inspectors this morning in chapel the members of tau beta pi for mally pledged eleven new can didates to the honorary engin eering fraternity they were elected on tuesday evening when tau beta pi held its an nual spring balloting for candi dates the selections were made from engineers ranking scholastically in highest eighth of the class the candi dates have been chosen for scholastic ability qualities of leadership and unselfish parti cipation in extra-curriculum ac tivities so with such high re quirements as a standard it is no small honor to be among those chosen the men who were afternoon from two until six at the le high field the squad has just been cut from about fifty men to thirty leaving about two candidates for each posi tion and a staff of eight pitch ers coach jing johnson has been starting off daily practice with intensive drill in batting upon which point he is laying a great deal of stress follow ing this two teams are selected from the best material and a game is played all the pitch ers are given a chance to per form during the game and sub stitutions are made at various times so that everyone has an opportunity to get into action considerable attention is also paid towards knocking out flies to the fielders and hitting fast grounders to the infield men everyone is kept on the move all the time and practice never lags it is coach johnson's policy to give the men a thor ough work-out daily so as to have them in the best of condi tion when the actual season opens the taylor field diamond will be in condition in a few days and this will be a great aid since practice at present is being run under rather adverse circumstances announce date of speaking contest lacrosse players learn new system alumni show great inter est in revival of orator ical contest dr hopkins president of dartmouth college in a letter to the president of the dart mouth athletic council asked that serious consideration be given to a plan which would revolutionize intercol legi a t c football this plan would lim it players on the varsity teams to members of the sophomore and junior classes would give each college two varsity teams for major games : one to play at home and the other on the rival's gridiron and would have all coaching done by under graduates dr hopkins writes i would like to see the virtues of inter collegiate football protected and its vices extripated by friends of the game before its foes are given justification for demand ing and accomplishing its death the plan which he suggested was formulated after a series of conferences in which men vi tally interested in football most of them former players were largely represented sooner or later dr hop kins says the question is go ing to arise among the ameri can colleges with such insis tence that it must be answer ed whether the influent 0 of the intercollegiate football game as an institution is greater than all else having to do with the american college tour of northern new jersey owing to the consis tent efforts of manager eck stein the clubs will play at the woman's club in east or ange on may sixth at the mos que theatre in newark on may seventh and will broadcast from one of the large metro politan radio stations soon af ter those performances this tour will rival any pre viously taken by other student organizations the east or ange woman's club is one of the most exclusive and fashion able in that section and an af fair in its hall will give consid erable prestige to the musical clubs due to the hard work of the local management it will be surprising if all of the thou sand seats are not occupied on may seventh a concert will be given in the ball room of the new mosque theatre in newark this theatre has an unusually large seating capac ity and it is expected that the concert will be supported not only by the residents of new ark but also those people living in the vicinity this concert is being given under the auspices of the phi omega sorority which has chapters throughout this part of jersey fifty students will be taken on the trip they comprise the following organizations : the mandolin symphony orchestra under the mercy sakes as the name for the show to be pre sented this year with the assistance of sev eral of the alumni clubs scar lett has completed the schedule for the allotted week two performances are to be given in bethlehem on april 18 and an other on april 23 at liberty high school on april 19 the club will go to allentown to give a performance at the lyr ic theatre the alumni clubs of philadelphia and york are sponsoring performances in their respective cities with the present schedule there will be only one open date during the week the cast has been picked by mr wallace milam the coach from the recommendations made by ned wayburn many men from last year's show have been given parts the chorus of 16 girls and 8 men looks very pro mising and is learning the spe cialty dances quickly there candidates plan tournament held may 6 lehigh register just published rutgers swarthmore n y u and lafayette among teams to be met the annual inspection of the lehigh unit of the reserve of ficers training corps will be conducted by representatives of the war department on april 20 and 21 the inspecting of ficers will be major mcclain and major parker of the unit ed states army it is expected that the lehigh unit will repeat the splendid showing that it made last year by once more attaining a distinguished rat ing the first day of the inspec tion will be devoted to indoor work the examiners will vis it the class rooms to obtain in formation concerning class room work the general