be reached at the phi delta theta up to the present time only two men have reported as candidates a larger number than this is needed to make a suc cessful competition freshman class meeting with the rutgers game march 8 the lehigh 1918-19 basketball season came to an end insomuch as the team won 7 of the 13 games played and tied with perm state the year may be called a successful the first call for candidates came on december 4 and from the turn out it looked as though lehigh would not be represented on the court this year with the removal of the s a t c more men re ported for the cage-game and coach roy geary had a fair-sized squad to work with four players of last year wysocki out tempor arily straub ketcham and savaria formed the nucleus the first game was with the navy and although lehigh had a green team they put up a very commendable fight three games with muhlenberg lafayette and moravian followed in close order after the defeat at annapolis le high winning from the two weaker colleges but suffering defeat at the hands of our old rival all of these contests and the west point and delaware state games that followed directly were played with what might be called a different team each time because coach geary was continually shak ing up the five and trying out new men donovan returned at the perm state game and it was then that the coach found a combination that suited him this was donovan and savaria forwards stewart center straub and frain guards this combination won the next three games straight with new york uni versity muhlenberg and bucknell but they were stopped on the re turn game with n y u the last big game of the season was with lafayette here on march 5 the same combination with the exception of gardy who was sub stituted for by stewart represented the brown and white it was in this contest that the five gave their best basketball showing by playing rings around the eastonians in true lehigh style from the re sults of this game a third lehigh lafayette meeting would have un doubtedly meant an advantage to the brown and white the offensive end of lehigh s playing was ably held down by donovan and savaria who are both exceptionally fast and adept at goal shooting they were well sub stituted by tollin wysocki s broken arm kept him out of the keystone position almost entirely but stewart and gardy put up good games at center straub and frain played air-tight defensive games for the most part while straub gave an excellent account of himself as a scorer when ketcham got in the game he showed his ability to hold opponents well the two scorers who far eclipsed all others were straub and dono van who tallied 23 and 29 field continued on third page lehigh s alumni clubs have been very active in the past month no less than five meetings having been held by lehigh clubs in some of the principal cities of the east an outstanding feature of all these meetings was the enthusiasm and old-time lehigh pep which pre vailed the first of these meetings was held by the new york lehigh club a club having its member ship living in and about greater new york the meeting was a dinner held at the machinery club on the evening of february 13 there were about 125 present com posed of members and guests dr drinker was one of the speakers and told the club of the part the university played in the war and the plans which are now being made to make lehigh a bigger and better place in the future major john b carlock 08 the com mander of the ist gas regiment who had just come home from abroad gave a very interesting ac count of his experiences during a > tar's service abroad his troops were the only offensive gas troops which the united states had in active fighting these troops were first used in connection with british and french troops and with the american army from chateau thierry to the end ellis parker butler the humorist gave a highly entertaining talk the last speaker was w r okeson secretary of the alumni associa tion okie told of the work of the association and spoke particu larly of the memorial fund by which lehigh will pay tribute to her soldier sons in the erection of a memorial building about 25 mien from buffalo and niagara falls attended the meet ing of the buffalo lehigh club which was held on the evening of february 24 at the transporta tion club after the dinner the election of officers was held pre ceded by a report by w d san derson 08 secretary-treasurer the new officers elected were president b m mac donald 95 and secretary-treasurer t m uptegraff 09 the speakers were vice-president emery who gave a most interesting talk on present day conditions at lehigh and dr lowenstein a former instructor of mechanical enginering but who is now with the general electric company he told of some of the interesting inventions developed by his company for the purpose of combating the submarine w r okeson secretary of the alumni association told of the wonderful record made by lehigh graduates and students in the war and men tioned the campaign which is be ing started to erect a memorial building continued on fourth page at pottsville pa on february 27 a large number of men met at the pottsville club for the purpose of reviving and reorganizing the southern anthracite lehigh club plans for this reorganization were read and approved and a meeting set for