state basketball game in taylor gymnasium the commit tee has secured the orchestra from the u s ambulance service camp at allentown and the music prom ises to be peppy it is hoped since the examinations are over that a large attendance will be present to enjoy the evening the subscription will be the regular price of one dollar the senior class book commit tee wishes to call the attention of every man who intends having his insert of this year's book to the fact that the eleven dollar assess ment must be paid before satur day february 2 midnight this step is imperative as all material must be in the hands of printers and engravers at that time and an advance payment must be made it will therefore be impossible to include the write-up of any man who has not paid up by that time the money may be paid to any member of the committee which consists of penman hukill lawall and buchanan chairman discussions start on new testament oratorical contest to be held as usual with the life of christ second half of course to deal washington's birthday program prizes donated by alumni the philadelphia lehigh club celebrated its silver jubilee at kugler's restaurant last friday evening the banquet was held in the gold room which was decor ated with american and lehigh flags continued on third page the committee in charge de cided to make it a war dinner and this idea was carried out in the list of speakers who addressed the meeting lieutenant hector mac quarrie of the english army spoke on england's part in the war lieutenant henri mar quisan of the french aviation corps presented the french side of the war lieutenat marquisan who has been in this country for the last five months helping to train our aviators said that in a short time your aviation will be more powerful than our french service with the quality of men i have seen in your schools there is nothing that can not be accom plished roger d halliwell 19 gave an interesting talk on the ambulance work that is now being done on the french front charles e beury who had just returned from russia was interesting and enlightening in his talk on present conditions in russia dr george l stewart famous for his red cross work in servia spoke of the conditions existing in the balkans e j cattell city statistician was also one of the speakers dr drinker spoke briefly of the affairs and the work of the university outlining what is being done by the various departments to aid our government in its work walter okeson alumni secretary spoke of the alumni who are in the ser the college administration has virtually approved the holding of a junior prom this year as usual and it is nearly certain that the prom and the other festivities which go along with it will be held at a meeting of the junior class to be held today a vote will be taken on this question of holding the prom and it is expected that the class will be unanimously in favor although at this late date the question has not been definitely settled plans have been made so that in the event that the prom is held it will be as much of a success as before and the visitors will be well entertained on account of the early closing of college it was found impossible to allow the usual junior week holidays and so work for the three lower classes will go on as usual the seniors will have finished their final examinations by this time the program which has been tenta tively arranged is as follows thursday april 11 — entertain ment begins sophomore cotillion club dance in the evening friday april 12 — junior prom saturday april 13 — commence ment exercises in the morning fol lowed by alumni luncheon at the commons intercollegiate game in the afternoon mustard and creese dramatic show in the evening sunday april 14 — entertain ment ends there is also a probability that there will be intercollegiate games on the afternoon of thursday or friday it is not quite certain that the dramatic club will give a pre sentation but it is expected that some sort of entertainment will be arranged for saturday night radio course under army regulations given this term course shortened from fifteen weeks to twelve weeks to per mit early graduation of seniors will cover ah needed work the annual junior oratorical contest will be held this year as usual on washington's birthday which falls on friday february 22 the day will not be observed by the omission of classes owing to the faculty ruling to eliminate all second term holidays but this will not interfere with the holding of the contest as it is to be held dur ing the regular lecture hour at eleven o'clock the musical selec tions which generally form part of the program will necessarily be omitted due to the short time which is available for the contest the arrangements for the con etst are in the hands of prof w c thayer of the english depart ment who has so successfully handled the contests during the past twenty years it is one of the oldest institutions at lehigh as it was established in 1882 and has been held annually since that date with the exception of two years alumni prizes of 25 for the win ner 15 for the second place and 10 for the third place are swarded the required number of contestants have entered the com petition but at the present time the names and subjects of the six men who are to speak are not avail able for publication further de tails as to the contestants their subjects the judges etc will ap pear in an