lafayette shut out in second contest saturday game decides series vol xxvi no 51 tie incurred in last game to be played off on taylor field contest marks close of success ful tennis season estes and v wilson not playing tennis season brought to close nine displays exceptional skill on march field on^last saturday support necessary score 2=o local squad wins three and loses four of the meets odds slightly in favor of var sity line=up same as previously lafayette noses out lehigh in relay race allows only five hits johnson shows up in good form muhlenberg track meet wednesday at allentown entries same as in lafayette meet muhlenberg has half mile record holder meadowbrook event won by one yard advantage lehigh beats old record the miuhlenberg-lehigh track meet will be held on muhlenberg s field at 3 o'clock wednesday afternoon june 11 while muhlen berg is reported as having a strong team the lehigh squad is well able to cope with anything the former can show the same entries which were in the lafayette meet last wednes day will probably run muhlen berg s star isi erb intercollegiate record holder of the half mile in the middle states association merkel and doan will be the entries in the race and a close contest is ex pected the m'u-hlenberg meet marks the close of the local track season the cinder path sport has received quite an impetus from the athletic committee this spring though the meets have not been particularly well attended by the student body coach kanaly had a large squad out during the entire spring with some promising material the lehigh relay team al though beaten in the one-mile re lay event with lafayette held at the meadow brook athletic and military carnival june 7 1919 did excellent work and deserve much credit this event is an annual one and has been held for the past several years in 1916 lehigh held the record of 3 32 2-5 which lafayette beat on safciirrtav a time of 3:30 this time was aided by the closeness of the race lehigh beat ing the old record with 3 31 1-5 against lafayette's winning time the event was an exciting one throughout haldeman lead for the brown and white andi touched doan with a two-yard advantage doan kept the lead till the straight away when kleinsphen passed him and touched crawford two yards ahead of doan brug'mann ran third losing two yards during the quarter but fought every inch of the ground merkel was anchor man for lehigh and ran a pretty race recovering about three yards of the ground from kunkle the finish was a fast spring and lafa yette hard pressed throughout came to the tape with a yard's ad vantage college meeting in an exhibition of baseball that has seldom been equalled in the lafayette series lehigh evened up for the defeat received last tues day by forcing the down the river rivals to submit to a 2-0 de feat last saturday the game was played on march field which was in excellent con dition after the previous day's rain and was witnessed by a large and enthusiastic crowid a special train carried some 200 brown and white rooters to east on and what they lacked in numbers they made up for in cheering as they com pletely drowned out their maroon and white opponents in the ad jacent stands saturday's contest was an en tirely different affair from that of five days before as the playing throughout was of the best with little umpire baiting and no un sportsmanlike playing which was in evidence in the first game johnson who was again coach keadiy's mound choice was at his best and was master of the situa tion at all times allowing only five hits two of which were of the scratch variety his two-base hit into the center field stands 1 also started the batting rally in the third which spelled victory for le high moyer who finished tuesday's game proved a worthy opponent for swede and with the excep tion of three hitsi bunched off him in the fatal third he pitched air tight ball and forced nine brown senior roster for examinations the senior examination roster is published below the schedule for the three lower classes has not yet been completed by the secretary of the faculty but will be in time for friday's publication the senior roster here saturday afternoon in a tennis meet although estes and vaux wilson were unable to par ticipate the two new representa tives for lehigh were p w hall and scofield both of whom put up a very creditable game the le high racquet men won five of the six matches f a hall easily disposed of beddow in two sets 6-0 6-0 hall played a brilliant game mak ing many hard and well placed shots mercur won his match from gates 8-6 7-5 although the score indicates some close playing never the less mercur always seemed to have the upper hand and was able to pull through at the critical moments p w hall was unable to get warmed up and lost his match to simmons 6-3 6-4 scofield playing his first match for lehigh defeated kistler in two sets 6-4 8-6 in the doubles f a hall and mercur easily disposed of beddow and gates 6-2 6-1 scofield and p w hall also won their doubles against simmons and kistler 6-0 6-4 results in singles : f a hall lehigh defeated beddow muhlenberg 6-f 6-0 mercur lehigh defeated gates muhlenberg 8-6 7-5 simmons muhlenberg defeated p w hall lehigh 6-3 6-4 scofield lehigh defeated kist ler m/uhlenberg 6-4 8-6 results in doubles : f a hall and mercur lehigh tennis season for le high the name of r m hinchman is announced to have been with drawn from the list of nominees for the position of sophomore president the voting for sophomore class officers will be held