hotel allen 7 p.m wednes | day may 28 1919 show your spirit i •••••..•■••.••■•••••■•••••■■•■.•■■••■•..•■.•■.•..•..•■•••■•"••••■■•••*' s new scholarships last civil meet parade in honor of local divisions register ready for distribution at the administration office r f johnson 19 gives student paper on the lincoln memorial six members lehigh men f m huffman 20 has croix de guerre last thursday afternoon by faculty decree the student body was granted a half holiday in honor of the returning local over seas batteries the day was one of rejoicing and the enthusiastic paraders in the afternoon totaled upward of 6000 the nucleus consisted of battery a which had returned earlier that day battery b which bad come back two weeks previ ously the former men of co m and the men of the 103 rd ammu nition train who had been return ing in groups diuring the previous few 1 days the leaders of the two main contingents were : capt w j houston co b ; capt samuel w laird battery a capt j j shonk 02 former head of co b lehigh was represented among the home coming heroes in that five of the veterans were alumni or for mer students they were capt s w laird e.m 15 lieut a w lewis 18 t s loeser 16 r j bobbin 20 a e eberman 20 and f m huffman 20 s gold berg 20 who for four months had been a base censor in france was also on the campus thursday and marched with the lehigh division he had not been connected with the local batteries f m huffman was awarded the croix de guerre with star di vision citation for distinguished action while signaling under fire in open field continued on third page the parade the various divisions of which were led by twenty bands and four drum corps was repre sentative of the enthusiasm dis played 1 by the bethleheraites as a whole the lehigh university con tingent furthermore savored of the bethlehem bach festival which mr pitts sanborn of the new york globe termed a nation al institution will be held in packer memorial church on the university campus on friday and saturday june 6 and 7 lebigh will then be host to music l.o ers from all parts of the country practically all of the tickets for the saturday sessions are already sold and the demand for friday seats exceeds anything in previous years the program of the first day in cludes eight cantatas as follows : 4 p.m the lord is my shep herd i with my cross-staff gladly wander o teach me lord my days to number and the lord is a sun and shield 8 p.m bide with us strike oh strike long-looked-f or hour ' ' thou guide of israel and o light everlasting ' ' on the second day at 2 p.m and at 4:30 p.m the choir will sing bach's greatest composition the mass in b minor the soloists will be friday so prano mildred faas ; alto emma roberts ; tenor nicholas douty ; bass capt charles trowbridge tittmann saturday soprano florence hinkle alto merle al occk tenor mr douty ; bass capt tittmann a special arrangement has been made by which students of lehigh university may obtain admission to the chapel standing room at a charge of fifty cents the connection between the bethlehem bach choir and lehigh university is an intimate one dr j fred wolle conductor was for many years organist of the univer sity mr t edgar shields the present organist of the university church is organist of the choir dr drinker is president of the bethlehem bach choir the ex ecutive committee of the choir in cludes mr a n cleaver treasur er mr w a wilbur and mr c m schwab of the university board of trustees and also vice-presi dent emery professor richards registrar walters and dr w l estes of the university sophomores attend the annual banquet juniors hold class banquet on wednesday afternoon may 28th the brown and white team will encounter the villanova nine on the home diamond 1 ', — that is if the weather will be kind enough to permit it this will be the first chance that the team has had in over two weeks to show whether it has improved or deteriorated with the vacation naturally it has not been idle all this time for coach keady has been putting them through strenuous three hour prac tices every afternoon in fact the team was well primed for the la fayette game and since they were disappointed there they will have to take out their spite on villanova in this game the nine should strike its stride again and begin the winning streak which will carry them through the lafayette games with the highest honors villanova has a team which cannot be scoffed at and yet weak enough to afford quite a practice contest so far this season they have been beaten by delaware college north carolina and several other schools m that class they have a fine in field and their batting is good nevertheless pfeiffer or johnson whichever pitches should be able to hold them fairly safe johnson who for several games was totally out of form on account of a sore arm is now back in the twirling game in fine shape and although he may pitch a couple of innings it is certain that keady will save him for the game with perm on decoration day as is generally known this latter game is one of the biggest of the season and it would be very unwise to waste johnson's arm in the villanova contest with prospects of a good clear week and with the team in the pink of condition the diamond men of lehigh should come back strong on wednesday the probable line-ups are villanova robinson cf mc andrews ss mcgeehan 3b mur ray lb hertzler c mcdermott rf kane cf cronin 2b delo herty or jones p lehigh matthag cf savaria ss thompson 3b webb lb her rington c ; courses for teachers ; and a course having such electives in the third and fourth years as will make it possible for the stud ent preparing for engineering to obtain his