merritt tenafly n j the em barkation camp for overseas troops at the present time mr schwartz is interested in the religious work of the y m 0 a and most par ticularly in a nation-wide move ment known as the world fellow ship campaigm mr schwartz's talk promises to be of exceptional interest the soloist for the sun day evening service will be miss fanny silberstein and miss ger trude cristol both of the moravian college for women miss silber stein will render a number of violin solos and miss oristol will give selected readings varsity tankmen to meet swarthmore the baskeball team closes its of ficial season with the rutgers game at rutgers on saturday • coach geary's men have not slacked their pace at the end of the schedule and the players are still in fine condi tion rutgers with a veteran team has had a splendid season and a victory from the brown and white five would add considerably to the line of defeats they have ad ministered to other colleges among them being west virginia and cornell the lehigh quintet is just as determined to end their season with a flourish so the com ing contest promises to be a hard fought and fast one coach geary's men are in fine afternoon at 2 30 o'clock the lehigh wrestling squad will meet the grapplers from university of pennsylvania at taylor gym billy sheridan's men are in excellent shape and promise to show up very well their creditable showing in de feating perm state the intercol legiate champions of last year seems to indicate that the score this saturday should be in le high's favor pennsylvania lost to navy as did lehigh but they were entirely shut cut whereas lehigh won one bout state succeeded in defeating perm several weeks ago but the latter won from columbia the preliminary tryouts were begun wednesday and will be con tinued on thursday in the first prelim hollinshead 2 minutes 30 seconds wuerz also won from coxe by decision having an advantage of 1 minute 10 seconds hollinsheadi will wrestle wuerz ' ' old lehigh spirit ' ' the plans for a victory re union " as it has been termed will perhaps be the first to mature the reunion is to be held on alumni day june 28 1919 and every class is to be represented by the largest possible delegation it is intended that this shall be an alumni meeting unparalleled in the history of this institution and its purpose is to show to the boys who have been in the service and for that matter to lehigh herself the extreme gratitude of the alumni body there is every indication that the project will be met with ap proval by every one and the pres . ■■..-,., 0.i .„ - :., 1 a strenuous application and tense ness of work during the recent world war will afford many men an opportunity to attend the re union who were formerly so oc cupied or held such responsible po sitions that they were unable to at tend this annual festive gathering letters have been sent to the class secretaries of all the classes from 1869 to 1918 and to date more than half of them have responded agreeing to hold the respective class reunions on june 28 the plans for the lehigh memorial were also stated the memorial is to be dedicated to the services and sacrifices of the le high alumni and undergraduate bodies during the great war the building is to be a useful as well as architecturally beautiful build ing it is to be planned so that it shall strikingly present the marv ellous record of lehigh s sons and at the same time be put to such a use that it will be frequented by many people in order that they see and realize the great part le high has played in the war not merely with the armies in the field but also in the industries which played a vital part in the conduct of the war it has been proposed to have a great entrance hall or rotunda lighted from above and a gallery on the second floor level the cen ter of the rotunda is to be occu pied by a statue symbolical of the services of lehigh v/hile the names of the men in the service and their deeds are to be recorded in bas reliefs and on bronze tablets ad joining this room hung with the trophies of war is to be a room dedicated to those whose services were confined to laboratories and shipyard and various other purely technical lines in order to turn the building to some use which will make it a much-frequented place it was sug gested to have in it the administra tion offices and faculty rooms and as the memorial is to be built by subscriptions from the alumni the alumni association should have continued on third page a scholarship of 350 offered by e.i dupont de nemours and com pany of wilmington delaware to a senior student or graduate stu dent at lehigh making chemistry or chemical engineering his ma jor subject has been awarded to howard d ginder 19 of scran ton pa this scholarship was of fered with the purpose of encour aging advanced students to con tinue the study of chemistry and shows clearly the broad-minded in terest which the duponts are tak ing in the future of the chemical industry in the united states before the biggest and most en thusiastic crowd that has jammed into taylor gymnasium this year lehigh waded through lafayette for a 36-23 victory at basketball wednesday night the game especially the first half was undoubtedly one of the fastest