early issue when the arrangements have been completed mechanicals to meet next thursday the topic in the various discus sion groups last wednesday night was the life of christ this topic included many viewpoints and sidelights on the life of christ but the general trend of the dis cussion was concerned with christ s life and his significance in the mind of the man of the present day this was the first meeting touching upon the new testament the question as to whether christ was a supernatural being was also raised before his death he lived among the people talked with them and remained as one of them yet h evidently had a di vine purpose he was possessed with certain divine powers that made him stand out as a mes senger from god christ arose from the dead this however was different from the transformation that took place when lazarus was raised from the dead when lazarus came back to life he was in his former position merely a man to live and die again it is believed by many that christ existed in human form after rising from the dead yet he had supernatural and divine powers during the forty days that christ remained on the earth he per formed no miracles and did not appear among the people before ascending to heaven christ appeared to his disciples and charged them to go out and spread his teachings unto all nations it was here shown that christ existed in the human form at that time for thomas said that he would not believe until he put his hand into the holes made by the nails in christ's hand it was then that thomas believed finally christ's teachings have been of utmost value to the world and have produced improved con ditions everywhere glasgow university man to speak at y.m.c.a a meeting of the mechanical en gineering society is to be held on thursday february 6 at wil liams hall a very attractive pro gram has been arranged and the 135-pound class at the end of the first nine-minute period the referee was unable to give a decision although it seemed to the spectators that wuerz had the advantage he was however very near to being thrown several times and it was only by a fine dis play of nerve and ability that he succeeded in breaking away in the two extra periods wuerz was the aggressor from start to finish and succeeded in winning the de cision in the 115-pound class rey nolds of lehigh succeeded in throwing brinker of the y m c a in 8 minutes and 45 seconds this bout was very evenly fought and the result was in doubt until the last second when rey nolds in breaking away from a wrist hold succeeded in getting an arm lock with which he easily threw his opponent in the 125-pound class bevier of lehigh won from gernert by decision the former was the ag gressor throughout in the second 135-pound bout durner of allentown ■won from zirkin on aggressiveness the 145-pound bout was won by a gernert of allentown who threw walker of lehigh in 8 minutes and 30 seconds with a bar and chancery hold latimer of lehigh defeated mack in nine minutes in the 158 pound class the former was the aggressor and had a five-minute advantage at the end of the bout the 175-pound bout between manley of lehigh and leonard of y m c a was rather slow and resulted in a draw after two three minute overtime periods results : astical production he was pre vious to his departure for the united states arts tutor of the baptist theological seminary and also prepared students for en trance to rugby oxford and cambridge universities dr ur quhart is well posted on the uni versity problem of europe having sailed for america just before the outbreak of the war a special musical program has been arranged rev mr s n kent chaplain of the university announces office hours at 8 o'clock every morning and wednesday from 1.30 to 2.30 p.m in drown hall these office hours will continue while the chapel remains closed the radio course as prescribed by the u s government has re cently been installed at lehigh and is being carried out by the electrical department under the auspices of professor esty the course as originally laid out was supposed to cover a period of fif teen weeks but due to the fact that the seniors will graduate earlier than usual the same amount of work will be accomplished in twelve weeks two text-books are being used radio communica tion by john miller and wire less telegraphy by r stanley wireless telegraphy by zen neck and principles of wireless telegraphy by fleming will be used as reference books in connec tion with the course the purpose of this course which has been installed in the various approved colleges in the country is to bring the radio per sonnel of the u s army up to war standard both the french and english armies have a large number of officers and men en gaged in this type of work the work will be classified under three heads research design and in stallation and the men will be trained in all three of these branches after the men have completed the course at the uni versity they will be sent to a sort of finishing school where they will undergo further instruction under the u s army officers the men who attain a proper standard of efficiency will be given warrants as non-commissioned officers in the signal corps if the student shows exceptional promise he will be recommended for a commission after the men have been in the ser vice for a stated time they will be permitted to take the examinations for commissions the course in detail is as
