men desiring to enter the competition for numerals are requested to re port to manager willis on wednesday at 4:00 in the trophy room chemical society bears lecture yearling baseball prospects bright mr harry l fisher of the u s rubber company gives talk on rubber sixty men report to coach petriken for plebe class nine illustrated battery strong in order to encourage more men to compete in the inter class track and field meet on april 8 and 9 the members of the spiked shoe society have suggested that no varsity track athlete winning one of the four teen events should accept the first place gold medal the class point total will not be affected by this however the first four places will be scored respectively as five three two and one points all students whether on probation or not are eligible to compete the field events will be con ducted on friday april eighth and the track events on satur day april ninth the virtual winner among the upperclassmen and the first freshman to finish will become the first string candidate in his event for the rutgers dual meets all other runners in good scholastic standing may challenge these place men on april 20 it is in this manner that coach kanaly will decide who shall represent lehigh against the scarlet count felix yon luckner german war hero will deliver an address to the student body on wednesday afternoon at four o'clock in drown hall he will tell about his experiences in the war count yon luckner comes from an old aristocratic ger man family he attended a very famous german university but soon became tired of school and decided to go to sea dur ing the world war he was giv en command of a schooner count yon luckner had a small crew and there were no big arms on his ship they went disguised as a merchant vessel and displayed many flags whenever they saw the allied ships they displayed the flags and in this way were able to capture their foes count yon luckner will undoubtedly give a most interesting lecture on his experiences and everyone present will be assured of a most interesting time that evening after his talk in drown hall count yon luckner will deliver his lecture at the beethoven mannerchor at 8 p m last thursday night in drown hall approximately a hundred members of the fac ulty and their wives enjoyed a novel entertainment furnished by a combination of all the mu sical clubs of lehigh and dave fluharty's orchestra the uni versity ramblers the combin ed musical organizations com posed of sixty men rendered a most interesting concert just before the intermission the club played a novel num ber cleverly paraphrased which brought much favorable com ment and applause where do you worka-a-john ?" was play ed using the names of profes sors in each verse another feature of the evening was an introduction of la mille by the string quartet this was the first time this number a favorite of the flonzaley quar tet had been played by their quartet the program was pre sented in the following milam acting on ned wayburn's recommen dations although it is possible continued on page four a regular meeting of the omicron delta kappa was held last friday evening at the sig ma chi house after an en joyable dinner the business of the evening was taken in hand the question of omicron del ta kappa expansion was the first to be brought to attention petitions for chapters at the university of louisville and dickinson are pending and have been passed upon by the local chapter efforts are also being directed toward the in stallation of chapters at lafay ette rutgers perm and dart mouth a report was made by zug upon the feasibility of reinstat ing the honor system after a thorough discussion and inves tigation of the subject a mo tion was made and passed that the o d k should go on rec ord as being opposed to an hon or system at lehigh this was based upon the opinion that although the honor system if functioning properly is com mendable and a credit to a uni versity it would be impractic able to attempt to put it into execution at lehigh a motion was passed that it be recommended in the future the arcadia should supervise the freshman class elections which hitherto have come survey of the scholarship systems of all the outstanding eastern col leges this report revealed lehigh graduate talks to civils interesting bouts tin boxing meet three champs of last year's intra-murals retain titles h ellis 09 speaker at c e meeting thursday evening the lehigh valley section of the american chemical society was addressed by mr harry l fisher present research chem ist for the u s tire co at their meeting last friday eve ning a dinner was held at the hotel bethlehem prior to the address after which the meet ing was adjourned to the chem istry lecture room about sev enty-five members were pres ent to hear the address mr fisher a former profes sor at columbia university had been with the goodrich rubber company for eight years he took as his title rubber its chemistry and economics he gave some statistics on the amount of rubber used annual ly stating that 75 per cent of all rubber was used for tires and tubes the lecturer explained the special spraying process used by the u s tire co for solid ifying the rubber the sap from the rubber tree is sprayed onto a flat surface on which the vapor deposits in a form known as white crepe he then told a little of the chemistry of rubber continued on page four he next showed how planta tion rubber had replaced wild rubber showing pictures of a rubber plantation being started a vast wild area is burned off cleared and hoed and seed lings of rubber trees are then planted in this area in 15-foot squares the rubber seeds had been planted in a nursery and then transplanted after they continued on page four
