relates how university was founded as the result of the offer made last spring by doctor drinker which placed the entire facilities of the university at the disposal of the government when desired the aid of the department of chemistry has been requested in connection with certain problems pertaining to the camp of the united states army ambulance corps in allen town pa professors chamberlain and long who have undertaken the first por tion of the work made a visit to the allentown camp on last wed nesday in order to confer with the officers in command the research which they will un dertake will consist primarily of dessicating operations pertaining to food-stuffs and also the problem of garbage disposal this work is probably the forerunner of still greater service for dr ullmannsays that the department will later un dertake broader investigations and research work on government sup plies thus thru the chemistry department lehigh is playing a very direct and important service in the cause of the country besides the government wor'k professor chamberlain has been en gaged during the summer in con ducting research for and super vising the operations of the new plant of the industrial limestone company in south bethlehem which manufactures hydrated lime this product is an improvement on ordinary lime for it is already slaked and therefore needs no fur ther treatment with water before using 1 the lime is slaked in a hydrator a large tank inside of which rotat ing ploughs mix the material with water which is sprayed on from above the industry is a new one in this section and the plant is so designed and operated that there are no waste products in the process the output of the plant will be used for industrial purposes such as agri culture rather than for building the first regular meeting of the lehigh university athletic com mittee was held in taylor gym nasium on october 4 the mem bers for the year 1917 18 are dr h s drinker prof n m emery w l with u s ambulance corps n taylor field was approved n agreement is to be made to give one-half of the receipts to the red cross peter boquel was engaged to fill the position of ' ' billy ' ' sheridan who resigned in june the price for the tickets for the lafayette game was fixed at 2.00 students can secure one ticket each for 1.00 upon showing their regis tration card according to the con tract on chinese students club held its first meeting of the year in the forum room of saucon hall last friday at 7.30 p.m the meeting was strictly a business meeting h tsai 19 was elected to fill the new r ly created office of manager it was decided by the members of the club to hold a banquet in the eagle hotel on the evening of october 10 the chinese national holiday arrangements were also made for student speakers at the eight meetings to be held during the year the officers of the club are : s d chang 18 vice-presi dent and treasurer t s sun 19 secretary c h wang 18 the following members of director of the expe dition of the oriental exploration fund of the university of chicago to babylonia gave a lecture en titled a thousand miles down the tigris river dr banks is known as a former american con sul to bagdad private secretary to the american minister to tur key acting professor of ancient history robert college constanti nople he is the author of birmya or the lost city of adab and several other books of travel and adventure in the east dr banks described his trip down the tigris from the head quarters at mt ararat down to the mouth of the river at the persian gulf the lecture was illustrated with many colored slides showing the aspect of the country through which the tigris flows pictures of the ruins of ancient nineveh and bagdad the people and their mode of living describing the country he told of a persian prince who when asked of the extent of his father's kingdom of persia replied my father's kingdom extends so far to the north that it is so cold people cannot live there so far to the south that people cannot live there the lecturer said that in bagdad the thermometer had gone as eigh as 159 degrees in the shade and it was actually very hard to live while in the north where it was mountainous the winter was bitter cold and the whole villages were shut in by snow the tigris is not alone in its long wandering to the gulf for there is its twin river the euphrates which flows along beside it all the way from a common source near mt ararat to a place below bagdad where the two join one of the principal sources of the tigris is the mountainous country of which mt ararat is the principal peak this mountain is 17,212 feet high and although in a torrid region is perpetually covered with snow near its summit climbing this mountain is an exceedingly difficult feat at the top is a tin box con taining the names of those who have been there among them is the name of james brice the speaker humorously said that he did not find noah's name among them the armenians live in this coun try along the upper waters of the tigris there were once 1,000,000 armenians but now there are but 250,000 left the turks having mas sacred the match for the brown and white eleven on taylor field last saturday and were de feated with very little trouble by a 13 to 7 score the day was an ideal one for football and as a re sult a large crowd