the speaker at the y m c a meeting held in drown hall last sunday mr chuan has just re turned from a visit to china and in his talk he discussed the pro gress of democracy in china and our diplomatic and commercial re lations with the chinese people mr chuan's speech in part is as follows : on the 29th of april the president of china entertained all the graduates of american institu tions of higher learning at the im perian palace in peking men and women of all ages and classes en tered the x forbidden city where during the manchu dynasty tres passing was punished by death there the president addressed them from the steps of his home on the relations of china and the united states ' he then came down into the crowd and shook hands with every person present i was one of the three hundred and fifty present on this occasion and my parents were also there when i stood in that imperial palace and shook hands with the president of the chinese republic i was more at ease than when two years ago i entered the blue room of the white house and shook hands with president wilson this may serve to show how strongly democracy has been carried out in china the president of china in his address expressed the need of closer ties between china and the united states the future of china lies in the hands of the men who are being trained in the american universities and the americans ought to help the chinese students in every way the reward for this help will come in the opening of chinese com mercial markets to americans and giving them the opportunity of supplying four hundred million people with the necessities of life china has had a great awakening and in her reconstruction the manufacturers of the united states can supply the materials to build a modern china the monopoly of this far east trade was undoubtedly one of the causes of the war for there was active competition between the british and germans to secure the trade in the oriental markets the united states has made no at tempts to obtain this trade and it is the duty of the american people and every university to try to es tablish such trade relations there are some lehigh men in china now who are doing great work one is a mining engineer and another who graduated from here about ten years ago is inter ested in a railroad running from canton to hongkong which is one of the most important in china nevertheless we need more men the spirit of internationalism which the fighting nations hope continued on fifth pagr outfighting the perm state team from start to finish on state s field gained more ground than lehigh due chiefly to the work of way their diminutive quarterback but their attack lacked the punch when the brown and white goal was endangered and they went scoreless in his mode of attack herrington out generaled way and victory can be laid chiefly to this fact buzz herrington registered the only touchdown of the game state started out like a whirlwind on the kickoff and soon had the ball in midfield here lehigh s line held and wolfe was forced to kick herrington received the punt and after streaking his way down the field for 55 yards to the 10 > i a llixs he was finally downed here perm state's line offered a stone-wall defense and on the fourth down wysocki passed the ball 11 yards to herrington and he dropped just over the goal line for the touchdown spelling defeat for perm state the only other score was made by mccarthy with a field goal from the 15-yard line after perm state's team had held the brown and white team once more for three downs all the scoring was done in the first half and neither goal line was in danger during the second half except at one point where lehigh s line held on the 8-yard line hard tackling close following of the ball and prompt acceptance of all chances thrown their way by perm state's mistakes won the game for lehigh saxman and young sifted the opposing inter ference time and time again and threw the perm state backs for losses the defensive operations of young at right end was the out standing feature of saturday's game state used an odd formation for end runs in which they always had their runner guarded by four and five men but on each occasion young flanked the interference and threw the man frequently for a loss he and saxman were down the field like flashes under kicks state s forwards and
