the top this car is called the skip a man is provided at the top of the furnace to watch the tension of the cable on the skip and see that it is always tight in order that the charge may be put in the blast furnace evenly a double bell is provided one small bell and a larger one below the charge is put on the bell by means of a distributor which turns about 87 every time a load from the skip is deposited this makes the material fall evenly around all sides of the furnace when the bell is full it is lowered causing the charge to drop down into the furnace another type is often used called the brown top but it does not distribute the charge so evenly and it often accumulates in heaps the mckee top is the best and most scientific on the market today it has a long nar row throat and a revolving hopper speech his speech was in part as fol lows if prayer is essentially a dominant expression of a man's true wishes there can be little doubt as to his sincerity when he does pray it is in this way that jesus prayed for he was always anxious that his disciples should feel the unity he had with god all great men have felt the absolute need for unity in nature there is no evidence of separate per sonalities for all parts work as one the primitive man always felt an intrusion into his life when some thing unusual occurred in the world about him he would immediately turn his thoughts in worship to wards it and in a way defy this intrusion today it is different for the modern civilized man would try to explain the unusual by show ing how it fits in with ascertained laws of nature jesus too believed in this great idea of unity the lord our god is one god was the message which jesus preached to the world — a message which startled the world about him for it was a new vision on the unity of god what jesus prayed for was for a keener insight and vision of god's unity his prayer as given in the seventeenth chapter of john tries to interpret the unity of the trinity it may be divided into three parts in the first part the relation between god and himself is brought out for jesus always re garded himself as the true mes senger of god the second explains the unity he always strived