seen on the local floor be sides being , marked with all the aggressiveness and fight of a lehigh-lafayette contest lafayette opened up scoring when bobbe shot a basket within the first few seconds of play but their hopes of a run were short lived for gardy immediately rolled one off the palm of his hand into the ring and started what might be termed a lehigh reign of terror every lehigh man started off with a bang and put up a game that la fayette could hardly see let alone stop the lehigh offensive was down the floor dropping in basket after basket that would have been difficult in practice shooting what was most remarkable however was that they missed very seldom during the first half straub caged two one of them being a one hander over his head donovan got four while gardy and savaria rang in two apiece while the lehigh offensive was running wild the defensive put up an air-tight game frain covered anderson so completely the first half that he was unable to get a basket and it was not until the sec ond half that the lafayette best bet managed to stick in his one and only two pointer in the meantime straub sat very tight on bobbe shutting him out with only one goal for the first half when the half-way mark was reached the score stood 22-6 le having outplayed lafayette in every department of the game the scoring of the second half started when straub tipped one in after an unsuccessful try at a foul by donovan the play of the second half was not as fast as third page the senior mechanical engi neers returned from their trip of four days to new york and the vicinity on thursday evening professor p b de schweinitz of the mechanical department ac companied them their head quarters was the hotel mcalpin on monday they visited the plant of the new york herald ; a high pressure pumping station and the singer building in the evening a trip was taken under the guidance of one of the secretaries of the industrial service move ment of the international commit tee of the y m c a through chinatown the ghetto and lower east side the babcock & wilcox plant at bayonne n j and the singer sewing machine co plant at eliz abethport were two places visited on tuesday the former plant supplies boilers for most of the battleships of our navy and the plant was commandeered by the government during the war so that the entire output could be used for the new ships of the navy and merchant marine the singer sewing machine co proved to be of special interest to the party for it is the oldest and best equipped plant of its kind in this country wednesday the party visited the manhattan rubber manufacturing co at passaic and the crocker wheeley co at ampere n j at the manhattan rubber manufac turing co they were able to gain a very good knowledge of the var ious uses and manufacture of rub ber products on the last day of the trip they visited the brooklyn navy yard and the interborough rapid tran sit co power house at 74th street and east river the navy yard is the largest on the atlantic coast and the drydocks proved to be of particular interest they also went on board a few of the ships and were able to see what a ship looks like in war times in cross ing the brooklyn bridge on their way to the navy yard they were able to see the other three bridges which span the east river all of which are marvels of engineering construction university dance saturday even ing tea dances social activities on the campus will be at their height during the week-end when a number of dances and other events will be given by various organizations of the uni versity on friday evening the sopho more cotillion club will give its annual mid-winter dance which has been postponed for several months due to unsettled condi tions drown hall where the dance will be given has been taste fully and elaborately decorated in early spring colors music is to be furnished by the banjoe wallace orchestra of new york city who have been secured from the st andrew's hotel for the occasion their reputation for artists of dance music is firmly founded the cotillion's program consists of twenty-four dances divided into equal parts with dances from 9 00 to 2:00 a buffet lunch will be served during intermission a fea ture of the evening will be a nov elty dance which has been ar ranged for the occasion on saturday afternon the chi psi fraternity will entertain with a tea dance at their home chi psi lodge university park dancing will be from 4to 6 at the same time sigma phi will give a tea dance at the lehigh country club saturday evening the second university dance of the year will be the event the banjoe wallace players will furnish music for cotillion's program consists of twenty-four dances divided into equal parts with dances from 9 00 to 2:00 a buffet lunch will be served during intermission a fea ture of the evening will be a nov elty dance which has been ar ranged for the occasion on saturday afternon the chi psi fraternity will entertain with a tea dance at their home chi psi lodge university park dancing will be from 4to 6 at the same time sigma phi will give a tea dance at the lehigh country club saturday evening the second university dance of the year will be the event the banjoe wallace players will furnish music for
