bridges at course meet university enjoys college lecture lehigh chapter hears lecture professor nettleton of yale speaks on freedom and authority one of the most active men around the lehigh campus is john gordon ridsdale during his four years at the bethlehem institution he has revealed his remarkable versatility by talc ing an important part in the it has been decided that the week ending may 7th will be moving up week this year and the committee headed by chick farrell is now at work formulating the plans and der tails of the events to take place at that time the custom started at le high last year has met with great favor and it is planned to make the events much more elaborate so that the members of all the classes will be able to take an active part of course the freshmen will cut a piece out of their hats each day and then on the last day of the week they will gath er at taylor field to have the final rush of the year and will proceed to have the usual hat cremation although the plans are yet tentative the sopho mores will probably wear brown ties while the juniors and sen iors will breeze forth in uni que hats made especially for the occasion notice will ap pear in the brown and white at a later date as to where these hats may be obtained besides their distinctive hats the seniors will also be able to command that dignity which the occasion warrants by swag gering around the campus with their canes on their arms then on the moving up day saturday they will each pres ent their canes to the members of the junior class who will thence go forth on the campus as seniors senior banquet to be on wednesday the civil engineering so ciety met last thursday evening in the physics lecture room the program was featured by an interesting talk from mr h k ellis lehigh 03 who talked on concrete bridges years of experience in bridge construction and building ma terials have made mr ellis an authority on the subject he chose the speaker is occupied as county engineer of chester county in the course of his address mr ellis spoke on the county financing of bridge construc tion showing how important it is to build concrete bridges with the least possible expense and why the present system holds sway he also discussed the different steps that must be gone through to build the bridges including the purchas ing of the material a careful planning of the procedure and the selection of the most time saving devices he accompan ied his lecture with slides of the various types of concrete bridges which are now being used and also a few of the old style bridges during the bet ter part of his lecture mr ellis carefully explained the theory of bridge building and also gave an account of the corrosion of steel bridges the meeting was open to ev continued on page four on thursday of last week the lehigh chapter of the american association o f university teachers met at drown hall where they had the privilege of hearing pro fessor g h nettleton who that same afternoon had de livered his interesting lecture to the students professor nettleton is a distinguished man in educational circles he is at present chairman of the department of english at yale and has held several im portant administrative posi tions professor nettleton touch ed upon a topic pertinent to the interests of the lehigh chapter he created through his informal discussion a great interest among those present he spoke of the present educational tenden cies at yale of the establish ment of honor courses for se lected students of the basis of freshman entrance selec tions of the flexible fresh man year of restriction in the number of graduate stu dents and of other vital edu cational matters the american association of university teachers is very active in educational matters the lehigh branch consists of about twenty members all of whom are concerned with developments in the fiejds of education plans for junior banquet formed phi beta kappa admits fourteen entertainment to consist of vaudeville acts and six piece orchestra j gordon ridsdale university's extra-curricula ac tivities his college prepara tion was obtained at sidwell's friends school washington d c and georgetown univer sity he is the son of percival s ridsdale editor of the mag azine nature and his home is in washington d c he is working for a degree in chem ical engineering in the fall of his freshman year gordon went out for cross country and won the team award clc he later quali field for the r o t c rifle team and in the spring was the third leading man in the mustard and cheese show win ning election to the club he was also on the varsity bas ketball and tennis squads continued on page four in his sophomore year he was again on the cross-country squad shot on the rifle team for which he also acted in the three college heads and eleven students taken into honorary there have been many glow ing indications concerning the success of the current produc tion of the mustard and cheese club mercy sakes but the most satisfying omen of its mer its came as a result of the sun day visit of ned wayburn its famous producer mr way burn reviewed the show from the opening scene to the grand finale and so impressed was the mentor that he is trying to se cure permission to take the show on the road this summer to be sponsored as a legitimate offering in the larger cities of the east and middle west under his management mr wayburn stated that it is by far the best college production he has ever staged in his career as a pro ducer with the addition of several sets of costumes to the regular equipment the show would compare favorably with any current road production this is without doubt the most flattering compliment ever giv en any similar collegiate dram atic attempt the executive committee of mustard and cheese is not in a position to accept the offer immediately as the matter must first be taken up with the faculty with their approval the entire company will start on an extensive road tour on the completion of the college year and will terminate their showings on the first of september should the faculty pass favorably on the petition mr wayburn will at once begin to arrange the bookings the producer is very much impressed with the fine work turned in by the students in the way of music book lyrics and talent he is introducing the black bottom kinkajou and other specialty numbers in the production with great success and the dancing ensemble ow ing to its proficiency is being treated in the same manner as continued on page three fine program is outlined at class meeting on thursday lehigh university calendar a regular meeting of the pi delta epsilon was held last thursday evening four im portant matters held the focus of attention during the course of the meeting probably the most important of these and the one that will have the most direct bearing upon the university as a whole was that concerning the pi del ta epsilon razz