second place falls together with second and third places were what brought lehigh and yale to the fore after the preliminary round lehigh had four men who qual ified for the semi-finals mc govern reed heilman and lehr in this round mcgovern pulled something of a surprise by defeating kaiser of perm state a veteran of two years artic explorer takes audience to north pole capt donald macmillan gives lecture on life among the esquimaux the regular spring election of tau beta pi will be held with in the next two weeks those who are in the highest eighth of the junior engineers are eligi ble for this election junior engineers who are in the sec ond highest one eighth will be eligible at the fall election at the meeting of tau beta pi held last week discussion was also held on the naming of an editor for the lehigh review this editor will be elected at the next meeting of the fraternity tau beta pi has just made public an eligibility code which is used in its elections of mem bers and which is given below it is the purpose of the so ciety to mark in a fitting man ner those who have conferred honor upon their alma mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as un dergraduates or by their at tainments as alumni distinguished scholarship while the primary requisite for admission must not be consid ered the sole criterion after the scholastic require ments have been fulfilled the selection shall be based on in tegrity breadth of interest both inside and outside of en gineering adaptability and un selfish activity we consider that true integ continued on page obtaining only fourth place in the point score rutgers team came up to ex pectations and repeated its vic tory of last year by completely overwhelming the field of en tries with a score of 45 points against 40 points collected by the four other competing col leges the real contest was staged between lehigh lafayette and delaware in a keen battle for second honors lafayette crash ed through with 14 points barely nosing out delaware by a half-point margain lehigh followed with 11 1-2 points and swarthmore brought up the rear with a single credit continued on page four coxe swam a great race for lehigh in the 200-yard breast stroke losing by inches at the finish to brown of rutgers who was so hard pressed that he collopsed after the race and was pulled out of the water hayes did well in the fancy div ing by gaining a tie for third place against very strong com with the advent of spring the varsity and freshman track candidates are practicing daily on the upper field cinder-path in preparation for the difficult schedule which is to be encoun tered this year coach kanaly is carefully supervising the conditioning of his charges so that they will be in good form by the time they clash with rutgers on april 23 prospects for a successful season are rather bright many veterans are again available and should form a nucleus for a well-balanced team a num ber of sophomores in addition to several men who were ineli gible to compete formerly are showing much promise although there are various places on the squad still to be filled this is particularly true in the cases of the high jump javelin throw and the pole vault events clayton demattia and beer are prominent candidates for the sprints billmeyer and lasher are the mainstays in the quarter-mile run the former will also compete in the furlong dash j cox lehigh's sole middle atlantic states in tercollegiate champion heads the list of the half-mile aspir ants randall roberts lau dig and starkey are participat ing in this event the cross country stars make continued on page four lehigh brought its wrestling season to a close by finishing in a deadlock with yale for first place in the intercolle giates last saturday the out come of the meet was not de cided until the very last match a bout for second place between blunt yale's heavyweight and littell a victory for littell in this match meant a champion ship for lehigh a fall by blunt a victory for yale and a decision in favor of blunt a tie after parrying for sev eral minutes on their feet lit tell succeeded in bringing blunt to the mat blunt shortly af ter came out from underneath and although he could not throw littell he managed to stay on top for the remainder of the match this won the decision and brought his team's total up to fourteen points the same number as lehigh's this is the first time in the history of the intercollegiates that the result has been deadlocked in addition syracuse and cornell tied for second place two of last year's champions took part in the meet both of whom were victorious captain reed of lehigh who had mov ed up from the 115 pound class to the 125 pound and capt miller of yale who successfully defended his title in the 158 pound class reed had little tennis activities begin this week a lexander hamilton club will meet dr paul r heyl physicist of the united states bureau of standards was invited by the university to give a lecture in commemoration of the life of sir isaac newton newton's death occurred two hundred years ago on the twentieth of march dr heyl is widely known for lectures and books on physics and relativity and also for his research work in connection with the weight of the earth on the subject of rare metals especially plati num dr heyl's name has be come noted his name has not only appeared in numerous pa pers but the american maga zine has recently featured an article of his his lecture at the university was one of the most scholarly ever delivered here it was made on the occasion of a com bined meeting of various stu dent organizations and was well attended by not only stu dents but many of the faculty members as well dr heyl's interesting lecture was entitled the student of nature he discussed the mo tives of students and the char acter of great investigations of natural phenomena the de sire for applause and interest in practical philadelphia a noted historian will be present this speaker is an authority on eliz abethan history invitations have been extended to the eng lish department especially to students studying elizabethan literature to be present at this meeting which will take place early in april flunk outs not to be admitted scandal number of burr on sale the inter-dorm basketball league is rapidly drawing to a close after a very successful season section c is now lead ing the league having won six games and lost one while sec tion b is running a close sec ond with a record of five wins against two defeats sections d e and price hall are prac tically out of the running for championship honors these teams are very closely grouped together in percentage of games won and lost section a is at university in a movement to raise the entrance requirements of lehigh it is generally felt that this new rule will not on ly benefit the university but also the undergraduates since there will be fewer poor stu dents to restrain the progress of the other men the awaited scandal num ber of the burr is now on sale at the principal stands in the city the humor and art work in this issue are particularly entertaining warren stoltz editor of the burr is desirous to have more competitors trying out the business competition is also op en and all sophomores interested in it should see herbert w mccord in the burr office some time during the day several new changes have been planned in the business course next year dr caroth ers expects them to alleviate many faults in the present cur riculum and to add materially in making it one of the best business preparation courses obtainable the engineering drawing and descriptive geometry cour ses have always proven to be bothersome and perhaps unpro fitable to the freshmen these subjects will not be required in the curriculum next year phy siography a sophomore require ment under the present regu lations will be placed along with physics chemistry and biology as a freshman elective seniors will not be required to carry a history course on their roster and only twelve hours of it will be necessary for grad uation business men will have to carry but two required courses in their last year their electives may be chosen from a large and varied group of sub jects several new professors will be added to the staff next year and a few new and attractive courses such as transporta tion marketing and business forecasting will be offered baseball practice is being held every afternoon from two until six at steel field at the present time there are seventy men who are trying out for the various positions coach jing johnson is stressing batting and fielding practice every day and is gradually whipping a team into shape it is probable that the squad will be cut next week in order to give him a chance to concentrate upon the more promising players red nevins who begins his fourth season on the squad is working out daily he has his position well sewed up on the mound are brady hesse and roberts brady a southpaw from last year's team is showing good form and will no doubt make the team hesse who played so well on last gave a very in teresting lecture on thursday evening in the liberty high school auditorium in which he stressed the fact that the es quimaux are a race of intelli gent people his lecture was made more interesting in that it was illustrated with eight thousand feet of film depicting the life in the artie regions captain macmillan told of the excellent work being accom plished by the moravian mis sionaries in labrador he gave an interesting out line of his voyage from wiscas set me the starting point of the macmillan expeditions all the way up to within seven de grees of the north pole by means of the films the intelli gence of the esquimaux was revealed giving the audience an opportunity to see these peo ple at work and to see the won derful work that they do such as harpooning sailing their frail sealskin boats and the manner in which they construct their igloos captain macmil lan stated that it was remark able how these people shut off from the outside world are to day one of the greatest classes of people on the earth unique pictures of some of the animals in alaska were shown the most exceptional of which was the defeat of two esquimaux dogs by a bird an other picture of a musk-ox charge on a dog is probably the only picture of its kind in existence pictures showing the exploits of the expedition within the interior of labra dor were also very interesting ideas of
