lacrosse squad wins final game bethlehem pa tuesday june 3 1919 u of p game intense thruout lehigh noses out penn in 11 inning thriller price five cents lafayette track meet wednesday lacrosse season meets 22 team by 7=6 score lafayette freshmen beat lehigh perm state takes match from varsity 4=2 u of p likewise s=o the brown and white lacrosse squad finished their season last saturday afternoon with the game against the university of penn sylvania squad this was the last of the intercollegiate games and gave lehigh second place lehigh was beaten out of first place by johns hopkins who defeated the brown and white team two weeks ago the game with the red and blue squad on saturday was very close from the very beginning and an extra period was necessary to enable lehigh to score the win ning goal the game started with 1 a jump for lehigh jennesis scoring the first goal three minutes after the ball was put in play and it looked as if lehigh would run up a large score the ball was in perm s half of the field nearly all the time but the several attempts which were made to register goals by jenness and nesselbush were without suc cess the game became rather rough on both sides and men were continually being sent out until the first half ended with the score itoo in lehigh s favor continued on third page the second half was very much the same as the first the ball travelling continually from one end of the field to the other and neither team being able to score the lafayette-lehigh track meet will be held wednesday afternoon june 4 lafayette has won every lehigh dual meet for the last three'years and it is up to the lehigh squad to stage a come back there have been hard work outs during the past week ond the team is on its mettle to meet the old rival although subject to chiange the following men have been chosen on the merit shown in the trials of wednesday may 28 two men are entered in each event despite attempts to start the meet earlier it will be run off at freshmen travelled to easton on saturday only to be beaten in a hard-fought game on march field by the freshman baseball team of lafayette the lehigh 22 men outplayed their op ponents throughout the game over coming a two run lead and coming out ahead until close to the finish then lafayette brought in their winning run in the end of the ninth inning tollin pitched for the lehigh team and was a credit to himself and to his team allowing only two bases on balls and striking out nine lafayette players rufe captain and second base man for lafayette knocked two circuit drives deep into left field over pasolu's head ziegler their catcher knocked the ball for two singles and a double lafayette brought in a run in the first inning which was tied by our men in the first half of the third inning they forged ahead with two runs in the third one of which was made up by our men in their turn at the bat in the fourth they followed suit in the second half of the fourth and repeated it in the sixth totaling five runs to our two in the first half of the seventh lehigh came back with three runs tying the score both teams brought in a run in the eighth holding the score to a six six tie the visitors failed to score in their last inning at the bat and the lafayette boys brought in their winning run after having two men out lehigh 22 00110031 o—6 lafayette 10210101 i—7 the official lacrosse season at lehigh may be said to have opened with the arrival of coach talbot hunter although practice had been going on for a time without any supervision coach hunter had played lacrosse in canada and was consequently ready to make the best team possible of the material on hand nearly all the men who played positions regular ly this year had played last year and were much more capable in handling sticks which seems to be one of the main qualifications the opening game of the season may come under the class of an exhibition game for it was in reality for our junior week visitors this game played with swarthmore on april 23 resulted in a 4-3 victory over our oppon ents our next game was away with the navy and we were de feated by a score of 4-1 as the naval academy is not considered a member of the intercollegiates our chances for winning the cham pionship were still good on may 3 at home we won from stevens institute 9-2 and may 10 witness ed another victory over swarth more 2-1 on their own field but the collapse of our hopes came when our old rival johns hopkins trimmed us 7-2 on taylor field the johns hopkins-lehigh game usually decides the intercollegiate championship and a hard battle may always be expected this year we were more or less outclass ed by our opponents we were able to hold our own during the first half when the score gave neither side much advantage but when the southerners gained they could afford to take many chances which resulted favorably the season closed with the perm game may 31 played in our own stadium the final score was 2-1 after a hard fought extra period game nesselbush and reynolds scored most of the goals for the brown and white and captain jenness wey parker and mitman played a good consistent and sometimes spectacular game tli ere will be a short business meeting of the arts and science club and election of officers for the coming year at drown hall on thursday evening at 7 45 attendance of all b.a and b.s men as well as men in the busi ness administration is desired final meet of chemical society freshman class to banquet friday first get=together of 1922 to be held at kurtz restaurant addresses to be given by major sill and r s perry 88 election of officers the lehigh tennis team lost two meets one to perm state on friday afternoon and the other to u of p on saturday afternoon in the singles with perm state estes and wilson both won but lehigh was unable to win either of their double matches