technical degree in two years of further study the staff in business adminis tration will be increased and the course will be constituted as a separate college the new arrangement groups the following courses in the college of engineering : civil engineer ing mechanical engineering me tallurgy mining engineering electrical engineering chemistry chemical engineering and ship construction and marine trans portation the former separate courses of metallurgical engineer ing electrometallurgy have been united there has been a modifi cation of these courses designed to meet present-day conditions among the most important has been the addition of work in econ omics accounting and business law in most of the engineering courses there is a re-arrange ment of the oourses in mathe matics english and modern lan guages the new schedules in all courses apply to the present fresh man class class of 1922 and to the class entering next fall class of 1923 beginning with september 1919 the tuition in the college of arts and science will be 150 and in the course in chemistry 200 the register includes official an nouncement of two new scholar ships the dupont scholarship and the joseph mann prickitt scholar ship the largest enrollment in the history of lehigh university is re corded in the list of students which shows a total attendance for both terms of 901 regular students this includes about 125 men who returned to the university largely from national service the sum continxtkd on fourth page on account of the heavy shower which occured on saturday after noon the eagerly anticipated game between the brown and white and lafayette nines could not he played to the bitter disappointment of the spectators who had assem bled to witness the contest a heavy shower broke forth and covered the diamond with several inches of water half an hour later the game was called off and the teams and the spectators reluctantly de parted the contest will be staged at a later date so as to keep the series intact this is very fortun ate as it will enable the team to get in practice through an additional game or two before the final strug gle the sophomore banquet will be held at the hotel allen allentown on wednesday may 28th at 7 00 o clock although tickets have been on sale for almost a week the members of the class have not taken them as quickly as was expected last year a smilar condition existed and there was a big rush at the door for tickets causing much incon venience all men are urged to buy their tickets now from the committee and not wait until the last minute it is up to every man to show his class spirit and be present on that night the list of speakers was very carefully picked and the speeches will be sure to entertain w m long chairman of the committee announces that the honorable archibald johnston dr henry s drinker and j e gheen will be present as speakers bosey n m emery john toohy and ken bevier will also be the guests of the class there will be a meeting of the y m c a handbook committee in drown hall wednesday may 28 at 4 p.m the committee con sists of n a newell 20 chair man r s ott 20 h g som mers 20 d m clarke 21 a h wilson 21 ; p c barthold ' 21 and c p gooding 22 this meet ing is for the purpose of organiz ation and it is essential that each member be present the commit tee will welcome any suggestions on the part of the student body for the improvement of the hand book all suggestions should be written and be handed to either mr j m frey or n a newell the class of 1920 held its annual banquet at kurtz restaurant last friday evening about fifty were present when about seventy were expected but to those who were there the evening proved a thoroughly enjoyable one the banquet which began at 8 p.m was held in the large private dining room and the banqueters were seated at small tables which accommodated ten each music was furnished by the jazz-bo or chestra of six pieces favors were black leather notebook and card case combined in which was insert ed the printed menu continued on fourth page the speakers were dr drinker prof h r reiter and m b tate prof mckibben who was also to sneak was unable to be present dr drinker had received an urgent call to pittsburgh and had to leave early in order to catch a night train to that city so he was lehigh brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday may 27 1919 nine to meet villanova bach festival coming june 6 7

p c barthold ' 21 and c p gooding 22 this meet ing is for the purpose of organiz ation and it is essential that each member be present the commit tee will welcome any suggestions on the part of the student body for the improvement of the hand book all suggestions should be written and be handed to either mr j m frey or n a newell the class of 1920 held its annual banquet at kurtz restaurant last friday evening about fifty were present when about seventy were expected but to those who were there the evening proved a thoroughly enjoyable one the banquet which began at 8 p.m was held in the large private dining room and the banqueters were seated at small tables which accommodated ten each music was furnished by the jazz-bo or chestra of six pieces favors were black leather notebook and card case combined in which was insert ed the printed menu continued on fourth page the speakers were dr drinker prof h r reiter and m b tate prof mckibben who was also to sneak was unable to be present dr drinker had received an urgent call to pittsburgh and had to leave early in order to catch a night train to that city so he was lehigh brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday may 27 1919 nine to meet villanova bach festival coming june 6 7 |
