dance keen competition pre-med meeting dr hausman surgeon-in chief at the sacred heart hospital of allentown will tell about american surgery at the monday evening meet ing of the pre-medical so ciety the meeting will be held in coppee hall at eight o'clock to establish new honor fraternity m s & t drill to be held monday no excuses accepted by dean for absences from drill a chapter of tau sigma will be brought to lehigh — - last saturday the basketball team completed a season which in spite of a poor start turned out to be very successful the first five games were all played away from home against teams which were undoubtedly the strongest on the brown and white schedule ; consequently the team did not make a good showing before mid-years however the team gained its stride and from then on lost only one game the opening game was with princeton on dec 11 in this game princeton seemed to re tain the jinx over lehigh it has held all year winning 26-20 the team also lost a close game to fordham and a spectacular last-second game to perm 26-25 still it could not gain its stride and was defeated by both the army and navy in very close games after that the team began winning games and swim ming competitions has caused no small amount of concern here at lehigh rutgers la fayette swarthmore catholic university and lehigh will vie for honors tomorrow afternoon at easton in the new lafayette gymnasium rutgers undefeated team which includes the powerful navy swimmers among its many victims will undoubtedly secure first place second hon ors are conceded to the brown and white engineering department dr richards in 1915 when dean of the college of engin eering at the university of il linois was interested in pi tau sigma's foundation and was one of its strongest supporters when it was organized it was founded jointly at illinois and wisconsin and since has spread into the foremost engineering schools in the country profes sor j v martinis a professor at the university of minnesota and a lehigh graduate has been corresponding with mr luce of the mechanical engin eering department here for sev eral years concerning the foun dation of a chapter at lehigh as a result a petition for its founding has been approved by the faculty and a committee has been appointed to draw up a petition to send to each chap ter of the fraternity in order that lehigh might become a member before the annual con vention next fall on monday afternoon from four till six o'clock drill will be held for all students taking military science and tactics the battalion will be organized as in the past being composed of four companies the list of company assignments has been completed and is now posted on the bulletin boards in the ar mory major mccammon has been advised that the annual inspec tion by the district commander and other officers sent by the war department in washing ton will be held during the last week of april this per mits twelve hours of drill be fore that time during which the instructors will concentrate on the weaknesses of the men and also on those points which are necessary for a good showing in the inspection in his re cent survey of the department he found that the results of this year's training are far su perior to those of last year at this time he is confident that lehigh will make a good show ing in the inspection the faculty recently decided army navy and syracuse to be among opponents with the eastern intercolle giate wrestling championships to be waged in the palestra at the university of pennsylvania today and tomorrow there is much speculation as to the pro bable outcome in reality there is only one champion to defend his title although two to com pete reed won the crown in the 115-pound division last year but will be unable to de fend that title since he has graduated to the next heavier class miller of yale will de fend in the 158-pound class choice for the individual hon ors and place positions based on observation in several meets and deducted by a comparative rating in other meets would read something like this 115-pound class kaiser perm state mcgovern lehigh josephson cornell 125-pound class reed le high ; question of the hon or system up to this semester no reci tations were heard from eleven o'clock to noon on thursdays and it was customary for the classes to conduct their meet ings at that time on various oc casions throughout the term the attendance of the students was good inasmuch as they pro ceeded to the gatherings after their regular morning classes the new schedule however pro vides for the meetings to take place upon the conclusion of the college lectures the upper classmen who are not com pel led to be present at the ad dresses are reluctant to go out of their way to attend the oratory it had been consider ed of prime importance to learn from actual contact with the better laboratories of a great number of high grade universi ties just what is the finest in architecture and equipment for the a number one college laboratory the trip started off with a short visit to cornell and from there to buffalo where the committee was entertained by the lehigh club of that city detroit was the next stop marked by a visit to the plant of the packard motor car com pany and a call on allen mac callaugh lehigh 92 who is president of the company the travelers were also entertained by the lehigh club the uni versity of michigan at ann ar bor was next visited then on to chicago where they visited the university of chicago and northwestern university and were received by the chicago lehigh club at this point the electrical and architectural men went on to minneapolis while the rest of the party journeyed to madison wiscon sin they were there joined by the group from minneapolis and inspected the university of wisconsin from there the party went to the university of illinois at which place they were given a great ovation and were splendidly entertained the party considered that uni versity to be on a par with the leading educational schools of the country driving across the country the committee next sojourned at west lafayette and visited the university of purdee the next university to be viewed was cincinnati of which her man schneider lehigh 94 is the dean returning home ward the last stop was made at pittsburgh where visits were paid to arranged in its display cases an exhibition il lustrating the life and work of newton the library owns a copy of the first scientific paper written by him this article was published by the royal so ciety in 1672 and contains new ton's discovery of the reflect ing telescope among other books on display are first and second continental editions of newton's principia the first collected edition of his works in five volumes the first amer ican edition of the principia .." and the first edition of his chronology these together with pictures of newton and his college make an interesting exposition on wednesday night alpha kappa psi held a smoker to which it invited as guests all those sophomores and juniors whose scholastic standing makes them eligible for membership in the society the aim of the meeting was to enable the guests to become acquainted with the members of the chap ter and with the purposes and accomplishments of alpha kap pa psi j j frey president presid ed and introduced dr caroth ers who told about the develop ment of business administra tion in american colleges he said the first course in econo mics was given 70 years ago and since that time these cour ses have grown very quickly at present there are four types of colleges giving courses in business administration the first of these is the most conservative including such colleges as princeton amherst and wesleyan where business is not given a separate college but subjects in business are given as electives along with the arts subjects the second type is illustrated by columbia where two years of a liberal arts course are required before the student may take business lehigh is a good example of the third type which gives a four year course along with certain subjects in other de partments of the fourth type on muhlenberg field whether the invitation will be accepted depends on the ac tion to be taken by the district association however it is be lieved that since the title events were held at allentown presidency of lafayette college and will as sume his duties there at the be ginning of the next college year in september dr lewis was elected to the presidency at the meeting of the trustees last december but no announcement of the action was made at that time it is generally understood that when overtures were first made to him he was not inclined to con sider them favorably because of his comparatively short ad ministration at the capital uni versity dr lewis succeeds dr john henry maccracken whose res ignation took effect on october 1 1926 dean donald bishop prentice has been acting presi : dent of the college during the last several months dr william m lewis was born at howell mich on march 24 1878 a son of james and mary lewis he was grad uated from lake forest college 111 in 1900 with the degree of a 8 and received his master's degree two years later he studied abroad from 1913 to 1914 continued on page four from 1900 to 1903 he was an instructor in illinois college and taught in lake forest col lege from 1903 to 1906 he was then elected headmaster at lake forest academy and held that position until 1913 from 1917 to 1919 he was executive secre tary of the national commis a soccer schedule comparable to that of any other college in the country is arranged for the brown and white dribblers for next season and will be featur ed by a visit of the navy boot ers to
