stewart to talk of food conservation new dates for bach festival which will again be held in university chapel men who have been reported for breaking rules must appear food conservation is the title of a lecture to be given by professor j l stewart at 11 o'clock friday morning in the chapel prof stewart who is the chairman of the food supply de partment of the bethlehem com mittee of the public safety com mittee of the commonwealth of pennsylvania has made an ex tensive study of the question and is well fitted to lecture on this subject the 1918 bethlehem bach fes . tival will be held in packer mem i orial chapel on friday and satur ] day may 24 and 25 these dates , were fixed at a meeting of the ex ( ecutive committee of the choir last thursday evening in the office of s the moravian seminary and college \ for women special interest is at ( tached to the meeting inasmuch as , the festival will be given one week j ', earlier than usual this change was made as a trial to meet the '. singers to new york and return for the mid-winter concert with the new york philharmonic ■orchestra in carnegie hall a • report upon the forthcoming trip was made by r w walters who . has charge of r w walters in the absence of dr h s drinker ' president of the choir the chair was occupied by dr emery , students of the university who ; are able to sing are earnestly de j sired as members of the choir both for the new york trip and the festival next spring converting first liberty loan bonds the lehigh eleven easily de feated the heavy team from penn sylvania military college on tay lor field last saturday by the score of 34-6 that which was ex pected to be a fairly hard fought game turned out to be a rather listless encounter lehigh practi cally gained at will especially around the ends where herrington maginnes and wysocki made many long runs these men and saxman at end and johnson at tackle play ed the stellar roles the whole team played a consistent game scoring at least one touchdown in each quarter the only fault that could be found was that the brown and white seemed to be weak against a forward passing game horlacher the visitors ' quarterback was the only man who could gain consistently for p m c in only one period the second when they scored their only touch down were the visitors dangerous ii r t i.ii.j.'ii .. iri..i,..i.i'!.i!jt ir.,1 r iil i ift'^nimiiiui i.m .'„.,. i 20-yard line and the ball was ad vanced to the 30-yard line a long forward pass was successful and herrington deprived the visitors of a touchdown by a pretty tackle by a forward pass and several short runs the ball was carried to lehigh s 13-yard line after two unsuccessful line plunges the cadets scored a touchdown on a forward pass they missed the goal lehigh scored one touchdown in the first second and fourth quar ters and two in the third quarter maginnes scored three touchdowns herrington one and savaria one mccarthy kicked off to start the game the ball rolled over the goal line and was brought into play on the 20-yard line the p m c backs made several long gains but then the old defense tightened up and the visitors had to punt her rington ran the ball back eighteen yards by a series of line-plunges and off tackle plays the ball was carried across the opponent's line maginnes making the final plunge mccarthy missed the goal mc carthy kicked off and after several short gains the cadets tried a place ment kick but failed wysocki and maginnes brought the pigskin back to the p m c 38-yard line and the quarter ended here the score being lehigh 6 p m c 0 a few the regular y m c a meeting last sunday evening in drown hall this was dr andrews first visit to lehigh and all who heard him hope it will not be his last his long experience and thorough ap i preciation of the values of friend 1 ship made his talk a very interest ( ing one mrs g a butterworth ( delivered several soprano solos ( which were well received by those ] present j in his talk dr andrews _ dis * tinguished between friendliness j and friendship and showed how ] friendship is the more sacred he ] explained the individual and the f social aspects of friendship and the divine friendship or friend < ship with god and pointed out how each one helps a person through li e '_._ j dr andrews spoke in part as follows : the idea of friendship has been brought before us to a very large extent recently we hear of students friendship war fund which is nothing but an expression of our friendship for the men in the prison camps and shows how our young men and young women are behind the men in the army friendship and all that goes with it is a big thing the present war will help to make the future world one of more friendly rela tions we do not want to go into the war with a spirit of hate be cause if we go through the war without hating the world will be more friendly when the strife is over there is a difference between friendliness and friendship by friendliness we mean facing the world and wishing everybody well thus friendliness is an attitude of optimism and not an attitude of pessimism or indifference one's life can be framed in terms of opti mism as it is a habit of the mind — to look on the world in a cheer ful way and to be cheerful cheer ful people are the salt of the earth and make the world go round friendship is different from all this a friend is one with whom you may give and take not to give and take in the idea of merchan dising but in the idea of an ex change of help or happiness a good example of friendship is found in the home where a human being at birth is turned out a human soul to get an idea of religion you must analyze human friendship any real friendship introduces the people who participate in it into new spheres of value a friend's life becomes a part of your life and a friend helps to put you in a new field a person gets knowledge through his friends and also through friendly relationships friendships are the result of in drown hall about sixty couples were present which was an unusually large attendance for the saturday evening dances through the efforts of the dance committee appointed by the ar cadia burt lloyd's jazz band of new r york city was secured to furnish the music for the evening which was exceptionally good this band consisted of violin cello traps saxaphone piano and banjo specialists and displayed more pep than has been shown here by an orchestra in some time down town men form permanent organization johnson re-elected captain of tennis team a meeting was held in drown hall last wednesday afternoon by the students residing in town for the purpose of forming a perman ent organization any student not represented in another living group is considered a member of the down town ljving group h r walters 19 was unanimously elected presi dent of the group and h s hiller 19 was elected secretary at a recent meeting of the mem bers of last year's tennis team m e johnson 18 was re-elected captain for the following season and r r coffin 19 manager the schedule for next spring is now under w r ay and matches with u s naval academy johns hop kins u s military acodemy and rutgers are contracts with the united states holders of bonds of the first liberty loan and of interim cer tificates therefor have the right to convert such bonds or certifi cates at par into an equal par amount of bonds bearing a higher rate of interest should the united states before the termination of the present war issue any bonds bearing a higher rate of interest this right of conversion is to be exercised within such period and under such rules and regulations as may be made by the secretary of the treasury secretary m-cadoo has pre scribed the terms and conditions governing the conversion of le high cross country team won second place in the middle states inter collegiate meet held under the auspices of lafayette college the meet was won by lafayette with 32 points lehigh just nosed out muhlenberg with 43 points to the latters 44 only one lebanon valley runner was entered while the swarthmore team which was scheduled to race did not put in an appearance w a carr ran a spectacular race for lehigh and finished second forty seconds 1 behind captain rus sell of lafayette fisher boyd wilson and arthur were the other four men to place for lehigh finishing in the above order carr was well toward the rear until east on was reached when he un corked a sprint which took him past all but the leading man wilson put up a fine finish and succeeded jr ]> n oj-.:iiff mo-pv)a yp mninl on t-iot"t by two seconds thus gaining the required one point margin over muhlenberg for second place the run was held over a five and one-half mile course starting at the northampton country club and following the william perm high way to easton up college hill to the lafayette campus and finishing on the quarter mile cinder track the highway being concrete made the running very difficult college hill proved a severe test of the en durance of the runners coming a;s it did near the end of the course this is the second consecutive time that lafayette has won the championship the meet is held over their own course however one to which their men are accustomed the time of the winner 36.06 is eleven seconds better than the former record made last year by mcgrath of lehigh after the meet the