sheet which will be published at house party time similar literary attempts have proved most en tertaining at other colleges and pi delta epsilon has de cided that its initial venture in this line of endeavor shall be a feature of house party a dis cussion of the subject was held and pertinent suggestions were advanced various members of the organization were assigned topics to be developed for the razz sheet with the suggestion that although the razz sheet will amply live up to its name a certain amount of discretion would be advisable because of the faculty censorship that will otherwise be invoked a report was made by rids dale concerning the work that is being done upon the new un iversity publication — the le high review favorable prog ress is being made upon this new publication which is plan ned to contain the best features of every phase of university life it was decided that men holding promient positions upon the staff of the review would be eligible to membership in pi delta epsilon ridsdale acting in his capac ity as president of the intercol legiate newspapers association made a request that the mem bers of the pi delta epsilon do everything possible to aid dur ing the annual convention of the i n a which will be held in bethlehem on the 13th and 14th of may representatives from all the colleges claiming continued on page four finals reached in tournament dormitories hold successful dance the first dormitory dance was held last saturday night in drown hall the dance was held under the auspices of tay lor hall and price hall al though the dance was run chiefly for the dormitory men it was not a strictly private one the dance started at eight and continued to twelve while the music was furnished by the lehigh mountaineers the hall was beautifully decorated with crepe paper balloons and le high banners the dance was a huge success and was enjoyed by all who attended the chaperones were lieu tenant and mrs taber mr and mrs hibshman and fred traf ford the committee in charge was r o bush chairman prangely molitor craft wil son k'burg and goepp the college lecture for march was delivered by prof george a nettleton of yale university on thursday after noon the 31st of march rarely has the student body enjoyed a speaker as they have prof nettleton his speech was delightfully informal in the beginning but worked up to a fine dramatic close the first part of the address was devoted to the telling of several humor ous ancedotes relating to clocks speakers and audiences this was followed with a tale of princeton relating to the sus ceptibility of the students to conversion by evangelists and was very favorably received several other personal exper iences followed including a dis sertation upon the works of winthrop markwood praise a relatively obscure poet having thus prepared his au dience prof nettleton announc ed his theme freedom and authority they are not neces sarily antagonistic but may and should be reconciled freedom is given to us but it is our du ty to control ourselves this point was ably illustrated by several examples a yale foot ball captain giving the oppos ing and finally victorious team full advantage of a time-out period to enable one of the op ponents men to recover and an instance of a member of a golf team not from yale who had discovered the lost ball of his opponent but had kept quiet un til the judge declared the hole forfeited both these were in stances of freedom controlled the speaker went on to expa tiate on the use and abuse of freedom he mentioned scott the author who wrote himself to death in an endeavor to pay off his debts and contrasted him with byron who swam the hellespont and made a living afterwards telling about it the french revolution furnished an instance of the abuse of free dom continued on page four at this point the lecturer strayed a trifle from his sub ject and cited several examples of american heroism not only in the war itself in which many students distinguished them selves but behind the lines heroism displayed itself in proof the story of a yale stu dent who tried vainly to enter the army was related unable to enlist as a soldier he took a desk job in washington work ed himself ill and died in a washington hospital of pneu monia in the pocket of his coat was found a poem having for its theme the heroism of those who may not actually fight the poem whi«h the lee plans for the senior banquet to be held at 6 30 next wednes day evening at the hotel beth lehem are rapidly nearing com pletion a six piece orchestra has been engaged for the occa sion and other entertainment is being provided by the commit tee in charge this will prob ably consist of vaudeville acts from philadelphia the speakers of the evening will be dean mcconn profes sor bradley stoughton profes sor j s long and bosey reiter professor stoughton will speak on responsibilities while professor long will take dreams and visions of a sci entific man as his subject bosey will talk on the meaning of education in a col lege man's career the class urges that every senior cooperate to make this banquet one of the last class functions of the year a big suc cess anyone who has not yet paid his dues should see mar tindale at once no charge for the banquet will be made to those whose dues are paid while those who have not paid theirs will not be admitted to the banquet last wednesday evening in the lower gym the delta upsil on basketball team defeated the alpha chi rho team by a score of thirty-two to sixteen this was the semi-final round of the interfraternity basketball tour nament the d u.s will play the pi lambda phi five for the interfraternity championship some time this week the final game is expected to be close as both teams have displayed a good brand of bas ketball throughout the tourna ment the first half of the game was rather slow as neither of the two teams were able to get their eye on the basket how ever delta upsilon held a slight advantage at the end of the first half the second period opened with a big rally by the d u.s and from that time on there was no doubt as to the outcome of the game wednesday april 6 postponed until monday april 18th the junior class held a meeting last thursday after noon at which time plans were discussed for the banquet to be held this thursday evening walter buck reporting for the banquet committee stated that the banquet will be an excellent one with a fine meal and a va riety of entertainment the class dues are 3.50 this year which includes the banquet no junior will be admitted to the banquet unless his dues have been paid every member of the class is urged to be pres ent with the senior and junior banquets on wednesday and thursday respectively the sophomore and freshman ban quets will probably be held in the very near future if every thing runs true to form the banquet season should be com pleted before easter vacation the banquet will begin at 6 o'clock