was on hand to see the struggle the game though apparently closely contested as far as scoring was concerned was an easy one for lehigh and at no time did the visitors appear dangerous the latter s single touchdown was the result of a fluke when with only a few minutes to play mc namara who was substituted for nolan fumbled and gullick the visitors star tackle recovered the ball and ran 45 yards for a touch down woods then kicked the goal lehigh s scoring came in the second and fourth periods in the second quarter nolan who played a good game at quarter herring ton having been shifted to right carried the ball to the six-yard line after a series of line plunges by the baekfield and halstead carried it over from here in the fourth period herrington carried the ball over on the very first play after it had been carried to the four-yard line in the third quarter the game started by the visitors kicking off to lehigh johnson re ceiving the ball on the 20-yard line and by some clever dodging carried it back 14 yards herrington then gained eight yards through tackle and four around right a new play was then good for five yards by halstead after a forward pass was broken up herrington punted to ursinus on the 15-yard line and evans of the visitors carried the ball back 22 yards before being downed a series of line plunges netted the visitors a first down but here the brown and white line took a brace and the next two plays resulted in a loss after several more plays which did not gain consistently the visitors were forced to punt lind halstead and herrington then carried the ball down the field by line plung ing and end runs the quarter end ing with the ball on the 22-yard line score : lehigh 0 ; ursinus 0 the brown and white backs continued to take the ball down the field by crumbling the visitors line and after six plays halstead plunged over for the initial score herrington failed to kick goal several substitutions were made in this half savaria taking lind's place at half andmaginneis going in at right guard in place of early the half ended with the ball in lehigh s possession on the 32-yard line score : lehigh 6 ; ursinus 0 lehigh kicked off to ursinus to start the second half but the visi tors after several vain attempts to gain were forced to punt after a gain of nine yards lehigh fumbled and ursinus recovered the ball on the 45-yard line isen berg playing full back for the op ponents succeeded in gaining first down but again lehigh braced and the visitors punted to nolan continued on fifth page exercises in commemoration of asa packer founder of the univer sity were held in the university chapel saturday when w r butler m e.,'70 of mauch chunk spoke to an assemblage including beside the student body alumni from new york philadelphia and other cities dr drinker was in charge of the exercises mr butler was presented by dr drinker with the following words mr butler who has honored us with his presence here today is an honored and distinguished alum nus of lehigh graduating i n 1870 with the degree of m.e in the class which first completed a full four year's course at lehigh — the class of which dr price the president of our board of trustees was also a member — mr butler is today recognized as a prominent and leading citizen of our valley and state — a member of the board of directors of the lehigh valley railrad company and high in the councils of the episcopal church having been elected a member of the triennial convention of the church for every successive meet ing since 1901 mr butler said in part with each recurring october time there comes to us here in this busy restless valley a day upon which we are asked to leave the activities of the present and for a little while to look backward this is not easy the world of to day is making history so rapidly that already last week's paper seems archaic — the events of a month ago almost antediluvian but as the years roll and the cease less tides of men ebb and flow around these gray venerable ivy clad walls i am glad to hope and believe that always a goodly num ber of the sons of old lehigh will feel that upon this day we belong just here so that amid the cluster ing memories of earlier days we may render our grateful tribute to the life and work of asa packer you have often listened to the stiring story of his life it has formed the fascinating theme of many an address given here so eloquent so comprehensive that i cannot expect today to present any thing that has not been told before but it cannot be told to often after the packers came to mauch chunk they occupied a little house on the street called broadway and as my father's family afterwards lived in the same house for some years i as a boy well remember its coziness as well as its limitations with the gradual improvement in the for tunes of the packers they were able to refurnish the little home with some luxuries hitherto denied them long years after when mr packer's wealth enabled him to build his spacious mansion on the hillside near-by mrs packer loved to look back upon the simpler life and once declared that nothing which came in later year,s had ever given her quite the thrill of posses sion as a little haircloth sofa which continued on fifth page notice on wednesday immediately after the dismissal of the last morn ing class at
