lawrence was forced to cancel last wednesday's base ball game with seton hall owing to the heavy rain on tuesday night and the soggy condition of the ball field the next home game will be on saturday afternoon when honus wagner s carnegie tech nine will meet the brown and white team on taylor field at 3 o'clock wagner who is probably the best known ball player who ever wore a uniform is coaching the pittsburgh collegians this season and has developed an exception ally strong team out of the mater ial on hand in the early spring there are few baseball coaches in the country who know the game any better than honus and it is certain that a close game can be expected as the lehigh nine is in fine shape at present and anxious to get back to their early season stride johnson who seems to be back in form will probably be coach keady's choice to do the twirling the presence of winterhalter and mathag back in the line-up will be valuable assets to the team as both men are speedy outfielders as well as heavy hitters the probable line-up will be savaria s.s ; mathag c.f . ; beck or winterhalter 1.f . ; maginnes r.f . ; webb lb ; thompson 3b ; coffin 2b.;herri*gton c and johnson p fellowships for study in sweden burro here soon the last of the discussion group meetings of the year were held on wednesday evening they have extended over a period of six weeks and were entirely successful a call of a world task in wartime ' ' by j l murray was used as a guide in these discussions and the last chapter on the call for a full mobilization of christian forces was discussed at this last meeting the first part of this chapter shows that the war has revealed the possibilities of thorough mobil ization america realized that a thorough and efficient mobilization was necessary and not until she set out to mobilize her industry capital transportation food fuel science and man power did she gain her maximum strength the result of this mobilization have been very plainly shown in the way in which america co-operated with her allies and helped to win the war the second part dealt with the point that the church is capable of similar mobilization for her world campaign intelligence is a prime factor in this movement and the college men of this country sliouid eiiugavoi to do ili.ei.l uuiiost in helping this mobilization of spiritual endeavor then too as has been shown by past war ex periences the leadership of the nation must also be mobilized last but not at all least the material re sources are to be mobilized in the third part great emphasis was placed upon the need of a world campaign for the church which demands the full mobiliza tion of christian strength it is because of the dimension of the un dertaking and its manifold diffi culties that few christians realize the importance of such a move a new hour has struck in christian affairs and the urgency becomes more and more apparent finally the aim in view and the rewarding character should awake all christ ians to the paramount aspects of such a mobilization of forces epitome progressing the second game scheduled with the swarthmore college lacrosse team will be played saturday afternoon at swarthmore pa this game bids fair to be one of the best games played this season after the victory over stevens last saturday the locrosse team will be in fine trim for this return game the first game played this year was with swarthmore in which lehigh won with a score of 4-3 stevens tech's lacrosse team which we overwhelmed last week managed to hold swarthmore to a 5-3 loss coach hunter is expect ing to run the same line-up against swarthmore which he has per fected in the last few games and is expecting much of them nesselbush who was the chief scorer in the tech game is out for a record score this week reynolds who was the all around man in last week's game is also expected to aid in bringing home a big victory coach hunter has been drilling the attack men considerably in goal shooting for although the per centage of goals from shots at tempted is fairly high he is not satisfied until the men are sure shots the team-work of the attack men when around the goal is one of the team's strong points and it is expected that this game will put the finishing touches on for the hopkins game to be played here on the 17th of may straub and davidson who sub stituted in the where they will contest with those collegians in a track and field meet tomorrow afternoon from the try-outs last friday it is evident that lehigh will bid fair for victory under the close at tention of coach kanaly the men are quite in form and anxious for the coming games with schultz pengelly and riebe entered in the sprints the brown and white should glean several points in these events capt doan will he heard from in the 880 and carr will un doubtedly give a good account of himself in the distance runs track sports are held in high esteem at swarthmore and they are entering an experienced well-bal anced team for lehigh to make a good showing against them would be a great credit to school men and coach last y.m.c.a meeting the american - scandinavian foundation is made administrator of ten fellowships for technical study in sweden four in physics and chemistry two in hydro electrical engineering two in metallurgy and two in forestry and lumbering applicants should be between 20 and 30 years of age ; each fellowship is for one academic year and provides 1000 the holders are required to study in these subjects in sweden applications should be filed be fore june ist and should be ad dressed to henry goddard leach secretary american-scandinavian foundation 25 w 45th street new york city the undersigned is cooperating in the allotment of these fellowships joseph w richards tennis meet cancelled the last y m c a meeting of the semester will be held next sunday evening in drown hall the speakers will be registrar walters and k m bevier presi dent of the senior class registrar walters who has had varied experiences while holding a captain's commission in the