glen warner's development of perfect interference allows pittsburgh 6 touchdowns largest attendance of season hears interesting topic well presented n the annual y m c a smoker will be held in the game room of taylor gymnasium on friday even ing the eve of the georgetown game this affair which is usually the biggest smoker of the year is the first one of its kind this season and should do much to instill the old time pep into the student body in preparation for the lafayette game the committee has secured an array of speakers that alone will make the affair worth a long jour ney to attend chief among these are men whose names occupy high places in athletic annals pike johnson of washington and lee university whose name is familiar to every college man will be on the program as a football player he needs no introduction for he was picked as all-southern champion and as all-american left tackle while he was playing it is certain that he will have some good dope about the game on a par with johnson is ernest m smith possibly not so well known in the east as he hails from the university of california smith was captain of california's swim ming team when it was admitted to be the best in the world he held the world's record for the 100-yard swim for several years there will be other speakers rep resenting other colleges other parts of the country and other sports the committee is keeping their names quiet until it is certain that they will be able to attend but it is certain that several other men whose names are top high in the realms of athletics will grace the program besides the speakers there will be a good entertainment and musi cal program and last but not least plenty of ' ' smokes ' ' crosscountry men now practicing daily the bethlehem prep football team beat the lehigh freshmen team last saturday afternoon on the prep field iby the score of 7to 0 the game was hard fought through out neither team seeming to have the advantage over the other al though the prep team gained more ground and had the heaviest line and backfield the latter s single touchdown was the result of a wild kick to the side by carpenter who was substituted for hess foster caught the ball and ran 20 yards for a touchdown mellinger kicked the goal e mellinger and foster starred for the prep team while hess played the best game for the freshmen the game started by the fresh men kicking off to the prep team which carried the ball to the four yard line by a series of end runs and line plunges here the fresh men held them for downs and hess punted to the 50-yard line after a few plays rockett intercepted a forward pass and took the ball to 1 the 30-yard line where the fresh men were held for downs after a few more plays the quarter ended the second quarter opened with the ball in the possession of the freshmen but they were soon held for downs and the prep team started a series of end runs mel linger carried the ball several times for large gains only to be brought to the ground by the good tackling of long the prep team was finally forced to kick the fresh men succeeded in blocking the punt but were penalized for being off side and had to return the kick melinger catching the ball ran it back 20 yards after a few more gains around the end the fresh men were penalized and the ball was pieced on the 10i-yard line here the prep team was held for downs and the freshmen kicked to the center of the field wood inter cepted a forward pasis and the half ended with the freshmen in pas seission of the ball the second half started by the prep team kicking off the good tackling of hess was the most noticeable feature of this quarter which ended just as harris inter cepted a forward pass and ran 30 yards before being tackled continued on fourth page early in the last quarter hess was hurt he remained in the game however until the quarter wa.s nearly over when he had to be taken off the field mellinger inter cepted a forward pass but the freshmen were held and hess manager sargeant of the track team is arranging a fine cross coun try schedule and all men in college who have done any work of this kind or who are interested should report for the team immediately to captain morrissey at the gym practice will be held daily at four o'clock beginning monday october fifteenth a special inducement for the men who report is a trip to perm state on the day of the lehigh state football game the other meets will be with muhlenburg united states army ambulance corps intercollegiates and lafay ette on the day of the lehigh-lafay ette football game • typhoid inoculation tennis tournament the second college lecture of the year given last friday morning in packer memorial chapel by joseph a steinmetz 00 on the subject the tools of warfare the men who make them the men who use them and we who pay for them proved of great interest to the large number of students and citizens of bethlehem who atended mr stein metz gave a clear account accom panied by appropriate slides of the aeronautical terrestial and sub marine devices which are of such great importance in the present war,and gave all who heard him a deeper insight into the nature of the warfare which is being waged in europe at the present time mr steinmetz who is president of the aero club of pennsylvania and a member of various technical committees related to problems of national defense is particularly well fitted to talk upon aeronautical subjects so that the part of his lecture dealing with the aircraft engaged in the present war was the roost interesting his accounts of terrestial and submarine devices was equally instructive so that all who heard him obtained a clear idea of the varied devices which will determine the winner of the great war mr steinmetz opened his lecture with an appeal to the audience to aid in the success of the second liberty loan and them proceeded directly to the main part of the lecture the birth of flight was in troduced by an illustration of the evolution of the bird from the flop ping mud lizards of the prehistoric ages the changing of their scaly body protection into primary feath ers broadened by centuries of growth and formed by the necessity of need as the monsters jumped from hole to slough and yearned to skim from tree top to nearby crag was brought out by the lecturer the conception of dr langeley's air