convenient list for reference for the old men and useful for the new men j mckay 17 renders several tenor solos the first college meeting of the year was held in drown hall last friday morning at 11 o'clock by the upper classes while the fresh men were atetending the hygiene lecture by dr estes in packer hall the first business conducted was the election of a college athletic representative at large and a col lege secretary e f wait e h covell and m a morrissey were nominated for college athletic representative at large of these e f wait was elected j b jacob and s b downey were nominated for college secretary and j b jacob was elected president jacob of the arcadia announced that the arcadia had decided upon a plan to be adopted in regard to enforcing college cus toms a committee of five men from the arcadia will be appointed to act with the sophomore class on all violations by freshmen of regu lations and college customs it is the duty of the upper classmen to report the names of freshmen vio lating the rules and college customs to j m straub president of the sophomore class due to the fact that h f shartle 18 manager of basketball and l-l dixon 19 assistant man ager of basketball have both left college j p ampler was ap pointed manager and c w war ner assistant manager to fill the places left vacant j b jacob made a call for more candidates for the lacrosse team all who desire to try out for the team should report for the fall kcrosse practice on the upper field it was requested that arcadia dues be paid as soon as possible these dues are payable to the rep resentative of each group j carlz announced that a course in military tactics will be held for the three uper classes on monday and friday at 4.15 p.m and on wednesday at 1.30 all those who take this course will receive credit for their gymnasium work r c alden announced that the burr room will be open tuesday and friday from 1.00 to 2.00 p.m for subscriptions and suggestions the annual fall tennis tourna ment to determine the university champion for the coming year opened last friday with matches in the preliminary and first rounds up to the time of going to press the results of the of the moravian seminary and col lege for women spoke on the sub ject first and last at the reg ular y m c a meeting held last sunday evening in drown hall dr clewell well known to many of the upper classmen having spoken in previous years his subject last year being follow a line w t as well received and his talk was en joyed by all he said in part : it is a pleasure i am sure to be allowed to be in the company of such men it is also a pleasure to the young ladies of our college to be in the company of such college men it is inspiring to be in a meeting of this kind publications of a university sometimes misrepre sent the life of the college man but the life of a student is a serious one i believe there is no life so serious none harder than the life of a student of course you might find some college men who become rather wild but i am speaking of the : ... ; y e serious man in college life i mean the christian young men of the colleges and universities turning to the thought of this talk i have summed it up in the words first and last it deals with the life of young people from the start to the very end of their life young people seldom think of these things in life yet these are the serious things to be thought of this mind of ours these thoughts of ours are the greatest things in our lives you young people can shape your lives accord ing to strength or weakness you can shape your thoughts according to the strength of the mind or of the weakness of the mind ' ' the difference between a crimi nal and an upright honest man is very little as an english preacher once said the only difference be tween these two types of men is the grace of god whether or not you have in herited weaknesses you can if you will overcome these and be respect able put this test to yourselves am i satisfied w t ith myself to night i do not mean the small habits that are hard to stop but the thing is are you satisfied with your ambitions your ideals your desires for the future ? ' these are the things that count if you are satisfied with these you are all right no greater man ever lived than jesus christ his works and acts are incomparably greater than any of the greatest generals we ever had his work was that of service and of doing things for others that's the thing are you satisfied do you feel that you are going to do things for others there is christlike service for humanity for many of the big men of this country question yourself am i doing the right thing am i following in christ's footsteps continued on fifth page ' ' gentlemen remember if you do the good pure upright things of life the christlike things and con tinue this through your life you will enjoy the things of life and there is a glory in store for you but if you take the low-down the lehigh s 1917 gridiron season opened saturday on taylor field with a 7 to 0 victory over the seventh infantry team composed entirely of men from various col leges who are now second lieuten ants at the army camp at gettys burg with the exception of their full back and star lanphier who is a graduate of west point and has received a commission of cap tain in the regular army the visitors w r ere outplayed at all times by the brown and white eleven but considering that they have only had three days practice and that without a competent coach they played a hard game and in the final quarter began to put up a better style of football a crowd of several thousand witnessed the game which though not replete with thrills was hard fought and well played consider ing it was the initial contest of the season the game though a vic tory was a costly one as mccarthy lehigh s brilliant left end was forced to retire in the second quar ter with an injured leg and may be out for several games pfeifer who was substituted for mccarthy was the only substitution for le high throughout the game and played a clever game on the de fensive the team which opposed the visitors was composed with two ex ceptions maginnes and spanga of men who were on last year's squad and though still a little weak in spots looks to.be one of consider able promise with a few weeks more practice the principle source of gain saturday was through consistent line plunging by halstead land and wysocki and several brilliant end runs by herrington the visitors were practically powerless on the offensive and consequently the ball remained in lehigh s possession almost en tirely but on the offensive they ap peared at a better advantage and evans and hull succeeded in get ting through the brown and white line and block several passes al though not consistently enough to greatly hinder lehigh continued on ftfth page the game started by wysocki kicking off to kirk on the 10-yard line who carried the ball 25 yards before being downed then fol lowed several vain attempts at line plunging and finally allen was forced to punt to herrington hal stead made the first offensive play of the season for lehigh by tearing of four yards through tackle then followed a 25-yard run around right end by herrington line plunging by halstead and land brought the ball to the 30 yard line where mccarthy gained 15 yards on a clever end around play line plunging again brought the ball within tw r o yards of the goal and on the next play capt halstead carried it over mc carthy kicked off to lanpier on s yard line who carried it back 15 yards the visitors then tried two forward passes but failed in both the first cheering practice of the year was held on last friday after noon and displayed a promising amount of lung power and vocal ac complishment among the fresh men there were 163 of them pres ent and they did very well consid ering the fact that there were prac tically no upperclassmen present the only way the freshmen can get the swing of our yells and songs is by learning them from the rest of us who already know them if some of the many cornetists in college would volunteer to play for cheer ing practice the songs could be mas tered much better and more quick ly anyone who is willing to help in this way should report to mckay or one of the other cheer leaders practice will be held at 4 o'clock on tuesday and friday of this week it is up to you upper class men who talk about the cheering here being poor to come out and make it better by helping the freshmen to lea-rn to yell the candidates for the freshman baseball and football teams for the founder's day sports have been working out on taylor field dur ing the past week the baseball candidates have had several good practices under the direction of scott and r mccarthy of last year's baseball squad w r hile the football candidates have been work ing out under the direction of j n kennedy 19 the candidates for the 1921 baseball team include al bertson liddle and hood catchers pfeiffer pitcher larsen rice boynton childs shaw dorkin wilson mould rourke saveria brown infielders hanlon mas sart hipkins nolan rathbone g
