university mr frey has obtained a creditable list of men to act as leaders of the discussion groups and expects to complete this list within a few days when it will be made public many of the men who acted as leaders last year have again been secured while the list also includes some men who ar^e new to this work continued on fifth page the members of the mining and geological society were given a rare treat at their first meeting of the year last friday evening in williams hall when dr benjamin l miller professor of geology ad dressed them on the subject the geological puzzle in addition to his main address dr miller also gave an interesting demonstration of the action of the rare metal pol onium on other minerals causing them to glow in the dark a short business meeting of the society w t as held before dr miller's address at which j m carbonell 19 and m e johnson 18 were nominated for the position of secretary left j vacant when j a holmes 18 left i college to enter the officers train ing camp in his address on the geologi cal puzzle dr miller presented a subject which has puzzled ameri can geologists for many years in coconino county in northern cen tral arizona there is an enormous depression in the surface of the earth about 4,000 feet in diameter and 570 feet in depth which is known as meteor crater there have been many theories advanced as to the cause of this so-called crater and many geologists have visited it in an effort to solve the puzzle of its origin dr miller was there during the past summer and was therefore able to give the so ciety first hand information in re gard to it there have been in all eighteen different theories propounded as to the origin of this crater but all but two of them have been conclusively proved as unsound after many years of careful observation and argument it has been shown be yond a doubt that the crater is not of volcanic origin so that the only two theories left are the meteor theory which claims that an enor mous meteor struck the earth at this point and buried itself in the earth and the steam explosion theory which maintains that it is due to an explosion of great quan tities of steam from the interior of the earth dr miller considered both these theories in detail and gave not only his own ideas on the subject but also the ideas of other eminent geologists who have made a careful study of the matter dr miller first took up the me teorite theory and presented the fresh from victory over lafa yette and with great display of confidence 1 at the start of the game muhlenberg's football team was easily humbled by the brown and white eleven on taylor field last saturday afternoon by a 47-0 score the allentown collegians were clearly and decisively out classed by the brown and white team from the very first whistle and at no time was the ball in muhlenberg's possession in danger ous territory in fact until the beginning of the fourth quarter when lehigh s team was composed principally of substitutes muhlen berg had the ball in their possession only three times and succeeded in making only two first downs the lehigh team showed con tinued improvement in offense in comparison with that shown in the lebanon valley game and in the few plays that muhlenberg had the ball the lehigh line presented a stone-wall defense gains in sat urday's game were made from every quarter though end runs contributed the greater part time after time aided by good inter ference wysocki and herrington tore around the ends for 15 to 20 yards while savaria and maginnes ripped up muhlenberg's line at will the team showed its first suc cess with the forward pass sax man at left end negotiating several while one resulted in a touchdown when wysocki threw the ball 25 yards to herrington who dodged through the remaining muhlenberg team 15 yards for a touchdown the most of the scoring was done in the first half the score at the end of that period being 41-0 at the beginning of the second period the lehigh backfield was composed in two cases of substitutes and later half the team had been re placed yet the team kept the ball and succeeded in adding one touch down to the score the first touchdown was scored a few minutes after play started on a series of line plunges the ball being carried over by wysocki of subsequent touchdowns all but two were the result of long end runs by herrington and wysocki one touchdown came as the result of a forward pass and another in the second quarter when young picked up a punt by herirngton fumbled by anderson muhlenberg's quar terback and ran 15 yards for a touchdown the seventh touch down was made by savaria on a four-yard plunge through the line in the second quarter the general improvement in both offensive and defensive of the brown and white team is to be commented upon it seems that the team has at last found itself picking individual stars of last saturday's game is a hard propo sition wysocki in his first game at fullback showed that he is at home there repeatedly he made long gains around the ends and through the line scoring three touchdowns herrington played continued on fifth page prof h r reiter head of the department of physical education has issued a statement concerning the physical status of the fresh man class based on statistics ob tained in the examination of the freshmen prof reiter deplores the fact that a large number of the members of the class are not physically fit and blames this on lack of proper physical training and development in the prepara tory schools he claims that more men do not go out