in drown hall wednesday from 1 to 5 o'clock with the muhlenberg tennis match the racquet season of 1919 has closed several of the meets had to be called off due to the numerous showers this spring this caused the schedule to be al tered and some of the meets had to be postponed several times the season opened with the de feat of haverford but the next week columbia turned the tables on the local squad with a 5-1 score then followed three weeks of rainy weather during which time the navy and rutgers meets were can celled and the moravian college meet postponed twice the mora vian meet was played off on may 23 and resulted in a 5-1 victory for legihh perm state and pennsyl vania both won in the matches the following week last saturday le high came back and defeated muh lenberg the whole squad played good consistent tennis througlioui the season v wilson showed up very well winning five out of six of the singles that he played estes who also managed the team did some fine enthusiasm for the lafayette game k m bevier opened the meeting prof bowen then made a short appeal to have every lehigh man get in college and show the old beat lafayette pep bosey eeiter then gave one of his inimitable talks which kindled the spark of enthusiasm that burst into flame at the game ken bevier following the remarks of prof bowen offered a prescription for the reestablishing of college life and customs special emphasis was laid on having every man study the epitome from cover to cover and to know who's who and what s what in college ' ' lafayette has fallen — and this despite the admonition in the last issue of the lafayette to get them again saturday the game last saturday restored the series to a state of equilibrium and it will be the share of lehigh supporters to see to it that the balance swings in the right direction next satur day the deciding game of the le high-laf ayette series will be played next saturday on taylor field and it would not be logical at all to sacrifice the last game through thoughtlessness and carelessness when everything is in our favor we should be animated still more and appear at this last game in force still greater at lafayette many things were in our disfavor — we had lost the preceding game we were on a strange field and we could not lo cate our cheering section in the most advantageous position this is all gone now and we should not be so inflated that overconfidence will bring us to defeat the scores of both games played so far show a neck to neck struggle but last saturday's game was un doubtedly to be taken as the cri terion when the playing of the re spective teams is to be considered whereas the first game resulting in lehigh's defeat was a rank comedy of errors the game in which lehigh was victorious was virtually an errorless game both teams played better ball it is not inconsistent to hold that lehigh's varsity having shown up as the better team in the game where both teams appeared in the pink of condition should romp away with the eastonians self complacency in the course of the next game it is certainly not inconsistent with the laws of the universe if we lose but we should not lose through lack of proper attendance and support should we put every effort into the game and lose w : e should have little cause for regret for we know that we are not in vincible but if this last game is de liberately threw away by some idolaters in our midst who worship the godsi of sleep and learning too continued on third page arcadia meeting new bulletins frosh banquet full of pep frosh baseball there will be a meeting of the arcadia in drown hall wednes day evening at 7 o'clock the freshman baseball game with pettie institute was cancelled inkwell meeting the final meeting of the inkwell lutheran club will be held friday june 14 at 7 30 election of offi cers the bureau of mines announces the following new publications list 68 june 1919 : bulletins bulletin 177 the decline and ultimate production of oil wells with notes on the valuation of oil properties by c h beal 1919 84 pp 4 pis 80 figs bulletin 179 abstracts of cur rent decisions on mines and mining reported from september to de cember 1918 by j w thompson 1919 166 pp continued on third page the freshman banquet was held on friday night june 6 at the kurtz restaurant in spite of the inclement weather conditions the spirits of the frosh flowed happily on as it was there were about seventy-five frosh present besides bosey reiter prof bowen f c bartlett and ken bevier the president of the class of 19 continued on third page and white batters to retire on strikes the same line-up was sent in to face the eastonians on saturday as that in the first game with the ex ception of third base ooach keady decided to place beck at the hot corner in place of thompson who seems to be in the midst of a slump and the former outfielder handled himself in great shape handling five hard chances without a boble and driving out a single in the third that scored johnson with lehigh's first run the entire outfield gave johnson the best sup-port possible and de serve equal credit for holding the rivals scoreless iterrington cought a beautiful game and made several specticular catches of foul flies be sides obtaining one of lehigh's five hits when he hit to center field in the seventh moyer started off in fine shape in the first by fanning savaria walk ing beck arid then forcing both maginnes and mathag to go out on strikes continued on third page wolbaeh first up for lafayette was retired on strikes having
