evening competi tion opened prospects are good for an excel lent season no schedule announced spring course lasting six weeks to be conducted by v.m.c.a this year work progressing to make a suc cessful round of festivities for the guests representative of aspromet con struction co lectures in physics building gypsum slab march 26 first stitution for concrete four main principles for its sub schedule of speakers and their respective groups arranged announced later the y m c a meeting next sunday promises to be one of in terest the speaker will be lieu tenant e emmet rauch m.d of the united states army who will relate some of his many interesting experiences in the great war lieu tenant rauch was in charge of a medical base in the argonne hav ing just returned from the scene of active duty in the argonne forest and in ithe st mihiel sector where he was severely wounded at the famous battle of the argonne he was gassed dr rauch s talk will explain some of the extraordinary war experiences that he has under gone one morning the lieutenant left with eight hundred men of which one hundred returned an other time he returned with two other officers from an engagement in which twenty-four officers were lost he captured a german base hospital and was able to turn it into use immediately and con tinued to minister services until it was bombed by the enemy lieutenant rauch is the son of c r rauch b.s in chem 77 who is chief chemist for the le high portland cement co and the inland portland cement co the soloist for the evening will be william f bowler 22 who will render grieg's to spring as a piano selection arcadia meets little over four weeks remain be fore the annual junior week fes tivities will be held preparations are going on rapidly to make the three days as brilliant as possible cotillion club will give its an nual spring dance on monday night april 21 the junior prom committee is arranging an attractive dance for tuesday night april 22 rehearsals are being held nearly every night in drown hall for the mustard and cheese production of cheating cheaters the show will be staged in the lyric theatre allentown on wednesday night april 22 the mustard and cheese club will probably make some ar rangement for the transportation of the house party guests to allen town on tuesday afternoon syracuse will be met in baseball manager zeller is trying to schedule a la crosse game with swarthmore for wednesday afternoon house parties and teas will be + he other features which will make up the round of gayety for the three days the week will also be marked by the appearance of the first issue of the burr for this collegiate year the support of the entire stu dent body is needed to make junior week a success it is hoped that a large number of men will be able to take part in the festivities lecture requested cutting in allowed r o t c thursday evening club the fun artists have come to life again and ' ' the lehigh burr is to bud forth with a whole new line of pointed jokes after its en forced planting season during the war this was the decision reached at the reorganization meet ing of the college wits in drown hall monday evening the board has decided that there will be two issues this year the first one to make its appearance during junior week while the other half of the issues will be read during com mencement men will subscribe to the burr as in previous years the subscription for the two num bers to be $ 50 which it is thought will just cover expenses positions on the burr board are open to any man in college and candidates should report immedi ately there are vacancies in all three departments art business and editorial and though a goodly number of men have started in the competition many more candidates are needed to make the paper a success the competition will be run straight through to june when the men who showed up best will be elected to the board to serve until they graduate or leave college opportunities for making good are the best in years as there are but nine old board members left in college of which three will gradu ate in june the lehigh burr has been published every year with a few exceptions since its establishment in 1881 each year seeing improve ment in its style and general make-up although it was decided last year to discontinue publication on account of the war the high cost of materials the scarcity of paper and like reasons the student body will be glad to welcome its return as a collegiate activity the pres ent board is to be commended on its action in of the arcadia was held in drown hall monday evening the question of the advisability of taking action in determining the sentiment of the student body in regards to the establishment of an r o t c at lehigh was settled by deciding to ask the university authorities to have a war depart ment representative lecture on the present plans of the government in regards to college r o t c discussion concerning the abol ishment of ' ' cutting in " at the col lege dances ended in a ruling being adopted that cutting in will be allowed any time after the first encore a committee was appointed to draw up a new set of by-laws to govern the arcadia in the future glee club tryouts tomorrow afternoon the discussion groups which have been conducted each year un der the auspices of the y m c a will be run