the next week after this business had been transacted the club heard an address by dr the wrestling team left this morning for perm state for what is probably the most important meet on the schedule for the re sults of this contest will show the prospects of each team in the in tercollegiates the brown and white and state grapplers being the recognized leading contenders for this honor which the middle state collegians won last year lehigh has already met and de cisively defeated the perm state matmen once this season getting the long end of a 19-13 meet on march 1 in the 115-pound class pete reynolds will meet gerber of perm state in the meet two weeks ago reynolds threw this man in 2 minutes and 45 seconds capt bevier who has scored falls in every meet in which he has participated this season will meet noel of state in the 125-pound class . he should not have much trouble the 135-pound bout in the last meet went two extra periods with bertolet gaining the decision over babcock his mountaineer op ponent in the 145-pound class state will probably present mills cap tain of their team two years ago that year mills was the recognized leader of his class though he gained no intercollegiate honors state not being a participant that year loeser will meet this man on saturday bergdoll lost by decision to brown of state after a hard and fast bout two weeks ago these two girapplers are about evenly matched so no predictions can be made on the results in this the 158-pound bout manley threw his opponent in 1 minute 59 seconds in the previous meet it is probable that booth will represent lehigh in the heavy weight class eddie has had a lot of hard luck with injuries which have kept him out of nearly all the meets this year if booth is in condition to compete he will give good account of himself both teams have lost only one meet this year other than the le high-state meet two weeks ago both lost to the navy but as le high put up a better game in her contest against the middies than state it looks as though we had the on the middle state mat men the intercollegiates will be run on march 27 28 and 29 at perm state the contestants are : 115-pound class reynolds le high vs gerber state 125-pound class capt bevier lehigb vs noel state 135-pound class bertolet le high vs babcock state 145-pound class loeser le high vs mills state 158-pound class j bergdioll lehigh vs brown state 175-pound class manley le high vs grimes state unlimited class booth lehigb vs black state yesterday at noon a short meet ing of the freshman class was held in packer hall elections were held to fill the vacancies made by several of the class officers leaving college g c parker was elected vice-president to fill the place formerly held by g w cor nelius and m k jacobs was elected treasurer in place of f w wysocki continued on third page pennsylvania s annual relay carnival to be held on franklin field on april 23 and 26 looms up once more as the greatest athletic meet of the year already the list of teams entered is approaching the 300 mark and it now looks as if every college relay team fast enough to warrant taking to the meet and every star college athlete east of the rocky mountains will be on hand for the great classic • all the big colleges of both the east and the west have sent word that they will be on hand the track games of the past two weeks indicate that the calibre of the teams entered will be right up to pre-war standards harvard princeton cornell chicago mich igan columbia dartmouth notre dame yale and many other col leges have had their athletes in ac tion and some remarkable perform ances have been seen in the east the university of pennsylvania and harvard have made the best showing in relay racing pennsyl vania's one-mile team has shown itself the fastest indoor team in the east in the west chicago has a similar distinction so that the meeting of these two teams at the relay carnival will be well worth seeing but outdoor racing is dif ferent from indoor work and both pennsylvania and chicago will have to look to their laurels for harvard pittsburgh michigan columbia dartmouth and mass inst of tech will have real fast teams to put in this event in the two-mile relay harvard recently proved against yale that they have some fast half-milers they will be hard to beat in this event at the relay carnival though cornell notre dame chicago state and columbia are known to have fast quartettes the long distance men have not yet had their innings but judging by general reports the four-mile relay championship will be up to the standard the east ern colleges will watch coach stagg of chicago closely as he has a rare lot of distance men and will be strong in either the two or the four-mile event though he can hardly expect to have fast teams in both races continued on second page the sprint and the distance med ley relay that are held on the first day of the carnival should be re markable events as several colleges have record-breaking teams for these races pennsylvania har vard princeton pittsburgh chicago michigan dartmouth columbia mass inst of tech and other colleges have wonderful ma terial for these medley relays it is probable that these races will show many of the greatest sprint ers and middle distance runners in college today shea of pittsburgh lehigh brown and white
