vol xxvi no 43 five inning contest easily won by 1922 next game with wyoming seminary dents give short talks registrar walters speaks stu with swarthmore local track team unable to cope prof peck of lafayette talks on mining in colorado and mexico last few minute's play lehigh gets winning point in class of 19 holds final get-together score 80-32 score 2-l and four seconds lehigh gets three first places nesselbush and reynolds score simpson gets qoaufor swarthmore on thursday afternoon the freshmen met the sophomore base ball team and treated them to a short but effective trouncing the game was called after five innings but that afforded ample time to al low the freshmen to show the sophomores that as baseball players they are excellent students dorkin pitched for the sophomores and struck out six mien while boltz struck out five of the 1921 men in cluding dave pfeiffer who was put in as a pinch hitter in the fifth the sophomores showed very little efficiency in the field and on the bases and managed to get only one safe hit from boltz schneider played as well as any of the team securing eight put-outs out of twelve schonhardt the sopho more's left fielder spent most of his time in the bleachersi catching long flies and then dropping them at the psychological moment kozy person and parker hit'dor bin for two-base hits and pasolli walloped the ball over the fence for a perfectly good circuit drive this is the first home run that the freshmen have driven this year on sunday evening may 11 the local y m c a held its last meet ing of the year in drown hall during the evening jagels 21 rendered several piano solos which were very well played several students who have been active workers in the y m c a during the past year gave short talks k m bevier 19 was the first to speak his talk centered on the work of the v during the past year and the possibilities for better ment and development in the future this year has been with out doubt one of the hardest years to contend with at college the rage of influenza which congested college work and college life and then the institution of the student army corps both held back work and college activities it was un fortunate that the present student body had to contend with these fac tors but the situation was unique and could not be helped after this the college came back and things began to drop back into their old channels until at the be ginning of the second term one would hardly know that lehigh had been through it with the rest u the colleges the y m c a the senior class had their last big get together in the form of a banquet held at kurtz s last fri day evening k m bevier presi dent of the class acted as toast master the speakers of the even ing were prof ezra bowen iv prof h r bosey reiter and lawrence rupp a graduate of muhenberg the keynote of each speech was friendly advice to the men who are about to enter the world conflict for existence prof bowen empha sized the importance of the engi neer in coming world affairs prof reiter urged that the spirit of ser vice and sacrifice should be taken to heart in the struggle and mr rupp including both of the points of the previous speakers added the never die spirit exemplified by so many big men in the world's history after the main part of the ban quet social entertainment took up the rest of the evening this in cluded also a musical specialty which proved agreeable to those present the banquet committeeconsisted of m a man ley oiiarrman ; o t hunt t c o'neill and c n w tomlinson baseball owing to the adverse weather conditions last saturday which were responsible for the cancelling of the carnegie tech game le high did not have a chance to even up her games lost and won so far lehigh has w r on four and lost five contests the next game will be on saturday with delaware college at newark delaware tennis courts as has been stated before the tennis courts near the physics building are for the express use of members of the tennis team and those who are challenging members of the team new bulletins on friday the game with sec tion d taylor hall was postponed on account of rain as was also the game with lafayette fro-sh which was slated for saturday afternoon at easton next saturday the team in charge of coach bartlett will travel to wilkes-barre to play wyoming seminary the score for thursday's game freshmen continued on third page epitome elections the competition for business manager of the epitome for next year has been won by p ritchie the assistant manager for next year will be j w hood who was second in the competition there were four men out for the positions throughout the competition and they all did good work junior banquet next the league game with the swarthmore lacrosse team was staged at swarthmore last satur day afternoon lehigh winning by a score of 2to 1 the condition of the field did not allow the playing of either team to show up to a very great advantage the game was hotly contested from the beginning the winning point being obtained only five minutes before the final whistle at the very beginning of the game lehigh managed to get a lucky start being much quicker than their opponents and after the first minute of play nesselbush scored the first goal ten minutes later swarthmore returned the trick making the score a tie at which it stayed until the last five minutes of play when reynolds who was playing in tip top form during the second half scored the winning goal for lehigh by a pass from mitman the field was the heaviest field played on this season being cover ed with mud and in places with a sheet of water thus preventing any chance of fast playing on ac cuont of slipping during the first half both teams seemed evenly matched neither being able to gain any decided advantage over the other during the second half le high's attack seemed to hit their old stride and had several chances to score which the slippery field and swarthmore s goal keeper pre vented from being effected even on the heavy field the brown and white's squad showed their superi ority over swarthmore in success ful passing the playing of jenness and wey was also very on thursday evening professor peck of lafa yette college gave an illustrated lecture on his mining experiences in colorado and mexico mr h b tinges 12 also gave a short talk on the bituminous industry in the east professor peck commenced his lecture by explaining that all min ing problems demand a practical application of geology and that many companies did not realize the necessity of studying the geology of the region in the silvertown and san juan districts of south west colorado a large number of failures in mining ventures oceur ed as a result of not taking the geology of the prospective region into full consideration the main points of his speech are in part as follows : one of the most important prob lems facing a mining company in this region is the problem of trans porting the ore from the mine to lower levels the only satisfactory manner of transporting the ore is hj n'irc trains and the majority of the mines have adopted this means of transportation the rock formation of this region very clearly indicates a series of volcanic flows in several places there are indications of the presence of extinct volcanoes this region is rich in gold and silver ore and although it has been worked for years without doubt there are still many undiscovered rich ore veins snow slides are common in this region and in constructing mining buildings in the mountains they have to be careful in the selection of sites they usually try to build the buildings close to the side of the mountains many of which are over twelve thousand feet high so that in case of a snow slide the snow will sweep over them mining in mexico is more dif ficult than in the united states be cause of the undeveloped character of the country the factors of the quality and accessibility of the ore many times outweighs the quantity to be found for in the majority of cases this ore has to be carried over the mountains on mules backs mexican mines have been worked for years and the early inhabitants of the country used crude methods around most of these mines can be found immense slag heaps which still contain a large percentage of ore however it must be left there because of the poor means of trans porting it to better refineries mr tinges talk on the bitumin ous industry dealt with the fact that since the anthracite fields are limited and being exhausted the coal operators are developing the bituminous coal areas unlike the drift mine operations of small owners many of whom are farmers the large corporations are using the shaft methods of mining this form of coal continued on third page during the years 1915-16 there was a large output of bituminous coal because many farmers were able to work the drift mines how ever this did not continue because has held together remarkably well and the administration of the past year is to be congratulated for their good work the future is even more bright and under the new officers lehigh's y m c a should be one of the most active of its kind ' ' raymond walters registrar of the university then spoke he dis cussed the attitude of mankind to wards religion during the past war and its effects on civilization a war is one of the biggest factors that nations as a whole have to contend with during the past it has seemed the war was a necessary evil and that when it came everbody had to grin and bear it as civilization has ad vanced and people tried to better conditions they tried to avoid war in several cases this succeeded arbitration was affected and the countries concerned apparently satisfied however this last war came so suddenly that no one thought of or had time to start arbitration and avoid it so every body got together to beat the ger mans continued on third page during such a war and under such conditions virtue truth and right are apt to be shattered it is very hard for a soldier in the trenches to live up to the highest ideals due to the great physical and mental strain of such a life where his business is to kill other men he has a hard time keeping up those ideals which go to making what is termed good character the way that the american troops stood up under the strain is re markable they did the best for their country and they tried hard to remember god a man under shellfire and seeing all the horrible and pitiful results of modern war fare is sorely tempted to think that their is no god for if there