army has not definitely announced the subject of his address a musical program will be fur nished by student talent manager lawrence has just an nounced the batting and fielding averages for the first eight games from these percentages it is seen that the team slumped off consider ably from the fast pace with which they went through the first three gamies the team shows a batting average of 242 in comparison to the early mark of 304 although there has been a severe drop the mark is creditable considering the crippled condition in which the nine entered several of the games the fielding percentage has also suffered a fall for the team has an average of 572 the many errors seemedi to come thick and fast in the games away from home of the players that have played the full eight games webb leads with an average of 323 ; maginnes is right behind with 313 while beck and mathag with seven and five games played are walloping the horsehidie 356 and 421 respec tively every one who has played all the games has comlmitted at least one error but beck mathag and john son have come out from all their contests unscathed the batting averages : notice notice the latest indications are that the first number of the burr which w t as to have been issued during junior week will appear by the end of next week a short time after the date of issue had been announced it became evident to the board that publication at that time would be impossible recently there has been more unlooked-for delay which has delayed publica tion this is the first number to be issued for a year and an entirely new magazine had to be built up which meant a great deal more work than if practically the same advertisements were used and were already set up with nothing but copy to be supplied difficulty in making the business and advertising arrangements was another factor in the delay once started burro expects to have its other issue of the year that dur ing alumni week out on time the first of a series of two games between the lehigh and lafayette freshmen will be held at easton tomorrow afternoon at 3 30 all frosh should attend the annual banquet of the tau beta pi society was held at the sun inn last wednesday evening under the auspices of the alpha chapter of pennsylvania the le high university chapter the ban quet was very well attended by members of the faculty tau beta pi men residing in the bethlehems and undergraduate members of the society in a short talk dr h s drin ker spoke of the war work done by lehigh men in the past four years and toldi of the progress of plans for the alumni memorial building prof b l miller spoke of the re lation of success in college to suc cess in after life and prof j l beaver indulge di in a few remi niscences prof e h williams jr the principal speaker of the evening spoke of the honorary societies of the collegiate world some drift ing into purely secret societies which took in a few and were based on a man's characteristics rather than his attainments at the op posite extreme were those which eared nothing about the character and based their choice on class standing with the first class there was continuity of purpose but their work was negligible because secret with the latter there could be neither continuity of purpose nor interchange of ideas as the mem bers were elected at graduation only in establishing tan beta pi the combination of both was attempted by the selection of the first men so that they could be associated with the seniors for a part of the year and thus carry to the rest of the delegation the peculiar traditions and 1 present aims of the society as prof williams was the vale dictorian of his class he felt at liberty to inaugurate such an honorary society as a member of phi beta kappa he knew that in a few years the petition for a chapter of that society would be granted he also knew the then policy of phi beta kappa was applied to the technical men of one of our leading colleges and felt that such a policy would prevent the majority of the high standing men at lehigh from gaining membership if a new so ciety were to be started it must be done at once as it would never do to permit the sneer that it was com posed of men who could not get in to anything else as lehigh was a great technical school it must be a technical society he therefore determined for the sake of speed to take nobody into his plans until they were com pleted with the aid of the late rev klose of the moravian publi cation concern special type was purchased and the various forms of stationery and 1 the certificate were designed these all had the trestle-bent which was chosen the badge of the association and the first was filed out of the solid by the well-known fraternity jeweler mr newman of john street new york continued on fourth page in the meantime the university records were searched and the class all class and college pictures are ready and obtainable from k m bevier 19 tel 1989 the tennis meet which was to be played w r ith moravian college wednesday afternoon had to be postponed to a later date due to rainy weather in all probability the meet will be played near the end of may on saturday the lehigh racquet artists will buck up against the navy team the team which will leave friday for annapolis will probably be made up of estes hall v wilson and mercur work on the epitome is pro gressing rapidly but there is still much to be done before the actual work of printing and binding the book can be begun the page proofs are being made and when these are completed and have been corrected the publication of the book will commence it will take about two weeks after the printing of the book is begun before it will be ready for sale with one or two exceptions all of the cuts have been photo-en graved and are ready these usually are the cause of delay and with them out of the way the book should be issued very nearly on scheduled time june ist this year's volume is illustrated with many new drawings and its chief new feature is the military section the