lay out of the armory with its equipment storehouses and other paraphernalia will be examined thoroughly on the day following the outdoor in spection will be carried out the entire unit will engage in intensive drilling and will pass in review before the examin ing committee the semors will events relay carnival is planned for may chemical society to hear lecture fraternity dormitory and club teams to com pete the lehigh university reg ister for 1927-1928 has just been published and may be ob tained at the dean's office at any time this publication is one of the most useful on the campus and the new edition in cludes several innovations which show a marked improvement over that of last year the register has included the new tuition fee for next year the revised entrance re quirements additional prizes and scholarships and on the whole presents a better organ ized publication than those of the last few years a feature in the new edition is the uniform curricula for freshman engineering students and arts and business men the substitution of physiography for engineering drawing in the bus iness curricula is also in the new publication several chang es are listed also in the elective courses for juniors and sen iors coach charlie lattig has been occupied for the past sev eral weeks in instructing the candidates for both the fresh man and varsity lacrosse teams in the fundamentals of the in dian game he has drastically changed the former system which bill o'neil fostered last spring instead of the tiresome running game of previous years the stick-wielders will employ a short quick passing attack included in a series of system atic plays for several days of each week he has given'a-black board talk to the attack candi dates illustrating his type of play next week he will prob ably give his time to the de fense men and in this way he will give an excellent founda tion to all of the aspirants for the team but lattig has not limited his coaching to the theoretical phase of the game each day he holds a scrimmage in which four teams a b c and d take part they have been ar bitrarily chosen to include the whole squad and in this way each candidate has been given an opportunity to struggle with the other candidates among continued on page four on may 4 and 5 a new ath letic event will be conducted by the physical education de partment this consists of a series of mile-relays for which all fraternities dormitories and clubs are eligible to com pete four men will comprise each team with each runner cover ing a quarter-mile suitable awards will be given and every organization in college is ex pected to be represented in this event although no varsity men may enter a large turnout will undoubtedly result in mak ing this an annual event about forty teams should compete and it is hoped that these re lays will be a fitting climax to the interfraternity and dormi tory indoor athletic tontests a large number of candidates met in the trophy room of the gymnasium tuesday afternoon to discuss plans for the coming tennis season candidates for assistant manager also report ed at the meeting a round robin tournament will be stag ed in the near future and the date will depend upon the wea ther conditions and the condi tion of the courts this tour nament will serve as the first tryouts for the varsity team the first six men being chosen to compose this squad these men will then play among them selves to determine their com parative ranking three regulars of last year's squad captain sullivan doty and trumbull are eligible and will probably form the nucleus of this year's team malloy a transfer who was ineligible last spring seems fairly sure of a berth on the squad among the other men sweitzer new hay ward and croxton are expected to make the best showing practice is being held every afternoon on the upper field for the varsity and freshman track teams coach kanaly is hold ing a series of meetings in the field house for candidates in terested in the various events appertaining to track individ ual instruction is given by the coach and in this way the faults of the men are easily corrected on friday and saturday april 9th and 10th an inter class meet will be held on the upper field many events are scheduled rub her its chemistry and economics the lehigh valley section of the american chemical so ciety will have the pleasure of hearing dr h l fisher at its next meeting on march 25 dr fisher who has been the chem ist for the united states rub ber company for a number of years will speak about rubber its chemistry and economics this lecture marks the first of a series of talks to be given during the remaining part of the semester the lehigh val ley section consists of the en tire chemistry department and several other men prominent in the field of chemistry the talk which will take place at 8 o'clock in the chemistry lec ture room is open to everybody engineering students are espe cially urged to attend this meeting alumni are making an effort to revive an activity which has been sadly neglected in recent years by the student body this activity is the oratorical con test which formerly was an important event on the univer sity calendar in order to en courage men to enter the con test the alumni have offered prizes of 100.00 to the win ners it has been suggested that the competition be called a public speaking contest and it will be open to all member of the student body professor luch professor of public speaking will have charge of the contest assisted by the members of the english de partment any of these men will be glad to render any ser vice possible to the
