cided upon the men who will repre sent the brown and white on the mat this season the final try-outs for the team will probably be held in the near future but at the present time the personnel of the team is a matter of conjecture there will be many new faces on the team in fact none of the classes will be represented by men with varsity experience but lehigh will not be greatly handicapped by this fact inasmuch as the same con dition exists on the other college wrestling teams the schedule for the wrestling season has also not been completed by manager downey so that it can not be announced in its final form at this time the first regularly scheduled meet is on february 12 when the brown and white grap ples with the navy the climax of the season will be the intercol legiates which will be held at columbia university on march 22 and marcl 23 coach sheridan is developing his team gradually with the object of birnging the men to their highest state of development for the intercollegiates will fit men for rapid promo tion in the united states signal corps metallurgists take trip to palmerton archibald johnston 89 first mayor of the city of bethlehem a short college meeting was held last wednesday noon in packer hall j m coleman 20 was elected assistant manager of foot ball receiving 189 votes j g bell 20 and j n marshal 20 the other candidates for the po sition received 120 1 and 68 votes respectively dr emery vice-president of the university made several an nouncements owing to the shortage of coal it will be neces sary to conserve the university supply as closely as possible and in consequence it has been deter mined to discontinue the chapel exercises for the remainder of the term they would in any event cease at the beginning of examina tions on the 19th they will be re sumed at the beginning of next term as it is probable that some members of the student body are calculating on making up their percentage of chapel attendance between now and the 18th all men in college will be credited with at tendance from the 9th to the 19th inclusive the college lecture scheduled for next friday morn ing has also been postponed till a later date in the spring i have been asked to call the attention of the student body to the community singing at the lorenz theatre next sunday after noon at 3.15 no admission is charged and everyone is welcome dr emery then read the follow ing telegrams which were received from the signal department in re gard to the training of engineers for radio service the letter of december 15th referred to is the circular letter from the chief of engineers which has been posted on the bulletin board in packer hall for some time relating to the matter of enlisting in the engineer corps so as to be furloughed back to college work the telegrams are as follows washington d c president lehigh university south bethlehem pa refer letter of december 15th from office chief of engineers re garding special enlistment of engi neering students you are in formed that electrical engineer ing students and others desiring service in signal corps and eligible under regulations indicated in above letter should take action in dicated adding to application statements that service in signal corps is desired transfer to sig nal corps will be effected upon call to active duty address further inquiry to chief signal office of the army squier per slaughter president lehigh university south bethlehem pa special signal corps radio course may be given without re quirements of enlisting to students suitably qualified technically and physically special committee has approved the course of instruction discussed at conference subject to continued on third page in a fast close hard fought game the brown and white five defeated muhlenberg wednesday night in taylor gymnasium the score was 26-17 lehigh drew first blood when donovan caged a foul soon after the start of the game he repeated a few seconds later muhlenberg quickly tied the score when frietag dropped one through the basket from that time on the game was close the lead being held by both teams sev eral times at the end of the half the score was 11-6 in favor of le high starting the second half the brown and white scored three points and h,eld the lead during the rest of the game _ the score is not indicative of the real strength of the teams however lehigh was continually threatening the allentonians goal but due to inaccurate shooting was not able to make the most of its opportun ities muhlenberg on the other hand had but few opportunities to score but made the most of them and rarely missed the chance to make these shots good for lehigh the work of captain mccarthy and wysocki stood out prominently these two men were all over the court and their strong defensive work kept muhlenberg s chances to score at a minimum they were the center of the brown and white passing game and gave a remarkable exhibition of clean handling of the ball hess at cen ter showed flashes of good form and was the leading scorer with four goals 1 from the floor to his credit donovan and r mccarthy also played exceptionally well at times captain frietag was undoubted ly muhlenberg s greatest asset his shooting was always accurate and as a result he accounted for half of his teams points greene and sol mon also played well lehigh auspices of the metallurgy department visited the plant of the new jersey zinc company at palmerton pa the students were conducted by repre sentatives of the company through the retort plant oxide plant and spiegel plant continued on third page the oxide plant consists of thirty-six batteries four furnaces to a battery the ore which is charged into the furnaces by larry cars consists of a mixture of frank linite and powdered anthracite coal the charge lasts for eight hours and all during this time a blast is coming up through the bot tom of the grate at the end of eight hours as much oxide as pos sible has been driven off and the remaining clinker is broken up and dumped into cars the oxide form ed is blown by the blast up into drums and thence into downcomers into the blowing room where