tive and timely lecture on the sub ject of food conservation pro fessor stewart who is the chair man of the food supply depart ment of the bethlehems has made an extensive study of the question and speaks from authority beginning the lecture the speak er told of the campaign which was carried on by the secretary of agri culture for an increased agricul tural production for the year 1917 and of the campaign now being started for the year 1918 the present season has advanced faj enough that the situation may bl guaged somewhat accurately a a short college meeting was held at noon yesterday at w r hich it was announced that the celebration of i&k.q victory ow y j not include a bonfire as has been the custom in previous years the hustling committee ' of the ar cadia decided that it would be un wise and unpatriotic for lehigh to set a bad example for the rest of thej3ommunity by wasting fuel es pecially in view of the very acute shortage of fuel at the present time dr drinker gave a short talk in which he commended the action of the student body in foregoing the bonfire and urged the students to do nothing in the celebration to antagonize the townspeople house party guests no thanksgiving game continued on third page running dodging and plunging their way up and down taylor field an saturday last for touch down after touchdown coach keady s well prepared brown and white team trampled the maroon and white colors of lafayette un der foot completely outclassing the easton collegians in one of the most remarkable lehigh-lafayeftte games seen in a quarter of a cen tury and winning by the over whelming score of 78-0 way back in 1890 an ancient lehigh team manhandled the eastonians 66-6 and for twenty-seven yearf until the middle of the fourth quarter of lsa^urdiay*s gtt^e^tm^'siiote'ns never been equaled or surpassed the lafayette team made a miserable showing of college foot ball against the powerful attack of the brown and white team time and again the lehigh backs tore through the lafayette line and circled the ends for long gains amid the rousing cheers of the le high cheering section captain ty halsted not entirely recovered from a broken shoulder led his team on to the field at two o'clock and immediately the battle was on halsted kicked off to lafa yette and retired on the first scrim mage a maginnes taking his place it was not long that the score was to remain 0-0 for less than two minutes after play started young broke through the lafayette line and tackled smith behind the goal line registering a safety soon afterward saxman blocked a punt by smith and young fell on the ball behind the goal registering the first touchdown for lehigh play during the first quarter was ragged on the part of both teams but beginning with the second quarter the brown and white team opened up an attack against which the visitors were absolutely powerless overwhelming defeat for lafa yette can be laid in general to ' ' too much lehigh team herrington and wysocki carried off scoring honors registering four touch downs apiece dave maginnes savaria and young scoring the re mainder of a total of twelve scored during the game the bril liancy of the lehigh backfield was only too apparent but the line was not outshadowed on defense they presented a stone wall and on of fense broke open holes large enough to drive british tanks through and formed an interference which knocked out lafayette men just as they came the only department i of the game in which lehigh did j not show up well was in registering i goals from touchdowns macdonald most suc cessful smokers lehigh has held in several years the attendance was the largest ever known at one of these affairs and their was a notice able amount of pep observed in the crowd present after the | smoker almost the entire student i body took part in a lively parade over the usual route through the bethlehems f w hukill president of the i senior class presided at the smoker i which was opened by a short earn est talk from george w hoban 15 captain of the 1914 football team he urged that the student body keep up college spirit all the year around and support all the i teams the lafayette game is a big occasion but we must remember that there are other teams besides the football team that needs sup port this is not the only game make your support a real thing all the time and net something worked up on occasions speaking of the coming game mr hoban said from all indications we have an edge on lafayette tomorrow we all hope that we are going to win but we do not want to be survey of the situation showed that there was an abundant amount of wholesome food for all we must however reduce our con sumption of certain foods if we eliminate waste and change our food program it willbe accom plished it is imperative that the people be informed of this the educational forces are being used to do it the various state county city and township forces are help ing and the buisness organizations of the country have been appealed to estimates for this year indicate that we will have a surplus of but 248,000,000 bushels which can be sent to our allies they need 550 000,000 bushels and even if the con servative program proposed by the food administrator be followed the allies will be furnished with 150.000,000 bushels less than they need this shortage must be made up by substituted cereals the vast shortage of these funda mentals shows the serious nature of the problem the solution of which may be brought about by the three methods mentioned food is as essential to our allies as men or money the argentine wheat crop for the year is nearly 100,000,000 bushels short only 77,000,000 bu shels being produced as compared to the average crop of 177,000,000 bushels this shortage is so great that an embargo has been placed on the export of wheat a shortage of shipping makes australian and in dian wheat unavailable russian wheat cannot be obtained because of the blockade by the central powers and the wheat of bulgaria and roumania goes to these powers last year our country's wheat crop was 150,000,000 bushels short of the average and canada produced but fifty and that at the end of the game they stood up and sang their alma mater even though they were beaten by a score that has never been equaled since the two colleges started contesting for the football supremacy of the lehigh valley one of the features of the contest was the snake dance in which the whole student body took part and the large l that they formed in the middle of the field at the end