consequently perm state secured four of the six matches the u of p racquet men proved to be too much for the lehigh men winning five matches and the other match had to be called off in the perm state meet bayles formerly a lieutenant in the le high s a t c won the first set from estes 5-7 then estes took the match by winnig the last two sets 6-2 and 6-3 hall lost to baird in two sets 7-5 6-1 wilson lost his first set to ers kine 6-3 but turned on his op ponent in the next two sets win ning 6-3 6-4 mercur was unable to get warm ed up against cohen the latter winning in two sets 6-1 6-1 estes and hall battled against bayles and beard in the first set of their doubles the perm state men finally winning 10-8 the latter took the last set 6-1 wilson and mercur lost the first set to erskine and cohen 6-3 but the lehigh men took a brace in the second set and won 6-8 the chances for tie meet were then looking very favorable but the perm state men staged a come-back and won the last set 6-2 results in the singles estes lehigh defeated bayles perm state 5-7 6-2 6-3 baird perm state defeated hall lehigh 7-5 6-1 v wilson lehigh defeated erskine perm state 3-6 6-3 6-4 cohen perm state defeated mercur lehigh 6-1 6-1 results in the doubles : bayles and beard perm state defeated estes and hall lehigh 10-8 6-1 erskine and cohen pen state defeated v wilson and mercur lehigh 6-3 6-8 6-2 points : perm state 4 ; lehigh 2 in the u of p meet estes lost to kerr 6-1 6-0 . the perm man was probably the best player seen here this season making some very brilliant shots hall lost to haines 6-2 6-4 in the last set hall played haines practically to a draw but the form er won by making many hard and well-placed shots wilson playing pfingst lost his first match of the season the latter winning in two sets 6-3 6-1 mercur was the only lehigh man in this meet that forced a u of p continued the championship put up good clean play all season and are certainly to be congratulated for their showing coach hhimter gave a short re sume of the season he pointed out the fact that the squad put up a creditable game throughout the season in spite of the fact that there were not many men out for the squad and consequently there was little competition for places on the team the student body chief of operation in the chemical works at astoria which madie gas masks during the war he has just re turned from a remarkable trip through the chemical plants of the the freshman class banquet will be held friday june 6 at the kurtz restaurant at 8 00 p.m this is the first get-together of the class and every frosh should be out to support his class the entertainment will consist of good snappy speakers music and pro fessional entertainment show some spirit 22 and come out ! dr drinker and bosey reiter will be there and ken bevier also will attend tickets are on sale and may be obtained from glen hopkins eastman hughes beatty or gooding the sophomore class held a meeting wednesday may 28 in packer hall the matter of hold ing a calculus cremation was dis cussed and a committee will be ap pointed in the near future the following 1 men were elected to the epitome board j h alden a j barthold f w rheinfrank w h sayre j r farringon j c schonhardt a laffey and j h goodwin are all tied for the sixth and seventh men a vote will be taken at the next class meeting to decide which of these three will be on the board the next sophomore class meet ing will be held in the physics lecture room at noon thursday june 5 immediately after the regu lar physics lecture at this meet ing something more definite con cerning the calculus cremation will be announced nominations for class officers for the ensuing year will also be held playing eleven innings of the most spectacular and intense base ball seen on taylor field in several seasons the brown and avhite baseball team defeated the uni versity of pennsylvania nine by a 7 to 6 score on decoration day the game was witnessed by the largest crowd of the season and was full of thrills from start to finish playing an uphill game lehigh tied the score in the fourth and seventh innings owing to the timely hitting of coffin and mathag the former driving out four hits in five times at bat which were re sponsible for three runs neither team was able to score after th seventh until the eleventh when perm tallied one in the first half it looked as if this would be enough to win as beck first up in lehigh s half was an easy out but mathag came through with a beautiful djouible to right after maginnes had reached first on an error and sara webb put the game on ice by lining the first ball pitched to deep right center scoring mathag johnson who started the game for the brown and white pitched five innings of good 1 ball but owing to coach keady desiring to save him for the lafayette game pfeiffer was sent to the box in the sixth with perm two runs in the lead and succeeded in repeating his performance of last year by holding them at his mercy and keeping the five hits in the next six ininings well scattered dave was in by far the best form he has dis played this season and the credit for the victory is his while coffin m!athag webb and savaria each played spectacular ball in the field and at bat for pennsylvania strauss and warwick were the stars and their timely hits enabled perm to obtain their lead in the early frames of the game pennsylvania started off in the first inning when bohan the first man up drove out a double which fell only a few inches inside the right field foul line strauss laid down a neat sacrifice and warwick brought him home on a single to left lehigh tied the score in the second when webb's fly to center dropped in the midst of three red and blue players and after thomp son had advanced him to second he scored when mitchell threw to center field l in an attempt to catch him