this spring the course is to last but six weeks instead of the usual twelve due to the fact that it is being held in the spring instead of the winter as heretofore there will be about twelve groups taking part this year and any of the living groups who wish to have them but have not yet sig nified their intention of doing so should get in touch at once with the y m c a office by telephone or interview r r coffin or e l forstall meetings will be on wednesday evenings as has been the case in former years the time for each meeting is to be from 7 to 7 30 p.m the leaders who are chosen from the business men and ministers of bethlehem and members of the faculty are arranged for both as regulars and substitutes the book which will be used in connection with the course is ' ■the call of a world task by j lovell murray this book has been very successfully used in connec tion with courses of this kind and about 75,000 copies have been sold there are six chapters and one is to be taken up on each of the six evenings the titles of these chap ters are 1 the call for reality in re ligious life 2 the call for christian inter nationalism 3 the call of new opportuni ties in the mission fields 4 the call of the world's pres ent need 5 the call for a world pro gram in the church 6 the call for a full mobiliza tion of christian forces each leader will have a copy and the groups letters second : to seek a more thorough understanding of the conditions and problems of modern life through association with those who are expert in their respective fields and through personal study with the hope that as an organization and also individually we may as sist in improving those conditions and solving those problems the following season program has been arranged by the commit tee crescent of the near east illustrated the prospects for this year's track team are unusually good the athletic association in co operation with the management of the track squad are planning a re as coach a man of wide experience in track work with the large number of former track men back in college the squad has a good chance to repay lafayette for some of the defeats that she has given lehigh in the last few years coach kanaly was assistant to frank m kanaly his brother in the training of the army and naval aviators at the massachu setts institute of technology dur ing the war he has competed as an amateur track man being coached seven years by his brother and two years by john a ryder while a member of the boston ath letic association track and cross country teams since 1917 he has competed as a professional athlete in distances ranging from 100 yards to three miles coach kanaly took three seasons training on the m i t cross country teams for coaching experience he is ex pected to take up his duties as track coach on monday march 24 five letter men from former years are out for the squad and will form a good backbone on which to build these are j a gardy 20 high jump very interesting and instructive illustrated lecture on gypsum slab construction to the members of the civil engi neering course on wednesday march 19 at 11 a.m in the physics lecture room mr hoge is one of the chief engineers of the aspromet construction company his lecture was in part * ' gypsum also known as calcium sulphate has been used for con struction purposes from time im memorial it was used in the con struction of the egyptian pyra mids it came into broad use in europe about 1700 under the name of plaster of paris and has been used ever since for all kinds of construction at the pres ent time it is being used princi pally for flooring in large build ings on account of its property of deadening sound there are four principal rea sons why it is used in construction purposes in place of concrete which it greatly resembles they are first its lightness in weight it aveighs only 48 pounds per cubic foot or about one-third the weight of concrete by using reinforced gypsum in building instead of re inforced concrete the dead load can be greatly lessened and thus make it unnecessary to build the large foundations which the heavy concrete would necessitate ' ' secondly gypsum will set very quickly from five to ten minutes after pouring the gypsum will set hard and the forms can be re moved in a period of from six to twelve hours this means that if the moulds are poured in the morn ing the forms can be removed in the afternoon or if poured in the afternon the forms can be re moved on the following morning thus speeding up the work and making a great number of forms unnecessary gypsum can for this reason be used in freezing weather and as it develops a little heat when setting it can be used when the temperature is down as far as 15 degrees f the buildings of watervliet arsenal at watervliet n v were constructed in this manner at a very cold temperature third gypsum is a good heat insulator its loss of heat is 4.08 calories per square foot of area or about one-tenth that of concrete when used for wall floors and ceiling or roofs of buildings makes a great difference in the cost of heating the buildings and fourth the porosity of gypsum makes it both sound proof and lessens vibration it is used for the walls and ceilings in the boston conservatory of music to make the separate rooms sound proof one from the other a double three-inch wall with
