arm for the past ten days is working into condition and will stabilize our pitching staff mathag center fielder who had his shoulder dislocated in the fordiham game on april 19 may soon fill his old po sition and appear in the line-up against the southerners winter halter who played on the intercol legiate championship team has re turned to college and awaits only the decision of the faculty to thompson magin nes andl beck the team left at 7 55 this morn ing 0:1 the philadelphia w load ing railroad officers of y.m.c.a to be elected the stevens institute lacrosse team from hoboken n j is scheduled to be lehigh s opponent this saturday the game is to be played on taylor field at 3.00 p m this is the first time for many years that lehigh has played stevens and the game promises well to revive the old time interest between the two institutions stevens will bring with them sev eral very good men including hei nen alven and mckiernen stevens lost to swarthmore only after a hard fight by a score of 5 to 3 and staged a come-back game with yale last saturday win ning by a score of 5 to 1 coach hunter has been giving the team special attention in every detail since the defeat by the strong navy team and it is expect ed that the team will show quite an improvement the position of goal lehigh s weakest spot which is held by parker shows marked improvement the positions will be held by practically the same men as in the navy game although some changes may be made due to the good show ing of wooley thomlinson david son strank and shaner in practice this last week the line-up will booth f g macarow discussion groups the lehigh tennis team opened its schedule wednesday afternoon by defeating haverford winning five of the matches and losing but one in the first two matches estes of lehigh played weather by and 1 hall played richardson of haverford estes lost the first set to his opponent 8-6 but came back strong winning the next two sets 6-1 and 6-2 in a hard-fought and well>-played match richardson of haverford defeated hall 7-5 and 6-4 which secured for the visitors their only point in the last two matches of the singles wilson played capt too good of haverford 1 , while mercur bucked up against henderson be fore wilson was able to get warmed up toogood had won the first set 6-0 but in the next two sets wilson put up an excellent brand of tennis and defeated his opponent 6-3 and 1 6-4 mercur won the first set from henderson 6-4 but lost the second 9-7 in the hardest contested set of the singles in the third set mer cur repeated his first victory dis £).£. ing visitors have some crack players at last lehigh seems to realize the value of a representative track team and have made a good start by engaging coach kanaly to help produce a worthwhile team the very encouraging fact this year is that together with a good coach a great number of men have come out for the ancient grecian sports not only on the cinder path how ever has all the interest been shown for quite a few men have appeared for the field sports and the discus and javelin have become the universal favorites manager gillman has secured a very commendable schedule and the brown and white trotters will have a full season on account of the postponement of the meadowbrook outdoor meet from may 3 to june 7 the first real meet for lehigh will be held saturday may 10 at swarthmore this is to be a dual meet and the brown and white track men will have a chance to show their true metal all entrees for the swarth more meet will have been mailed by thursday night on the following saturday the team w t ill participate in the middle states intercollegiate meet which also will be held at swarthmore by that time the men will have had sufficient time to get into good trim and coach kanaly expects good re sults from his proteges in preparation for these two meets a medley sprint and dis tance relay race is planned for saturday afternoon may 3 this will be staged between the halves of the lehigh-'stevens lacrosse game there will be in this relay teams of four men each who will run re spectively 220 ya;rds 440 yards 880 yards 1320 yard and one mile this event will take about school numbering one hundred and fifty met at the uni versity club of reading last thurs day evening in what was the larg est lehigh affair ever staged in that city it was under the aus pices of the berks county lehigh club lloyd c fenstermacher ex 18 who graduated from reading high school in 1912 w r as in charge of the meeting speaking particularly to the non-college men he em phazised the fact that this was the age for trained men and that while in years gone by a man could reach the height of success without a col lege education the present time demanded college bred mer lack of finance need be no barrier op portunities are available for the man who must earn his way through college if he desires a college education let him get the courage of his convictions and take a chance he will never regret it dr emery vice-president of the university gave an interesting talk on the courses and life at le high and the standards of the insti tution dr emery pointed out that as a financial investment noth ing could exceed the results obtain ed through money spent upon a college training george begge 94 a classmate of w r okeson related numer ous incidents of his college days an incident ever foremost when recalling undergraduate days was when while playing second base for lehigh he overthrew to first allowing a runner to score and losing the annual series to lafay ette edwin quier of the class of 91 followed with another pep in stilling talk ralph kinsey 07 author of hail to lehigh harry kauffman 10 and ralph kocher 13 also spoke w r okeson secretary of the alumni association was the last speaker of the evening he spoke of lehigh s part in the great war thirty per cent of all lehigh men participated in the conflict which does not include the men aiding the government engaged in tech nical pursuits a large per cent of war materials were manufactur ed by concerns headed by lehigh men okeson spoke at length upon the deeds of david mckelvy peter son the first american ace and ralph o'neil 19 another ameri can ace ; harry johnson and don ald maelssac 17 the latter win ning distinction with the engineers at cambrai in the first conflict in which american troops were en gaged music games smokes and re freshments concluded a meeting full of ' ' pep which will bear fruit in the form of freshmen next september the inkwell will hold a social meeting this evening at 8 o'clock friday may 2 at st peter's parish house all lutheran stu dents are cordially invited to at tend seniors pay up the senior classbook section of the epitome is to go to press on monday may 6th seniors who have not paid the 11 dues by that time will be excluded from the book the money may be paid to either j l rosenmiller manager or r w ludlow chairman more men are needed for broad jump and hurdles delta tau delta ; mr payrow at taylor hall mr stahr at alpha chi rho ; rev robinson at price hall rev schwartz at drown hall rev murray at phi gamma delta mr bowen at phi delta theta ; dr beaver at kappa sigma ; mr cort at delta phi and rev fuller at sigma nu these same men will speak at the same places next week when the final chapter of the book will be discussed sam webb made his initial appearance on taylor field as a twirler wednesday afternoon and succeeded in handing the muhlen berg college nine an 8 to 2 defeat allowing only five scattered hits and striking out eight men the allentown collegians presented a rather weak line-up and the game was replete with errors by both teams it looked as if the contest would be rather close until the fifth in ning when the brown and white team batted around and put the game away with a seven run lead two runs having been scored al ready in the third and fourth in nings every man on the lehigh team succeeded in getting a hit off phillips with the exception of glen while coffin and webb drove out two singles apiece and maginnes drove out a triple and two singles for the visitors anderson played the best game with two hits to his credit and a spectacular catch 0 coffin's foul fly phillip's the visitors twirler had little of the puzzling nature on the ball and was lucky to get off with as mild a defeat as he did neither team scored in the first two innings although it looked as if lehigh would tally in the first when beck and maginnes both singled after savaria had struck out but a fast double play on webb's liner to phillips ended the inning in the third herrington flied out to begin the inning but glen was hit by a pitched ball beck was safe on shook s error and the former scored on maginnes second hit a single to right in the fourth coffin reached first on an error followed by wy socki and herrington singled fill ing the bases coffin scored a minute later on a passed ball but this ended the scoring for the in ning as neither glen savaria or beck could produce the needed hit to bring in wysocki and herr ington the big rally came in the fifth when five runs were scored on hits by webb thompson coffin wy socki's double a walk to maginnes and savaria s long fly to left field the visitors scored in the sixth when anderson got on first by wy socki's muff stole second and scor ed on an overthrow to third by glen in trying to catch him on phillip 7 s attempted sacrafice green singled in the seventh went to second on a sacrifice by lazarus and to third on a foul fly to glen and scored when thompson
