syracuse and army scheduled cheating cheaters full of many laughs vol xxvl no 39 uunior week functions bring young ladies from far and near varsity baseball team to stage two games during junior week lehigh entered in penn relays local nine loses to new york collegians in poorly played game annual intercollegiate track and field meet at u of p april 25 and 26 cotillion dance first of activities thirty=fifth annual production of mustard and cheese club all factors contribute to its success markel's orchestra new york plays score 9=2 four act comedy play centers around identity of ferris crooks forced to return stolen goods macnamara fordham twirler proves enigma to lehigh batsmen the annual spring dance of the sophomore cotillion club was held last night in drown hall and with out doubt met the highest expecta tions of those present besides the members of the club the various fraternities having house-parties attended with their guests and furthermore the number was swelled as a result of the decision to admit freshmen and others bringing partners the music was furnished by markel's orchestra of new york the hall was taste fully decorated with streamers of varied colored crepe paper draped to give a trellis effect and the light was diffused by means of red-hued artificial flowers the program consisted of twenty-four dances and extras and covered a period extending from about nine o'clock to four during the intermission following the twelfth dance supper was served in the lower rooms of the hall the music throughout the even ing was excellent and abounded in pep many of the latest new york pieces being presented the chaperons at the cotillion dance were mrs b l miller mrs h r reiter mrs r l blake and 1 the chaperons of the various houseparties junior prom tonight in the two consecutive contests on tuesday and wednesday of junior week the brown and white diamond artists will clash with syracuse university on taylor field tuesday at 2:30 p.m and with the arm team at west point on wednesday the nine will leave bethlehem at 5:55 a.m on the lehigh valley wed nesday morning taking with them twelve men including manager lawrence and coach keady the outlook of the syracuse game is undecided as this is prac tically their first game however a fast game is expected for the syracuse coach has always pro duced a worthy team the army has suffered one de feat this year at the hands of seton hall who in turn were defeated by fordham hans lobert the army coach has been trying out a new string of pitchers and milton or mcgrath both of whom showed up well in the seton hall game will probably preform in the box the batting of the cadets was strong in their first game and it will require effective pitching to prevent them from hitting it is very probable that pfeiffer will pitch in the syracuse game and johnson in the one at west point another feature of this latter contest is that beck will most likely be back in his place in the field this will help in the batting line-up as well as in the fielding on account of the vacation period managers lawrence and shipherd have cancelled the game with lebanon bethlehem steel on saturday april 26 the line-up for both syracuse and the army game will be the same as that of the fordham game swarthmore to play here tomorrow the perm relays will be held friday and saturday april 25 and 26 this will be during lehigh's vacation but yet the interest in this meet is very great due to the fact that it will show quite well how the track team is rounding into condition the men have been out in actual training for fifteen days and under the best of conditions it takes four weeks to make a track man all he should be however according to the close watch which was kept on the time the men made in the inter class meet and on comparing it with last year's races at perm it looks as though lehigh is in a po sition to win a number of the events on friday the sprint medley will be run and on saturday the middle states one-mile relay championship these two big races are advertiesd as entirely independent of each other '•&&& so a ticket to the friday afternoon race does not admit the holder on satur day things are favorable for a well 1 supported team for the sprint relay five men are entered it is a relay in which two men run 220 one man a quarter and one a half lehigh in all probability will start schultz who is quick and aggressive and can be relied on to give the team a good start be will tap pengelly who will run the second 220 fol lowed by grace who will run the quarter and captain doane the half mile merkel will act as sub stitute this team is one of fighters and speed men and much can be expected of it on saturday in the middle states championship grace will lead sharp wall receive the tap and merkel will run third captain doane will finish the race schultz will be substitute for this race the runners have been selected with great care and a close regard to each one's condition the training schedules have been closely watched and the time of the men has been compared ' the team picked is the strongest lehigh can send for the event and the men who have fol lowed track closely realize that the team is under no handicap in the field events herrington has been entered for the high jump and paret for the pole vault much is expected of paret who showed up well in the inter-class track meet and who has been work ing very hard all week herrington,who is in good physi cal condition through baseball is out for practice now in the event his record is 6 ft 1 in and al though the training period is short he can be looked on as a dangerous man by all opponents phi beta kappa the thirty-fifth annual produc tion of the mustard and cheese club will be staged tomorrow night in the lyric theatre allen tow t n the presentation will be cheating cheaters a comedy in four acts by max marcin mar jorie rambeau was the original star in the play the play is cleverly written as the audience is not permitted to know who ferris the terror of both gangs is until the end of the fourth act two gangs of crooks have fooled each other into believing that they are true members of society each gang is trying to get the other's jewels one gang succeeds in get ting the other's jewels and is for tunate enough to catch the other gang in its attempt following the lines of business they are con sidering consolidation of the two gangs when the house is pulled by detectives the fourth act takes place in the office of ferris where the crooks make restitution of the stolen property and are taken into the employ of ferris dale gilmore in the role of ruth brockton has a difficult part but he interprets it with ability and pleasure e w estes plays the part opposite gilmore and lives up to the reputation which he made last year l b geis as a music teacher has many funny lines and will cause much laughter among the audience t c o'neill as a roughneck crook can pull a gun with great dexterity he has a great disdain for the law and hates to leave the easy life r l wil son is the legal adviser to the brockton gang he has a dry way of saying his lines and is a typical example team notice notice on thursday afternoon at 4:30 exercises were held im drown hall admitting the men recently elected to phi beta kappa into the fra ternity the names of the men ad mitted have appeared in a previous issue of the paper the first defeat of the season was handed the brown and white nine by fordham university on the latters diamond last saturday by a 9 to 2 score the game was poorly played by both teams each having four errors to its credit but the maroon team had more success with the bat and succeeded in touching johnson up for eleven hits two of which were homers and were responsible for five of the new yorker's runs lehigh could do practically nothing with macnamara s offer ings and webb and coffin were the only men to register hits the formers being responsible for the only two runs scored lehigh was considerably handi capped by an injury to mathag who dislocated his shoulder while sliding into second base in the first inning the injury although not of a serious nature will keep him out of at least the next two games dorkin replaced powles in right while powles went to center in place of mathag fordham scored two runs in the first inning on two bases on balls a single and an error by savaria lehigh tied the score in the first of the fourth when savaria and maginnes scored on webb's single after this inning not a brown and white player got as far as second base owing to their inability to hit macnamara fordham scored one run in the fourth and fifth and cinched the game in the seventh when lefevre drove out a homer with two men on bases in the enhanced drown hall in ap propriate easter decorations streamers of purple and white crepe paper very uniquely join the middle light fixtures with those at each end of the hall the lights i along the side of the ball-room have been covered with cerise crepe which will give forth a beautiful | radiant glow the exceptional attractive de sign of the programmes will also add to the splendor of the evening they are of leather 2 by 3 inches the design is that of a picture frame the leather covering having an eliptical hole in it which displays a brown l on the in terior of the program markel's orchestra one of the most noted in new york will be here to give only the best of music for the revellers of that night this orchestra plays at the stan ford yacht club one of the lead ing social rendezvous of new eng land and many other well-known resorts with this music one of the most successful junior proms is awaited all sophomores interested in the sophomore baseball team re port to