drome and its similarity of form and lines to the antediluvian flap ing monsters was shown the wright brothers successful army test airplane flight at fort meyers va introduced the chapter of america's beginning of success ful aircraft building the various types of war airplanes were shown the speedy german fokker ma chine which answered the french nieuport was shown and described on the screen the great battle planes and the high speed bombing planes of the german gothe type that recently bombed london from an almost in visible height were described 1 . pic tures were shown of the wonderful new italian airplanes now in ameri ca as models for study and improve ment with their tremendous wing continued on second page in the first football contest in many years between the two teams warner's pitt team downed the brown and white warriors satur day afternoon october 13 at forbes field pittsburgh by a 41-0 score the first big intersec tional college football game of the year the pitt - lehigh contest created a great amount of interest in the western part of the state and the game was witnessed by 8,000 spectators the range of the score does not in any way show the va riety of football displayed the same wonderful attack which has carried the pitt team to twenty one consecutive victories in the past two years was superior to lehigh s defense and the brown and white team was forced to accept defeat the battle was hard fought from start to finish with lehigh fighting to the end miller the diminutive pitt quar terback cast gloom over the lehigh team with the first kick-off run ning 95 yards down the field for a touch down — a play that very sel dom occurs in football and which is bound to have a discouraging effect on the opposition halsted kicked off the ball sail ing high to the pitt 10-yard line and bounding back to the six-yard line on the run miller gathered in the ball and started up the cen ter of the field turning to the left as the lehigh forwards bore down upon him and outrunning the en tire team with carlson and goug ler as interference met herring ton on the 18-yard line here buzz made a game attempt to stop him but the three pitt men were too much herrington being thrown out by the interference after momentarily stopping miller and the latter ran over the goal line unmolestd neither herrington nor miller had to do anything other then or dinary in planning their attacks for the plays were largely of a simple nature there was little forward passing and pitt depend ed largely upon a criss-cross play with the guard carrying the ball around end for consistent gains the interference of the pitt team at all times was a marvel to the spectators for the pitt backs re peatedly circled the ends with per fect interference the outstanding features of the game from the lehigh point of view was the playing of wysocki mcdonald savaria a maginnes and herrington many times after passing through the lehigh defence the pitt backs were dumpted by herrington preventing a clear field for a touchdown for pitt aside from the general good work of the line mcclaren and gougler played the most consistent games the game had one great draw back it was long drawn out by minor injuries penalties and fre quent fumbling of the ball pitt being the big offender in all three departments the fumbling was inexcusable as the field was fairly fast and the ball dry the game by quarters first captain carlson of the continued on sixth page the final outcome of the tennis tournament has been somewhat de layed by the bad weather of the past week it is expected that the possession of the cup which is on exhibition at the gymnasium will be determined this week all present indications seem to point to the end that the last years varsity men will meet in the semi finals purple is as yet the only one in the semi-finals burns 20 will contest with warner 19 for a place in the semi-finals as does boynton 21 with johnson 18 and coffin 19 with tomkinson students of the university who have not been inoculated with anti typhoid serum are strongly advised to have it done this precaution is advised in view of experience and practice in recent years it is a desirable precautionary health measure the statistics of the u s army show a hemarkable decrease in typhoid mortality since the in troluction of this treatment dr w l estes jr consulting physician of the university will be at professors reiter's office in taylor gymnasium from 2-3 p.m wednesday to arrange for inocu lation of students who desire it the charge will be 2.00 per man the actual cost of the serum for three inoculations to a large gathering of lehigh men at the regular y m c a meeting last sunday mr freeman c havighurst a graduate of baker university gave an interesting and effective address on the subject a big business and its needs in foreign lands mr havighurst took post graduate work at the university of kansas and is at present general secretary for the student volunteer movement in new york city after a few years of seminary work mr havighurst intends sailing for china and taking up christian work in this great foreign field mr havighurst has spoken to a number of y m c a college men and other chris tian gatherings but this was his first apearance at lehigh he said in part : ' ' had you told your grandfather a few years ago that in bombay there would be 3000 automobiles within the next five years or that in india they would get singer sew ing machines in a short time what do you suppose he would have told you plainly a fool probably and would you blame him ? when in some countries oil cans are later changed into and used for buckets when the former purpose has been served and then they are turned into dust pans and when these are no longer service able the tin is used to patch the holes in the roof we can begin to appreciate what foreign countries are doing from the effects of the migration of western civilization when in japan mr wrigley of the famous chewing gum factory gives out 10,000,000 sample sticks of chewing gum to the people on the street you will begin to realize what is being done for the advance ment of western civilization ideas and you will say ' a big business ' when the women of china get a package of dry goods and there is given with this package a sample pack of cigarettes you will say a big business i .