high speed fans pick up the oxide which is in the form of fine white powder and blow it into the bag house the bags are made from canvas and are about forty feet long and about two to three feet in diameter the air filters out through the canvas as al so does the moisture at the bot tom of these bags are attached other bags which can be removed and the oxide is finally collected in these bags by hitting the long bags with ropes suspended along the sides this is then carried over to the packing house and placed into hoppers from which it is fed into barrels by automatic feeders the clinker from this process is taken over to the spiegel plant and is charged into the blast furnaces in order that spiegeleisen can be made as it contains quite a bit of man owing to the closing of the chapel the bach choir which customarily uses the chapel for re hearsals to prepare for its public entertainment will be given the use of the auditorium of drown memorial hall on the evenings of january 10 17 and 24 at 8 o clock the topic in the various discus sion groups last wednesday was ' ' judaism ' ' this topic embracing the various aspects of the religion of the old testament is the last of a series touching on world re ligions other than the christian re ligion after the discussion group meeting next week when christ ianity will be discussed the sub jects 1 will bear on the life of christ it was brought out in the meet ings last wednesday that judaism runs far back in history the most reliable sources on it are the books of the old testament and in studying the latter we find juda ism to be very closely related to christianity and to be in fact the foundation of christianity the creed of judaism is one god over all one brotherhood of all peace and goodwill among all the religion recognizes one su preme being god of the jews a father to a covenant nation and commonly called jehovah the earliest form of the jewish faith or judaism was patriarchal on the night of the israelites de parture from egypt an essential part of judaism in its more de veloped form was begun by the in stitution of the passover at sinai the ten commandments were given and subsequently there was reveal ed to moses to be by him communi cated to the people a complicated system of ceremonial observances a hereditary priesthood was con secrated and a theocratic form of government maintained the su preme civil ruler whether lawgiver judge or king being regarded os the vicegerent of god ancient judaism was the precursor of christianity and the germ from which it sprang and christians believe that all the ceremonies sacred personages etc were types and shadows of the life and suffer ings of jesus christ the aspects of modern judaism were also discussed after the jews lost their independence the judicial regulations of the mosaic law ceased to be observed tradi tion also gained increased authority and in the later half of the fourth century arose the jerusalem and in the sixth century the babylonian talmud containing the rules etc intended to supplement those of the old testament notwithstanding these and other changes modern judaism still bears very consider able resemblance to the ancient type of the faith ' ' of particular interest in the dis cussions was the study of the var ious beliefs maintained by the faith in question thus we find that in judaism sin is regarded as a breach of divine commandment and that atonement is possible only through the shedding of blood in regard to salvation the view is maintained that israel is the coven ant nation through which the whole world is to be blessed fur thermore earthly success and ma terial wealth is believed to follow through the strict adherence to the law given at sinai judaism supports the belief in a continued on third page as a result of the gathering of representatives of the various technical schools of the country plans are now under way for the installation of a special course in radio at lenigh the meeting was called by the u s signal corps officials for saturday december 29 in washington lehigh was represented by prof wm estey and dr n m emery in modern warfare the use of the wireless in communication is continually growing in importance new inventions are constantly in creasing the efficiency of the signal corps and the wireless is being rapidly developed to remarkable perfection the importance of the corps is shown by figures of the french army which has some 20,000 men engaged in this branch of the service at present the course as outlined by the signal corps provided for fifteen weeks of instruction over a wide range of related subjects the most modern developments of the science are included outside of the short incidental course in send ing and receiving practice the theory of the subject is covered by a study of such topics as the fol lowing various methods of sig naling batteries generators recti fiers dynamotors alternating cur rent circuits systems of radio transmission types of equipment vacuum tubes radio telegraphy ground telegraphy airplane radio and types of planes used etc the graduate of the course will be qualified for valuable scientific work under the signal corps and will have excellent opportunity for advancement continued on third page the requirements for entrance in this special course include stipu lations to the effect that the appli cant must be a citizen of the united states he must be a junior senior or graduate student in one of the schools on the list he must johnston 89 ; president of the chamber company largely officered by able men trained and educated 1 in our engineering schools here was the first manufacturing company to take up and institute in our coun try the manufacture of armor plate and high power guns for national defense and today its name and fame are world-wide for the sup port it is giving to the allied cause it is well that the new city of bethlehem should receive and treasure the flag of the keystone state — the state in which our na tional liberty was born and which is leading in the defense and main tenance of the principles of liberty and democracy in the world
